Suggested January 2024 Recover Files From Ext3/Ext4 Filesystem With Linux Live Cd

At one time or another, every computer user has accidentally deleted a file on his system. This is particularly true for Linux users, where a command like rm -rf . immediately deletes all files and folders in the current directory.

Recovering files from a Windows FAT/NTFS partition has been discussed previously. This article discusses the steps to recover files from EXT3/EXT4 partitions using an Ubuntu system. The techniques are the same for every Linux distro (except for the installation process, which are distro specific).

Preparation

The first thing to do immediately after realizing you’ve deleted the wrong files is to unmount the file system, or mount as read-only. If the files are on your root partition, you should immediately shut down your system, and boot a live cd. This is very important to prevent other processes from overwriting your files. Even if you don’t explicitly overwrite the files, other system processes could write to the filesystem, and overwrite your files.

This article will make use of a system that has a single partition, and uses a Xubuntu live CD to recover the deleted files. The live cd should be started with the option to “try without installing.” On bootup, we launch a terminal, create a mount point using the command:

mkdir

root_dir

and mount the desired partition

Extundelete

Extundelete is an open source tool and is available on SourceForge. However, you can install it on Ubuntu using:

To restore a single file, (assuming you know the file name) use the command:

To restore all files in a directory, use the command:

Ext4magic

This is also an open source tool, available on SourceForge.

It is also available in the Ubuntu repositories and can be installed using:

sudo

apt-get install

ext4magic

With Ext4magic, the partition can be queried for a list of deleted files and the percentage of the file available for recovery. This can be done using the -a (deleted after the given time) and/or -b (deleted before the given time) options. These times are calculated in seconds since the Unix epoch. A command to find all deleted files within the previous 24 hours in the Music folder, for example, is:

To recover these files, we use the -r option, together with the -d (output directory) option, like so:

Note that the -f option indicates the directory within the partition structure “home/obaro/Music” without the leading “/”. To recover a single file, specify the file name for -f, rather than the directory.

Conclusion

The probability of recovery files using both of these tools drops significantly the longer the partition remains in use after file deletion. This is also affected by conditions where data is being written to the partition/device. It is recommended that the “/home” directory be on a separate partition from your root directory. With a file system structured this way, files can be recovered without resorting to a live cd.

The best way to ensure data recovery is to have backups. However, backups will be useless in cases where new files, which haven’t been backed up get deleted.

FAQs

A CD player is a relatively easy-to-use and simple electronic device. Let’s examine the key parts of the CD player, so we know what to look for when comparing two models:

Digital-to-analog converter (DAC):

DAC is a computer chip that helps transform digital signals into physical sound. The full form of DAC is a digital-to-analog converter. It is needed because speakers only play an analog signal. You need a DAC, which converts digital information into analog sound.

Transport:

Connections:

Some CD players offer one set of RCA connections that passes the output of the built-in DAC. They also provide a digital coaxial or optical output if you want to use an external DAC. Some high-end quality CD players will also provide balanced XLR output for connecting to audiophile gear.

Chassis:

Vibration is an enemy of great sound, so you need to consider a CD player’s chassis quality and how it is built. There are various ways to reinforce a player’s case. You can check this detail from companies’ websites, seller’s websites or read brochures that describe product details.

Power supply:

An excellent power supply is important for any electronic equipment. Rugged toroidal transformers are highly praised in the electronics industry for providing high-current, low-noise power.

Media types:

Any CD player can handle mass-produced standard CDs. However, if you have home-recorded CDs filled with WAV, FLAC, or similar extension files, then you should better check it to ensure you’re buying a CD player that is compatible with the mentioned formats.

The same goes for SACDs (Super Audio CDs) that can be played on a regular CD player. However, you need an ACD-compatible player to bring out the additional channels of high-res information which they’re known for.

Before making your final CD player purchase, you must know what you’re getting in your CD player, as most of them have various audio formats, inputs and outputs, and various other technical specifications.

Here are some most important factors you should consider:

Audio Formats: Modern CD players generally support FM radio, aux, or Bluetooth formats and off-playing CDs. So, if you have any CD-Rs or CD-RWs that you have burned yourself, they may not work on any old CD player. So, it would help if you look for a CD player for home that can play various types of audio formats.

Sound Quality: The main reason anyone would select CDs over other audio formats is the superior sound quality. There are many multi-disc CD players available in the market that will satisfy the ears of audiophiles everywhere.

Build Quality: CD players need to have a certain amount of bulk to drone out vibrations that may affect the audio quality. The CD player that you choose should offer a robust and solid build quality with sturdy chassis, which easily influences the overall sound and your listening experience.

Connections and Media Types: Mostly, CD players have two RCA outputs, which help you connect to an amplifier or receiver. Other popular connectivity options are USB, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi connectivity.

Digital-to-Analog Converter: Digital-to-analog converters convert the digital file from the source into an analog signal for playback. Most portable CDs and boomboxes will have the DAC built-in. You need to check that before making the final purchase.

Power Supply: Most CD players need a 12V outlet. There are some wireless and rechargeable or battery-powered CD players also available. You must check the type of power supply of the CD player.

Portability: The portability of CD players ranges from unmovable to slipping into your pocket for a smooth bike ride enjoying your favorite music albums. You can also find many high-end premium CD players or decks that will not move from your entertainment center.

Speakers: If you want a small CD player in your kitchen, you probably don’t need large speakers. However, you should check that your CD player device includes regular-sized speakers for decent sound quality.

Bluetooth: It is true that the primary function of buying a CD player is to listen to your favorite music via CDs. However, you can also listen to your favorite playlists from computers, smartphones, tablets, etc., digital devices using Bluetooth-enabled CD players.

Here are the different types of CD players available in the market:

Home CD Players: This type of CD player is mostly used for home theater systems and generally offers multiple CD changers. However, this kind of CD player doesn’t have inbuilt speakers. This means you will have to connect speakers to the unit for any audio playback.

Portable CD Player: When it comes to the smallest CD players, one can refer to them as portable CD players. They are generally used with headphones, slightly larger than the CD itself, powered by batteries, and can be taken almost anywhere.

Boombox: This type of CD player usually has a CD player-centered between two speakers. It is very similar to a small stereo that an electrical outlet or battery can power.

Car CD Player: Today, it is also common for cars to come equipped with a CD player. It will usually be a slit in the dashboard where the CD is inserted.

Computer Disc Drive: It’s rare to find a desktop or laptop with a disk drive incapable of playing CDs. This CD-RWS allows you to play your files or copy those files digitally onto your computer’s hard disk.

Below are the best CD players available in the market:

Bose Wave Music System IV

PHILIPS FX10

Sony Portable Bluetooth CD Player

Victrola 50’s Retro Bluetooth

GPX PC332B Portable CD Player

Here are the simple steps to clean your CD player so that it functions effectively:

Step 1) Confirm that your CD player does not have any disk inserted

Before beginning your cleaning process, you need to make sure that no CD remains in the drive. For that, open the CD drive tray, pull out the CD and disconnect the power supply.

Step 2) Blow away all the dust with a handheld air bulb

The rubber bulbs are available as dust blowers, which are also used with stock cameras or jewelers. Squeeze the bulb to gently blow all the dust out of the CD slot and disk tray.

Step 3) Remove the lens cover

When you have access to the tray which holds the CD, look for small screws holding the plastic cover over the lens assembly. You need to remove these screws gently or press on the catches carefully with a small screwdriver.

Step 4) Select a lint-free cleaner

Here, you can use a clean microfiber cloth, which is a special swab for cleaning electronics.

Step 5) Try a lens cleaner disc

These special types of CDs brush the CD drive lightly and remove dust. However, you need to remember that it doesn’t work with all types of CD players.

Not all CD players have built-in speakers. However, you can find some portable CD players with speakers on our list. The difference between CD players with and without speakers is obvious, so you shouldn’t be having any problems identifying those with speakers. They are always larger, heavier, and mostly look like boomboxes.

DAC is the most important and integral part of every CD player. Without this hardware, you wouldn’t hear the music since we cannot hear or see digital data. Human brains and senses perceive only analog information, and that’s why we require a device that converts digital data into analog.

Some portable CD players offer built-in Bluetooth transmitters or receivers. These CD player systems look like boomboxes, have Bluetooth receivers, and can be used as Bluetooth speakers.

Portable CD players without speakers mostly have built-in transmitters. They can send audio wirelessly to Bluetooth headphones, Bluetooth speakers, and also to your Bluetooth-enabled car audio system.

Live From Bu, It’s Pals & Friends

Live from BU, It’s Pals & Friends Sketch comedy show latest on BUTV10’s lineup

The second episode of Pals & Friends, BUTV10’s only sketch comedy program, airs tonight at 8 p.m. Graphic by Allie Caton (CAS’ 18)

Editor’s Note: Episode 2 of Pals & Friends will air tomorrow, Wednesday, April 22 at 8 p.m. not Tuesday, April 21 at 8 p.m. as originally reported.

The past few years have been something of a golden age for television sketch comedy. The long-running NBC juggernaut Saturday Night Live aside, smaller sketch-based shows like Key & Peele, Whitest Kids U’ Know, Inside Amy Schumer, and Portlandia have all found audiences drawn to the genre.

Now, BUTV10 is following suit with its newest comedy series, Pals & Friends. While the station has long produced comedy shows, including sitcoms Welcome Back Brotter and Co-Ed: The Next Generation and the morning news show parody The Morning After, Pals & Friends is unique in that it is BUTV10’s only sketch comedy show. Produced, written, edited, and performed entirely by students, it debuted late last month. Episode two airs tonight at 8 p.m.

Dale Mason (COM’15), Annie Melden (COM’16), and Jillian Richardson (COM’15) began developing the show in February 2014. Since then, nearly 50 people have been involved, either as cast members, crew members, writers, or a combination of the three. Many of the show’s writers and cast members are comedy veterans, having worked previously with various comedy groups on campus, including the Callbacks, Liquid Fun, Sons of Liberty, and Slow Children at Play.

Pals & Friends’ executive producer Mason says that collaboration among comedians of such different backgrounds helps to produce energetic and entertaining sketches that appeal to fans of all comedic genres. “Each cast member brings their own set of skills to the table, and that makes it a really fun and interesting acting experience,” he says. “I think that comedy in general is a family. These groups on campus aren’t fighting each other for who is best; they all want to learn and have a good time. Comedy is about making that community, being friendly, and helping each other achieve goals.”

In fact, the name of the show was inspired by the bonds that developed among the staff. “We started with a lot of friends who were interested in working on or being on the show,” Mason says. “The people we brought into the production quickly became family and now pals and friends truly defines the group we work with.”

The first season of Pals & Friends is almost entirely dedicated to parodying television. The pilot features a mock newscast, complete with two incompetent, bickering anchors, a recently jilted man-on-the-street reporter interviewing couples about their relationships, and an investigative reporter exploring the consequences of holding up the line at a local fast food restaurant.

Tonight’s episode is a send-up of PBS, with parodies of familiar public television series like Zoom, Zaboomafoo, and The Joy of Painting. The third episode, slated to air next Monday, April 27, spoofs reality television and contains a sketch titled “America’s Next Top Hand Model” and a parody of the popular History Channel series Pawn Stars, which was shot on location in Market Square Exchange and Emporium, an actual pawnshop in Lynn, Mass.

Producer, writer, and cast member Jack Wall (COM’15) says that while it’s expected that the show’s focus will expand next year, this season’s emphasis on television adds something new to the well-saturated sketch comedy genre. “I personally have never seen a sketch show dedicated to parodying the medium that it’s presented on,” he says. “I think taking the angle of making fun of television is, in a way, our niche.”

Each 10-minute episode can take nearly two months to produce, says Mason, because of the difficulty in coordinating the schedules of such a large group. Despite the long hours, working on Pals & Friends has been an invaluable professional experience for the writers, cast, and crew. “One of the things that I love most about BU is that the school lets you work on a television show with sets and equipment that are on par with those professionals would use,” Richardson says. “Writing a high-quality sketch that’s put on film and is part of an established TV show is pretty much every college comedian’s dream. We all get credits that we can put on our resume, and clips that we can put in reels. Essentially, we get to say, look, I made something, and it looks nice. And it was shown on TV!”

When it comes to the group’s audience, Wall says he hopes the show makes BU students laugh and momentarily forget the daily stresses of college life. “I’ve always thought comedy is a way of taking a break from how dramatic and heavy and unnecessarily dark life can sometimes seem as a college student,” he says. “I just hope that it’s a nice break for some people.”

The second episode of Pals & Friends airs tonight at 8 p.m. and the third airs next Monday, April 27, at 8 p.m. on BUTV10. Watch episodes anytime online at the BUTV10 website and on the Pals & Friends YouTube channel.

Accessing Your Linux Server From Android

If you have a Linux server and it’s not in your living room, chances are good you connect to it remotely. You could be using that server for web hosting, backups, as a development box. or all of the above. No matter what, a remote connection is handy.

Most of the time it would be easy to assume you’re connecting from another computer. You might not have access to a computer all of the time, though. But what about your Android device? Not only is connecting from an Android device doable, it’s fairly easy.

Before you get started

Before you start connecting to your server from Android, you should consider how it affects security. Connecting from Android isn’t inherently insecure, but any additional way you connect to your server is another door. Adding a door means that someone else could potentially open that door. That’s not even considering unintended vulnerabilities like Heartbleed, which caused major trouble a few years ago.

Whether or not you’re connecting from Android, you should read up on hardening your server. After all, better safe than sorry.

Set up your server

One of the most common and secure ways to connect to your server is SSH, or Secure Shell. If you haven’t already done so, you’ll want to install OpenSSH, which also includes SFTP (Secure FTP). Installing and configuring SSH is easy, but beyond the scope of this article. Fear not, as we have a step-by-step guide to installing and configuring SSH and SFTP on Ubuntu. Even if you’re using another distribution, those instructions can get you most of the way there.

Set up your Android device

Both SSH and SFTP are pretty keyboard-heavy, so you may want to consider using a Bluetooth keyboard with your device. There are plenty of Android-compatible Bluetooth keyboards available, and many of them are very affordable. Alternatively, if you don’t have access to an external keyboard, you can install and use the Hacker’s keyboard app.

Next, you’ll need to get yourself an SSH app to connect to your server from Android. Two of the most popular options available right now are JuiceSSH and Termius.

JuiceSSH

JuiceSSH supports Bluetooth keyboards and offers plenty of options. The base version of the app supports two-factor authentication, optional plugins, and ZLib compression on SSH connections. Upgrading to the Pro version adds more color schemes, automatic backup of your connections, and a handy widget. The app is available for free on the Google Play Store.

Termius

Termius is another popular option. In addition to SSH, this app also supports SFTP. If you frequently find yourself needing to upload files from your Android device to your server, this is handy. The free version of the app available on Google Play has most of the features you’ll need. Unfortunately, SFTP support is only included in the Premium version, which costs $59.88 per year.

Connecting to your server

To connect to your server, you’ll either need your username and password or your private SSH key. Using a username and password is easier but is also far less secure. The guide to configuring SSH on Ubuntu above includes a step on generating your keys. To use these with your Android SSH app of choice, you’ll need to copy your public key to your device. One of the easiest ways to do this is to save your key in a password manager like 1Password or LastPass and copy and paste it on your Android phone.

Determining your IP address

Once you have your key imported, all you’ll need is your server’s IP address. There are multiple ways to determine this. First you need to know which IP address you’re looking for.

If your server is a web host or a remote host from a service like Linode or DigitalOcean, you’ll need your server’s public IP address. One simple way is to type the command curl chúng tôi in a terminal window on your server. This uses a website to retrieve your public IP address.

Once you have your private key and IP address, you can use this to connect from your Android device. If you’re looking for things to do on your server’s command line, we have a list to get you started.
