Google updates its search algorithm thousands of times a year.

Some of Google’s algorithms are quite well known – some have almost taken on legendary status (e.g., Florida, Panda, Penguin, RankBrain) and have had a major impact on the history of SEO and the rankings (and revenue) of websites.

But most changes are much smaller. Some updates even go completely unnoticed.

In just the past two years, we’ve seen roughly a dozen significant updates – many of which were “quality updates,” as well as:

Some of these recent updates have been confirmed or announced by Google.

However, other periods of volatility in the SERPs (believed to be due to an algorithm update) have been observed and reported by algorithm watchers and tracking tools, but Google has never officially confirmed an update.

Why You Should Track Google Updates

You’re in the profession of optimizing websites and content for search engines.

So it makes sense to keep track of big and important changes that could impact your SEO strategy and tactics.

An algorithm change or update can either help or hurt your:

Search ranking and visibility.

Organic search traffic.

Conversions.

Return on investment (ROI).

Revenue.

Most people tend to think of an algorithm as a way Google punishes websites.

But really, algorithms are a way to reward websites for providing a good user experience and relevant content.

Search is a zero-sum game. For every winner, there must be a loser.

Google wants to provide the best possible answer for the user’s search query.

All that said, it would be kind of insane (and impossible) to try to keep track of every little Google search update.

Think about it like this:

If Google is updating it’s search algorithm thousands of times per year, that means Google is changing its algorithm around three times per day, on average.

To paraphrase Roger Montti: If you pick any day of the week and declare a Google update happened, you’d probably be correct!

So track those big updates. Just don’t obsess over them or you’ll make yourself crazy.

8 Tools to Track Google Algorithm Updates

Google isn’t particularly fond of any third-party tools that monitor changes to Google’s algorithms.

Officially, some Google spokespeople have warned SEO professionals that such tools are inaccurate most of the time.

This is true – some of these tools pick up on “changes” to Google’s search results that aren’t really algorithm updates at all.

Fluctuation? Sure. But volatility in the SERP results isn’t always due to a Google algorithm change.

All that said, these tools can provide an early warning that an update might be brewing and you should check your analytics.

Here are a few tools you can use to track Google algorithm updates.

MozCast, in the style of a weather report, provides a “temperature” that represents how turbulent Google’s algorithm has been every 24 hours over the past 30 days. Hotter and stormier means Google’s rankings are very much in flux.

SEMrush Sensor is one of the more impressive algorithm tracking tools. You can see ranking changes (desktop and mobile) broken down into more than 20 categories, as well as by device, SERP feature, and location. Plus you can check out overall SERP volatility (and domain winners and losers) for the last 30 days.

This free SEO tool will help you figure out whether a Google algorithm update has impacted your organic sessions. Panguin uses various filters to overlay known algorithm updates on top of your Google Analytics data to make analysis a breeze.

This tool monitors more than 100,000 keywords daily to track ranking fluctuations in desktop, mobile, and local search results. You can sign up to be notified when Google is particularly volatile.

What to Do After an Algorithm Update

There are five things you should always remember after an algorithm update (whether confirmed or unconfirmed):

Don’t panic.

Make sure you were actually impacted by the algorithm change and not something else (e.g., a website change, technical SEO issue, or manual action).

Don’t rush to react – be patient and collect data.

Read credible sources (like Search Engine Journal) to gain insights and see what the SEO experts are saying.

Make adjustments to your SEO strategy and tactics as necessary.

It’s also important to remember that Google’s algorithms are constantly changing.

What impacts your rankings today could change in a few days, a week, or in a month.

Why Does My Siri Sound Weird?

Since the update to iOS 15, many users have noticed a change in Siri’s voice and pitch. They believe the digital assistant has become very robotic, which is offputting at best. How to restore Siri’s natural voice

Below, we will list the top six things you could try to restore Siri’s natural voice.

Solution #01: Restart your device

Let’s start with the most basic and effective solution of them of all: restarting. Whenever your iPhone is acting up, this should be your go-to move before going ahead with other solutions. First, press and hold the volume down button alongside the Side key to get the power off menu. You will see the power off slider at the top of your screen. move the slider all the way to the right to power off your iPhone.

Now, press and hold the Side key to turn it back on again. Once it has booted up, press and hold the Side key to bring Siri up and ask it to do something for you, see if she sounds natural. 

Solution #02: Turn off Low Power Mode

iPhones are generally quite conservative when it comes to battery use. Depending on the power you have, it might turn off some features and tinker with others. And Siri’s voice appears to be one of the casualties. So, if you are low on battery and are using the Low Power Mode, we would like you to turn it off for a while and try to use Siri once again. If the voice appears to be natural, it is the Low Power Mode that is at fault here. 

To turn off Low Power Mode, first, go to Settings then tap on ‘Battery.’

Then, hit the ‘Low Power Mode’ toggle to turn it off. 

Solution #03: Redownload Siri’s voice settings

For those unaware, Siri does not exactly come with a single voice option. At the time of writing, it comes with at least six accents and two voice options for each. You might see more or fewer options depending on your region. 

With so many voice options available, Siri does not always manage to get the right one, which often ends up turning his voice into this robotic, unnatural accent. Thankfully, all you have to do is redownload your preferred option and you should be able to get Siri’s natural voice back. To change Siri’s Accent as well as Voice on iOS 15, first, go to Settings and tap on ‘Siri & Search.’

Now, tap on ‘Siri Voice.’

At the top of the screen, you will find ‘Variety.’ Under the banner, select the Accent that feels natural to you.

If it is already set to your preferred voice option, select any other option and go back to your original choice. This would practically force Siri to rewrite your preferences. 

When done with your tinkering, exit the area and call Siri into action by pressing and holding the Side key. Hopefully, your issue will be resolved. 

Solution #04: Make sure you have enough storage 

As we have mentioned before, Siri has multiple voice options and Accents, which allows for a deeper level of customization. However, before going ahead and applying the effects, make sure you have enough storage. These audio files can range between 150MB and 500MB, meaning you should have at least a couple of GBs to spare for them to work. When you are low on storage, your iPhone could end up deleting your stuff, including your Siri audio files. When that happens, make sure to redownload your favorite Siri Variety and Voice to remove the robotic attire. 

Solution #05: Reset your device

Resetting your device is probably the last thing you would want to do, but that might come in handy when you are looking to get Siri’s voice back on track. First, go to Settings and tap on ‘General.’

Now, go to ‘Transfer or Reset iPhone.’

Since we want to delete all data and re-configure the device as it was new, you should tap on the ‘Erase All Content and Settings’ option.

Your iPhone will tell you what exactly would be removed from your device. If you are cool with losing all your data and settings, tap on Continue.

Finally, enter your iPhone passcode and the reset will begin. 

You will get the option to download and install them when an update is available.

Greetings! I am Phil Svitek and my aim is to help creatives, like you, master mental fortitude because it takes way more than just talent and luck to succeed in the entertainment industry.

With this lesson, we’ll examine why milestones are the perfect motivators for change, growth or accomplishment.

Alright, let’s dig in. First off, what is a milestone? In this instance I’m using milestone to mean an event of significance. Milestones can refer to important birthdays like your sweet sixteen, or turning 21, maybe your 30th. Aw, who am I kidding, any birthday is a milestone in a person’s life. Heck, my friend Roxy Striar celebrates her half birthday. I’m not kidding.

PS: I’m not judging her. I actually think that’s amazing that she takes the time to celebrate her life’s progress every six months.

But milestones can also be events such as New Year’s, your graduation, a reunion, a sporting event you’re part-taking in, a wedding, an anniversary, a big festival like Coachella. It could be the 4th of July, Father’s Day or Mother’s Day. Perhaps even the deadline for your creative work, such as the date that your publisher needs your rough draft.

Pretty much anything can be a milestone, so long as it holds importance for you. A few months ago, a milestone for me was an Emerson College Men’s Soccer alumni event. It’d been a number of years since I last saw my teammates, certainly all in one place, and so it was a major moment in my life. We were not only meeting up but we were going to get to play against the current roster. Knowing that motivated me to really get in shape, practice my footwork and passing as well as reflect on my successes since my college days while thinking of ways I could inspire the upcoming graduates to achieve the same. That’s when it hit me how a milestone can act as a great catalyst for action. Thinking about that weekend got me in gear.

I encourage you to do the same. When you have something to look forward to it excites you to keep moving forward and make progress. Those milestones set us off an a so-called journey. Sometimes small and other times large.

The reason any upcoming milestones motivate us is because we feel a sense of responsibility, whether to ourselves or others. That’s a good thing. Being accountable is a great way to get things done and something I’ve talked about before in my lesson about scientifically beating procrastination. And because I’ve talked about it before, I won’t get into those notions right now. But you’re free to check out that lesson for yourself. The link is down below.

The point being that when you commit to something, you feel the weight of that obligation. But that only works if you are able to identify upcoming milestones in your life and furthermore, choose goals based on those milestones. What do you want to accomplish before that milestone? If you’re running the Boston Marathon, you should probably be in shape beforehand. How do you do that? Well, start by running at least once every two days. Initially it might be only for 20 minutes but then build.

Another example, this one more geared towards creatives, is a film festival deadline. If you’re a filmmaker, knowing when you need to finish your film so you can submit it for competition in a festival such as Sundance or Cannes is a fantastic motivator.

That’s the key. You can’t forget that milestones are the perfect motivators only when you see them as such AND put in the work. Both parts are important and they don’t work without each other.

Lastly, anytime a milestone you’ve been working towards passes, choose another. Continue the cycle indefinitely. Let each milestone that passes build the momentum you’re seeking in your life.

Why Kinect Is Microsoft’s ‘Iphone’

Microsoft has shipped eight million Kinect for Xbox 360 devices in two months, according to CEO Steve Ballmer speaking in his keynote address yesterday at CES 2011.

That’s the number shipped to retailers, not customers. Still, Microsoft exceeded by some unknown number the 5 million units they expected to sell to actual users. The early sales success of Kinect only hints at the monster hit they have on their hands as the capabilities and potential of the Kinect platform become clear.

Kinect is quickly turning into Microsoft’s “iPhone” — the small product that could grow into a monster, change the world and transform the fortunes and direction of the company that makes it.

The AppleiPhone was theoretically a mobile telephone. Instead, it turned out to be so much more: An interface revolution, a new application paradigm and platform and Apple’s probably successful attempt to invent the future. The iPhone interface drove sales of the iPad, and will probably show up on future desktop computers.

Kinect is supposed to be just an input device to a gaming system. Instead, Kinect just might become another interface revolution, a new application platform and Microsoft’s probably successful attempt to invent the future. The Kinect interface will probably become part of the PC interface of the future.

Kinect appears superficially to be nothing more than a Wii-like motion capture system. But it’s way more than that.

It’s a system that combines motion and gestures with voice recognition, face recognition and “environment,” or a computer-generated space — games, video, virtual worlds. It does all this in a very inexpensive, very accurate way that brings a long list of science-fiction like applications to the masses.

More important, it uses real cameras to capture motion, rather than laser, infra-red or other systems that don’t enable photo and video applications.

Out of the box, Kinect realizes a “technology of the future” from our childhoods: The George Jetson video phone. Microsoft’s Video Kinect app enables people to have video calls with family and friends. Of course, other video chat systems have existed for years. But Kinect is the first giant-screen system that’s deployed already in millions of homes. While nobody was paying attention, giant-screen, Jetson-like video calls have gone mainstream.

Kinect also has the potential to usher in other “technologies of the future,” including the gesture interface from “Minority Report,” deeply immersive virtual reality a la “The Matrix,” or “Star Trek,” and other technologies that we’re familiar with from science fiction.

The Future of Kinect

Ballmer introduced at CES something called Avatar Kinect, a virtual chat environment where your body movements, voice, hand gestures and even facial expressions are captured and applied to a cartoon version of you. Let’s say three friends want to chat. They each launched the Avatar Kinect application, which shows all their avatars in a virtual environment on their TVs. Then, they just have a conversation. As they do so, their avatars interact with all movements and expressions on the TV.
