The importance of CES and what to expect in 2011
Next week, over 110,000 people from all over the world will head to Las Vegas for the annual Consumer Electronics show, (CES) the largest gadget show in the US. I attended my first CES in 1976 and in those days, this show had everything from watches to refrigerators on display besides TVs, stereos and car audio systems.
Over the years this show has evolved dramatically. For about a 20 year period they even had two shows a year, including a summer show in Chicago that had a heavy focus on digital gaming systems.
But, during the heyday of the PC, and especially when PCs took aim at consumers, CES started to decline, the Chicago show was cancelled and the January show’s crowds went down. But as the PC industry changed and consumers showed strong demand, and its big show Comdex bit the dust, CES became the only serious place for vendors to show their wares. By 2002, consumer-based PCs became a real interest to CE retail buyers and industry folks.
At its height, CES drew over 140,000 to the show in January of 2008, but then the recession hit later that year and the next two shows barely hit 110,000 attendees. But even with the decline in crowds, CES still remains the most important consumer-focused gadget show in the world and has become a key place for companies to show off their new products for the coming year.
Interestingly, the timing of the show is actually problematic for a lot of vendors. In the early days of CES, the lead time for showing off a product behind the scenes and actually getting it to market was 9-12 months. So showing products in January that would be available for the holiday season made sense. This way the buyers could put their holiday orders in place at the CES show and expect them in time for the Christmas buying season. But now the cycle for showing a product to getting it to market, because of competition, has decreased dramatically and products shown at CES are now expected to be in the market no later then Q2. That means any products that will hit the market for the holidays are only shown in back room meetings now.
Another thing to keep in mind about the show is that it is sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association. That means that this is an industry show whose sole purpose is to promote the consumer electronics industry and its members. And its HQ is based in Washington, DC so it is also a lobbying group for the interests of this industry. For example, CEA was a major champion of the analog to digital conversion, since it meant that the industry would benefit greatly because of this transition and now be able to sell millions of new digital TVs to consumers.
The hottest product this year will be tablets. We have counted at least 47 new tablets that will be introduced at CES next week. Of course, most of these will be not be from name-brand vendors and all aim to ride Apple’s iPad coattails into what is perceived to be a hot market for tablets in 2011. But some of the big players, such as Dell, RIM, Motorola, HTC and Microsoft and some of their partners will use this show to place a stake in the ground in this tablet space. And there will be extra interest in Motorola’s tablet since they have sent to the media a teaser suggesting they will have the first tablets based on Android’s Honeycomb OS, which is a version of Android optimized for tablets. Also, we believe Motorola has another product they will show off that could be groundbreaking so keep an eye on anything Motorola says, as this struggling tech giant seems to have found new life and could be one of the most powerful players in smartphones and tablets next year.
Last year’s darling of CES, eBook readers, will also be there in large numbers and in much improved designs and formats. In fact, the NOOKcolor is perhaps the most important of the recent devices since it is really a mini-tablet disguised as an eReader. Current eReaders, like Amazon’s Kindle, will still have a place in the market but I think that the NOOKcolor represents the real future of eBooks.
Since I have been to all but three CES shows since 1976, I have had a chance to see this show develop, grow and change over this time period. While its core products will still be TVs, stereos, audio and mainstream CE products, its focus on mobile computing and communications is starting to make it a most important place for anyone in the mobile space to show off their newest products. It is true that CTIA and the Mobile World Congress will still be the shows most focused on smartphones as mobile computing platforms. However, CES is starting to come into its own as a significant mobile showcase, and if it continues to make mobile products of all types a major focus, its importance as a mobile show will only grow.

Henry Ford may famously be thought to have said, “Any customer can have a car painted any colour that he wants so long as it is black,” as he invented mass production, but now it looks like the veteran auto company has an iPhone fixation, revealing support for the Apple device in future generations of its vehicles running the Ford Sync AppLink platform.
Some may note my determination that Apple has a story to tell in the automobile industry — perhaps partnerships will make this story thrive. So, what will this mean?
Simply put: plug your iPhone into your car and control your iPhone and its apps with your voice. Respond to texts, listen to Pandora, and more. In future I can imagine Apple’s gentle move to offer turn-by-turn based driving instructions.
The first SYNC-enabled apps to market are Pandora internet radio, Stitcher news radio and OpenBeak for listening to Twitter posts. Once the AppLink upload is complete, customers can then visit their phones’ respective app store to download the latest SYNC-enabled Pandora, Stitcher or OpenBeak app to their smartphone as they would any other app.
Ford Sync AppLink already works with BlackBerry and Android: iPhone support’s on the way in 2011.

SYNC APPLINK NOW AVAILABLE AS FREE DOWNLOAD; FORD FIESTA OWNERS FIRST WITH VOICE CONTROL OF APPS
· Ford announces that Apple iPhone will be compatible with AppLink, along with initially announced BlackBerry by RIM and Android-based smartphones
· Pandora internet radio, Stitcher news radio and OpenBeak are the first SYNC-enabled mobile apps, some of which can be downloaded today from Android Market and BlackBerry App World, and soon from Apple App Store
· SYNC AppLink comes first to 2011 Ford Fiesta owners, with more SYNC-equipped vehicles soon to follow
DEARBORN, Mich., Dec. 22, 2010 – More than 14,000 owners of SYNC®-equipped Ford Fiesta vehicles can start celebrating the holidays now by treating themselves to the gift of AppLink, a free software program that gives SYNC users voice control of apps stored on their smartphone.
“More and more drivers are using their devices and their apps while in the car,” said Doug VanDagens, director of Ford Connected Services. “With AppLink, SYNC is a smarter solution for these drivers who choose to use these apps while driving – making it the only connectivity system available that can extend app functionality to the car using both voice and steering wheel controls.”
Ford is also announcing a surprise new member to the AppLink family: the Apple iPhone. The popular smartphone makes for a powerful addition, and will be joining Android and BlackBerry smartphones as compatible devices with the software that allows apps to be controlled through the SYNC voice recognition system – a smarter alternative to manually controlling apps while driving.
Recent studies indicate 46 percent of adult smartphone users have apps on their phones and 36 percent of those admit to using those apps while commuting. Moreover, the 2010 study “Staying Connected on the Go: A Look at In-Vehicle Smartphone Integration Systems” conducted by the Consumer Electronics Association reports that 55 percent of smartphone owners prefer voice commands as their user interface for in-car smartphone integration, making the business case for SYNC and AppLink even more compelling.
“SYNC and AppLink work hand-in-hand to answer consumer demand for safer, smarter control of smartphones while in the car,” said VanDagens. “Ford has worked hard to be a step ahead or at least in step with the speed of the consumer electronics market, and to leverage the technologies, features and services we know our customers want to be connected to while driving.”
2011 SYNC-equipped Ford Fiesta owners need to log in to their account on chúng tôi to access the free AppLink download in the Update & Customize section.
As with any typical download, the AppLink software can be stored on a USB memory stick, and then inserted and uploaded to the vehicle via the SYNC system’s USB port. In-car installation takes less than 10 minutes.
Current availability of SYNC-enabled apps:
– BlackBerry: Available now (Version 1.1.6 or higher)
– BlackBerry: Coming late 2011
AppLink makes the connection between app and SYNC fairly seamless and simple, using Bluetooth streaming on paired Android and BlackBerry smartphones and the USB port for a connected Apple iPhone.
To access a mobile app with a SYNC-paired phone, the user simply has to press the VOICE button on the steering wheel and say the command, “Mobile applications,” followed by the name of the app he or she would like to launch.
“Where before users would pick up their phone, taking their eyes off the road and hands off the steering wheel while driving to select a station and hit play, AppLink makes all of that functionality available through voice control, just like managing AM and FM radio or your MP3 player through SYNC,” said Julius Marchwicki, SYNC product manager.
Similar voice command pathways and functionality exist for the Stitcher and OpenBeak apps. With Stitcher, for example, you can say the command, “Play station news” to listen to your favorite news radio or “Play station sports” to hear on-demand sports programming. Other popular Stitcher features such as skip station, thumbs up/down and “Add to favorites” are also available via voice.
Through the OpenBeak app, drivers can simply say the SYNC command, “Read timeline.” In seconds, their feed is read aloud using the SYNC text-to-speech engine – a very similar experience to listening to talk radio.
Additional SYNC-enabled apps and smartphone integrations are coming soon, said Marchwicki. AppLink will also be introduced on other SYNC-equipped new model vehicles in 2011.
Ford will feature demos of AppLink at the Pepcom Digital Experience media event in Las Vegas on Jan. 5, 2011, and then at the 2011 International CES consumer technology trade show in Las Vegas between Jan. 6 and Jan. 9, 2011.

Your website should be designed keeping in mind your audience and should ensure that it improves user experience.
Your website should be designed keeping in mind your audience and should ensure that it provides good user experience. There are a lot of other benefits of a good website design for both your business and your audience.
In this post, we will discuss why good website design is important from your audience’s perspective.Brand image
Your website is a reflection of your brand and everything that it stands for. It is usually one of the first things people look at to get to know a brand and therefore helps form the first impression.
Your website design elements, like colours, fonts, images, etc. all form your brand identity. Therefore, you need to select those elements carefully and keep them consistent across your website.
Look at the screenshot of Coca Cola’s homepage, for example.
See how the brand has used the company’s distinctive red colour on a white background. Red and white are the colours of the company’s logo, packaging of their traditional coke bottles, and a lot of other brand elements. It maintains this consistency because these two distinctive colours represent the brand and people associate these with the company.
Here are some of the web design elements that you should select carefully and then use consistently.Colour
If you already have some brand colours that align with your logo and other brand identity elements, then you should use those on your website as well. However, if you’re starting from scratch, then you can use this study to understand colour associations.
For example, if you want to associate your brand with trust, then you should use the colour blue. And, if you want consumers to think that your brand produces high-quality products, then the colour black can help you form that image. Similarly, depending on what brand associations you want to form, you can select your brand colours.
You can then select colours that evoke certain emotions or thoughts in people. For example, blue is the colour most associated with trust and black with quality.Layout
As a rule of thumb, keep your layout simple, clean, and designed in a way that draws attention to the most important parts.
Also, the number of menu options or the elements in a drop-down menu should be determined based on your audience preferences. You can experiment with a few different layouts and conduct split testing to understand what works best with your audience.
One of the best examples of cluttered website design and how it affects usability is shown below. The website is very difficult to navigate and the lack of a grid design makes it messy and chaotic.
Now, let’s compare it with another website with a cleaner layout to see how it could have been structured instead. This website also focuses on the products and services but has organized the various web elements well. The use of a grid format further adds structure to the page.Fonts and typography
The general rule for selecting a font is that it should be easy-to-read and clearly visible on the background colour that you selected.
The actual selection, however, should depend on your audience. Younger people, for example, often prefer more fun and stylish fonts. Older people might prefer clean and simple ones that are easier to read.
Your font should also reflect your brand personality and whether you want to look professional or fun and youthful.
Here’s an example of a brand that does this well by their use of a creative font to reflect their own creativity.Website accessibility
You should design your website in a way that makes it accessible to all. It will not only make the experience better for your audience but is also required by law. This means designing your website so that people with disabilities can also access it.
This is, however, easier said than done. Most website designers and agencies are not even aware of this, let alone able to design an accessible website.
So, whether you build your website yourself or use a web design agency, make sure that you design an accessible website. While this can be extremely challenging, you can make the most of solutions like accessiBe to simplify the whole process. The company provides you with a code, which you can install so your website will instantly display an accessible interface.
The accessiBe AI also scans and analyzes your website to ensure that it complies with all accessibility-related laws (ADA, WCAG, Section 508) in just 48 hours. This will help you avoid any accessibility-related lawsuits, (yes that’s a thing), and include a larger number of people in your audience.

This guide reveals examples of poor website design from different sectors which are commonly seen, but best avoided.
Access theSite navigation
One of the biggest benefits of a good website design for your audience is that it can help them navigate the site easily.
The ultimate goal of anyone visiting your website is to quickly find the information that they are looking for. And, your website design should make that process easier and help visitors navigate your website without getting lost.
The more user-friendly your website is, the more likely it is that people will engage with your content and take the desired action. A good website design should aim to provide the best user experience, which ultimately translates into conversions.
Airbnb, for example, has a very simple, yet engaging website design where you can find everything right from the homepage. Whether you want to make a booking or explore the different types of accommodations and experiences provided by Airbnb, you will find an option on the homepage.
As you scroll down the page, you will find more options to explore. From top-rated Airbnb stays to travel recommendations, you have it all.
So, if you know where you want to go, you can simply make a booking from the top of the page. If you’re just exploring your options, you can simply browse through and get inspiration for your next trip.
See how brilliant that strategy is? Airbnb does not just make it easy for people to book stays but also encourages them to plan a trip if they’re not yet sure.
And, all of that can be done right from the homepage. No messy drop-down menus, no page hierarchies, just a clean and simple all-you-need-to-know-you-find-it-here kind of design. Conclusion
But, more importantly, it provides good user experience and helps your website visitors access and navigate your website with ease.
So, if you are looking for designers to create your website, vet them well and ensure that they are capable of designing user-friendly and accessible websites.
If you already have a website, you can always conduct a site audit and optimize it to provide a better user experience and to improve accessibility.

It looks like Apple’s event tomorrow will focus on new iPad models as rumored, but there are bound to be a lot of announcements beyond just the new iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3. Below we’ve put together some of our expectations for other possibilities at the event, including likely announcements for new Macs, software updates and a couple of possible surprises you might not be expecting.
iPad Air 2 & iPad mini 3: The majority of rumors leading up to tomorrow’s event have been focused on a second-generation iPad Air. It’s now all but confirmed with our discovery earlier today of iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 images in an iOS 8.1 iPad user guide. The guide confirmed nearly identical designs to previous generations as well as Touch ID and the Burst camera mode previously only available on iPhones.
Based on our own reports and several leaks in recent months, we’re expecting the new iPad Air 2 will gain a slightly thinner design, a more efficient A8 processor, the M8 chip and Touch ID from iPhone 6, and other improved camera and display components. Rumor has it that the new Air will be offered in a gold color option previously only available on iPhones. The refreshed iPad mini 3, on the other hand, will reportedly be more of a minor spec bump but include Touch ID.
A Keyboard Smartcover would also be nice. We’ve certainly seen a lot of patent work in that area, but alas it is probably one of those products that Apple reveals across all of 2023. Earlier today Google announced its HTC-made Nexus 9 tablet which works with a magnetic folio-style keyboard case, and Microsoft’s Surface has long enjoyed the benefit of the keyboard cover.
OS X Yosemite: As much as this event is being touted as Apple’s iPad event, we’re also expecting Apple to dedicate a lot of stage time to Mac and OS X Yosemite announcements. We reported as far back as July that Apple was planning a late October release of Yosemite, the latest version of its Mac operating system that has been in beta testing since its unveiling earlier in the year at WWDC. Tomorrow we’ll likely get specific launch dates for the public release if not a release tomorrow. If it is any indication, Yosemite Apps are hitting the store 24 hours early.
iWork/iLife/Final Cut: Not only will we get specifics on a release date, we might also hear about new features like the Photos app that Apple originally said would arrive early next year to replace Aperture and iPhoto. An update on iWork and iLife apps for OS X Yosemite and the new iCloud Drive service would also be good candidates for Apple’s Yosemite portion of its event tomorrow. We’ve already seen what may be the new icons for the apps. We reported in July that Apple was said to be preparing updates to both iMovie and Final Cut Pro to bring support for editing, exporting, and importing video taken with 4K resolution-capable cameras. That would be a great feature to introduce beside new higher-resolution desktops…
Retina iMac: The star of the show as far as Macs go tomorrow will likely be Apple’s 4K Retina iMac that we first reported back in July was in development. Our report was backed up by other reliable supply chain leaks pointing to a new higher-resolution 27-inch iMac with some claiming a 27-inch iMac with a resolution of 5120×2880 could launch by year’s end. There’s still a possibility the 21-inch model could get a mention alongside the introduction of the expected 27-inch Retina iMac tomorrow, but the latest from often reliable KGI says a 21-inch model won’t be released until early 2023.
12-inch MacBook: While Apple is indeed working on a 12-inch Retina Macbook, as we first reported back in July, at this point an appearance tomorrow is up in the air. We noted in earlier reports that the slimmer 12-inch MacBook could be pushed back into 2023 due to delays with Intel chips and yesterday analysts from the often reliable KGI reported the same. Earlier this month The Wall Street Journal reported that production of a 12-inch Retina MacBook wouldn’t start until December, another hint that it might not make an appearance tomorrow. A Retina iMac could certainly be enough to carry the show for the Mac/Yosemite portion of things, and an updated Mac mini is another possibility…
Apple already announced a number of banking and retail partners for the service. A recent leak from Walgreens pointed to an Oct. 18 launch date for the service, while banking partner USAA said it will begin supporting the service on Nov. 7. The later date could be part of Apple’s second wave of launch partners, as USAA is listed in the coming soon category on Apple’s site alongside PNC, Navy Federal Credit Union, Barclays, and USBank. Initial banking launch partners listed by Apple include Citi, Bank of America, Capital One, Wells Fargo, Chase, and American Express.
12-inch iPad: Another product rumored to be in Apple’s pipeline is a 12-inch iPad that some are referring to as the iPad Pro. It didn’t appear alongside the new iPad Air and iPad mini in the leaked iOS 8.1 guide today, and recent reports from Bloomberg claimed the 12.9-inch iPad won’t arrive until early next year.
Split-screen multitasking: We first reported that Apple was working on a split-screen multitasking mode for iPad back in May. While it seems like a perfect feature for a rumored 12.9-inch iPad, there’s certainly a possibility Apple could show off the feature tomorrow as a new standout feature for the iPad Air 2.
Mac mini: One last possibility for Apple’s event tomorrow is a refreshed Mac mini. We found references on Apple’s own website earlier this year, and later reports claimed a refreshed Mac mini would arrive this month. Previous rumors said the update would include Intel Iris graphics and 802.11ac wireless networking, although that was the same report that claimed the new machine would launch back in February. The current Mac mini that Apple is still selling was last updated in late 2012.
Retina Thunderbolt display: This might be my wishful thinking long shot, but if Apple is ready to start selling the Retina 4K resolution iMac as everyone is expecting, it wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine it has panels ready for a similar update to its aging Thunderbolt display. Many were disappointed that we didn’t get an updated Thunderbolt display alongside the introduction of the all-new Mac Pro last year, and the current Thunderbolt display hasn’t received a major upgrade since 2011. Apple last made silent minor tweaks to the Thunderbolt display in July 2012 but otherwise has remained the same since its introduction over 3 years ago.
Apple TV: While it’s also been ‘way too long’ since the last Apple TV update, the long-awaited Apple TV overhaul isn’t expected until early next year. The current generation Apple TV features the same single-core A5 chip as the iPhone 4s and current iPod touch, and while a minor revision was issued to this product, it dates back to the March 2012 iPad 3 event.
