Microsoft tried lot of new features in Windows 11 and with their new Chromium based Edge browser. Edge bar is one such an attempt to combine the widgets feature in Windows 11 with Edge settings. Using Edge bar you can use the default widgets or add site tabs and keep you updated while working on other tasks. In this article, we will explain how to access Edge bar and customize the settings.

Edge Bar with Microsoft Edge

Edge bar is the feature comes with the latest Microsoft Edge browser in Windows. Though Edge browser has a Mac version, Edge bar is a dedicated feature that is only available in Windows. As the name indicates it opens a fixed sidebar with default list of widgets. You can customize these widgets and rearrange them as per your convenience.

Opening Edge Bar

There are multiple ways to open Edge bar with Microsoft Edge browser.

1. Open from Settings Menu

This is the easiest way to launch Edge bar from the browser’s default menu.

2. Open from Edge Settings Page

This is similar to above method to open Edge bar from browser’s settings page.

3. Open Edge Bar with Shortcut URL

Unfortunately, there are no direct keyboard shortcuts available in Edge to open Edge bar. What you can do is to open the Edge shortcut URL edge://settings/edgeBar in address bar to go to the Edge bar settings page. There on you can launch the bar as explained in the above method.

Features of Edge Bar

Edge bar opens with default set of widgets from the right section of the screen. Unlike Windows widgets which open on top of other apps, Edge bar will occupy the space and adjust other windows to the left. However, you can customize this behavior and add new tabs to the bar’s sidebar.

Drag the bar to change the position on your screen.

Access weather, top stories and feeds which is a first tab by default.

Access other default tabs to open Bing search, Outlook and LinkedIn.

Add or delete new tabs below the default tabs.

Change the layout, pin or unpin and autohide the bar.

Minimize the bar to system tray icon and open back when needed.

You can quickly open any website URL without opening Edge browser app.

Customizing Edge Bar Options

If you really like Edge bar then make sure to customize the settings to use it productively without disturbing your work.

Changing Edge Bar Layout

We recommend using the smaller layout so that it will not change the size of other windows and intrude in your work.

Change Edge Bar Layout

Search only layout will show you a search box which will help you to open a webpage URL or search with Bing.

You can also use “Enable floating button” to change the Edge bar as a floating icon on the screen to quickly access when needed.

Customizing Top Stories and Feed Adding New Website in a Tab

In addition to the default tabs, Edge bar allows to add your favorite websites.

Auto Launch Edge Bar when Starting Computer Problems with Edge Bar

Though Edge bar is useful to access your custom tabs, it can be annoying due to the following reasons:

We do not know why Microsoft is aggressive in pushing their MSN feed without an option to disable. The problem is that the feed will show in the local language where you are located instead of your preferred language/location. For example, you will see the MSN China feed if you have purchased the laptop from China. This is absurd as Microsoft forcibly redirects due to restriction from government instead of allowing users to customize or disable the feed.

You cannot rearrange the order of default widgets and tabs.

You can open Edge bar only through the Edge browser. However, the bar will stay even you close the browser. So, it is a confusion why this called Edge bar and part of Microsoft Edge browser.

How To Create And Use Multiple User Profiles For Microsoft Edge

Up until recently, the best browser for using multiple profiles was Google Chrome. They were the first to add the function back in 2024. Other browsers added the feature, but they weren’t as intuitive as Chrome’s profiles feature.

Recently, though, the new Microsoft Edge came on the scene with a multiple profiles feature. Because it’s built on Chromium, the feature works similarly to the Chrome versions. So if you like using various profiles but would rather not use Google, you can use Edge.

How to create a new profile

You can create another profile for a family member or separate user profiles for personal use and work use, among other reasons for creating a new profile.

Here’s how to create a new user profile.

2. Select “Add a profile.”

4. A new Edge browser window will appear. This action will also create a new, blank user profile called “Profile 1” (or Profile 2 if you already have a profile called Profile 1).

5. If you have another Microsoft account, you can log into it on this screen.

9. Select Edit.

10. Change the name of the profile and the icon if you want to personalize it.

If you want to be able to sync the information on this browser to other devices, you will need to create a Microsoft account for it. Otherwise, you can only use it on one computer. Doing this will also let you use other images for your user profile than the pre-made ones you use in a local account.

Switching between profiles

Separate user profiles are a useful feature. In fact, you can use each profile without closing the others, so if you feel like taking a break from your work browser, you can switch to your personal profile and leave the other open in the background. That’s one way to have a little fun when work gets dull.

Microsoft Bing And Edge Gains Ai

Earlier this year, Microsoft solidified its focus on AI by introducing its GPT-4 powered Bing AI, which has had its fair share of the limelight. Eventually, we saw the integration of Bing AI into Windows 11 with the new Windows Copilot and now, Microsoft is looking to make your shopping experience much more easier with AI. Here’s a look at what this is about.

Use Bing and Edge To Shop With AI!

As per the official announcement, Microsoft is looking to offer a “fully immersive shopping experience” to Bing and Edge users by combining AI with online shopping. There is a slew of AI tools within the Bing Search Engine and the Bing AI chatbot located in the Edge Sidebar.

The first update is in the form of Buying Guides. As the name suggests, based on your input keywords, the AI will create comprehensive buying guides and curated lists that fit your requirement. For example, if you are looking to build a PC, you can simply type “PC Build” in the search bar. The AI will create an expansive list that will include all the peripherals to complete a PC buildup. It will give you options for monitors, CPU choices, GPU choices, case choices, keyboards, and much more.

Additionally, you can also see side-by-side comparisons of similar products to make better purchase decisions. This feature is available right away in the U.S. for both the Bing sidebar and the Edge Chat. Global rollout of this feature has started as well and you can expect it to reach more regions soon. You will be able to access this feature via your PC and mobile devices as well.

In this way, you can be sure to get the best deal for the products you want. Even after you have completed your purchase, the AI will monitor the product price and will let you know if there is a better deal available on a similar product elsewhere. This will be an in-built feature and will be automatically initiated whenever you access shopping tools. It will soon arrive in the U.S. There is no word on a global rollout.

The last feature is in the form of Summarized Reviews and Insights. So, you have selected the monitor you want to buy and are aware of the best time of purchase. Now, how do you know if your choice is the best one? Maybe there is a better option available out there. Maybe you have overlooked a major con of the monitor. And even if none of this is your concern, based on the myriad of options available online, it is often easy to feel overwhelmed.

This comes after Google’s attempt to make shopping easier with AI using Search and Bard. There’s a virtual try-on feature to let you pick out the clothes you want and try them out online to know how well they fit you. Similarly, you can input your purchase query and Google’s generative AI will curate a list for you with current pricing, reviews, buying links, and other relevant information. You will be able to see the key pointers to keep in mind before making a purchase decision.

Microsoft Edge might not be the most popular Internet browser on the market at the moment but it is certainly one of the best. Now that Edge is running on the Chromium engine, it is far more useful and resource-friendly than ever before. It’s also getting a lot more features as time goes by, the last 6 months alone have seen Edge get some fantastic Windows 10 Registry Editor integration and security settings.

In order to keep an eye on how smoothly things are running in Microsoft Edge, it’s also possible to use the built-in Task Manager to find out exactly what aspects of Edge are using your system’s resources. Although this feature is standard in a lot of browsers, most users don’t know exactly where to find it or how to use it.

If you’ve noticed things have slowed down or just don’t load as smoothly as before it might be worth checking to see what is eating up your resources. As a general rule extensions will more than likely be using the most resources and can be found at the bottom of the list of Tasks.

Task: Shows the name of processes.

Memory: Displays the number of kilobytes used by a tab or process.

CPU: Shows the percentage of the CPU power used by a process.

Network: This column shows the amount of network bandwidth used by the selected process or tab.

Process ID: The process identifier for the process or tab which can be useful for troubleshooting. (handy for Googling problems)

Quick steps to open the Microsoft Edge Task Manager:

Open Microsoft Edge.

Press the Shift and Escape on your Keyboard.

Review and/or change anything you need to.

Alternatively, open Settings.

Go to More Tools.

And select the Task Manager.

Review and/or change anything you need to.

How do you open the Microsoft Edge Task Manager? Using Microsoft Edge’s Task Manager.

Just like most other browsers that have a Task Manager, the Task Manager in Microsoft Edge can be opened using two different methods. The first method is the easiest as it simply requires you to press the Shift and Esc keys on your keyboard when you have Microsoft Edge open. This will bring up the Task Manager for you to review and action if something requires actioning.

Microsoft has made Edge’s Task Manager very similar to Windows 10 so you shouldn’t have any issue understanding or using the Task Manager window. It’s straightforward and shows you all the information you need to make an informed decision.

How To Enable Microsoft Edge Application Guard Browser Security.

A tutorial showing you how to enable Windows Defender Application Guard for Microsoft Edge. An added level of Internet protection which isolates Microsoft Edge from the rest of your system, adding an extra layer of defense to your working environment.

How to Enable Two Factor Authentication on Firefox.

Isolating certain aspects of websites, apps, programs, and even hardware is becoming a very popular mitigation method for reducing intrusions and unauthorized access online. A classic example of this is Firefox’s recently released extension which imprisons Facebook and Instagram to there own respective browser tabs, preventing them from sniffing out data and usage information from other tabs.

How to Prevent Facebook and Instagram Stealing Your Browsing Data From Other Tabs.

Although this isn’t a completely new concept for Firefox with a container system already set up for websites, it is a very direct method for limiting two of the worst data hoarders on the Internet.

Just like Firefox’s approach, Microsoft has also taken the concept and developed it for Edge, allowing you to run Edge in a completely separate, far more secure environment. Although the feature is far more secure than a standard instance of Edge, using Application Guard does have a few little caveats that may make using it a little difficult on your system.

The first requirement is that your PC must support Hyper-V (most newer PC’s do) however you’ll also need to check if your processor has SLAT virtualization technology. Unfortunately, if your PC doesn’t meet both of these requirements, you won’t be able to use Windows Defender Application Guard in Edge.

The second thing to consider is the amount of resources required for Edge to run with Application Guard enabled. If you are using an older system you will notice a big spike in ram and CPU usage, which may make browsing the Internet with Application Guard enabled far less productive.

Lastly and most importantly, you’ll need to be running Windows 10 Pro or Enterprise to enable Application Guard for Microsoft Edge. If you are running Home or another variant of Windows 10, WDAG isn’t an option, you can enable on your system.

Note: If you enable the WDAG without meeting the requirements, your computer will have trouble rebooting after the initial restart process and instead spend a few restart cycles rolling itself back to the last working version. There is also the possibility that Windows is unable to rollback to a safe working state, although this is unlikely, it is possible.

How Do You Enable Microsoft Edge Application Guard WDAG?

To begin, open the start menu search Features, then select Turn Windows Features On or Off.

A new window will open showing that Windows is searching for and installing the required files. When it completes, you’ll be required to Restart your computer.
