Have you seen the small GIF videos on social networking sites and want to make your own with your photos and videos? It’s a job made much easier with the app PicGIF Lite. Trying it out, I was able to make an animated GIF in less than five minutes start to finish, and you can too!


The picGIF app accepts many different image formats and all common video formats. The app says you can drag and drop onto the pop up screen on opening the app, but it wouldn’t allow me to do this. However, I was able to work around it by just choosing “Add Photo” or “Add Video” in the File menu, or by doing “Command + O” or “Command + D”, respectively. Even though it says “Add Photo,” you can add in multiple files at once.

Customization of Pictures

Once you have added the photos, you have several options to customize the gif. Under the “Properties” menu in PicGIF, you can change the size of the output or keep with the default of 360 x 240 pixels and can also choose whether they will be presented portrait or landscape. At the bottom, you can also choose whether you want it auto optimized for quality or whether you want better quality, which will of course take longer.

Next is deciding how it will handle the photos if they don’t match the exact size of the output, whether you want them sized to fit, stretched, etc., and to choose a background color for when they don’t fit. Speed is the next option to be determined, either to leave it on Auto or to set the speed yourself. The photos will either be in the sequence you added them in or you can choose to have it go in reverse.

In the “Effects” menu, you can choose among popular options – Original, Vintage, Marcato, and B&W. After you make your choice, you can set the bars for Saturation, Hue, Exposure, Contrast, and Brightness. These are much like you would find in your standard photo apps.

Customization of Videos

There aren’t that many options for creating video GIFs. Actually there are, but you need to buy the full version app for $4.99. For this price, you will be able to trim the video as you wish, add text, and add stickers. By sticking with the free version you are limited to either having it autoplay or changing the frames per second. You can also import existing GIFs and edit them. Saving this gif took longer than with the photos, but I was using a longer video.


If your main reason for wanting this app is to create GIFs from videos, you’ll do best spending the $4.99 for the full version, since there isn’t much you can do with videos and the free version. However, if you want to create GIFs from photos, this free version will be more than adequate.

Adding exquisite effects to your photos before uploading them on social networks has become the norm. Just select a sketch effect from the list, and upload your photo on the next page. You can upload photos from your PC, by using a URL or directly from Facebook.

Once the photo is uploaded, the sketch effect will be automatically be added after a short delay. It doesn’t offer any customization options, and there is no support for color in this effect. However, its fast and no-brainer process may make it the first choice for many. I must also say that the sketch effect is really good, and I think you may not even need any customization options at all (check the picture below).


Turning your photos into sketch can make them look really cool. You can use any of the above-mentioned tools, and you should be able to convert your photos into sketch. I would recommend Picture to People if you want complete control. Although, the sketch effect provided by PhotoFunia is pleasing as well if you want something simple.

No, Scientists Didn’t Turn Mice Into Killer Zombies

Mind-controlled zombie mice do well on Google News. So do headlines about flipping a “killer instinct” switch. That’s why press releases love phrases like that, and why you’ve probably seen headlines with nearly identical phrasing for the past day or so. Here’s the problem: they’re all pretty misleading.

On Thursday, neuroscientists at Yale University published a paper in the journal Cell showing how they could trigger a mouse’s predatory instincts with a clever genetic trick. Key word: instinct. They’re not engineering mice to be mindless killers, roaming cages in search of their next target. They’re prompting the mice to do something they already do in the wild: hunt. And yes, they did turn the mice into unusually efficient hunters, which I suppose you could argue counts as turning on their “killer instinct.” But it’s a totally natural instinct that wild mice have to have in order to survive—we just don’t normally observe it, because we see mice in cages chowing on food pellets.

That’s the whole reason that this group at Yale was studying predator behavior in the first place. Ivan de Araujo, the senior investigator on these experiments, mostly studies feeding behavior. He decided to look at predator instincts after realizing that cage feeding might not be natural. He’s quoted in the press release saying just that: “They have nothing else to do other than eat the pellets we throw in the cage,” he says. “I began to wonder how natural and relevant this behavior is.”

To be clear: this is a crucial question to ask. If an alien species were studying human feeding behavior, but all they ever looked at was how people ate at public events, we wouldn’t think their studies were all that relevant to our actual lives. So in an effort to look at a mouse’s hunting behavior, de Araujo began researching brain areas that control hunting and feeding. One part of the brain in particular—the central nucleus of the amygdala—was associated almost exclusively with hunting, so he looked there for more clues.

You start by genetically engineering mice to express an enzyme called Cre—only in the neurons that you want to study. Then you inject a virus into their brains that contains a light-sensitive protein, which can only be incorporated into the neurons that have the Cre enzyme. You end up with a very specific set of neurons that are activated when you insert a fiber optic light into the mouse’s brain. And if those neurons happen to control a physical process, like hunting or biting, the result looks a lot like mind control. You can use optogenetics to do other things, like implant false memories into a mouse’s brain or selectively erase them. It’s experiments like these that made optogenetics one of the breakthroughs of the decade in *Science * magazine.

To use optogenetics to activate a mouse’s predatory instinct is as simple as identifying a set of neurons that are sufficient to trigger the predatory behavior. This helps scientists understand how the brain controls hunting. It doesn’t make mice into zombies.

We should appreciate this study for the incredible precision with which the researchers executed their experiments and the scientific curiosity it took to notice how one brain area might differ from the others. We should be in awe of how powerful these techniques have become. Scientists can reach into a mouse brain and turn on only the neurons that they want to—that’s freaking ridiculous. But we shouldn’t blithely compare that feat to an episode of The Walking Dead.

Besides, the whole reason that zombies scare people is that they eat other humans and infect their victims. Unless fiber optic cables are infectious, I think the rest of the mouse world can still rest easy.

How To Share Photos And Videos From Camera To Shared Library On Iphone

iOS 16 introduces a neat little way to share pictures and videos with your friends and family using iCloud Shared Photo Library. When you use this feature, you and other participants can host pictures from a specific date or those with specific people inside a Shared Library where everyone can view, add, and edit content in one place. 

While you can transfer any of your existing pictures and videos to the Shared Library, Apple also makes this experience easier by allowing you to transfer pictures you capture directly from the Camera app to the Shared Library. In this post, we’ll help you enable this option for your iOS Camera app and explain how you can capture pictures and videos directly to the Shared Library on iOS 16. 

How to enable Shared Library for iOS Camera

Required version: iOS 16 update

In order to share pictures to Shared Library directly from your camera, you need to set up Shared Library first on your iPhone (on iOS 16) and then have Sharing from Camera option enabled inside your Shared Library. If you don’t enable this feature inside your iPhone settings, the Shared Library option won’t show up inside the Camera app.

To enable Sharing from Camera, open the Settings app. 

Inside Settings, select Photos. 

On the next screen, tap on Shared Library under “Library”. 

With Shared Library already turned on, tap on Sharing from Camera from the Shared Library screen. 

On the next screen, turn on the Sharing from Camera toggle at the top.

When you enable this, you’ll get additional options to configure this feature. To ensure you only share pictures to the Shared Library on your own from the Camera app, select Share Manually. If you choose Share Automatically, iOS will add the pictures you capture from the Camera automatically whenever it detects you’re with the chosen participants via Bluetooth. 

Once you’ve configured the Sharing from Camera option, you can proceed to the next section to capture photos and send them to the Shared Library. 

How to share photos and videos to Shared Library directly from Camera

To save photos from your camera to shared library, all you need to do is enable the sharing within camera settings on your iPhone. Here’s how to do it.

Open the Camera app on your iPhone.

Inside the Camera app, tap on the multi-user icon (struck diagonally to indicate that it’s disabled for now) at the top left corner. This will enable the Shared Library mode in the camera app.

Once enabled, the icon will have a yellow background, meaning it is turned on. You will also see the “Shared Library” banner at the top that tells you that any pictures and videos you capture now will be sent saved in the Shared Library, too.  

That’s all. With the Shared Library mode enabled, you can start capturing pictures by tapping on the Shutter button as they will be saved with your shared libraries as applicable.

This will also work when recording videos, slow-mo shots, portraits, and panorama pictures. 

How to turn off Shared Library when taking pictures

If you’ve been taking pictures to the Shared Library from Camera, you can stop sending your captured content to the Shared Library at any time.

To turn off Shared Library mode inside Camera, open the Camera app on iOS. 

When the Camera opens, tap on the multi-user icon at the top left corner. 

This will unhighlight this icon and you’ll see a “Personal Library” banner at the top of the screen. 

All pictures and videos you capture now will be saved to your Personal Library inside Photos and won’t be shared automatically with participants in your Shared Library. 

How to view photos and videos in Shared Library

You can see what photos and videos you have shared with participants in your Shared Library from the Photos app. To check what has been shared until now, launch the Photos app on your iPhone. 

Inside Photos, tap on the 3-dots icon at the top right corner. If you’re currently in your Personal Library, you’ll need to tap on the single-user icon instead. 

In the overflow menu that appears, select Shared Library. 

You’ll now see all the pictures you have shared with others in the Shared Library. You’ll also see the Shared Library icon at the top right corner instead of the 3-dots icon.

How To Make Your Mac Turn On And Off On A Schedule

Your Mac can be made to power on and shut down on a custom schedule. Having your computer start up 15 minutes or so before you get up from bed in the morning is a great way to have your emails, photos, messages, calendars and other personal information items updated and refreshed before you even touch the keyboard. If your computer happens to be sleeping at its scheduled shutdown time, it will continue sleeping instead of shutting down. Similarly, if you’re logged out (i.e. you’re at macOS’s Login screen), your Mac also won’t shut down.

If your Mac is set to go to sleep after less than 15 minutes of inactivity, it might go back to sleep before macOS has finished shutting it down. To ensure the system shuts down even when it’s sleeping, set it to start up or wake 5 minutes before your scheduled shutdown time.

Also, having any documents open with unsaved changes may prevent a Mac from going to sleep or shut down when scheduled. And lastly, if you’re going to make your Mac start up on a schedule, be sure that it’s connected to a power adapter.

While some people will find it more convenient to just put their Mac to sleep when it’s not in use, shutting it down at the end of the day not only saves more power than the sleep mode, but also give it a chance to install pending updates that require a restart, flush the caches and perform other housekeeping operations as part of the general maintenance routine.

As I mentioned earlier, you may want to use power scheduling in macOS if you want to be sure your Mac turns off when you aren’t working and turns on before you come to work.
