Suggested March 2024 Nothing Ear (2): Everything You Need To Know
The Nothing Phone (1) is proving a solid mid-range option after several software updates, and we were impressed with the company’s Ear (1) and Ear (Stick) wireless earbuds.
Today, Nothing announced the Nothing Ear (2), an updated in-ear wireless earbud that replaces the Ear (1), the firm’s first-ever product launched in 2023.
Here’s everything you need to know about the Nothing Ear (2).When will the Nothing Ear (2) be released?
Nothing announced the Ear (2) on 22 March 2023, and the buds are available to buy now from Nothing’s website.
From 23 March you can get them from the Nothing Store in Soho, London, and also at Kith retail stores in the US, France, and Japan.
From 28 March Ear (2) will be on sale with other retailers including StockX in the US.How much does the Nothing Ear (2) cost?
The Nothing Ear (2) costs $149/£129/.
The buds are only available in white at launch and look very similar to the Ear (1). In fact, if it weren’t for the tine branding on the stalks of each bud, it’s near impossible to tell they’re the new pair.
In the US and Europe this is the same price as the Nothing Ear (1) but in the UK the Ear (2) is £20 less than the older model.
The Ear (1) originally cost $99/£99/€99 but Nothing had to put the price up in October 2023.
The company’s Ear (Stick) open earbud costs $99/£99/€119.
$149/£129/€149 is still very competitive, undercutting Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 by $100/£120 – and the Ear (2) pack in many similar features.
Henry Burrell / FoundryWhat features and specs does the Nothing Ear (2) have?
The Nothing Ear (2) look very similar to the Ear (1), but the company has changed a few things.
It has kept the stemmed bud design popularised by AirPods but now the controls are even more similar to AirPods, and what we saw on the Ear (Stick), with pinch controls rather than the touch ones on Ear (1).
Also new for Ear (2) is a smaller charging case, a Personal Sound Profile option to adjust EQ, Dual Connection for playback from two devices connections, and upgraded Clear Voice tech to make calls more audible.
There’s also high-quality audio streaming compatibility with the LHDC codec.Personal Sound Profile
This mode will elt you take an ear tip fit test to ensure audio quality and comfort and to make sure the active noise cancellation (ANC) is working well.
A beep test will then ask you if you can hear frequencies at different levels, creating what Nothing calls your Hearing ID.
The software in the Nothing X audio app will then use this (you can toggle it on or off) to adjust how audio sounds – hopefully better given it’s trained to your ears.Dual Connection
For the first time, you can connect a Nothing earbud product to two audio sources simultaneously. It’s handy if you want to be connected to your phone and laptop at the same time and easily switch between the two for calls or video playback.Clear Voice Technology
With three mics and an AI noise reduction algorithm, Nothing says the Ear (2) has the best audio on a Nothing earbud yet.
The mic positioning is designed to add more wind resistance and it is claimed the new buds have better Bluetooth connection thanks to a new antenna structure.
Henry Burrell / FoundryNew custom driver
Ear (2) has a redesigned 11.6mm custom driver to deliver an updated sound. Nothing says low frequencies “go even deeper”. Up the bass.Hi-Res Audio compatible
The Ear (2) are built to playback hi-res audio at frequencies up to 24 bit/192KHz using the LHDC 5.0 codec. This is different to the LDAC codec seen in other hi-res earbuds such as the Sony WF-100XM4.
Nothing says that when turned on, the mode should detect when the audio source is hi-res and playback accordingly. We’ll find out in our review soon.Personalised ANC
With ANC, Nothing Ear (2) lets you pick between three levels or an Adaptive mode that takes in the ambient noise around you to choose how much sound it should let in or block out.
There’s also a now-familiar transparency mode that lets all sounds in so you can talk to others and hear sounds even with the silicon-tipped buds in your ears.Battery life and water resistance
Nothing states with a fully charged set of buds and case you’ll get 36 hours of playback without ANC on. This breaks down to 6 hours of use without ANC on for the buds at a time. A fast charge can add eight hours of playback time from 10 minutes plugged in, allegedly.
The Ear (2) is IP54 rated for dust and water resistance, which equates to sweat from workouts, light rain, and not much else. Keep ‘em dry.
We’ll have a full review of the Nothing Ear (2) in the coming days. In the meantime, check out our roundups of the best wireless earbuds and best budget wireless earbuds to see the best alternatives that are currently on the market.

What is 4K?
4K is a standard for video content that outputs at a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. Essentially, each frame of 4K movie contains approximately four times the detail found in the FHD or HD version of that movie.
Importantly, you’ll need a 4K TV to watch 4K video content. You can’t just watch it on your old HD TV. You’ll need to upgrade. Is 4K the same as HDR?
No. HDR is a separate standard that spins-off of 4K resolution that deals with how wide the colour-gamut of the display output is.
For more on this, read our feature on Everything You Need To Know About HDR TVs.Can HD content be upscaled to 4K?
Yes. However, not without some loss in quality.
Most modern 4K TVs support native upscaling – automatically resizing HD and FHD quality content to suit the larger resolution. Non-4K content will generally look better on a 4K TV than a HD one – but not as good as properly mastered 4K content will.
It’s for this reason that most film distributors are currently re-releasing older films in 4K.Where can I get 4K content?
There are two main ways to get 4K content. The first and easiest way is to buy physical 4K Blu-Rays via retail chains like JB Hi-Fi, EZYDVD, or online through channels like Amazon. While the initial crop of 4K Blu-Ray content was limited to one or two of the major studios, most major Hollywood releases nowadays tend to get a 4K release including films like Mortal Combat, Godzilla, Red Sparrow and Avengers: Infinity War.
You can also now buy classic films that have been remastered in 4K, including oldies like: Psycho and The Wizard of Oz and more recent films like, Gladiator, Back To The Future Trilogy and Inception.
Bear in mind that, if you’re looking to watch 4K Blu-Ray content, you’ll also need to invest in 4K Blu-Ray player and a 4K-ready HDMI 2.0 cable.
The other place you’ll be able to find 4K content is through digital distribution channels like iTunes and the Google Play Movies store. Unfortunately for Australian audiences, only select studios are currently offering 4K content through these channels at the time of writing.
Foxtel also has 4K channels, including a 4K Ultra HD movie channel and a 4K Ultra HD sports channel. To view the Foxtel 4K content, you’ll need a 4K TV, active Foxtel subscription and the company’s new iQ4 set top box.Can I stream 4K content on a streaming service like Netflix?
That’s the other major source for 4K content at the moment. Netflix, Stan and Amazon Prime all support 4K content for most of their original series and some licensed content.
Of course, in order for you to access any of that content, you’ll need adequate bandwidth. For Netflix users, this translates to the following:
0.5 Megabits per second – Required broadband connection speed
1.5 Megabits per second – Recommended broadband connection speed
3.0 Megabits per second – Recommended for SD quality
5.0 Megabits per second – Recommended for HD quality
25 Megabits per second – Recommended for Ultra HD quality
Select original streaming content on these platforms has also been graded to make use of HDR standards like HDR10 and Dolby Vision. Can I play video games in 4K?
4K gaming is supported by Sony’s PlayStation 4 Pro and PlayStation 5, Microsoft’s Xbox One X, Xbox One S and Xbox Series X consoles.
However, it’s worth noting that, only the standard PlayStation 5, Xbox One X, Xbox One S and Xbox Series X support physical 4K Blu-ray discs.
Rumours are currently rife that we will soon see a Nintendo Switch 2 that supports 4K gameplay, yet nothing concrete has yet been confirmed.
As for PC, 4K gaming is taking off rapidly with 4K monitors now easy to find and also highly affordable. There are many games now available that support 4K, including titles like Metro Exodus, Metal Gear Solid V and Battlefield 1.
Once again, you will need the correct hardware. As well as a 4K monitor, you will need a graphics card that can support 4K gameplay. The newer and more powerful your graphics card, the better.
Optimally, you will want to have an Nvidia RTX 30 Series or AMD Radeon RX6000 Series graphics card installed, since these are the newest and most optimised graphics cards for 4K gaming. However, you could also get away with an older graphics card as long as it isn’t too underpowered. We wouldn’t recommend anything older or less powerful than Nvidia’s GeForce GTX 1080 Ti or RTX 2070 Ti, or AMD’s Radeon RX 5700 XT.
You’ll also want nothing less powerful than an Intel Core i7 or AMD Ryzen 7 processor to make 4K gaming on your PC worthwhile.
When using the term “wireless charging,” it somehow seems like you will be able to charge your phone at any distance from the charging unit. It’s misleading but a necessary evil that provides a simpler terminology to understand. The reality is that “wireless charging” is actually magnetic induction charging.
Magnetic induction chargers, as the name implies, have a strong electromagnetic coil in the center that generates a field. The moment you place your device on a charging surface, the charger’s magnetic coil will turn on, and your device will charge by utilizing the magnetic field generated by it. The device’s end functions in reverse, taking the magnetic field and converting it into usable energy.
Please note that this is different from the magnetic charging cables found in some Mac models. These cables use magnets for attaching to their ports, but pass current from point A to point B through conduction, not induction. How Fast Does Your Phone Charge?
The speed of a phone’s charging cycle depends entirely on amperage and voltage. If you multiply both, you end up with the effective wattage in power being transferred from the charger to the phone. A 12-volt charger delivering 500 milliamps of nominal current will charge at 6 watts of nominal power. Phone battery capacity is measured in milliamp-hours (mAh). On the other hand, the average charger will show you how much voltage in direct current (DC) it will deliver, and at what amperage it will deliver it.
Typical wall chargers will deliver 1 amp of nominal current at 5 volts of tension. This charges a 3,000 mAh battery in roughly 3.6 hours. Most wireless chargers will also follow this guideline (5 volts of tension), but will lower the amperage slightly (the highest I’ve seen is 0.65 amps). Expect your phone to take longer to charge in this instance. To get a feel for how long your phone will take to charge on a wireless charger, check its amperage and compare it to the 1-amp nominal current delivered by the typical wall charger. There Are Other Devices That Use Induction Charging Is Hijacking Your Phone Through the Wireless Charger Possible?
You may have heard of cases in which people’s phones were hacked and information was stolen through the charger in a public place. A new concern is on the rise as more restaurants and other public venues are offering free wireless charging to individuals with smartphones. Can the same thing happen through this new kind of charger?
The answer (so far) is a resounding “no.” The reason why wired charging stations were able to steal information was because it relied on the phone’s USB port (all five wires). This allowed some charging stations to act as a computer that would interact with the phone. With wireless charging, the induction coils have only one purpose: Turn on the magnet so the phone can chug some juice.
Of course, that all may change if phone manufacturers decide to allow their devices to use wireless chargers as information exchange points. When that time comes, this will become a legitimate concern.

The ChatGPT platform has sparked concerns regarding data privacy and security. While the developers trained the model on publicly available text, the chatbot also learns from user conversations. To safeguard privacy, users can control how their data is used by disabling the Chat History & Training toggle switch in the Data Controls section of the Settings menu. However, it’s important to note that OpenAI didn’t ask for permission to use users’ data, which raises privacy concerns. A position paper by the Cloud Security Alliance provides an analysis of how ChatGPT can benefit cybersecurity, how it can benefit malicious attackers, how it might be attacked directly, and guidelines for responsible usage. It’s important for users to be cautious about what they share with ChatGPT and to be aware of the potential risks involved.

In April 2023, Xiaomi Mi Pad 3 came to life and as usual with Xiaomi devices, this one came with top of the line hardware but priced affordably. Although it’s past the expected release cycle and fans of the Mi Pad 3, which we reviewed and turned out to be a great slate, are obviously looking out for the tablet’s successor, the Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 is finally here.
Over the recent past, details of the Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 have been showing up from various sources on the internet. To cast away any doubts, Xiaomi even confirmed that it would be launching the Mi Pad 4 on June 25 and indeed, the Chinese OEM did the honors of taking the wraps off the slate at an event in its home country. This essentially did away with any rumors and uncertainties over the tablet’s specs, features, and price, details of which we have in this post.
Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 specs
8-inch 16:10 FHD (1920 x 1200) LCD display
Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor
3GB or 4GB RAM
32GB or 64GB storage
13MP main camera
5MP front camera
Android Oreo with EMUI 9, MIUI 10 download available
Extras: Bluetooth 5.0, USB-C, 3.5mm audio jack, Fast battery charging, AI facial recognition, LTE, etc.
With the popularity of tablets fading each passing day, there isn’t much hype surrounding the Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 tablet launch. Still, the Mi Pad 4, like many other Xiaomi devices, is hard to go unnoticed.
As you can see from the specs list above, the Mi Pad 4 is offering the same screen size as its predecessor, but there’s a switch to a new form factor of 16:10, thus resulting in a display resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels. The slate itself looks more compact than its predecessor, but you are getting a device that is equally tall and slightly thicker, yet it packs a smaller 6000mAh battery unit compared to the 6600mAh unit used in the Mi Pad 3.
However, what many fans will enjoy is the raw power that is promised by the impressive Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor that is backed by either 3GB or 4GB of RAM alongside two storage options of either 32GB or 64GB. Like many devices coming out this 2023, the Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 also gets a slice of the massive AI cake by shipping with an AI-driven Face Unlock feature, meaning it is the first in the Mi Pad series to support facial recognition. On the contrary, you don’t get a fingerprint scanner, but you can always turn to passcodes for security purposes if you don’t really trust face unlock.

On the memory front, Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 already boasts two variants, but there’s also another separator – network connectivity. The Mi Pad 4 gets two connectivity options, just as it was expected: LTE and Wi-Fi-only variants, but the company is clear that the support for LTE services will depend on whether your carrier supports the available bands.
The Mi Pad 4 also comes with a 3.5mm audio jack alongside the new USB Type-C port for data transfer and charging. Speaking of which, you are also getting support for fast charging technology so that you don’t have to wait for hours before filling up the huge 6000mAh battery unit on board.
These are the little additions that should make buying the Mi Pad 4 feel like a great decision.
Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 price and availability
Speaking of buying, the price of the Xiaomi Mi Pad 4 will even make you more excited about this slate. In China, the base model of 3GB RAM and 32GB storage goes for just CNY 1,099, which is about $170. For the 4GB RAM and 64GB storage variant, you need CNY 1,399 or approximately $215. For those eying the LTE variant, you’ll need to part with just CNY 1,499, which translates to about $230.
Europe, India and other parts of Asia are high on the list of markets that will get a chance to buy the Mi Pad 4, but pricing details and the exact release dates in these markets are still unknown.
It’s worth noting that the Xiaomi Mi Pad 3 launched in China priced at CNY 1,499 but with the Mi Pad 4, Xiaomi is looking to offer more for less, which has been the company’s way of doing things all this time.
