LG Optimus G vs the quad-core competition
LG has just officially announced their all new Optimus G superphone in Korea complete with a brand new 4.7-inch TrueHD IPS+ display and a powerful quad-core processor that is the first of its kind. The first thing that came to our mind was how the Galaxy S III, HTC One X, and others will fair against this new beast so lets break it down.
Since the LG Optimus G is the newest to join the pack lets take a loot at its specs first. LG’s calling this smartphone their new flagship device full of “groundbreaking features.” They’ve improved their display technology that brings the TrueHD IPS+ 1280 x 768 resolution 4.7-inch display closer to the glass for an in your face vivid and colorful experience, and added Qualcomm’s latest and greatest 1.5 GHz quad-core Snapdragon S4 Pro for absolute power. This is the first device powered by Qualcomm’s new S4 Pro “krait” processor and we have high hopes for it considering how well it performed on the developer tablet.
LG’s tossed in 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage, and a massive 13 megapixel camera on the rear for what they’re claiming will be the best smartphone camera in the world. Just reading off that initial spec list this smartphone is clearly near the top spot. On the back is a unique battery cover with LG’s own patented Crystal Reflection process, which gives a 3D illusion that makes it a beauty to hold — according to LG. This covers the 2,100 mAh battery under the hood that will be powering Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.
So how does this fair against the competition? Pretty darn good. Nothing can compete with this except for the Samsung Galaxy S III and maybe, just maybe the HTC One X. The original dual-core S4 processor held its own against the Tegra 3-touting HTC One X and it’s 4.7-inch SLCD display — so it’s safe to say this quad-core version should outpace the One X in all areas. Add in the thinner design, larger battery, and better camera on the Optimus G there really isn’t a need for discussion.
So that leaves us with the Galaxy S III, the current flagship and talk of the Android atmosphere — if you don’t count the Galaxy Note II. This is where things get a little interesting because the Galaxy S III competes with or beats the Optimus G in all hardware areas except the camera. Samsung’s flagship phone rocks their own in-house Exynos 4 Quad 1.4 GHz processor that performs extremely well, while their US Galaxy S III is powered by Qualcomm’s 1.5 GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4. The Optimus G has that same Snapdragon S4 only its been doubled and is the quad-core Pro version. This makes for truly a one-of-a-kind smartphone with unparalleled power.
The Galaxy S III has a slightly larger 4.8-inch (1280x720p) resolution display while LG’s is 4.7-inches and offers a slightly higher pixel density coming in at 1280×768. Samsung’s AMOLED tech has always looked great but so does LG’s IPS+ displays with stunning viewing angles and deep, rich colors. It’s tough to really say what is best or will continue to be the best at the moment especially with Samsung already having a clear lead in the market with 20 million sales strong. Until we get more time with the all new LG Optimus G we’ll have to leave it to you guys to decide and debate.

LG Thrill 4G
The LG Thrill 4G will be exclusive to AT&T customers and reach AT&T stores in the coming months. Running the first dual-core, dual-channel 1 GHz processor in the U.S. and based on the Android 2.2 platform, LG Thrill 4G will be among the first to deliver a glasses-free 3D experience to U.S. customers and will allow users to shoot 3D video and 3D stills with the dual 5-megapixel stereoscopic camera. It’s difficult to be entirely prescriptive without fully testing the LG G3, but this much we can say: both the iPhone 5s and the LG G3 are great handsets, and they will cost around the same, with the LG being a bit cheaper. They are fast and well built. On the one hand the LG G3 definitely has the better display, but the iPhone 5s is smaller and easier to operate with one hand. Ultimately your decision will be personal. LG G3 vs iPhone 5s comparison review: Design and buildThe iPhone 5S remains at the pinnacle of precision, metal engineering. LG has applied a metal-effect skin to the LG G3’s rear for a touch of class, but it is not actually metal so the LG G3 is not as nice in design as the metal iPhone 5s. It is sufficiently stylish for a high-end smartphone. The rear cover of the LG G3 is removable, allowing you to access the also removable battery and microSDXC slot. One up over the iPhone.
But the iPhone is smaller and lighter. The LG G3 is just 8.9mm – pretty thin by any measurement, especially considering the extra tech that is squeezed in. At 75 x 146mm in size, the G3 is a large phone due to its bigger screen size compared to its predecessor and other flagship devices. The LG G3 is a similar size to the Sony Xperia Z2 which has a smaller screen so while this is more impressive work from LG including tiny bezels, it will be a drawback for a lot of users. We find the Z2 somewhat unwieldy and the G3 is in that same category even though LG says the ‘floating ark’ shape makes it easy to use the phone one-handed.
It’s no surprise that the LG G3 has gained some weight considering its overall size but not much at all, 149g up from 143g. More impressive design work from LG. But if it is thin and light you want the iPhone remains the one to get. With one caveat: you will almost certainly want to put your delicate iPhone 5s in a case. The LG G3 feels big enough and ugly enough to look after itself.
Both handsets offer colourful option. For the iPhone 5S Apple introduced a new gilt-free option it’s calling Gold – gold-effect back and edges with white glass trim. There’s the Silver option resembling last year’s white/silver iPhone 5. And the most sober of three, and the only one approaching decent availability at launch, is the black and grey model, dubbed Space Grey. It’s like the original black iPhone 5, only with a lighter shade of graphite to its back and edges.
Neither the LG G3 nor the iPhne 5s comes with any dust- or waterproof credentials. This may or may not be an important feature to you. We like the way both of these handsets are designed and built. Given the choise we’d go for the bigger but more robust feeling LG G3, but that is a subjective view. LG G3 vs iPhone 5s comparison review: DisplayThe screen is a key difference between this pair, and LG really knows what it’s doing in this department. Apple’s iPhone 5S still has a 4in display, in a 10:9 aspect ration. You get a resolution of 640 x 1136 pixels, which makes for a pixel density of 326 ppi. It is a more-than decent screen – one that until 18 months ago would have beaten out all comers. However, compared to the larger, Full HD displays of the iPhone 5S’s rivals, the screen is starting to feel cramped.
On the LG G3, however, LG has managed to squeeze a 5.5in screen into a chassis barely larger than the screen itself. Not only is the LG G3’s screen much larger than that of the iPhone 5s, at 5.5in versus 4in the resolution is also Quad- rather than full-HD. Indeed, the LG G3 has a staggeringly high pixel density of 534ppi. The LG G3’s really is a brilliant, brilliant screen.

LG G3 vs iPhone 5s comparison review: Hardware and performanceThe LG G3 sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, clocked at 2.5GHz. Living up to its name, the G3 has 3GB of RAM but only if you buy the 32GB, the 16GB model has 2GB. (The software is designed for 2GB to the extra on the 32GB device gives headroom.)
It’s unsurprising that performance is smooth and nippy. We haven’t fully tested the LG G3 yet, but it is certainly a powerful and fast performer. As, of course, is the iPhone 5s – despite nominally inferior hardware.
The iPhone 5S has a 64-bit A7 processor running at 1.2- to 1.3GHz. It’s a dual-core Cyclone processor paired with 1GB of DDR3 RAM. We’ve never found the iPhone to have any major performance issues, and Apple says it’s twice as fast as the previous model in both CPU and graphics performance. But that hardware is no match for that of the LG G3. Remember that the feel of performance is as much software- as hardware related.
On the iPhone 5S the A7 makes iOS 7 buttery smooth. There’s nary a judder or stutter when swiping between home screens, or exiting an app and watching your icons fly into place. Apps launch and web pages load faster than ever: the iPhone 5S is simply a joy to use.

LG G3 vs iPhone 5s comparison review: StorageThe LG G3 comes in 16GB and 32GB flavours, and employs support for microSDXC, allowing you to add an extra 128GB of storage. The iPhone 5s offers greater onboard storage options of 16GB, 32GB or 64GB. But it allows for no expandable storage. You’ll see the significance of this when we get to the UK price section. Suffice to say that storage is critical in smartphones, and we’d rather get a 32GB LG G3 and whack in a 128GB expansion card than shell out more than £700 on a 64GB iPhone. But SD cards can lead to marginal drops in performance, so your view may differ.
LG G3 vs iPhone 5s comparison review: Battery lifeAlthough the LG G3 has a larger-capacity 3,000mAh battery, it also has a larger, higher-resolution screen that you can expect to quickly drain the battery. However, LG claims it has tackled this issue on three fronts: through adaptive framerates, adaptive clocking and adaptive timing control. We won’t know until we’ve spent some more time with the G3 whether LG has been able to sidestep the screen issue in this manner, but we are pleased to find the LG G3 supports wireless charging, and that its battery is removable – if you wanted, you could carry a spare.
The 5S has a 5.92Wh battery, which if you care about details is 8.6 percent more capacity than the iPhone 5. As ever, it’s a built-in, non-swappable lithium-ion battery. Apple says the iPhone 5S will last for up to 250 hours on standby, and 10 hours of talk time. Web surfing is 8 hours on 3G, and 10 hours on LTE and Wi-Fi. Apple claims 10 hours for video playback and 40 hours audio playback, for the iPhone 5S.
Such figures are usually taken with a pinch of salt, but Apple’s claims are typically close to the mark. In our video-looping test, the 5S lasted an impressive 11 hours, which compares well with an iPhone 5 (running iOS 7) which managed just shy of nine-and-three-quarter hours, and a Samsung Galaxy S4 which could manage only seven hours.
Bearing in mind the LG G3’s bigger screen, and the iPhone 5s’ exceptional performance in this regard we the iPhone to be the winner. But we have to give credit to the LG G3 because its battery can be removed and replaced. A very marginal nod to iPhone, with the rider that battery life is pretty evenly matched. LG G3 vs iPhone 5s comparison review: CamerasThe resolution of the G3 remains at 13Mp compared to the G2 but there are a number of improvements which have been added. For starters there’s a dual-LED flash which should come in handy in low light situations.
Importantly, the 5S no longer uses an upscaled 4Mp mode in very low light as the iPhone 5 does, and photos taken in dark conditions have much less noise. In good light, you won’t see a huge difference between images from the two iPhones, but at night, the 5S does a better job.
Neither of these cameras will replace your DSLR. Both are fine quality smartphone cameras. We’ll call it a draw as this is at least in part a subjective decision.

Design
The G5 is a huge departure from how LG usually designs smartphones. The slightly curved screen, rear-mounted volume keys and removable back plate has gone by the wayside in favor of an all-metal build. The device looks much more premium than the G4 and the G3, and we’re extremely satisfied with the way it feels in the hand. And just because LG employed an all-metal chassis this time around, that doesn’t mean you can no longer remove the battery. Thanks to the new modular design, you can remove the battery by sliding out the bottom portion of the phone. This also makes room for other modules and peripherals, but we’ll get into that later.
On the other hand the Moto X Style is also premium, but in different ways. It features an aluminum frame with either leather, wood or a rubberized back plate. It also comes with metal accents for the volume keys, power button and rear camera module. All of this can be customized via Moto Maker, Motorola’s online customization shop. All in all the Moto X Style looks just like every other Motorola smartphone from recent years, only with a much more refined design.
DisplayLG decided to shrink down the display this year, going with a smaller 5.3-inch display as opposed to the 5.5-inch screens found on the G4 and G3. The company says this is a “sweet spot” in terms of screen size for most users. The G5 sports an IPS Quantum Display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 and a 554 pixel density. The Moto X Style on the other hand is quite a bit bigger. It has a 5.7-inch IPS LCD display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 and a pixel density of 520ppi. Both displays look very good, but the fact that LG and Motorola forwent AMOLED panels this year is puzzling.
The G5 comes with new always-on display capabilities that allow the device to show the time, notifications and a few other things without having to wake the phone. It’s a handy feature to have, but it might have been better optimized on an AMOLED display. The Moto X Style also has a feature similar to this called Moto Display, which shows up when you have a notification, when you pick up the phone or when you wave your hand over the screen. With Moto Display you can interact with notifications, while LG’s version of this feature just shows you information and doesn’t let you interact with it.

CamerasThe Moto X Style has a 21MP rear-facing camera with an f/2.0 aperture and a 1.1µm pixel size, which performs very well in most lighting conditions. One of the biggest caveats with the Moto X’s camera is its camera application, which is a bit too simple and makes changing modes more difficult than it needs to be. Of course, this can always be alleviated by installing a third-party camera app.
LG decided to do something a little different this year and include an 8MP wide-angle lens to accompany the primary 16MP lens on the back. We aren’t going to get too far into camera quality with the G5 since we’ve only had the device for a couple days, but we can tell you that the camera app is fast and reliable thus far. Having a wide-angle lens on the back is really convenient, and the camera software makes it easy to switch between the two rear camera sensors.

SoftwareBoth the Moto X Style and LG G5 are running the latest version of Android, though on the surface these two smartphones have very different interfaces. The Moto X Style’s UI is just about as bare bones as you can get. Motorola has thrown in a few of its own software enhancements, but not much in terms of changing the interface in any drastic way. And because the Moto X doesn’t have too many things added on, Motorola is able to push out software updates much more quickly than most other manufacturers with software overlays.

One thing you’ll notice about the G5’s software is that LG is doing its best to make the whole interface less bloated. LG removed Q Slide and dual window from its software overlay, and the settings menu has been reorganized and redesigned. Also, there’s no app drawer. While Samsung is giving users the option to remove the app drawer on the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge, LG has removed it altogether. We have no official information as of yet, though a few of our sources have told us that Google will be removing the app drawer in Android N, so it looks like LG may be getting a head start on this change.
