Popular disappearing messages app Snapchat announced three new features. In the latest 9.15 update for iOS and coming soon to Android, Snapchat now offers users filters for their faces, “Lenses”, achievements dubbed “Trophies,” and, for the first time ever, in-app purchases in the form of “Extra Replays.” Here’s a round-down of all three.Lenses
Anyone who has used PhotoBooth on the Mac will feel right at home. Once Snapchat detects your face, users can access live filters that change as your face alters its position (as Albert Einstein and Michelle Obama have come to find out). The filters are pre-programmed animations that can change your face in amusing, and sometimes disturbing ways, like a funhouse mirror right on your phone. It takes Snapchat’s previous static filters — locations and events — to a whole new level, and is worlds beyond the simple drawing tools for which the app gained popularity.
To enable the new Snapchat filters for your face, head to the app’s main camera screen. With the selfie camera enabled, tap and hold on your face. After holding your face for little more than a second, a list of swipe-able options will appear over the virtual shutter button. Options for heart eyes, rainbow barf will now be available. This may take some doing to reveal the Lenses menu—we’ve yet to access it on our first try.
The feature requires Snapchat users to have the selfie (i.e.: front-facing) camera enabled and not the rear shooter. Unlike Snapchats previous filters, location sharing need not be turned on to use the feature.
Multiple replays mark the first instance of Snapchat in-app purchasesPay-To-Replay
Snapchat also added its first ever option for in-app purchases. For $1, users can get an extra three replays of a previously opened snap. While replay functionality has been built in to pictures since the beginning of photography, Spiegel and crew are cleverly offering additional paid replays as a way to break the first rule of Snapchat.
Snapchat users can also purchase 10 replays for $3 and 20 replays for $5. It doesn’t sound like much money, but with over 100 million daily active users, that could add up quickly, and the move toward monetization should ease some of the worries of Silicon Valley investors and reporters in the wake of a controversial leaked report earlier this year revealing Snapchat has been losing tens of millions of dollars.Trophies
Along with the first opportunity to hand over money to Snapchat are the ownership of bragging rights. A new Trophies section has made their way into users’ app updates. We saw this feature leak last week and now the Trophy Case has finally made its return.Miscellaneous Snapchat Update Changes
Small changes throughout the Snapchat app can be found as well. Tap on the screen when in camera mode, for example, and fluid new focus icon briefly appears. When viewing friends’ stories, the top right circle icon has been streamlined.
But most interestingly is Snapchat’s first attempt at asking its users for money. With Snapchat Discover, the company partnered with media outlets to share content within the app and Snapcash — created in partnership with mobile payments company Square — allowed users to trade cash with each other. Now that you can hand money over to Snapchat yourself, the company may be looking to increase that multi-billion dollar evaluation.

With so many of us tightening our budgets, expensive earbuds may seem frivolous. After all, cheap earbuds have improved over the past few years. Many earbuds that cost $50 or less boast pretty good sound quality and even offer features like water resistance and wireless charging. With all that cheap earbuds have to offer, is it even worth it to pay more for Sony, Samsung, or Apple’s flagships?
With concrete examples, we’ll break down the differences between cheap and expensive true wireless earbuds. In the end, you may find the price is just right between those two extremes.
Mid-tier noise-cancelling performance is all over the place. ANC on the Beats Studio Buds and Nothing Ear 1 does little to cancel out background noise. Then there are the Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 and Sony LinkBuds S that dampen background noise quite a bit. Sony’s own LinkBuds S actually has better ANC than the flagship WF-1000XM4 from 75-350Hz, so wind, engine rumbles, and A/C whirs will all sound a smidge quieter with the LinkBuds S than with the XM4. No matter what, though, the WF-1000XM4 block out more high frequencies like chatter, keyboard sounds, and clinking dishware.
Performance is consistently great when you get to high-end earbuds. Look at how the Google Pixel Buds Pro, Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro, Apple AirPods Pro 2, and Sony WF-1000XM4 compare above. The Galaxy Buds 2 Pro cancel out more super-low frequencies than any of the other earbuds, but the effect may not sound as pleasing as with the AirPods Pro (2nd generation) or the WF-1000XM4.
If you are on the lookout for great noise-cancelling earbuds, don’t cut corners. We recommend you put off your purchase and save for a few more weeks or months to experience great ANC. Your ears will thank you.
Custom EQ module and EQ presets: You can change the earbuds’ frequency response to your liking, or choose from a handful of premade profiles.
Personalized EQ with hearing test: Some apps prompt you to take a hearing test to optimize the frequency response to your hearing abilities.
Control customization: You can change the earbud commands to your liking.
Personalized spatial audio with head tracking: Listeners can personalize the spatial audio effect for a more immersive experience. Enabling head tracking sets your phone as an anchor point, and the audio changes as you move your head relative to your phone.
Ambient sound or transparency mode: These listening modes let you filter background noise through the earbuds.
Location-based sound modes: When you enter or leave a certain location, the sound changes to a predetermined setting that you created.
Automatic ear detection: When you remove the buds, your media pauses. Inserting the earbuds resumes playback.
Ear tip fit test: The app will run a test emitting noises through the earbuds to determine if you’re using the best size ear tips for your ears.
Bluetooth codec options: You can toggle between the earbuds’ Bluetooth codecs.
Bluetooth multipoint: The earbuds can connect to two devices simultaneously. This is good for productivity when you want to watch a YouTube video but keep an ear on your phone for incoming calls.
Ongoing firmware updates: All apps offer access to firmware updates to keep the earbuds competitive and to fix bugs.
While none of these features are necessary for connecting your earbuds to your Android phone or iPhone and listening to music, they sure enhance the experience. You’ll have a hard time finding any earbuds with an original retail price of $50 or less that come with an app at all.
Instead, the appeal of cheap earbuds is that what you buy is what you get. However, simplicity has its downsides. App-less earbuds can’t receive updates to improve the product throughout its lifetime. Most earbud manufacturers start offering apps at around the $100 mark, which is a reasonable price for access to a few or all of these features.
What to watch out for before buying expensive earbuds

While expensive earbuds have plenty to offer, wireless earbuds don’t last very long. With regular use, you’re lucky to get more than a couple of years out of them. That’s right, you could spend well over $200 on earbuds that can’t hold a charge after two or three years. How does this battery degradation happen? Simply put, we subject earbuds to an unending charge/recharge cycle. This puts a lot of stress on the tiny lithium-ion batteries, hastening battery breakdown.
Most wireless earbuds won’t survive more than two years of daily use.
If you don’t want to buy a pair of earbuds every two years, we recommend buying wired earbuds. The KZ ZSN Pro X ($23 at Amazon) and Tin Audio T2 HiFi ($49 at Amazon) fit the bill as great wired earbuds. Alternatively, wired headphone batteries last much longer than those in earbuds because they’re bigger and aren’t always recharging. The Anker Soundcore Life Q35 don’t cost too much ($99 at Amazon). Listeners who are ready to go big can grab the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones for $398 at Amazon.
Those who insist on wireless earbuds may find purchasing mid-tier earphones is an easier financial pill to swallow. These usually fall between $75 and $160. Spending this much opens the door for app support, with a feature set near or identical to a brand’s flagship option.
Adobe last night updated its Photoshop Lightroom photo manipulation and organization Mac application to 4.3, which includes support for Retina display, a ton of bugfixes (documented below), and support for new cameras. A beta with partial Retina support was released last month.

Uploading large panorama images to Revel cased Lightroom to crash.
The “Unused” filter was not properly filtering images within the Book Module.
Lightroom hangs while changing the Exposure adjustment by typing in a numeric adjustment. Please note that this only occurs when the Enter key is not typed to confirm the adjustment and another Develop adjustment is tried. Also please note that this only occurs on Windows.
After creating a new folder in Lightroom, attempting to undo that folder can sometimes cause a corrupt catalog.
An image can be simultaneously flagged as both a Pick and Reject at the same time.
Using multiple colors within a single text cell within the Book Module can cause Lightroom to crash.
The active Develop slider, the one controlled with + and – keys, defaults to Exposure when moving from one photo to another.
Catalogs from Photoshop Elements 11 would not update in Lightroom.
Site titles longer than 70 characters created in the Web Module can cause Lightroom to freeze.
Cell padding linking lost between sessions.
Deleting the top image in a stack causes the entire stack to disappear.
Tethered capture fails when turning camera off and back on. This also can occur if the camera goes to sleep and then wakes. This occurs only with Canon cameras and on Mac only.
Cropping an image to a small size sometimes causes the image in Develop to become blurry.
AVCHD video formats are not properly importing into Lightroom. Please note that this only occurred on Mac.
Enable Profile Corrections does not auto find iPhone 4 profile.
Crop doesn’t update in second monitor if navigator panel closed. Please note that this only occurred on Mac.
TIFF files can experience tonal shifts within Lightroom.

So why are there so many sites that still aren’t buying in?
Maybe the idea of creating a library or searchable database is too daunting? Maybe in-depth research coupled with the time and effort required to create and market great content just seems like too much work. But unless a site features a billion-dollar brand name, funny pictures of cats or the contents of Lindsey’s Lohan’s trash, people probably aren’t throwing links at it. So what’s a small commercial site to do?
I say, grab a dust rag, head into the basement and see what you already have that, with a few creative modifications, can be turned into something brand new.1. Product Pages
Most product pages are not particularly linkable. They have prices, specs, not a lot of content and are often buried on dynamic URL’s somewhere in the bowels of a website. But a product page can actually be made into a link magnet.
It helps to have a product which is truly unique, new, funny, dirt cheap or flat-out phenomenal. Take Baconsalt’s Bacon flavored envelopes a totally random but amusing concept. And the product page has picked up about 65 backlinks. Not too shabby, for paper that tastes like processed pork.
The best way to make product pages more linkable is to pick 1 or 2 products at a time and focus on those. If your products are usually presented on dynamic URL’s create new static pages with unique content for promoting your “featured products”. This will help you pass the most link power and avoid canonical issues.2. About Us/ Company News
Company news which actually impacts people outside the company can definitely be linkable. For example, acts of charity matter to the people who benefit from them. Contests can matter to the people who are eligible for them. Company Awards are also a viable option. (Not your company’s many accolades though; no one really cares about those, at least not link-wise). However people may care what awards you’re giving out… see the difference? Try giving recognition to websites within your industry for their efforts, not competitors if you can avoid it, but quality blogs, hobby sites or informational networks. It doesn’t hurt if “recognition” comes in the form of a badge with a back link to you.
