What is SMS marketing?

SMS marketing is the practice of sending marketing messages by text message.

It’s a form of opt-in marketing that requires contacts to subscribe. This differentiates it from social marketing, where the marketer posts public content that people can choose to like or follow.

Consumers are becoming more and more comfortable interacting with businesses on their mobile devices. In many cases, they expect to be able to reach businesses by messaging or text.

So it’s no surprise that even back in January 2023, before COVID-19 upended the ways in which businesses interact with customers, more than half of U.S. retailers planned to increase their digital marketing investment in messaging and SMS.

By June 2023, that number had increased to 56%, outranking any other area for potential investment.

What is SMS customer service?

SMS customer service is the practice of serving customers through SMS messages, allowing them to “talk” to customer service agents via text.

Juniper Research found that global mobile business messaging increased by 10% in 2023, reaching 2.7 trillion messages. SMS accounted for 98% of that messaging traffic, and the retail sector accounted for 408 billion of those messages.

Juniper found that retailers primarily used messaging for:

order confirmations

dispatch notifications

tracking information

delivery updates

All of these functions fall under the larger umbrella of SMS customer service.

And Gartner predicts that by 2025, 80% of customer service organizations will be using SMS and messaging, rather than native apps.

Customers perceive these service SMS messages to be the most valuable ones sent by businesses. Appointment reminders, delivery updates, and booking confirmations all rank above product or service discounts in terms of perceived value.

That means if you’re planning to incorporate text message marketing, it’s a good idea to also include SMS customer service. Customers are more likely to stay subscribed to SMS messages when they see real value in the messages you send.

Of course, SMS customer service is not just about these automated confirmations or reminders. It also involves allowing customers to chat directly with customer service reps using one-to-one text messaging.

SMS marketing best practices

Don’t send without a clear opt-in

You probably already collect phone numbers from your customers. That does not mean you should start mass texting them. Much like email marketing, SMS text marketing requires a clear opt-in.

You can ask customers to opt in to text messages on your website or other online channels. But, before you start sending, you should get a text confirmation that they really do want to subscribe.

One way to do this is to send one SMS (and one only) thanking them for subscribing and asking them to confirm their opt-in with a simple Yes or No. If they don’t respond, don’t text them again. And, obviously, if they text No, don’t text them again either.

Include instructions to opt out

This is a best practice (and often a legal requirement) for all marketing communications. But it’s especially important for a more intrusive method like SMS. Repeatedly texting people who don’t want to hear from you is more likely to lose customers than lead to sales.

You should include unsubscribe information even for transactional messages like shipping updates or appointment reminders. Not everyone wants to get these kinds of details by text.

Since open rates for SMS messages are consistently much higher than those for email, your unsubscribe rates will be higher, too. Don’t panic if you see a spike in unsubscribes after a message goes out.

But do analyze your unsubscribe rates over time. Once you’ve fully implemented your SMS marketing program, you can establish an unsubscribe baseline. Check all future messages against that baseline, and look for any outlying results. If unsubscribes are unusually high or low, analyze the message to see if you can identify what led to the change in result.

Identify yourself

You can’t assume your customers have you in their SMS contacts. That means your message will appear from a number they don’t recognize, with no inherent identifying information. If you want them to get past the first couple of words, you need to identify yourself right away.

A simple way to do this is to put your brand name right at the start of the message, followed by a colon, like Victoria Emerson does here:

And here’s an example of what not to do. Yes, I can tell by the content of the message that it must have come from my cell service provider. But they never identify themselves, and the recipient shouldn’t have to play a guessing game.

Send at the right time

Choosing the best time is important for any marketing message. But for SMS, it’s critical. That’s because people are more likely to have alerts turned on for text. And while some people put their phones on Do Not Disturb at times they don’t want to be interrupted, you can’t count on this.

The last thing you want to do is wake your customer up in the middle of the night with a marketing offer. Your customers probably don’t want to receive messages that would interrupt their dinner, either.

The good news is that area codes make it relatively easy to identify your target audience’s time zones. Rather than sending a blast message to everyone at once, choose an appropriate time and send it out in stages by time zone.

Know your character count

SMS messages max out at 160 characters. That’s not a lot to work with when you’ve got to identify yourself and provide an opt-out option. You’ll need to know exactly what you want to say and not waste any characters.

Get to the point quickly, and use links (and link shorteners) to fill out the details of your message.

Most modern 4K TVs support native upscaling – automatically resizing HD and FHD quality content to suit the larger resolution. Non-4K content will generally look better on a 4K TV than a HD one – but not as good as properly mastered 4K content will.

It’s for this reason that most film distributors are currently re-releasing older films in 4K.

Where can I get 4K content?

Foxtel also has 4K channels, including a 4K Ultra HD movie channel and a 4K Ultra HD sports channel. To view the Foxtel 4K content, you’ll need a 4K TV, active Foxtel subscription and the company’s new iQ4 set top box.

Can I stream 4K content on a streaming service like Netflix?

Once again, you will need the correct hardware. As well as a 4K monitor, you will need a graphics card that can support 4K gameplay. The newer and more powerful your graphics card, the better.

Optimally, you will want to have an Nvidia RTX 30 Series or AMD Radeon RX6000 Series graphics card installed, since these are the newest and most optimised graphics cards for 4K gaming. However, you could also get away with an older graphics card as long as it isn’t too underpowered. We wouldn’t recommend anything older or less powerful than Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1080 Ti or RTX 2070 Ti, or AMD’s Radeon RX 5700 XT.

You’ll also want nothing less powerful than an Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 7 processor to make 4K gaming on your PC worthwhile.

When using the term “wireless charging,” it somehow seems like you will be able to charge your phone at any distance from the charging unit. It’s misleading but a necessary evil that provides a simpler terminology to understand. The reality is that “wireless charging” is actually magnetic induction charging.

Magnetic induction chargers, as the name implies, have a strong electromagnetic coil in the center that generates a field. The moment you place your device on a charging surface, the charger’s magnetic coil will turn on, and your device will charge by utilizing the magnetic field generated by it. The device’s end functions in reverse, taking the magnetic field and converting it into usable energy.

Please note that this is different from the magnetic charging cables found in some Mac models. These cables use magnets for attaching to their ports, but pass current from point A to point B through conduction, not induction.

How Fast Does Your Phone Charge?

The speed of a phone’s charging cycle depends entirely on amperage and voltage. If you multiply both, you end up with the effective wattage in power being transferred from the charger to the phone. A 12-volt charger delivering 500 milliamps of nominal current will charge at 6 watts of nominal power. Phone battery capacity is measured in milliamp-hours (mAh). On the other hand, the average charger will show you how much voltage in direct current (DC) it will deliver, and at what amperage it will deliver it.

Typical wall chargers will deliver 1 amp of nominal current at 5 volts of tension. This charges a 3,000 mAh battery in roughly 3.6 hours. Most wireless chargers will also follow this guideline (5 volts of tension), but will lower the amperage slightly (the highest I’ve seen is 0.65 amps). Expect your phone to take longer to charge in this instance. To get a feel for how long your phone will take to charge on a wireless charger, check its amperage and compare it to the 1-amp nominal current delivered by the typical wall charger.

You may have heard of cases in which people’s phones were hacked and information was stolen through the charger in a public place. A new concern is on the rise as more restaurants and other public venues are offering free wireless charging to individuals with smartphones. The answer (so far) is a resounding “no.” The reason why wired charging stations were able to steal information was because it relied on the phone’s USB port (all five wires). This allowed some charging stations to act as a computer that would interact with the phone. With wireless charging, the induction coils have only one purpose: Turn on the magnet so the phone can chug some juice.

Of course, that all may change if phone manufacturers decide to allow their devices to use wireless chargers as information exchange points. When that time comes, this will become a legitimate concern.

Today, Nothing announced the Nothing Ear (2), an updated in-ear wireless earbud that replaces the Ear (1), the firm’s first-ever product launched in 2023.

Here’s everything you need to know about the Nothing Ear (2).

When will the Nothing Ear (2) be released?

Nothing announced the Ear (2) on 22 March 2023, and the buds are available to buy now from Nothing’s website.

From 23 March you can get them from the Nothing Store in Soho, London, and also at Kith retail stores in the US, France, and Japan.

From 28 March Ear (2) will be on sale with other retailers including StockX in the US.

In the US and Europe this is the same price as the Nothing Ear (1) but in the UK the Ear (2) is £20 less than the older model.

The Ear (1) originally cost $99/£99/€99 but Nothing had to put the price up in October 2023.

$149/£129/€149 is still very competitive, undercutting Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 by $100/£120 – and the Ear (2) pack in many similar features.

The Nothing Ear (2) look very similar to the Ear (1), but the company has changed a few things.

It has kept the stemmed bud design popularised by AirPods but now the controls are even more similar to AirPods, and what we saw on the Ear (Stick), with pinch controls rather than the touch ones on Ear (1).

A beep test will then ask you if you can hear frequencies at different levels, creating what Nothing calls your Hearing ID.

The software in the Nothing X audio app will then use this (you can toggle it on or off) to adjust how audio sounds – hopefully better given it’s trained to your ears.

Dual Connection

For the first time, you can connect a Nothing earbud product to two audio sources simultaneously. It’s handy if you want to be connected to your phone and laptop at the same time and easily switch between the two for calls or video playback.

Clear Voice Technology

With three mics and an AI noise reduction algorithm, Nothing says the Ear (2) has the best audio on a Nothing earbud yet.

The mic positioning is designed to add more wind resistance and it is claimed the new buds have better Bluetooth connection thanks to a new antenna structure.

New custom driver

Ear (2) has a redesigned 11.6mm custom driver to deliver an updated sound. Nothing says low frequencies “go even deeper”. Up the bass.

Hi-Res Audio compatible

The Ear (2) are built to playback hi-res audio at frequencies up to 24 bit/192KHz using the LHDC 5.0 codec. This is different to the LDAC codec seen in other hi-res earbuds such as the Sony WF-100XM4.

Nothing says that when turned on, the mode should detect when the audio source is hi-res and playback accordingly. We’ll find out in our review soon.

Personalised ANC

With ANC, Nothing Ear (2) lets you pick between three levels or an Adaptive mode that takes in the ambient noise around you to choose how much sound it should let in or block out.

There’s also a now-familiar transparency mode that lets all sounds in so you can talk to others and hear sounds even with the silicon-tipped buds in your ears.

Battery life and water resistance

Nothing states with a fully charged set of buds and case you’ll get 36 hours of playback without ANC on. This breaks down to 6 hours of use without ANC on for the buds at a time. A fast charge can add eight hours of playback time from 10 minutes plugged in, allegedly.

The Ear (2) is IP54 rated for dust and water resistance, which equates to sweat from workouts, light rain, and not much else. Keep ‘em dry.
