Now, as you might had already found out, Windows XP will no longer receive official support starting from this year (learn how to keep using Windows XP anyway) so a new update for the Windows 8 platform has been already rumored and also expected by all of us. Of course when talking about an OS update we are talking about new features, stability improvements and other capabilities designed to make the firmware more stable and also better. In that matter, during the following review I will detail the features which have been added to the Windows 8.1 system.

So, with that being said, let’s actually see what’s new in Windows 8.1 release.

Improved accessibility

Shutting down your computer will be easier with the new update of Windows 8.1. Furthermore, accessing and searching for your favorite apps and programs can now be made from the main Windows 8 panel. The new user interface is placing near upper-right corner – just near your account picture, the Power and Search keys. Moreover, using your apps is easier and faster since you can pin your tools (both desktop and Windows store programs) right on your taskbar, which can be accessed with ease by placing the mouse to the bottom edge of your screen.

Great features for the mouse and keyboard Windows 8 experience

On the new Windows 8.1 update Microsoft added new features for those who are using their devices along with a mouse and keyboard. These improvements are including classic “close” and “minimize” buttons near each app you cross with your mouse. Of course, now by using the mouse you can access the taskbar and your apps which are being already saved there. Furthermore, with your mouse you can decide what to do with the start screen apps – un-pin, uninstall, add to taskbar, resize and so on. There are many other features added in order to improve the mouse and keyboard user experience, so don’t hesitate and test the same in order to make a proper idea about it.

Find and install new Windows 8 apps using the Windows Store default icon

Expert tip:

Internet Explorer is now more “intelligent”

With new Windows 8.1, Internet Explorer has been also updated. With IE 11 you will be able to use an intuitive user interface that adapts depending on the device you are using – for example, on a Windows 8 powered tablet, Internet Explorer will be modified in order to provide better touch-based features, while on laptops the platform will offer great support for mouse and keyboard.

New features for the business field

Even though most of the features added on Windows 8.1 are dedicated to regular users, there are some important improvements that aims the business field. In that matter we must mention Enterprise Mode Internet Explorer (EMIE) and extended Mobile Device Management (MDM). With EMIE you can run apps which are compatible with Internet Explorer 8 on latest version of the web browsing platform – thus you will be able to run and use older apps on your Windows 8.1 device. MDM is basically introducing new policy settings that can be used by enterprise companies in order to develop and manage their own market strategies.

Windows 8.1 on affordable devices

Yes, that’s true; from now on you will be able to buy affordable Windows 8.1 powered devices, since the new platform can smoothly run on laptops, desktops or tablets with lower performances. So, now starting from now Microsoft will try to address its firmware for more customers and will try to keep this customers up to date – another reason for you to forget about Windows XP and another market strategy implemented by Microsoft in that matter if you ask me.

What’s New In Windows 10 For Phones Build 10051

It’s been a while since the last release, but today Microsoft is finally pushing a new preview of Windows 10 for phones. Although, the company is rolling out a new build via the Fast ring, which means more bugs and fewer workarounds, build 10051 includes a number of new features and improvements.

If you’re a Windows Insider and you want to download the new build for phones, don’t forget to grab the Windows Insider app first, choose the “Insider Fast” option, then go to Settings apps / Update & recovery / Phone update, and tap “check for updates”.

Project Spartan: An early version of the new Microsoft’s web browser is now available for phones. It uses the new rendering engine to give greater interoperability with the modern mobile web, and includes early versions of Reading View and Reading List. For now, Project Spartan is not the default browser, and exists side-by-side with IE11. You can find it in the All Apps list and pin it to your Start Screen from there.

New mail and calendar apps: Outlook Mail and Outlook Calendar are the new built-in mail and calendar universal apps for Windows 10. These new apps come with a fresh UI, with a toggle to freely move between your email and calendar without returning to the Start screen.

Windows 10: Hands-on with the new Mail and Calendar apps

New People app: The new People app has a new visual design, but will continue to be the same useful and easy to use app that lists of all your contacts across the services, such as Exchange, chúng tôi Gmail, Facebook, etc.

New Maps app: This is the first preview of the Maps app on phones. Features include the best maps, aerial imagery, rich local search data, and voice guided navigation experiences from both Bing Maps and HERE maps, integrated together for the first time into a single app for Windows.

Microsoft has included support for landscape when invoked from an app being viewed in landscape. For large phones like the Lumia 1520, the company also added a new grid layout so you can be more efficient at switching between apps.

There is a lot going on in this newly released build of Windows 10 for phones, Microsoft has also fixed a number of big bugs found in build 9941, and the company also warns a number of known issues that Windows Insiders should know before installing and voiding the phone’s warranty.

How To Find Everything In Windows 8.1

It’s inevitable that upgrading to a new version of an operating system or application comes with a bit of a learning curve. With Windows 8.1, though—and its predecessor Windows 8—the curve is steep, and just finding simple tools and features can be a challenge.

Windows 8 isn’t just a new version of Windows, it’s a completely different OS in many ways, with its own unique features and conventions that may confound even the most ardent Windows users. Under the hood, most of the familiar Windows tools are still there, but they’re buried in strange places where they can’t be easily located, especially not when Microsoft took away the coveted Start button.

When Microsoft launched Windows 8.1, it solved much of the dilemma by bringing back the concept of the Start button. It is not identical in either form or function its predecessor, but it does provide simple access to a wide variety of common tools and functions.

I suggest you forget about the Start button, though. The simplest way to find anything in Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 is the Search charm.

Let’s say you want to find an app that you don’t have pinned as a tile on the Windows 8 Start screen. You can tap the arrow at the bottom left of the display to pull up the complete list of Apps. They’re sorted alphabetically by name by default, but you can also tap the arrow next to the word Apps at the upper left to reveal a dropdown list with options to sort the apps by category, most used, or date installed.

Who has that kind of time? Just open the Charms bar, tap the Search icon at the top of the charms, and start typing the name of whatever it is you’re looking for. As you type, Windows 8.1 refines and presents the results. In my experience, most apps or tools can be found within the first three or four letters.

The new Smart Search in Windows 8.1 provides a comprehensive, universal search.

With Windows 8.1, Microsoft evolved Search into Smart Search. When you type a query in the Search charm and hit Enter, Windows 8.1 delivers comprehensive search results that include apps, files, information from SkyDrive, Bing Web search results, and even photos, music, and video related to the search term.

Regardless of how you choose to sort the apps, you still have to sift through them to find the one you’re looking for. Depending on how many apps you have installed on your Windows 8.1 PC, that may be simple, or it could be a daunting and tedious task.

This concept isn’t unique to Windows 8.1. The Spotlight search function in Mac OS X and the search function in iOS provide a similar universal search function. There are also third-party tools like X1 Search, which can almost instantly search all of your files and content no matter where you have it stored.

Embrace the Search charm in Windows 8.1. It is your best friend, and the most convenient and efficient way to find anything you need.

Redsn0W Update Released, New Features In Tow

On Saturday, we reported that there was a major RedSn0w update on the way. Dev Team frontman MuscleNerd told the Twitter nation that a new version of the popular jailbreak tool would be hitting the web in the very near future.

As promised, the team once again made Sunday ‘Funday’ by releasing the software late last night. While the update doesn’t add support for new firmware, it does come with a host of new features. Hit the jump to see the change log…

• uses DFU mode to try to automatically determine which device and FW you have

• fetches pieces of public IPSWs from Apple (once). Non-public IPSWs must be provided manually (once).  It then caches those pieces for future use.

• “Just boot” is a tethered boot.  Uses whatever “Preferences” you’ve set for boot logo and kernel boot-args

• “Pwned DFU” puts your device in a pwned DFU state for some of the iTunes stuff detailed below

• “Recovery fix” gets past 1015 types of errors (when baseband portion of restore fails).  Should work on iOS5 beta too

• “Select IPSW” is for picking non-public IPSWs, or overriding auto-detection

•“SHSH blobs” has a bunch of options…

• “Fetch” – fetch current PARTIAL blobs on device.  Should complete in under 10 or 15 seconds.  Puts the set of PARTIAL of blobs on your computer as a plist.  Checks if Cydia already has a full set for this device and build.  If not, it submits this PARTIAL set and returns Cydia’s acknowledgement or rejection

• ”Verify”  – cryptographically verifies existing blob files from either redsn0w, TinyUmbrella, or Cydia server.  You can select a whole bunch of blobs to verify at once if you want (like the TinyUmbrella directory)

• “Submit”  – both verifies and submits one or more blob files to Cydia.  This lets you copy your entire TinyUmbrella cache of blobs up to the Cydia server

• ”Query” – queries the Cydia server for all available FULL or PARTIAL blobs for a given set of ECIDs

• “Stitch” – stitches either FULL or PARTIAL blobs to a STOCK or CUSTOM IPSW

1. FULL blobs stitched to a STOCK IPSW gives you a completely self-contained signed IPSW that iTunes will accept without any tricks (no need to go into pwned DFU mode, no need to start TinyUmbrella TSS server, no need to redirect to Cydia server for blobs).

2. PARTIAL blobs stitched to any IPSW requires you to go into pwned DFU mode before running iTunes.  No need to start TU or use Cydia though.

3. stitching either FULL or PARTIAL blobs to a CUSTOM IPSW also requires a pwned DFU start before iTunes restores.  No need to start TU or use Cydia though.

4. stitching is NOT yet supported on iPhones (well, at least not tested).  Need to work out the baseband part of the restore process.

5. will eventually support fetching the blobs directly from Cydia instead of a file on your computer.

Confused? Head on over to our RedSn0w page for a step-by-step guide on how to jailbreak your iDevice using this software (hint: it’s easy).

Have you tried out the new RedSn0w? How did it work for you?

Windows Users Asked To Update As Microsoft Spots New Zero

What is a zero-day attack?

A zero – day attack is a type of cyber attack that exploits a lacuna in the software app or system that nobody knows before. This vulnerability is called a zero – day because it is not known to the software vendor and there is no patch available to fix it. Zero – day attacks are mainly dangerous because they can be used to launch targeted attacks against specific brands or people.

Details of the Windows zero-day attack

The Windows zero – day attack exploits a vulnerability in the Windows Common Log File System (CLFS). This is used to manage log files on Windows systems. The vulnerability allow attackers to gain full access to a system that does not have a patch. It can then be used to launch a ransomware attack or other types of cyber attacks. According to Kaspersky, a Russian cyber security company, the zero – day attack was used to deploy Nokoyawa ransomware. This ransomware targets Windows servers that belong to small and medium – size brands in the Middle East, North America, and Asia.

According to Forbes, one of the zero – days is a remote code execution type. An official report from Microsoft claims that this vulnerability has links to RomCom, a Russian cybercrime outfit. Also, Microsoft claims that this group is likely working with interest from Russian intelligence. Rapid7 vulnerability risk expert, Adam Barnett warns that RomCom attacks usually target a wide spread of victims. However, Microsoft has a new patch and the full list of vulnerabilities which the patch handles is in its Security Update Guide.

Microsoft claims that it is probing “reports of a series of remote code execution vulnerabilities impacting Windows and Office products. Microsoft is aware of targeted attacks that attempt to exploit these vulnerabilities by using specially-crafted Microsoft Office documents.” Let us take a look at some of the important zero – days that the company had to deal with.

CVE-2023-36884

At the moment, there is no patch for CVE-2023-36884 and Microsoft has officially confirmed this. However, the company says that it is probing the issue. The company adds that it will “take the appropriate action to help protect our customers” after it is done with the probe.

CVE-2023-32046

CVE-2023-32046 is a zero-day attack that that affects MSHTML core Windows. Immersive Labs director of cyber threat research, Kev Breen said “This is not limited to browsers – other apps like Office, Outlook, and Skype also make use of this component.” Breen adds

CVE-2023-36874

This zero – day vulnerability mainly attacks Windows Error Reporting (WER) service. If the attacker suceeds, he will have admin access as well as privledge to the system. Automox product security staff, Tom Bowyer said “The WER service is a feature in Microsoft Windows operating systems that collects and sends error reports to Microsoft when certain software crashes or encounters other types of errors,”

Bowyer adds

“This zero – day issue is being actively exploited … so if WER is used by your organization we recommend patching within 24 hours.”

CVE-2023-32049

CVE-2023-32049 is another issue that is been exploited and it attacks the Windows Smart Screen feature. It has the capacity to bypass the Windows Smart Screen feature and make changes. VP of security products at Ivanti, Chris Goettl said

“The CVE is rated as important, but Microsoft has confirmed reports of exploitation for this issue increasing the urgency to critical,”

How to protect your system from zero – day attack Final Words

Zero – day attacks are a serious threat to brands and people alike and Windows users must be careful. Security Week claims that this year, there have been at least 19 zero – day attacks in the wild. Microsoft has patched several zero – day issues in recent months. So, it is good for users to update their system from time to time so as to guard them from exposure.
