Oculus Rift S: Which Is Best In 2023?

But which one of the two is better? The wireless Quest or the wired made-for-PC Rift S? I’m here to give you the verdict of Oculus Quest vs. Oculus Rift S.

Oculus Quest vs Rift S Specs

The Rift’s refresh rate is 8Hz higher, but this isn’t a big enough jump to really be noticeable for the average user.

In the Quest’s defense, VR’s immersion isn’t just in the graphics – it’s in the freedom of movement. And in that respect, the Quest more than makes up for its lesser firepower. To be able to play a boxing game like Thrill of the Fight freely in an area about the size of an actual boxing ring, or to move around in the slow-mo shooter Superhot without worrying about getting twisted in cables, is extremely liberating.

Enter the Oculus Link

Things get interesting with Oculus Link, a feature that’s been declared by some as the cable to cannibalize the Oculus Rift S in favor of the Quest. Thanks to a software update introduced in late 2023 called Oculus Link, you can connect your Oculus Quest to your PC and use it to play PC VR games, just like the Rift S. You can use the rather pricey Oculus Link cable, or any data-carrying USB 3.1 cable.

Who’s the Winner?

At an identical price of $399, it’s easy to make a direct comparison: Oculus Quest vs. Oculus Rift S. More “hardcore” VR players may say that the Rift S, being designed for PC, works better with PC games, but the differences really are marginal compared to the Quest when used with the Link cable. Add to that the Quest’s superior resolution (when tweaked) and wireless capabilities, and it comes out as the far more versatile device.

Both the Rift S and Quest (with Link cable) will let you play the excellent Half-Life Alyx on PC

If you really want a graphically optimal VR experience, then you’d need to look at the $1000 Valve Index along with a powerful PC graphics card to feel the difference. But in the mid-range, the plucky Quest wins out.

Oculus Quest Controller Not Working? 18 Fixes To Try

However, even the best tech can encounter hiccups like Oculus Quest controller issues. This guide will walk you through several troubleshooting tips to get your controllers (and you) back in action.

Table of Contents

Note: In this article, we’re referring to the Quest as the “Oculus” Quest since that’s still the brand most people are familiar with and is, in fact, written on the boxes of most Quests. However, the new official name for the product is the Meta Quest.

1. Use Hand Tracking

Hand tracking relies on specific gestures to interact with the VR environment. Familiarize yourself with the following basic gestures:

Point and Pinch:

Aim your hand at the object you want to select and pinch your thumb and finger together.

Pinch and Scroll:

Pinch your fingers inward and move your hand up, down, left, or right to scroll. Release your fingers when finished.

Palm Pinch:

Look at your palm at eye level, hold your thumb and index finger together until the progress circle fills, and then release.

Other gestures and interactions depend on the app or game you’re using, so be sure to check for specific instructions within the app or game. However, these three main gestures will get you through any system menus you need to interact with.

Tip: Some Quest games also support using an Xbox controller. While this may not be as immersive as using the Touch controller

2. Check the Batteries

Always begin troubleshooting by examining the device’s power source. Make sure your Oculus Quest controller has fresh AA batteries. Replace low batteries with new, high-quality alkaline or rechargeable ones for optimal performance. Make sure the battery is correctly seated in the battery compartment.

3. Ensure Adequate Charging Time

If you’re using rechargeable batteries in your Oculus Quest controller, ensure they have been adequately charged before use. Poorly charged batteries can result in performance or connectivity issues.

4. Ensure the Controller Is Turned On

It may sound obvious, but check that your controller is turned on. Press and hold the power button until the LED light turns on. If it doesn’t, the power button might be the issue, requiring further investigation or replacement.

5. Inspect the Controller’s LED Light

Switch off both devices and turn them back on to resolve minor glitches. If issues persist, perform a complete restart by powering down both devices and removing the controller’s batteries before turning them back on.

8. Test the Controller in Another Game or App

If the controller isn’t working in a specific game or app, test it in another. This can help you determine if the issue is game-or app-related or a controller problem. Contact the game or app developer for support if the controller works fine elsewhere.

9. Check for Updates

10. Pair the Controller

Choose the

currently paired controller

that’s not working correctly. E.g., the Right Controller or the Left Controller.

Unpair Controller

, select

Pair New Controller

Follow the instructions to pair the controller again and test it to see if it works properly.

11. Clean the Controller

Dirt and grime can hinder the controller’s functionality. Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior, being careful not to let moisture enter the controller as it can damage internal components. Focus on the buttons, triggers, and joystick, where dirt can accumulate and cause issues.

Avoid harsh chemicals such as alcohol, especially if you’re experiencing stick drift. Unfortunately, the nature of the stick sensors in most controllers (including Quest and Quest 2) means that they will eventually drift as the contacts degrade. Short of replacing the thumbstick assembly completely, the only way around this is to calibrate the controller until the drift becomes too much for software compensation. Then a replacement is needed.

12. Inspect the Controller for Damage

If your controller isn’t working after trying the above steps, visually inspect it for damage. Look for cracks in the casing or other visible issues that could be causing problems. If you find any damage, consider a replacement or contact Oculus Support for assistance if you think it’s a factory error.

13. Check the Play Area

The Oculus Quest uses external sensors to track the controller’s position. If you’re experiencing tracking issues, ensure your play area is free of obstructions and reflective surfaces that could interfere with the sensors. Ensure the room is well-lit, as poor lighting conditions can negatively impact tracking performance.

14. Test the Controller on Another Oculus Quest

15. Consider External Factors

External factors like radio frequency interference from other devices or Wi-Fi networks can cause issues with your Oculus Quest controller. Try turning off nearby electronic devices and see if the issue persists. If you’re using Wi-Fi, consider switching to a different frequency band or moving your router away from your play area.

16. Check the Guardian Settings

17. Factory Reset Oculus Quest

Open the

Quest app

on your phone.

Now set up your Quest from scratch to see if this resolved your controller issues.

18 Contact Oculus Support

If your controller still isn’t working, reach out to Oculus Support. Provide a detailed description of the issue and any steps you’ve taken to resolve it. Oculus Support can help diagnose the problem, provide further guidance on how to fix it, or determine if a replacement is necessary.

Flush With Facebook Cash, Oculus Is Going After Vr Games

When Oculus VR announced it was being acquired by Facebook for $2 billion, the response was…well, “contentious” would be an understatement. Some very vocal VR fans were not happy to see the scrappy start-up gobbled up by the social media giant. But let’s be honest: The acquisition has a ton of upside potential, too.

A real virtual reality experience needs real virtual reality games

Virtual reality is coming, barring catastrophe. I’d almost swear on it. If I had any doubts about VR’s widespread appeal in the past, they were eliminated after trying out the second version of the Oculus Rift developer kit, affectionately termed DK2. With lower latency and position tracking, DK2 is the definitive virtual reality experience at the moment and eliminates many of the problems faced by the earlier model.

The second-generation Oculus developer’s kit, with a small camera accessory for positional tracking. (The first-generation dev kit only tracked your gaze.)

But VR is starting from scratch when it comes to content. Games designed for static cameras don’t translate to virtual reality without significant rejiggering. So far, the community has been responsible for most Rift content, and while the existing demos are certainly interesting they’re not exactly full games per se. (Though a small handful of full games already includes Rift support, to be sure.)

Enter Facebook, with monocle and bag of money. “With Facebook we’ve been able to invest in more content. Even though the deal hasn’t closed, we’ve been able to toss more of our remaining bank account towards publishing,” says Oculus VP of product Nate Mitchell.

“We’ve hired, like, forty people since the Facebook acquisition, so the company is growing really, really fast. Some of the best people in the industry,” Mitchell continues. Some of the best people indeed, like Doom co-creator and gaming industry legend John Carmack, who is now Oculus’ chief technology officer. This very week, Oculus announced it had hired Naughty Dog co-founder and former THQ president Jason Rubin.

“With Rubin coming onboard we’re focusing on our first-party content initiative, so really focusing on bringing more great content to the platform, which is key. Without that, we’re just a heavy pair of ski goggles,” says Mitchell. “You can imagine that some of the first experiences you try when you get a Rift will be from us.

Nate Mitchell, Oculus VR’s VP of product.

Hiring PC gaming’s best and brightest

And then there’s Jason Holtman, formerly the head of Steam over at Valve. Holtman comes to Oculus after a very brief stint at Microsoft. “He had a big hand in Steamworks and a lot of the stuff they put in place to have an awesome developer ecosystem. We’re doing a lot of that same stuff at Oculus,” says Mitchell.

Holtman’s not the only ex-Valve employee at Oculus nowadays—a situation that’s becoming even more notable month to month. Michael Abrash, a VR guru and former Carmack cohort at id, is another recent key Valve-to-Oculus defection, along with Aaron Nicholls, former Valve VR lead Atman Binstock, and others.

“A lot of the people on the Valve VR team have come over to Oculus. There’s still a really talented group of people at Valve working on VR, but a lot of the people we were working most closely with are at Oculus now. A lot of those guys are heading up R&D for us, which is similar to what they were doing at Valve—looking five to ten years off.”

Allaying Facebook fears

And what does five to ten years mean in the post-Facebook era? That’s everyone’s greatest fear—that Facebook takes the Rift and turns it into an ad-ridden piece of social networking garbage. It’s still a valid fear, and one we won’t really have an answer to for years, potentially.

Games like Alien: Isolation, Lucky Tales, and Superhot, all of which I got to demo at E3.

Lucky’s Tale is a colorful platformer that stands out from the horde of first-person experiences currently available for the Rift.

Playful’s Lucky’s Tale is a true built-for-VR experience, but not like you’d expect. It’s actually a third-person platformer, of all things—it looks a lot like a modern, VR version of Crash Bandicoot, actually, which is funny considering the recent Rubin hire. (Naughty Dog made Crash Bandicoot on Rubin’s watch.)

Superhot feels like traditional shooter mixed with The Matrix.

Alien: Isolation would be a natural and stellar fit for the Oculus Rift, though its developers stress that it’s undetermined if the full game will wind up supporting VR.

Finally, there’s Alien: Isolation, which is a full-blown game from Sega arriving this fall. Isolation is really a horror game where you play a weak human hiding and fleeing from a large, terrifying Alien from the namesake series of movies. It’s a perfect fit for the Oculus in that capacity—the enclosed feel of the Rift is a natural match for horror. I only got to play for a few minutes, but it already made Isolation feel like a more interesting and intimidating game than it did when I played on a normal monitor.

Opera Vs Opera Mini – Which Is The Better Browser In 2023?

Opera Vs Opera Mini – Which Is The Better Browser in 2023? A detailed comparison between two browsers to aid your decision

Having to choose between Opera and Opera Mini can be difficult due to many aspects to compare and consider.

Opera Mini is popular for its faster web page loading and data-saving features on smartphones.

Opera is a feature-packed browser offering all the essential tools such as VPN, Adblocker, screenshot, and more.

Struggling with various browser issues? Try a better option: Opera One

You deserve a better browser! Over 300 million people use Opera One daily, a fully-fledged navigation experience coming with various built-in packages, enhanced resource consumption, and great design.

Here’s what Opera One can do:

Optimize resource usage: Opera One uses your Ram more efficiently than Brave

AI and User Friendly: New feature directly accessible from the sidebar

Gaming friendly: Opera GX is the first and best browser for gamers

⇒ Get Opera One

While there are many browsers that work on all devices, some are only available on mobile devices. Opera Mini became one of the most popular browsers for mobile devices soon after its launch and has only improved over time.

This was before anything like Edge, Firefox, and Chrome were available for smartphones.

That said, Opera also offers its full-fledged Opera browser for mobiles, which is now based on Chromium.

So, which is the best Opera browser for your smartphone? This article has compared both versions of the Opera browser in different categories to help you choose the best for your needs.

What is the difference between Opera Mini and Opera?

Opera is one of the best browsers for all devices. It is available on Windows, Mac, iOS, Linux, Smart TVs, and almost all modern devices.

With this, you can sync your data across various devices. On the other hand, Opera Mini is a portable version that is only available on mobile devices.

It is focused on faster browsing speed, light resource usage, and data-saving. It lacks some of the features of Opera, like the built-in VPN. So the two browsers are distinctively different.

Cross-Platform compatibility

Opera is available on Android, iOS, Windows, Mac, and Linux platforms. In comparison, the Mini version is limited to Android and features phones only.

So, if you want to keep your data in sync across the devices, Opera mobile is a better choice among the two.

User Interface and Design

With the devices getting larger and larger, it is logical to provide a bottom menu and options. Opera has adopted this better and kept the UI simple.

But the home page is packed with news and shortcuts apps. Fortunately, you can customize the home page experience and disable unnecessary clutter displayed by default.

Accessing browser settings is a little easier on Opera mobile than Mini as the latter will take one tap extra. Opening the menu, you will see that Mini focuses on data saving while Opera has privacy features on display.

On the appearance front, some customization is possible. Both the browsers allow you to apply pre-installed themes, change app layout, customize the toolbars, and more.

Tab Management

It is common to have multiple tabs open when browsing the tab. At times, you may even keep the tabs open even when not using them. This is where the tab switcher becomes important.

Expert tip:

Next, tap on the Desktop icon to access data from your Opera browser installed on your PC. However, this requires signing in to your Opera account.

Scrolling works equally well on both browsers. It may not be the smoothest among the mobile browsers, but there is no major issue that will make it a deal-breaker.

Lastly, if the Opera vs. Opera Mini comparison goes down to the download speed, Opera is the obvious choice.

Be it on the desktop browser or mobile version, Opera does offer similar kinds of privacy features. Both browsers feature a built-in ad blocker that is enabled by default.

There is also an acceptable ad feature that you may want to disable if you don’t want to see any ad on your screen.

That said, Opera Mini misses out on Opera’s VPN feature. It allows you to bypass region-restricted content and browse the web anonymously.

Opera is better, but Mini is Good as well

Whether you want to use Opera or Opera Mini depends on the kind of user you are. Opera Mini is a better choice if you are someone who browses mobile data and wants to save as much data as possible.

On the other hand, Opera also has the data saving feature, but it also offers VPN and some handy tools that Mini misses out on.

Also, Mini is limited to Android and some feature devices, while Oprea is available across platforms. So take both the browsers for a spin before you try to make a switch.

Additional features

Similar to other modern browsers, OperaOpera has included some essential tools to get the work done faster. For example, on OperaOpera, you can save a screenshot of the current page and download it as a PDF.

Although Opera Mini misses out on these features, it offers Offline pages, desktop sites, share, Send to Flow and translate features.

Both Opera and Mini also provide the Night Mode feature. Enabling the feature from the menu will open the web page in Dark Mode.

You can further customize the Night Mode by adjusting the color temperature, dimming, and themes and putting it on schedule.

Fix Oculus Link Black Screen Or Not Working

Are you facing the black screen problem with the Oculus Link software on Windows PC? Here are the solutions that will help you fix the problem.

Oculus Link is a desktop application that allows users to play Oculus Rift content on Quest 2. However, many Oculus users have reported of being experiencing a black screen whenever they try to launch a VR game. Some of the affected users even experienced the same problem amidst the gameplay. It just makes the entire application unusable. If you are struggling with the same problem, this guide is for you. In this guide, we are going to discuss the solutions that will help you fix the problem on your Windows PC.

What causes the black screen problem with Oculus software?

Before we move on to the fixes to resolve the problem, let us try to understand what may cause the black screen issues with Oculus software on Windows. Here are the possible reasons:

The problem might be caused due to faulty and out-of-date graphics, USB, and other device drivers on your PC. If the scenario is applicable, you should try updating your device drivers and then check if the problem is fixed or not.

In case you are using a higher resolution that might be too much for your rig, the black screen problem can occur. You should be able to fix the problem by lowering resolution settings from the Oculus Debug Tool wizard if and only the scenario is applicable.

If you have enabled the in-game overlay feature in your graphics settings, it can be one of the reasons that you are encountering this problem. The in-game overlay is known to interru[t the normal working of games and programs. So, in that case, you should try disabling the feature and then see if the problem is fixed.

The problem may occur if you have enabled the Public Test Channel feature in Oculus. If the scenario applies, try turning off the Public Test Channel which is meant to test the beta version of the software.

You might be dealing with some underlying system file corruption that is causing the issue at hand. In that case, you can try running an SFC scan to fix the problem.

How do I fix the Oculus Link not working?

If Oculus Link is not working on your PC or laptop, try updating your graphics and other drivers. Other than that, you can try reducing the resolution from Oculus settings, disabling in-game overlay from your graphics card settings, or turning off Public Test Channel in Oculus. if that doesn’t work, you can also check by performing an SFC scan on your PC to get rid of the problem.

Now, without much ado, let get straight to the fixes!

Fix Oculus Link Black Screen or Not Working issues

Here are the methods that you can try to fix the black screen problem on Oculus Link or when it is not working while launching a VR game or during the gameplay:

Make sure you have up-to-date device drivers.

Lower the resolution.

Turn off the in-game overlay.

Opt out of Public Test Channel.

Run an SFC scan.

Let us discuss the above solutions in detail now!

1] Make sure you have up-to-date device drivers

The problem that you experience black screen with Oculus Link might be triggered due to the faulty or outdated device drivers including graphics and USB drivers. Oculus devices need particular drivers that help in boosting the overall performance of VR games. So, the first thing you should do to fix the issue is to make sure that you have up-to-date graphics, USB drivers, and any other device driver required by Oculus Link.

You have multiple options to update your device drivers. The first method is the manual one where you can visit the official website of your device manufacturer and download the latest drivers and then install them on your system. Likewise, you can also use Windows Settings, Device Manager, etc., to manually update graphics drivers and other drivers on Windows 11/10.

Another way of updating device drivers is by downloading and installing a third-party driver updater software. They let you update your device drivers automatically. Just download and install any such software and they will detect and update out-of-date drivers on your system.

After updating your device drivers, try starting Oculus Link and see if the black screen issue is resolved now. In case it doesn’t, there might be some other underlying reason that you are receiving black screen issues with Oculus Link. Hence, move on to the next potential fix to resolve the problem.

See: Fix Black Screen after shutdown on Windows computer.

2] Lower the resolution

You might be encountering the problem because of setting up the high resolution on your PC. In that case, you can try lowering your setting i.e., resolution. To do that, you can follow the below steps:

First of all, unplug your Oculus Quest or Rift from your computer.

Now, go to the installation directory of Oculus on your system. By default, you should find it at the below location: C:Program FilesOculus

After that, in the Oculus Debug Tool window, lower the Encode Resolution Width setting. You can also enter a value as per recommendations by Oculus.

Hopefully, this will fix the black screen problem with Oculus. In case it doesn’t, go ahead and try the next potential fix to get rid of the problem.

3] Turn off the in-game overlay

If the above solutions didn’t work for you, you can try disabling the in-game overlay which helps in running games and programs smoother than before. It is a kind of workaround and might work for you as well. So, try doing that using the below steps in the case of GeForce Experience:

Now, go to the General tab and disable the toggle associated with the In-game overlay function.

Next, reboot Oculus Link and VR devices to see if the problem is fixed or not.

In a similar manner, you can disable the in-game overlay feature for other graphics cards as well.

If you still face the black screen problem with Oculus Link, try the next solution.

4] Opt out of Public Test Channel

In case you have enrolled in Public Test Channel, Oculus Link might not work as intended and you end up encountering the black screen problem. It is basically the Beta version of the Oculus application which is available for testing by the general public. So, if the scenario is applicable, disable the Public Test Channel mode. Here is how to do that:

Firstly, run the Oculus Link software.

Now, if you manage to go to the Settings section from the left panel, move to the Beta tab.

Next, disable the toggle associated with the Public Test Channel option.

After that, relaunch Oculus Link and see if the problem is fixed now.

See: VirtualBox displays the Black screen and not Booting guest OS.

5] Run an SFC scan

If none of the above solutions work for you, there might be some system file corruption that is leading to the black screen problem with Oculus. If the scenario applies, you should be able to fix the problem by running a System File Checker (SFC) scan. It will basically fix all the corrupted, damaged, and missing system files and might help you fix the black screen problem with Oculus.

Here are the steps to run an SFC scan on Windows 11/10:

Firstly, open the Command prompt with elevated privilege.

Now, enter the below command in CMD: sfc /scannow

Next, wait for the scan done, see if the problem is fixed or not.

Hopefully, this method will fix the problem for you.
