Unbrick Verizon Galaxy S3 Using Odin

The Verizon Galaxy S3 has to be the most problematic variant of the Galaxy S3. If the locked bootloader on it wasn’t enough, many users have seen their Verizon Galaxy S3 get bricked and stop booting after trying to flash a custom ROM, making it a very expensive paperweight. Normally, the only way to fix this is to send the phone it to Verizon, and probably also pay the full price of the phone for a replacement.

However, thanks to XDA Recognized Developer PureMotive, we can now fix a bricked Verizon Galaxy S3 and get it running again just like new. The procedure involves flashing a few files that fix the device’s bootloader and make it work normally again, and the guide below will walk you through it with step-by-step-instructions.

Something important to note is that the procedure is quite long, and if not followed properly, it will not work. So read instruction carefully, twice if you have to, and your phone will be fixed and running again in no time.

Now let’s take a look at how the Verizon Galaxy S3 can be unbricked.

How to Unbrick Verizon Galaxy S3

Download Drivers

Extract the chúng tôi file to a convenient location on the computer to get a folder named Odin307 with 4 files inside.

Download the following files:

VRALEC.bootchain.tar.md5

BOOTLOADER_I535VRALF2_618049_REV09_user_low_ship.tar.md5

Open this file in a torrent application like µTorrent to download a file named stock.vzw_root66.7z. After downloading the stock.vzw_root66.7z file, extract it to get a file named stock.vzw_root66.tar (use a software like 7-zip to extract).

Make sure phone is off. Boot into download mode. To do so, hold down the Volume Down, Home and then the Power buttons together until a Warning!! message is displayed on the screen. Here, press Volume Up to enter download mode. A green Android and the text Downloading will be displayed on the screen.

Then, connect the phone to the computer with the USB cable and wait for Windows to finish installing drivers. Odin will say Added!! in the message box on the bottom left if the phone is detected successfully. If not, make sure the drivers are installed and also try using a different USB port – preferably a USB port on the back if using a desktop computer.

Wait till flashing is complete and you get a PASS message in Odin. When that happens, disconnect the phone from the computer, but DON’T turn it off and let it stay in download mode. Also close Odin.

Reconnect your phone to the computer (while it is in download mode). Open Odin again.

When flashing is complete and you get a PASS message, disconnect the phone and close Odin. But keep the phone in download mode, don’t turn it off.

Open Odin again and also reconnect the phone to the computer.

The phone will still not boot up completely. Now, remove the battery on the phone, then re-insert it. Don’t turn it on.

In recovery, use the volume buttons to scroll up/down and the home button to select options.

Select wipe data/factory reset, then select Yes on next screen to confirm. Wait a while till the data wipe is complete (this will NOT delete your personal files on the SD cards).

Select wipe cache, confirm, then wait for cache wipe to be completed.

Then, select reboot system now to reboot the phone.

The phone will now boot up properly into Android and is fixed, and you will be able to use it now.

Your Verizon Galaxy S3 is now fixed, and has saved you from sending it in for repair to Verizon. Do let us know how the procedure works!

Update Galaxy S To Jelly Bean With Blackbean Rom

It’s been more than two years since the Samsung Galaxy S was released, but despite many new and better devices having come out, some are still sticking to their Galaxy S, which includes custom ROM developers that continue to keep it updated unofficially to the latest version of Android.

A new Android 4.1 Jelly Bean based custom ROM has come out for the Galaxy S – Blackbean ROM, which is based on stock Android 4.1 but takes customization features and other things from many different ROMs and integrates them together. The ROM also has been inverted to have a black background theme all through the interface, including inverted system apps as well.

“Samsung Captivate owners can try out Jelly Bean ROMs → here, while Vibrant owners can find some → here.”

NOTE, Please Read: Since this is an unofficial AOSP based ROM, some features like 3G video calling will be unavailable as those are only possible on stock Samsung ROMs (video calls using 3rd party apps like Skype will work fine though). Some other features such as an FM radio will be missing too, and some apps like camera may not be the same as on stock ROMs.

Let’s take a look at how the Blackbean ROM can be installed on the Galaxy S.

Compatibility

This ROM and the guide below are compatible only and only with the Samsung Galaxy S, model number i9000. It’s not compatible the GT-i9003 or with any other device and may render an incompatible device unusable. Check your device model in Settings » About phone.

Warning!

The methods and procedures discussed here are considered risky and you should not attempt anything if you don’t know exactly what you are doing. If any damage occurs to your device, we won’t be held liable.

How to Install Blackbean ROM on Galaxy S i9000

NOTE, Please Read: If you are already running an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich or a Jelly Bean ROM on your phone, you DO NOT need to perform steps 3 and 4 below and can skip to step 5 after step 2.

NOTE: Don’t forget to at least make a backup of your APN settings, which you can restore later if your data connection does not work after installing the ROM. Use the backup guide to find out how.

Remove SIM Card lock, if you have set it earlier. Go here: Settings » Location and Security » SIM Card lock » checkbox should be clear (not selected).

Flash the stock XXJW4 firmware by using → this guide.

Root XXJW4 to obtain Clockworkmod recovery (CWM) by using → this guide.

Download the latest version of the ROM from source page.

Copy the downloaded zip file to the internal SD card.

Turn off your Galaxy S and wait for complete shutdown (wait for vibration and check capacitive button lights).

In recovery, use Volume keys to scroll up and down and power key to select an option.

Select wipe data/factory reset, then select Yes on next screen to confirm. Wait a while till the data wipe is complete.

Select install zip from sdcard, then select choose zip from sdcard. Scroll to the ROM file on the sdcard and select it. Confirm installation by selecting Yes on the next screen. The ROM will start installing.

The phone will reboot into recovery in the middle of installation and then continue installing the ROM. However, if it simply reboots but doesn’t continue installation, repeat step 10. Or, if the phone gets stuck at the boot screen after rebooting, remove and re-insert the battery, then repeat from step 8.

NOTE: To go back to a stock Samsung ROM if you don’t like this ROM, you can install the XXJW4 ROM by following the guide linked in step 2 above.

Also try out some other Jelly Bean ROMs for the Galaxy S → here.

Apple Analysts React To Galaxy S4 Launch With A Variety Of Wild Insights

Samsung officially unveiled its flagship Galaxy S4 smartphone last night at a theatrical, Broadway-style presentation in New York, and analysts are quick to jump in today with opinions on what it means for Apple. AAPL is having a decent morning hitting a high of 442.50 and opinions from analysts seem to be split down the middle regarding whether the S4 has what it takes to cut into Apple’s market share.

Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray doesn’t seem too impressed with the S4 upgrade but noted Samsung’s new S Band is “a quick first pass for Samsung on wearable technology ahead of Apple’s watch. Munster added that he expects Apple to launch its smart watch product by 2014 (via Barron’s):

The Galaxy S4 appears to be largely an incremental update to the S3 including a slightly larger screen (4% larger on diagonal), better camera and processor, and updated software, but largely the same body style and casing. We believe some of the software features are unique, including the tilt to scroll, video pausing based on facial recognition, and hand gesture based interactions, but view these software improvements as minor compared with what Siri was to the iPhone 4S or even Google Now to Android.

Jefferies analyst Peter Misek thought the S4 will be “incrementally negative for Apple” but doesn’t view the S4 upgrade as “revolutionary” (via Zdnet):

Sterne Agee’s Shaw Wu lowered his price target today from $715 to $630 after the introduction of Samsung’s Galaxy S4, while noting that recent supplier checks indicated production of current iPhones has slowed as Apple gears up for an iPhone 5S launch later this year. He doesn’t, however, expect an iPhone with a larger screen until 2014 (via MarketWatch):

“We are picking up from our supplier checks build plan reductions for iPhone likely due to an inventory drawdown ahead of refreshes in the second half. In addition, we see evidence of sourcing activity for what appears to be iPhone 5S and a lower-cost iPhone using composite material casing,”

Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities said today that recent supplier checks indicated Apple would launch its rumored low-cost iPhone with the same 4-inch display as the iPhone 5. He also said the device will be made out of a “super-thin plastic casing mixed with glass fiber” and come in four to six colors. Kuo claimed earlier this year that Apple will include a fingerprint sensor under the home button in an iPhone 5S, and today confirmed he still believed the device is coming later this year.

BTIG analyst Walter Piecyk chimed in yesterday, claiming a new low-cost iPhone is “necessary in order for Apple to grow its EPS next year” (via AllThingsD):

“We believe a product that addresses the more than 70 percent of global wireless subscribers that are unsubsidized pre-paid is necessary in order for Apple to grow its EPS next year,” Piecyk writes. “This is not rocket science and our belief is based on basic logic, not questionable ‘channel checks’ or trips to Asia.”

Barclays’ Ben Reitzes thought Samsung’s momentum “is a major issue for Apple,” and the GS4 will be more competition as expected (via Fortune):

“In terms of competition vs. Apple, the GS4 seems largely as expected – and there could be some relief for Apple (certain versions of LTE won’t be available until later this year). However, as we stated recently in a recent report – we believe that Samsung’s momentum is a major issue for Apple. As a result, we need to see Apple expand its iPhone market this year in a big way – and improve its platform. However, Apple seems rather silent of late – and could be waiting until C3Q to make any competitive response outside of potential adjustments to pricing.”
