Suggested January 2024 Ipad Air Has Igzo Screen, Display Expert Claims
At the same time, it hasn’t gone unnoticed that the iPad Air achieves the same 10-hour battery life (and 24-hour LTE hotspot performance) in spite of packing in a powerful 64-bit A7 processor and, more importantly, a much smaller battery than its predecessor, 32.9 Whr versus 43 Whr for the iPad 4.
Now, one of the benefits of using IGZO display technologies is vastly reduced power consumption. So, has Apple switched to IGZO panels for the iPad Air or not?
To find that out, Eric Slivka of MacRumors spoke to one guy who knows these things inside out, Dr. Ray Soneira of DisplayMate Technologies.
In addition to rendering deeper blacks, more vibrant colors and providing an all-around sharper image on ultra-high resolution displays, IGZO panels are said to consume only a fraction of the power versus the traditional LCD technology, as in about ten percent of the LCD’s power draw.
Also, bear in mind the display is by and large the iPad’s most power-hungry component.
Therefore, had Apple kept the traditional LCD around, it could only have gotten away using the smaller battery for the iPad Air while maintaining the ten-hour battery life by switching to a much more power-efficient screen.
Enter IGZO, which allows for the iPad Air’s brighter image with higher contrast and less refractions. Here’s a passage from Soneira’s display shootout comparing the iPad Air’s display to that of the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 and the Google Nexus 10 (emphasis mine):
The most important under the hood display improvement is the switch from a-Si amorphous Silicon LCDs up to a much higher performance IGZO LCD backplane.
Even more to the point, an IHS iSuppli teardown analysis has revealed that the iPad Air uses fewer LEDs versus its predecessor. These power-hungry modules provide the backlighting for the screen and the iPad Air achieves the same level of brightness with just 36 LED lights versus 84, or less than half the LEDs than the iPad 3.
Soneira expects Apple will adopt IGZO panels for the upcoming iPad mini with Retina display, even more so given its higher pixel density on the 40 percent smaller canvas. Put simply, an a-Si screen would be infeasible for a Retina display at that size.
For the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9’s better-than-iPad-Air-screen, Amazon utilizes the more complicated – but also better performing and more power-savvy – low temperature polysilicon (LTPS) technology.
That tech, Soneira cautioned, doesn’t scale well to support Apple’s volume requirements that now approach a hundred million tablet panels on an annual basis.
IGZO also offers a more natural transition for display manufacturers, as they can in many cases simply upgrade their existing equipment from current a-Si production, while moving to LTPS would require a complete change in production.
IGZO is also just the first of a number of metal oxide semiconductors that show promise for improved display performance, pointing to solid opportunities for the technology to continue to evolve.
Before wrapping up, Apple says it has managed to achieve the iPad Air’s 24 percent reduction in overall volume by shaving fractions of millimeters off many components: the cover glass is 17 percent thinner, the touch sensor is as much as 70 percent thinner, with the Retina display itself having shaved of 20 percent off its overall thickness.
And if you believe the rumors based on supply chain chatter, apparently Sharp has finally managed to commercialize mass-production of IGZO panels for smartphones and will begin churning them out at its Kameyama Plant Number 2 before the end of 2013.
Who wants an iPhone 6 with an IGZO screen?

Apple’s Iphone 5 Has Larger Screen And Lte Netwoking
Apple’s iPhone 5 has a larger screen than its predecessors and support for high-speed LTE wireless networks, the company said Wednesday at a launch event.
All of its phones so far have had 3.5-inch screens, but the iPhone 5 has a 4-inch display, Apple CEO Tim Cook said at the event in San Francisco, according to Macworld’s live blog.
That may reflect the popularity of larger devices offered by Samsung and other rivals, and it gives more real estate for apps and games. It also allows Apple to add an extra row of application icons on each page.
Despite the bigger screen, Apple said its new phone is its thinnest and lightest yet. It weighs 22 grams — 20 percent lighter than the iPhone 4S — and is 7.6 mm thick, or 18 percent thinner, it said.
It comes in black or white and the prices are the same as for the 4S — US$199 for 16GB, $299 for 32GB, and $399 for 64GB, along with a 2-year carrier contract. The new phone can be ordered beginning Friday and the device will ship a week later in the U.S., U.K., Japan and other countries.
The iPhone 5 gets a speedy new chip, the A6, which marketing chief Phil Schiller said doubles the speed of both CPU and graphics operations over the A5. Operations like launching apps and viewing attachments will be twice as fast, he said.
He showed “Real Racing 3” and claimed the new phone offers “console level graphics”
The new phone also has faster wireless, including the addition of LTE wireless, which is also coming to Amazon’s new Kindle. LTE offers a theoretical maximum download speed of 100Mbps, Cook said.
A big change is a new connector to replace the pin socket used since the first iPhone. Called Lightening, the new connector is faster, but it means users who want to plug the iPhone 5 into an older accessory, such as a speaker dock, will need to use an adapter.
The bigger display size also creates a slight hiccup: Existing apps now have to run with a black border around them to fill the screen.
But the new display offers several benefits too, besides being larger. It has a retina display of 326 pixels per inch and 1136-by-640 resolution, and it’s “stunning,” according to Schiller. It provides 44 percent more color saturation and the touch sensors are integrated into the display itself, making it 30 percent thinner and giving a sharper image with less glare in sunlight, Schiller said
The device also includes a new technology, wideband audio, that’s intended to make voice calls sound more natural.
And the new phone gets a new OS, iOS 6. It has better mapping, with turn-by-turn directions and sharper satellite imagery. The Safari browser will have full-screen mode, among many other improvements.
An upgraded camera has an 8-megapixel sensor with a five-element lens and a faster f/2.4 aperture, which should give better low-light photography. A “sapphire” cover protects the lens and gives sharper pictures.
The new iPhone adds 1080p video with better image stabilization and the ability to capture stills while recording video.
The iPhone 5 also betters the battery life of the iPhone 4S, according to Schiller, with eight hours of 3G or LTE talk tie or browsing and 10 hours of Wi-Fi browsing.
It also has better Wi-Fi, according to Schiller, including dual channel 5GHz 802.11n that gives bandwidth up to 150M bps.
The phone has a single baseband chip for voice and data, and a single radio chip, all of which helps reduce its size and weight.
Twenty carriers will support the new phone at launch, including Orange and Deutsche Telekom. Apple is working with AT&T, Verizon and Sprint to offer service in the U.S., and with other providers in Asia, Australia, the U.K. and Germany.
Apple is also expected to announce new iPad’s as the Wednesday event progresses.
The iPhone 5 launch comes as Apple fights to recover its dominance in the smartphone sector. Rival Samsung shipped nearly twice as many smarthones as Apple in the second quarter, as Apple buyers held off making purchases pending today’s launch, according to iSuppli in July.
Apple won a massive patent infringement court case against Samsung in the U.S. in August. Samsung must pay Apple around $1 billion in damages and make changes to some of its phones in order to keep selling them in the U.S.

The Dissection: Air Pressure Gauge
You’ve almost certainly seen a pressure gauge somewhere: on an air compressor, a steam boiler or perhaps an automotive vacuum gauge. Have you thought much about how that gauge works? Magic? Elves? We’ll rip one open to find out.
Anyone who has been reading my posts will have surmised that I like clever mechanisms. The Bourdon tube, which is the source of the pressure gauge’s magic, certainly qualifies.
Bourdon Tube
The Bourdon Tube (pictured here in black wrapped around the circumference of the gauge) is what makes the magic happen. As the inside of the tube is pressurized, it straightens out slightly, pulling on the mechanical linkage that moves the needle on the face of the gauge.
The operation is simple. One end of the curled metal tube is sealed and the other is connected to the source of the pressure to be measured. As that pressure increases, the tube expands and straightens very slightly, as if being inflated, which, essentially, it is. As it straightens, the sealed end moves and pulls on the attached mechanical linkage of gears and levers.
Air Pressure Gauge Linkage
As the Bourdon tube extends, it pulls on this mechanical linkage, which rotates the needle on the face of the gauge.
Through that gear train, the slight movement of the tube is translated into rotation of the indicator needle. The tube, gear train and gauge face are sized and calibrated such that the amount of tube movement for a given applied pressure will move the needle to indicate that same pressure on the face of the gauge.
Simple and clever. Almost like magic.
