Google Passkeys is a simpler but more robust replacement to the standard passwords and two-factor authentication we use today. It is tied to your Google account and will allow you to sign in to any app or website with the help of your fingerprint, face, PIN, or a pattern. Similar to how we unlock our smartphones.

Passkeys are cryptographic keys synced across your devices associated with the same Google account. These private keys are matched with the public keys held by apps and websites to confirm your identity. You can use your passkeys across multiple platforms as long as you are signed in with the same Google account.

You can use your passkey on a laptop even if it is not synced with your passkey. To do this, keep your phone near the laptop and approve the sign-in request. This will be a familiar process if you have ever tried signing in to your Google account on a new device.

In the same way, if your phone or laptop ever gets stolen, the malicious party will not have access to your fingerprint or face, which is required to use your passkeys.

They also protect you against phishing attacks since they can only be used with websites or apps that created them. If someone creates a fake sign-in page, it will not trigger your passkey. This is enough to help you understand that the website is not trustable.

Update: As of May 3rd, 2023, Google has rolled out the support for passkeys for all Google account users. For Google Workspace accounts, administrators will have to enable the Passkey. You can check Google’s official page for Passkey support across devices.

To replace your passwords with Google Passkeys, you must first enable the option for your Google account. Use the steps provided below to set up passkeys.

Step 2: Sign in with the Google account for which you want to activate passkeys.

Every time you try to sign into your Google account, you will be shown a prompt to authenticate the login with a Passkey.

If a user has created a passkey with their fingerprint and tries to sign into the same service on a PC, they will first have to authenticate it on their phone to sign in.

Passkeys are currently available for Windows, MacOS, and Android. Support for more devices, including iOS will be added later down the line. For Android, you need a device running Android version 9 or above.

According to Google, passkeys created on iOS or in Safari on macOS get stored in iCloud Keychain. Whereas passkeys you use in Google Chrome on Android are stored in the Google Password Manager.

Devices that are not added to the list of passkeys will show you a QR code prompt. You will need to scan the QR code with your Android device and then authenticate the login.

What Are Apple Passkeys And How To Use Them

Are you tired of trying to keep track of all your online passwords? Or does the fear of being a victim of a phishing attack run through your head every time you log in to an application? If so, then Apple has some good news for you. Apple has eliminated the need for passwords with passkeys. In this guide, we cover what Apple passkeys are and how you can use them on a Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

What Are Apple Passkeys?

Before we dive into the anatomy of passkeys, let’s go over how traditional passwords work.

How Do Traditional Passwords Work?

When you register an account, you enter a username and password. The application’s (or website’s) server that you are logging in to stores this information. To log in to your account, you need to enter the username and password for the server to authenticate that it’s you who’s trying to gain access by matching the entered username and password with the stored credentials.

This is how we have been logging in to our accounts, and with the use of two-factor authentication, it has become quite secure. However, there are many points of failure when you log in with a password. For instance, you can be phished.

How Do Apple Passkeys Work?

Unlike regular passwords, where you enter a secret phrase and gain access to your accounts, passkeys do things a little differently. Instead of just having one secret phrase to log you in, passkeys require two secret phrases: one that is stored on your device and verifies your identity and another that’s stored on the application’s end that authenticates its legitimacy.

The secret key stored on your device is known as a private key, and the one stored on the application’s end is known as the public key. To log in to an application or website, your device will first check the application’s public key, and when it is verified, it will use the associated private key to authorize the sign-in.

All of this happens in the background, and you only have to verify your identity with Touch ID or Face ID. Since passkeys also verify the legitimacy of the application before using your secret key to log in, there is no chance of phishing or other hacking attempts.

Good to know: if you want to stay on top phishing and hacking attempts, you may need to change password, and maybe even your Apple ID.

Which Devices Support Passkeys?

Apple announced Passkeys for iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura. If your device supports these updates, then you can use passkeys to log in. One thing to keep in mind is that passkeys are not Apple’s exclusive feature.

In fact, it was developed by the “FIDO (Fast IDentity Online) Alliance,” an open alliance of tech companies. They work to ensure that the reliance on passwords is decreased due to the threats they pose. It’s also a reason that another name for a passkey is FIDO authentication.

Google also announced that passkeys would be available in Android by the end of 2023 for developer testing. Windows will be getting support for passkey in the near future as well.

How to Enable Passkeys on iPhone or iPad

Before you start using passkeys to log in to applications or websites on your iPhone or iPad, you’ll need to make sure iCloud Keychain is enabled. Follow the steps below:

Open the settings app on your iPhone or iPad and scroll down to the “Passwords” menu.

Tap “Password Options.”

Make sure “Autofill Passwords” is turned on and enable “iCloud Passwords & Keychain” from the menu below.

After enabling iCloud Keychain, Apple will ask you to authorize this action with two-factor authentication. If you haven’t set up 2FA already, do that before you enable Keychain.

How to Set Up Apple Passkeys on iPhone or iPad

Whether you’re creating a new account on a site/application or upgrading a preexisting one to use a passkey, the transition is quite simple. The only catch is that the app or website needs to have official support for passkeys.

Follow these steps to create a passkey on iPhone or iPad:

Go to the application or website that supports Fido authentication (or passkeys).

Tap “Register,” “Sign in,” or “Sign up,” depending on the situation.

Enter your information or let Autofill do it for you.

After entering the information once, Apple will ask if you want to save a passkey for the site or application.

Tap “Continue” and Apple will verify this change by using Touch ID or Face ID.

How to Recover Your Apple Passkey If You Lose Your Device

If you lose your device that has the passkey, you can use your other devices to sign in, as, again, the iCloud Keychain syncs passkeys across all Apple devices.

However, if you lose your only Apple device, you need to use the iCloud Keychain escrow to recover the passkey. iCloud Keychain escrow uses a secure infrastructure to ensure that only an authorized person recovers the lost passkey.

To recover your Apple passkey using another (or a new) Apple device (Mac, iPhone, or iPad):

Authenticate your identity by logging in to your iCloud account. If the device is not trusted, you may also receive an authentication SMS on your trusted phone number that you will have to enter before you’re logged in to your iCloud account.

Enter your device’s password.

Your passkeys will now be restored to the new device after verification.

Note that you only have 10 attempts to authenticate your identity, after which, iCloud will permanently delete the escrow and Keychain records. This security measure provides protection against a brute-force attack.

Apple cannot read the passkeys, as they are stored in the iCloud Keychain. Along with being synced across all of your Apple devices, they are also end-to-end encrypted.

1. Page Zoom Adjustment

This feature helps to adjust the page zoom level of the current active page.

If you browse without the mouse, you can use the keyboard shortcuts to make the changes:

Increase zoom level by pressing “Ctrl + +” keys.

Decrease zoom level by pressing “Ctrl + -” keys.

“Ctrl + 0” to restore the default zoom level.

The above method works only on the currently opened webpage and you need to set the zoom level every time. Don’t worry, Chrome also allows you to setup the page zoom level permanently for all the pages.

You will see the zoom level is set as per your preference.

Remember, website content may look different at higher zoom level. For example, with horizontal scroll bar. You need to set the level for your eye convenience and for your monitor display.

2. Customizing Font Size and Face

Similar to page zoom level, you can setup the fonts for your reading.

Open Chrome and navigate to “Chrome Menu” and select “Settings” options at the bottom of the menu list.

On the “Settings” page, scroll down and check under “Appearance” section.

Select the “Font size” from the dropdown. Chrome recommends medium level, you can choose large or small as per your convenience.

Modify the font face, size and width to your taste and exit the “Settings” page.

3. Keyboard Access Features

Google Chrome supports full-keyboard accessibility for users who are unable to use pointing devices such as mouse. Some of the navigation keyboard shortcuts:

Use “Shift + Alt + B” to focus the “Bookmarks” bar, then use the “Right or Left” arrow or “Tab” to move across the tool bar.

Press “Shift + Alt + T” to focus the “Main Toolbar”.

Press “F10 or Alt” key to focus on the chrome menu icon and hit “Enter” to expand the menu.

Other helpful navigation shortcuts include:

Shift from the current tab to the next by pressing “Ctrl + Tab” keys.

Close the current tab with “Ctrl + W” keys.

“Ctrl + 1-8” and “Ctrl + 9” to switch to the specified tab number and to the last tab respectively.

If you use Windows 10 PC, search “PC Settings” from the Windows search box and hit enter to open the Windows settings app. Then select the “Ease of Access” options.

On the left-side panel, select narrator. Toggle on the “Narrator” switch on the right-hand panel and then scroll down to modify other settings to your preference.

Once you have activated the Windows accessibility features, close the settings screen.

Open Google Chrome and starting browsing. The Windows accessibility features will now be active in Chrome.

You can also access “Ease of Access Center” from “Control Panel” and activate the necessary settings on your PC.

With Google changing its SERPs so often, it is essential to be aware of several tools that would number Google SERPs for you.

Understanding the Limitations

When you number Google results, you should know what to expect and what not. All of the browser addons and extensions that number Google results have a few limitations in common:

They all number indented results incorrectly: showing it going next to the main listing (which is not always true);

They all number universal (blended) search results which interferes in the normal SERPs order.

Teams, as you might know, has a separate space — Channels — that houses these apps, allowing you to interact with them freely. At the end of the day, both applications are doing their bit to make third-party essentials available through them, hoping to keep more users hooked to their service.

Are Zoom Apps available to free users?

‘Apps’ is a newly incorporated service on Zoom, which should help the company reel in more users. And, of course, they do not want to make the free users feel left out of the new Zoom experience. So, as of now, Zoom Apps are available for both free and paid users. All you need is a free Zoom account, and you should get the option to add and use Zoom apps in meetings.

How to get Zoom Apps

Now that you know what Zoom apps are and their purpose, let’s get down to adding them to Zoom.

Through the standard Zoom interface

Since you haven’t added any apps yet, you’ll need to go to the ‘Discover’ tab.

Zoom will launch the browser and take you to its authentication page. Enter your credentials and then authorize the app to appear in Zoom meetings.

The app would be added and appear under the ‘My Apps’ apps.

If all goes according to plan, you would have the Zoom application available to you inside the meeting window.

You can use Zoom apps in one of two ways, and we will take a look at both in this section.

How to uninstall Zoom Apps

Zoom Apps are excellent tools to keep the meeting attendees engaged, but too many applications will not do anyone any favors. So, when you feel a little overwhelmed with the selection of applications you have at your disposal, you must find a way to uninstall the applications. Here is how you can uninstall Zoom apps without breaking a sweat. 

Through Zoom client

Now, go to the ‘My Apps’ tab.

This would take you to the Zoom Apps Marketplace on your default browser. Here, you will find all the applications you have downloaded and installed so far. On the right of the application, adjacent to the application details, you will find an ‘Uninstall’ button.

The app would be uninstalled immediately.

Alternatively, you could skip going through the Zoom desktop client and go straight to the installed app section of the Zoom marketplace: chúng tôi The link would take you straight to the list of applications you have installed on Zoom. You’re not running the latest version

If you cannot see the feature for some reason, first, make sure you are running the latest version of the Zoom application on your computer. Older versions — released before the last week of July 2023 — will not have the Apps tab at the top. 

If yes, it will be installed right away. 

The account administrator has turned off the setting

The administrator of your organization has a considerable degree of control over your Zoom account. And they can very easily restrict the access of Apps during a Zoom meeting. So, if you are already running the latest version of Zoom, it makes perfect sense to have a chat with your account administrator. Chances are, they have restricted your account from accessing the Apps section. 

What are the downsides of Zoom apps?

As we have discussed, Zoom Apps are meant to keep Zoomers occupied, to make them as efficient as possible during meetings. The new Apps can improve team bonding, aid communication, and help teams express their ideas as freely as possible. While all of these things might come off as rewarding and encouraging, the new feature may invite more Zoom fatigue. 

Since the new apps aim to give a feeling of escapism, it will not be unusual for users to spend hours on them, which could be draining, both mentally and physically. So, the best course of action would to be limit exposure and use Zoom Apps in moderation — for crucial tasks and limited interactions. For everything else, closing Zoom and doing them physically would be key.

Each one of the above must be activated individually, meaning you will have to spend a little time doing so, although it’s not all that much work. It’s also worth noting that if you do not like the new look you can always revert back to the old one by disabling the feature.

The first Material design we are going to change is the Extensions page, so open Chrome and a new tab, then enter the following address: chrome://flags/#enable-md-extensions into the address bar. (Feel free to cut and paste it from here to save yourself some time)

If you have entered the text correctly, you will see a newly highlighted option selected, just change the option from Disabled to Enabled. Once you have flipped the option to enabled, you will need to save the changes at the bottom, then Restart Chrome. Next time you open Chrome the extension page will have a new look and layout.

In order to change the other four remaining Material designs, you will need to enter the same address as above, however, this time changing the ending, for example, the previous address was:

The new address should look like this.

As you can see, only the ending changes to either one of the 5 options listed above. Once entered correctly, you can enable the new Material Design in the same way as the first extensions one. Just remember if you do not like the new layout or you find it confusing, you can always just use the same address to go back to the settings page and disable it.

It’s probably worth noting though, that at some stage Google will enable all of these new Material Designs as default, so there is no point hiding from the future, you might as well embrace it. Personally, I think the new interfaces make things a lot more simple, especially the changes to the extensions page
