Illustration by Wesley Bedrosian for Forbes

In 1998, the year after taking Amazon public, Bezos debuted at No. 102, with a $1.6 billion fortune. It took him another two decades to unseat Microsoft’s Bill Gates (No. 3 on this year’s list, worth $106 billion) for the top spot in 2023.

Musk made his first Forbes 400 appearance in 2012 at No. 190, two years after Tesla’s IPO, with a net worth of $2.4 billion. Before that, the summit was firmly held by Gates, who ranked No. 1 for a quarter century, ceding the spot only once during that stretch (to Warren Buffett in 1993).

Gates became the richest person in America in 1992, when he overtook John Kluge (d. 2010), who readers may or may not remember as the man who built and sold his Metromedia TV empire to WorldCom.

Warren Buffett, MacKenzie Scott, Elon Musk. Illustrations by Wesley Bedrosian for Forbes.

None can match Musk’s ability to create headlines, rising to the top after a year of professional and personal chaos.

In the past year he has topped $300 billion twice, the first as Tesla shares peaked at $409.97 on November 4, 2023 when car rental giant Hertz announced it was buying 100,000 of its vehicles for a reported $4.2 billion. He became the first person to ever cross the $300 billion mark.

Two days later, Musk, who’d previously sold the electric vehicle maker’s shares on only two occasions in 2010 and 2024, began unloading $16 billion worth over two months, after first seeking approval of the move in a Twitter poll.

Then came a bombshell: On April 25, Musk signed a deal to buy Twitter for $54.20 per share (a reference to marijuana-themed holiday 4/20) and unloaded $8.5 billion of Tesla stock over the next three days. In early August, after equity markets began falling and Musk attempted to squash the deal, he dumped another $6.9 billion of Tesla shares over four days. The two sides are headed to court in October. Tesla shares closed at $270.21 on September 2, down 20% since he dropped the Twitter news.

It was no less tumultuous at home. In November, Musk, then a father of 8 with two different women, added two more to the brood when he secretly fathered twins with an executive of his brain implant startup, Neuralink, igniting a flurry of attention to his well-documented fear of population collapse.

In January Google cofounder Sergey Brin filed to divorce his second wife as rumors of a brief affair with Musk at Miami’s Art Basel festival circulated. Brin remained silent about the split, but his estranged wife denied the allegations, as did Musk, who shared selfies of him and the tech billionaire. In May, Business Insider accused Musk of sexually harassing a SpaceX flight attendant, a story he also denied and dismissed as a “politically motivated hit piece.” Then his 18-year-old child, from the first of his two marriages that ended in divorce, was granted a name and gender change and said she no longer wanted to associate with her father.

Somehow, the end result of all that: When Forbes measured net worths for the 2023 Forbes 400, Tesla shares were 11% higher than they were for the 2023 list, due in large part to the record revenue and profit the company reported for the first quarter of 2023.

In a note at the time, Wedbush analysts applauded the company’s “‘Cinderella-like’ delivery numbers in a brutal supply chain backdrop”, while cautioning that concerns about supply chain and production issues lingered, particularly in China, which they described as “the elephant in the room.” That elephant has continued to rear its head, with Tesla deliveries falling for the first time in two years during the second quarter, delaying Musk’s receipt of the last tranche of his lucrative 2023 performance-based stock option award.

But Musk can afford to wait. After all, he just unlocked three of those tranches on April 20, his favourite day of the year, giving him shares worth $18.7 billion as of September 2.

Musk, it seems, isn’t letting go of the gold medal anytime soon.

The Honda E Prototype Is Even Cuter In Person

The Honda e Prototype is even cuter in person

I knew the Honda e Prototype was going to be charming, but nothing quite prepared me for just how adorable the all-electric city car concept turned out to be. Making its debut at the Geneva Motor Show 2023 this week, this is the latest iteration – and the cutest – of an idea Honda has shown in a number of forms so far.

It’s the automaker’s vision of what an urban EV might look like, and how it could be packaged. That’s not a new segment, but it’s one which has arguably suffered from a few shortcomings with the current crop of electric vehicles populating it.

Lackluster styling, underwhelming range, and a cabin that feels a little too basic are all common issues in the category. They’re three things that Honda has addressed head-on with the e Prototype. Saying that, we’ll have to wait until closer to the end of the year to find out whether the promised production version keeps its end of the bargain up.

For now, we have the show car. It’s cute as a button, the compact platform making the most of its interior space by pushing the wheels out to the corners. The rear doors are practically hidden, giving the e Prototype the look of a three-door hatchback at first glance. That’s a nice balance of style and practicality.

At the front, the eager fascia shows that there’s still a place for anthropomorphizing cars. The cheeky fascia is actually a light-catching array of concave and convex shapes, with the illuminated Honda badge between eye-like headlamps. Honda has put the charging port in the middle of the hood, so that it’s easily reached regardless of the side of the charger you park on.

I’m a big fan of the e Prototype’s ceramic-like white paintwork, which contrasts nicely with the glossy black elements. The side mirror cameras and pop-out door handles are unlikely to make it through to the production car, I suspect, however. At the rear, the front fascia is echoed with another concave gloss black panel and inset ring taillamps.

Sadly Honda isn’t allowing people inside the concept car, or even to open the doors. It’s a shame, because the interior is one of the best parts from what I can see. An expansive array of displays spans the dashboard, showing a new and updated version of Honda’s infotainment system. It looks much cleaner and more intuitive than what’s in the automaker’s current cars.

The rest of the cabin is an array of clean materials and surfaces, with a sense of restraint and style that’s often missing from small cars in this segment. How much of that can be preserved while also delivering an affordable EV remains to be seen, of course, but I’m hopeful Honda will bear in mind that just because people aren’t buying large electric cars, that doesn’t mean they’re uninterested in styling – or that they want the “bulbous spaceship” aesthetic that so many EV-makers seem to be obsessed with.

As for the electric drivetrain, Honda is only giving us the basics for now. Range is expected to come in at around 124 miles, with the electric motor driving the rear wheels. Fast charger support should mean a 0-80 percent top-up in around 30 minutes. Not something you’re going to want to take on a road-trip, no, but likely more than enough for the urban environments Honda has in mind. I can’t wait to see the production EV it turns into.

Daily Authority: 💻 Made In America

The big American push for homemade chips

Robert Triggs / Android Authority

The United States is on a mission to strengthen local semiconductor manufacturing amidst rising tensions with Beijing. Earlier this year, President Joe Biden signed the $280 billion CHIPS and Science Act, with $52 billion squared away to boost domestic chip production in the country. It’s an ongoing effort to circumvent China’s technological dominance amid the global chip shortage. Yesterday marked a very important step towards the US realizing its chip manufacturing goals.

TSMC, the world’s largest contract chip maker, hosted a tool-in ceremony for its first factory in Phoenix, Arizona, on December 6. The event was attended by President Biden and Apple CEO Tim Cook.

The sprawling facility is currently being fitted with production equipment and hopes to start churning out chips in the US by 2024.

Apple has already committed to sourcing iPhone and MacBook chips from TSMC’s US factory. The company currently relies on chips produced overseas. “Now we’re going to do more of their supply chain here at home,” said Mr. Biden.

Apple will first buy iPhone 14 Pro processors from TSMC. AMD and NVIDIA will also put in orders with the facility.

What the future holds

It’s clear that the Biden administration doesn’t want US tech companies to source chips and other components from China.

Apple was recently warned against sourcing iPhone 14 memory chips from a controversial Chinese semiconductor manufacturer.

US lawmakers also want to make it harder for China to secure cutting-edge technology from US companies.

HUAWEI is a prime example of how the country is putting that into practice. NVIDIA was also recently told it would need special licenses to sell AI processors to Chinese companies.

This is why the Arizona TSMC factory is a feather in the cap for the US, something that signifies the country’s ambitious plans to become a tech superpower.

More chip production in the US

Once both factories are fully functional, TSMC’s total output in Arizona will be 60,000 wafers per month, triple its original plan of 20,000.

Besides TSMC, other chip makers are also betting big on US manufacturing.

Intel is pumping in $20 billion to expand its Chandler manufacturing site, which will be operational in 2024.

Intel is also building what it calls the world’s largest silicon manufacturing site in Ohio.

Memory and storage chip maker Micron will be spending $100 billion to set up a “megafab” in New York.

Samsung is also investing $17 billion to ramp up chip production in Texas.

A new study has revealed how the color of a bowl can impact the taste of the food it holds.

47 volunteers were split into two groups based on their responses to a food-pickiness questionnaire.

Food was then served to the two groups in red, blue, or white bowls.

While the color of the containers made no difference in perceived taste for non-picky eaters, the picky eaters reported changes in their taste based on the color of the bowl.

Samples of salt and vinegar-flavored potato chips were also given to all of the participants to eat from the differently colored bowls.

Volunteers were asked to rank them based on their desirability, saltiness, and flavor intensity.

While the bowl color didn’t seem to have any influence on flavor intensity, there were differences in the other two categories for picky eaters.

So weird, but I’m definitely trying this with my kid today!

Gas Stoves Could Be Making Thousands Of Children In America Sick

Gas stoves have been used to cook food in American homes since the 1800s, so they are nothing new. An estimated 40 million homes still use them over a century past their introduction. However, scrutiny over the popular appliances for their environmental and health impacts has been steadily building over decades.

A new study published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health in December 2023 finds that 12.7 percent of cases of childhood asthma in the United States could be due to gas stoves in the home. The researchers from the US and Australia estimate 650,000 people under 18 could be affected. Gas stoves can produce and emit dangerous levels of carbon monoxide, methane, benzene, and nitrogen dioxide, especially if they are used in poorly ventilated spaces and aren’t properly maintained. According to a study published in January 2023, they can leak methane (a planet-warming gas) even when they are turned off.

[Related: Your gas stove could be hurting everyone around you.]

Brady Seals, manager of the carbon free buildings program at RMI and a co-author of the study, told The Guardian that the prevalence of asthma due to gas stoves is similar to the amount of asthma caused by secondhand smoke. She called these findings “eye popping,” adding, “We knew this was a problem but we didn’t know how bad. This study shows that if we got rid of gas stoves we would prevent 12.7 percent of childhood asthma cases, which I think most people would want to do.”

The study used 2023 US Census data to determine the proportion of children exposed to pollution from gas stoves, borrowing this method from a 2023 analysis that found that gas cooking ranges in Australia could be attributable for 12.3 percent of childhood asthma cases. The team also used data from an analysis in 2013 that found children in homes with gas stoves were 42 percent more likely to have asthmatic symptoms.

“It’s like having car exhaust in a home,” Seals told The Washington Post. “And we know that children are some of the people spending the most time at home, along with the elderly.”

With this analysis, the authors do mention that their findings are based on multiple assumptions, so there is a possibility that the dangers might be either understated or overstated and that principal axis factoring (PAF) analysis does have limitations.

[Related: Gas stoves are bad for the environment—but what if the power goes out?]

Industry lobbyists and Republican led legislatures have also pushed back hard against plans to phase out the use of gas stoves. Some states and cities like New York have banned the use of gas hookups in new buildings, while others have prevented these changes.

In December 2023, US Consumer Product Safety Commission head Richard Trumka announced that the agency will put out a formal request for information on hazards associated with gas stoves and possible solutions by March.

“We need to be talking about regulating gas stoves, whether that’s drastically improving emissions or banning gas stoves entirely,” Trumka said. “And I think we ought to keep that possibility of a ban in mind, because it’s a powerful tool in our tool belt and it’s a real possibility here.”

The move aligns with efforts to help lower income households and those who rent replace gas stoves. The Inflation Reduction Act of 2023 does include a rebate of up to $840 for the purchase of new electric induction cooking appliances.

10 Best Office Chairs For Tall Person 2023

One thing that always bugs tall people about Office Chairs is comfort; without one, you are less likely to find optimal productivity.

Best Office Chairs for a tall person should possess more significant than average seat height, depth, and width with optimal backrest designed for ergonomics to support taller, heavier body build.

Read more to find out where you can find some of the best Office Chairs for tall people.

What to Look for in Office Chair for Tall Person?

As a tall person, you must have complained about your Office Chair not being ideal for your towering height.

Most workers complain about their Office Chairs not being ideal for their height, significantly affecting their body posture, comfort, and productivity.

According to a survey, the average height for men in North America is 5’9″ (175cm). However, only 14.5% of all men and 1% of women are six feet (178cm) or above.

Most Office Chair manufacturers fail to consider this meager percentile, creating a height-inappropriate Chair for taller people.

One of the most significant drawbacks of using a height-inappropriate Office Chair is back pain, bad posture, fatigue, and head or neck pain.

Consider your Chair height is ideal when your forearms lie at the same height as your desk, and elbows remain at 90 to 110 degrees open-angle with feet fully touching the floor and knees bent at 90 degrees.

Remember, a Chair is primarily designed with three factors: seat height, depth, and width.

1. Seat Height

If the seat height is too tall, you will need to extend your legs, and the short size will put your knee in an awkward posture.

You can tell the seat height is appropriate if your feet touch the floor while fully seated.

Here is a small chart describing the ideal seat height for different tall user heights.

User heightSeat height

Find out what is the appropriate Office Chair height.

2. Seat Depth

The proper seat depth will provide pelvic stability and posterity support to prevent the pelvis from tilting backward because the taller person has longer femur bones that require greater seat depth.

The ideal seat depth for a short person about 5’4″ is 21″ at most, while a taller person about 5’10” or above should be 23″-25″.

You can tell this by checking whether your buttock to the end of the inner thigh stays on the Chair while the knee bends at 90 degrees when fully seated.

Read on to learn more about the forward tilt and synchro tilt mechanisms of the Office Chair.

3. Seat Width

Remember, incorrect seat width will encourage you to shuffle your pelvis or limit your body movement entirely.

Too narrow seat width will constrict your torso, and too wide will lean your pelvis sideways.

Aim for a seat width of 19-20″ if your height is six feet or above and your weight exceeds 200 lbs.

4. Backrest, Lumbar Support, and Headrest

To ensure a comfortable sitting, you should always look into backrest height, lumbar support, and headrest.

The backrest should be high enough (12″-16″) to rest your upper body and boast an inward curve to provide lumbar support for natural upper-body posture.

Alternatively, you can place a pillow or choose Chairs with lumbar cushions to support the natural lower-body curve.

Although optional, a headrest can be beneficial to position your neck and head from leaning backward.

Find out how to add a headrest to your Office Chair.
