Sun used to be an easy target for snark and editorializing. Many a column was written about how its management seemed cocky and clueless, and the company seemed to stuck in the glory days mindset suitable to pre-Internet-Bust days.

Times have changed, and those days are over.

Although Sun’s understanding of open source seems clear as mud some days, it did sail on that ship, and it was busy planting seeds and embracing the green movement before most of the OEMs gave more than a cursory glance to power limitations that have become front and center in the past 12 months or so.

Sun also embraced the virtualization game earlier this decade, with the addition of LDOMs and Containers in the latest major version of Solaris.

Now Sun is partnering with VMware to bring its Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) solution to the Sun Ray system. The Sun Ray is cool. Say what you will about thin clients, but there is much to love about popping a pluggable smartcard into your pocket rather than dragging a bulky laptop around.

On Monday, VMware made a number of announcements centered around thin-client developments and professional services. Among the news to come out of Palo Alto was a glimpse of an integrated desktop solution designed to leverage its VDI platform with Sun Ray Software and virtual display clients.

The Sun Ray system is an ideal candidate for VDI because it is already functioning as such.

Both models have the same end goal: streamline desktop management while reducing desktop TCO; increase the IT department’s control; keep data secure; and enhance the user experience, flexibility and productivity.

The combined solution uses Sun’s Appliance Link Protocol (ALP) to deliver VDI over networks with high latency. Both VMware and Sun needed to make some changes to create a truly blended solution. Some integration points along with other changes had to be made “so that they communicate with each other,” Jerry Chen, senior director of enterprise desktops at VMware, told ServerWatch.

By all accounts, the tweaks accomplished what they set out to do, as tests to date show dramatic performance increases in WAN deployments, Chen said.

Although the solution was first announced Monday, it has actually been available for some time, Chen said. Any organization with a Sun Ray can buy the software.

The integrated solution is available for purchase directly from Sun as well as through various joint Sun and VMware Partners. Sun is providing first line support for the solution.

Just as Sun is hardly exclusive in its relationship with VMware, VMware is not particularly partial to Sun. And with Microsoft nipping at its heels, it would be foolish for VMware to hitch its wagon to a single horse.

Thus, it’s hardly surprising that VMware also publicly launched a VDI certification program for thin-client vendors.

The new VMware certification program aims to do for the thin clients what its hardware certification program has done for servers. Since 2000, the company has worked with hardware companies to test and optimize products for VMware Infrastructure. To date, nearly 2,000 server and storage hardware models from 46 vendors are certified.

The 11 thin-client vendors are listed in the VMware Certified Compatibility Guide. VMware certifies that their devices have passed its testing criteria for interoperability and quality assurance.

The battle for the virtual desktop rages on.

Quest Software and Parallels today revealed plans to offers its virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) bundle, which is designed to deliver a centralized Windows desktop deployment and management platform.

Parallels is on a roll these days. Last week, it stamped its Parallels Server gold. The hypervisor-based server virtualization solution is designed to enable users to run multiple copies of Mac OS X Server on a single a Mac Pro or Xserve.

Quest is no stranger to virtualization. VAS, which Quest picked up along with Provision Networks last fall, is actually a fifth-generation desktop virtualization offering, Paul Ghostine, vice president and general manager of Quest Software’s Provision Networks Division, told ServerWatch.

The product cut its teeth in the terminal services space, he said, before moving on to Virtual Iron and Hyper-V. This latest release includes Parallels integration.

It’s also designed to offer full integration (not simply user authentication) for VMware and Virtual Iron. This release also fixes many of the bugs previously part and parcel of working with VMware, Ghostine said.

So why standardize around VAS? Ghostine explained that in addition to addressing all of the current major desktop channels, VAS is architected around the management of a native single image, the resulting bundle is “much more scalable than other virtualization models, delivers much higher consolidation ratios and better ROI.”

Not surprisingly, this results in a lower total cost of ownership, which no doubt is a key selling point in these increasingly budget-conscious times. And VAS doesn’t exactly break the bank on the front end, either. At $140 per concurrent desktop connection, VAS is built to provide painless way for a virtualization-savvy enterprise to get its feet wet.

It’s getting harder to remain cynical about the virtual desktop. If nothing else, the constant barrage of VDI initiative is legitimizing the much-maligned architecture.

Reigning in Sprawl

While Quest was busy taking the desktop virtual, Embotics aimed to simplify the life cycle of the virtual server. The software vendor released version 2.0 of V-Commander, its virtualization life cycle management tool.

V-Commander is designed to reduce virtual sprawl, automate lifecycle management and extend management systems.

New in 2.0 are expanded policy and reporting capabilities, an improved dashboard, and a more streamlined installation and configuration workflow featuring automatic VM identification tagging and the capability to associate and assign policies to groups as opposed to individual VMs.

The policy enhancements can be as nitty-gritty as the organization desires, Embotics vice president of marketing David Lynch told ServerWatch. For example. an organization can create logical groupings of hosts and apply policy (e.g., to create a production environment and enforce policy around).

It also offers automatic recognition and action for unauthorized virtual machines or production machines that end up in the DMZ. A Reclamation Policy has been added that includes an “end of life trigger.”

V-Commander 2.0 is scheduled to begin shipping on July 11. It’s currently in beta, and some customers are confident enough in its readiness to have deployed the beta version in production environments, Lynch said. Not terribly surprising given that this release follows the previous version by a mere 11 months, and all of the new features are customer-driven.

Within a few short days I was able to spell out anything using the NATO alphabet, and I retained the knowledge for months. Recently, I came across something called the Janki Method, in which you use spaced repetition to learn anything, including computer programming, and not just limited sets of data.

The key piece here is creating your own decks of cards. Anki plugs into a free service called AnkiWeb, which hosts many ready-made shared card decks. There are some users who carefully created extensive decks of cards for learning anything from anatomy to Japanese, and it is very easy to download these packs. Creating one from scratch seemed like a lot of work, until I realized the key was to do it incrementally, one new datum at a time, as I learn.

Once the answer is revealed, Anki asks you to rate how easy or difficult it was to recall.

Anki makes it very easy to create new cards, and you can create different types of cards. The most basic type is the traditional flash card. There’s also a reverse card, where you’re sometimes shown the front (“Chair”) and sometimes the back (“Silla,” Spanish for chair). You only enter the information once, and Anki is smart enough to generate multiple cards based on the data.

Anki also features more traditional flash cards, with front and back sides.

Another great type of card is the Cloze, where you include a paragraph of text and blank out some words (“O say can you see […] early light”). Anki then shows you the card and you need to recall the missing part. You can also use one block of text to generate many Cloze-type cards, making card generation very easy.

Unlike with physical cards, Anki shows you the front and back at the same time.

You can also have Anki prompt you to type in the right answer using your keyboard, which is excellent for mastering programming language syntax. There is an art to creating the right type of cards: SuperMemo, a commercial spaced repetition product that preceded Anki, put together a great list of the 20 rules of formulating knowledge in learning.

Below are some tips I’ve learned over the years to first determine if the conference or event is a good fit for you, and then build business from your presentation.

Below is a list of what you should consider before you speak. It will help you to avoid certain issues, know what goals to set up for yourself from the session, and help you put together your presentation.

Evaluating a Show

When looking at trade shows accepting speaker proposals, think about who the attendees are and what your goals by reaching out to them. If you are speaking to a panel of peers, chances are you won’t get clients, but you can still grow your company through backlinks.

To set up goals for the presentation, ask questions like:

Do you want backlinks and a PR list?

Do you want clients and new business?

Do you want new partners and followers to build your personal or company’s reputation?

Other times, attendees may quote you or share slides on social media, which can help build your following. Look through the attendees and try to figure out if your session can attract the right people to help boost your business, even if the boost comes at a later date.

Are You an Expert or Equal to Your Panelists?

Although your boss or CEO may not like it, don’t be company-centric. It’s okay to mention competing products and tools. This shows you aren’t biased and are willing to be open and honest. I mention competitors’ firms and tips I’ve learned from them all the time when I speak. It helps to build trust and credibility with the attendees.


When you first start speaking, you need to know how to pick a show that can build business and how to properly present yourself. Think about the attendees and how they can benefit you and your company. Then, evaluate how to tie in your own skill sets with the topic of the presentation so the audience knows what questions to ask based on your expertise. Last, remember to include ways to contact you so new clients and potential backlinks can find you.
