Suggested March 2024 This Sailplane Could Cruise Mars For Months On Only Wind
In the nearly 120 years since the birth of the airplane, humans have been able to design aircraft that break the sound barrier and careen upside down through Earth’s skies. Flying high on another world, however, is another matter entirely.
A team of aerospace engineers from the University of Arizona and NASA Ames Research Center were inspired to design a new concept for off-world aerial exploration: the Mars Sailplane. Their concept, detailed recently in the journal Aerospace, describes a plane that relies not on any motor or engine, but the power of the wind to soar above the clouds.
Creating a vehicle capable of long-term flight on Mars has historically been a difficult task to get off the ground. There are numerous conditions on the Red Planet that make flying aircraft much different than on Earth—such as vast dust storms, less surface gravity, and an atmosphere 100 times thinner than our own. But in 2023, the Mars Helicopter, Ingenuity, proved that powered flight on another was possible. During its inaugural flight, the small rotor helicopter climbed to about 10 feet from the Martian surface, and was able to hover for about half a minute.
[Related: There are no shortcuts when you build a drone destined for Mars]
Since then, Ingenuity has made 29 successful flights over the surface. Yet one of the vehicle’s most significant challenges is its constant need for solar power to operate. “Fixed-wing airplanes are limited by propulsion,” says Adrien Bouskela, lead author of the sailplane study and a mechanical engineering researcher at the University of Arizona. “So what can we do to extend flight paths, [or] the available fuel onboard?”
The Mars Sailplane team also plans to engineer the craft to be completely autonomous, given that they will need to be able to monitor atmospheric changes and quickly adjust to stay adrift. Bouskela and his collaborators have already designed a computer algorithm to do this on Earth, but it will have to be modified to Mars if the sailplane is to survive there.
“It’ll have to be a piece of code in there that monitors the wind, logs the wind, maps the wind, and then finds an optimal trajectory within it,” Bouskela says.
The sailplanes are not only energy-saving, but cost-saving as well. These crafts are generally inexpensive to produce, lightweight, and because they are inflatable, small enough to fit in a shoebox. Jekan Thanga, an associate professor of aerospace and mechanical engineering at the University of Arizona, says it’s possible that they could one day be deployed as a secondary payload on future Mars flagship missions—or even be packed inside a fleet of CubeSats. Such an easy development process certainly makes mass production an compelling idea.

Once the craft finally lands on the Red Planet’s surface, the sailplane’s flight time will unfortunately be over. But while grounded, it can still be put to use.
Right now, the team imagines the sailplane will have a “second life” as a weather station. As it is equipped with cameras and temperature, pressure and gas sensors, the craft will continue to observe and record atmospheric data from its remote location. Eventually, with enough perched sailplanes, the intel they send back could be used to create better numerical models of Mars’ enigmatic weather systems.
“We have some data about the Martian atmosphere, but … not enough,” says Alexandre Kling, a NASA research scientist and co-author of the study. “So the purpose of the mission is to learn more about the environment.”
The team conducted a tethered launch of an early version of the Mars Sailplane, in which it descended slowly to Earth attached to a balloon. College of Engineering/University of Arizona
Once the technology develops even further, Thanga notes that a “whole ecosystem of flying vehicles” could more closely explore places like Mars’ Grand Canyon, as well as the planet’s volcanic regions and highlands. Until then, the sailplane project is still in an early prototype phase, but could be ready for a space mission in two or three years with proper funding. In the meantime, the team plans to put the craft to the test here on Earth soon: Later this summer, the engineers will take the models to an airfield and fly them 15,000 feet up into the air, high enough where wind conditions resemble those on Mars.
There’s still a lot to learn before these sailplane prototypes are ready to soar across the Martian sky, but as Kling stresses, a high risk reaps a high reward.
“We can fly on Mars,” says Kling. “I’m not saying it’s easy, but it’s just so, so promising.”

In The Martian, fictional astronaut Mark Watney rides around Mars in a badass, futuristic-looking rover. Well, like most things in the book/movie, turns out that vehicle isn’t so far from reality. NASA hopes to send humans to Mars in the 2030s or 40s, and in preparation, they’re developing the Space Exploration Vehicle—a rover that looks strikingly familiar to anyone who’s seen the movie. At the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Popular Science got to ride in it.
Full disclosure: This trip was paid for by Twentieth Century Fox, the makers of The Martian movie, which comes out on Blu-Ray/DVD on January 12.
NASA’s Space Exploration Vehicle is a just a prototype for now, but future solar-powered versions might one day fly to Mars, arriving on one of several pre-supply missions that will deliver food heavy equipment ahead of the astronauts’ arrival.
The rover has twelve wheels, arranged in six sets of two, and each pair rotates 360 degrees. That means it can turn on a dime and drive sideways as well as forward and backward.
Cameras on each side of the vehicle help the driver navigate in all directions.
Control panels inside the rover
The fact that the wheels have a turning radius of zero helps the rover traverse the sort of rocky landscapes it will encounter on Mars.
It’s a bumpy ride, but the rover doesn’t get stuck.
Inside, the rover comfortably seats a driver, co-pilot, and four people on benches in the back. Going over slopes can feel a little treacherous, but the driver, Lucien Junkin, assures us that the rover can master hills as steep as 55 degrees.
Junkin says the vehicle can move at up to 10 miles per hour, and NASA says it’ll hold up even after a few thousand miles of driving.
In The Martian, Watney accidentally flips his rover upside down, so I ask Junkin how the Space Exploration Vehicle manages to stay upright. Although the cabin looks large compared to the wheels, “it’s really very, very light relative to the rest of the vehicle,” he says. Below the cabin, hundreds of pounds of batteries help to stabilize it, and so does the wide footprint provided by the wheel positioning.
Still, the ride is nerve-wracking, with everyone struggling to stay in their seats as the rover throws us around. The engine whirs, and the body of the rover creaks from the stress of the inclines and bumps.
Up near the pilot’s seat, a bubble sticks out to allow future astronauts to look below the vehicle, to inspect the local geology without having to don a space suit.
Bubble on the front end of the rover lets the driver look under the vehicle to inspect rocks
And speaking of space suits, you might have noticed the empty one that dangles off the back of the rover like a Halloween decoration.
The SEV carries a space suit on its back-end
That suit is actually connected to the rover via an airlock, so astronauts can easily suit up to go outside.
Space suit port
Astronauts who need to leave the vehicle can use this handy port to slip into a suit. An airlock closes behind the suit so that air and heat aren’t lost from the vehicle.
The next version of the rover will drive slightly faster, at about 12 miles an hour. That one will also be pressurized, with working airlocks to better simulate the airtight vessel that’ll be needed on Mars.
Let’s hope it also comes with seat belts.
If you are looking for a way to either view or hide ‘Adult Only’ games on Steam, this article will show you how to do both. Adult Only games are a new category of games recently added to Steam that consists of games with a large focus on nudity, sex, and violence. A category of games that Steam has long been avoiding.

While there is some preliminary evidence that sunlight, heat, and humidity could slow the spread of COVID-19, the summer months also promise a host of new risks, The Washington Post reports. Soaring temperatures will either compel people wanting relief to go outside, where they could get infected, or the pandemic will force people to stay indoors, where they could swelter. Both the pandemic and extreme heat pose a mortal risk to the elderly and the infirm.
Experts say that climate change will likely compound the problem. Much of the country can expect unusually high temperatures this summer, relative to average temperatures between 1981 and 2010. The projections, from the National Weather Service, are consistent with the long-term warming trend. The northeast, which has been hit hard by the coronavirus, faces an especially high risk of warmer weather. No part of the country is looking forward to an unusually cool summer.
It won’t be possible to determine the role of climate change until after the season has passed, experts say. The forecast of an exceptionally balmy summer comes as no surprise, given that since 1980, the contiguous US has warmed close to 1 degree C, according to data from NOAA.
“Every summer that we have is taking place in a world in which global warming is already occurring,” says Justin Mankin, a climate scientist at Dartmouth University, adding that climate change is upping the odds of severe summer heat. “We have pretty good evidence that extreme temperatures are increasing faster than average temperatures due to global warming,” he says.
This map shows the likelihood that different parts of the country will see above-average temperatures from May through July, compared to the average from 1981 to 2010. National Weather Service
One reason is that warmer weather is drying out soil early in the season, making it hotter later on. When the soil is moist, some of that moisture evaporates, cooling off the ground—but when the soil is dry, the ground stays warm.
Climate change is also producing more days that are both hot and humid, says Radley Horton, a climate scientist at Columbia University. As oceans warm, more seawater is evaporating, turning the air more humid, which is making hot days more miserable.
“One thing that worries us about really extreme heat and humidity is that if the air becomes humid enough, it’s basically impossible for somebody to stay cool,” Horton says. When you sweat, the water on your skin evaporates, cooling you off. But when it’s muggy out, the air is already saturated, so the sweat just clings to your skin. If it’s humid enough, healthy people can die in heat waves because they cannot cool off.
“From a summer standpoint, the things that I think are going to be really damaging are the combined heat and humidity events,” Mankin says. “For the same temperature, New York has a higher incidence of heat-related mortality than Arizona does. And the reason is because when heat hits New York City, it comes with humidity.”
Crucially, heat waves don’t pose the same risk to all people. “They affect the most vulnerable among us, just like COVID-19,” Mankin said. “The ability to cool yourself is increasingly a sign of wealth.”
Heat waves are often more severe in low-income communities and communities of color because these neighborhoods tend to lack trees or parks that would help keep the temperature low. People in these communities are also less likely to own air conditioners, and those that do may leave their air conditioners off to avoid high power bills, Horton said.
“There are a lot of people who don’t have their own air conditioners. Are they going to be able to get to cooling centers? Are the cooling centers going to be open?” he said, pointing to lockdown measures that have kept people indoors. “Some people rely on going to the beach or going to public pools to cool off as well. Is that option going to be there?”
Communities of color are facing both more cases of the coronavirus and higher levels of pollution, which is significant, given that sufferers living in polluted areas are more likely to die of the disease. Severe heat will compound these risks both by worsening pollution and by weakening the body’s defenses.
“It puts a large strain on people’s bodies and can make it so that, if you’re also harboring a viral infection, you’re going to do a lot worse against that viral infection,” says Jeffrey Shaman, professor of environmental health sciences at Columbia University.
Shaman says the relationship between weather and the coronavirus is poorly understood, making it difficult to know where to seek relief during a heat wave. If the virus fares worse in heat and sunlight, as some research indicates, then people may be better off crowding together in the park than they would retreating to an air-conditioned restaurant or movie theater, however sparsely crowded. But if the virus tolerates heat and humidity better than early findings suggest, then the park could become a petri dish.
“Unfortunately, there are so many little unknowns about this, many of which stem from the fact that we just don’t understand a lot about respiratory viruses in general, let alone COVID-19,” Shaman says. Either way, severe heat complicates the problem by forcing people to choose between suffering indoors or risking infection outdoors.
“Heat waves are only going to make it more difficult,” Shaman says. “Then you’re contending with more than one problem at the same time.”
This tutorial explains why WhatsApp texts display “Waiting for this message” and four ways to reveal the content behind the error.
Before you begin troubleshooting, make sure your internet connection is working correctly. Visit a webpage or check if you can send WhatsApp messages to your contacts. Switch to a Wi-Fi connection if your cellular or mobile data connection is slow. If your Wi-Fi connection is the problem, contact your internet provider or use cellular data.
Table of ContentsWhy Is WhatsApp Displaying “Waiting for This Message”?
WhatsApp encrypts messages you send and receive so that third parties can’t monitor your conversations remotely. It’s one of the many features that make WhatsApp secure. A disruption of the message encryption process will trigger WhatsApp to hide texts behind the “Waiting for this message. This may take a while.” placeholder.
When someone texts you, WhatsApp encrypts the message on the sender’s phone before delivering it to you. Message encryption happens quickly—in milliseconds—but certain factors can interrupt or delay the operation. For example, if WhatsApp cannot fully encrypt new messages on the sender’s phone, you may not receive the text. If you do, you won’t be able to see the content of the text(s).
Instead, WhatsApp displays “Waiting for this message. This may take a while.” “Waiting for this message. Check your phone” is another variant of the error. What Causes the “Waiting For This Messages” Error?
Several things can trigger this message.
If the sender force closes WhatsApp before the app encrypts the message, you may see this error message.
You may get this error if you (or the sender) are running outdated or different versions of WhatsApp.
Additionally, you may get this error if you or the sender recently changed phones or deleted and reinstalled WhatsApp.
Server downtime is another factor that could interrupt WhatsApp’s message encryption process. How to Fix “Waiting for This Message” on Android and iOS
There’s no way to “fix” this error message because there’s nothing broken on your phone or the sender’s phone. So it’s not an error per se. Instead, WhatsApp is telling you that there’s a temporary delay in encrypting or decrypting the message on either device.
We’ll show you four ways to expedite the end-to-end encryption so that you can view text hidden behind the “Waiting for this message” placeholder.1. Wait It Out
As mentioned earlier, WhatsApp may display this error if the sender force-closes WhatsApp. Therefore, you may have to wait until the person reopens WhatsApp on their device to view the hidden message. If it’s urgent, contact the sender via alternative methods—phone calls, SMS, iMessage, etc.—and ask them to open WhatsApp.2. Check WhatsApp Server Status
WhatsApp’s encryption engine may malfunction if some parts of the instant messenger’s server are experiencing an outage. If nothing changes while you wait, check the status of WhatsApp servers on site-monitoring platforms like DownDetector or IsItDownRightNow.
If these websites report a server downtime, you might have to wait a little longer until WhatsApp fixes the problem.3. Update WhatsApp
You may get this error message if you and the sender are using different versions of WhatsApp on your devices. It could also be due to a bug in the WhatsApp versions you’re both using.
Open your device’s app store and make sure you have the latest version of WhatsApp.
If you’re using an Android device, head to WhatsApp’s page on the Google Play Store and tap Update.
For iPhone users, search for WhatsApp on the App Store and tap Update on the app info page.
If you’re using the latest WhatsApp version and the problem persists, ask the sender to update WhatsApp on their device.4. Reinstall or Clear WhatsApp Data
If you’re getting this error on different texts in multiple conversations, there’s likely a problem with WhatsApp on your device. Before reinstalling WhatsApp, however, make sure you and the sender are running the latest version of WhatsApp.
Deleting WhatsApp or uninstalling the app will clear the app’s data—chats and media files. Hence, make sure you back up WhatsApp data to Google Drive or iCloud before deleting the app.Clear WhatsApp Data on iOS
After backing up your chats, press and hold the WhatsApp icon on your iPhone’s Home Screen and tap Remove App. Tap Delete App on the confirmation prompt to proceed.
Alternatively, press and hold WhatsApp in the App Library, tap Delete App, and tap Delete on the prompt.
Wait for a minute and reinstall WhatsApp from the App Store. Tap this link or open the App Store, search for WhatsApp and redownload the app.Clear WhatsApp Data on Android
On Android phones, you can clear WhatsApp data from the Settings menu instead of uninstalling the app.
Long-press the WhatsApp icon and tap the info icon.
Select Storage & cache.
Tap the Clear Storage icon and select OK on the confirmation prompt.
That will unlink your WhatsApp account from the app and remove all your conversations. Next, reopen WhatsApp, add and verify your phone number, and restore your chat backup. Afterward, check if you can view the text hidden behind the “Waiting for this message.” placeholder.Contact WhatsApp Support
