Suggested March 2024 How To Take A Screenshot On Any Device

This story has been updated. It was originally published on February 21, 2023.

There are lots of reasons why you might want to take a screenshot on your computer or phone: to prove you finally completed that video game, to record a website layout for safe keeping, or even to make some desktop wallpaper from your favorite movie. Whatever the reason, here’s how to get it done on all the major platforms, whether it’s Windows, macOS, Android, or iOS.

How to take a screenshot on Windows

Ah, the old Windows Snipping Tool. You may still have it, but it will soon be replaced by Snip & Sketch. David Nield

On Windows, a simple tap on the PrtScn (print screen) button will copy a shot of the desktop to the clipboard, and you can then paste it into an image editor.

There are other keyboard shortcuts to know about which make use of the Windows key (if your keyboard has one): press Windows+PrtScn and the shot will be automatically saved into a Screenshots folder within your account’s Pictures folder. Meanwhile Alt+PrtScn will grab only the currently active window and copy it to the clipboard.

You can get help from various utilities too. Locate the new and improved Snipping Tool (now Snip & Sketch) on your computer—you can search for it from the taskbar or hit Win+Shift+S to summon a simplified version of it. Use the crosshair tool to select an area on your screen, and the moment you let go of the left mouse button, Windows will add the screenshot in your clipboard. Use the buttons at the top of your screen for more options—the Freeform Snip button (second to the right), allows you to make selections in any shape you want; the Window Snip button adds a screenshot of the current open window to your clipboard; and finally, the Fullscreen Snip takes a picture of your entire screen and saves it to the clipboard. You won’t get some of Snip & Sketch’s features—such as time delay—when you summon the tool with the keyboard shortcut, but if you search for the program, you’ll be able to take screenshots with 3 and 10 second delays, annotate pictures, crop them and even measure them. Alternatively, you can use the Game DVR tool in the Xbox app that comes with Windows 10 to capture grabs from games.

If you need even more options and features, consider tools such as Dropbox (free) and Snagit ($50).

How to take a screenshot on macOS

We heard you liked screenshots, so we took a screenshot of a screenshot. John Kennedy

Apple keyboards don’t have a PrtScn key—or, of course, a Windows key—so the shortcuts are completely different. Ctrl+Shift+Cmd+3 copies the current screen contents to the clipboard, or you can drop the Ctrl part to save a PNG file directly to the desktop.

If you just want to capture part of the screen and send it to the clipboard for subsequent pasting, use Ctrl+Shift+Cmd+4. Then drag the mouse to outline an area of the screen or press the spacebar to capture a particular window. As before, leave out the Ctrl button and the image will be saved to your desktop rather than copied to the clipboard.

As on Windows, there are numerous utilities that will help you in your screen-grabbing endeavors. Screenshot is a handy app you’ll find built right into macOS (just type “screenshot” into your computer’s Spotlight Search bar), Dropbox has its own screenshot feature, and Lightshot Screenshot (free) and SnapNDrag ($10) give you a few more options in terms of annotations and customizations.

How to take a screenshot on Android phones and tablets

Sometimes, you just need to remember what day it is. David Nield

On the majority of Android devices, you can press the volume down button and the power button together to take a screenshot. The screen should flash, and you’ll see a notification that a grab has been captured (tap this notification if you want to share or edit the image). If you need to find the screenshot afterward, it’ll be in your device’s Photos app. If you have Google Photos, tap on Library in the bottom right corner of your screen, then choose the Screenshots folder under Photos on device. You can also go straight to the Files app, tap on Images, and then touch Screenshots at the top of your screen.

That said, Android devices come with all kinds of manufacturer-made software skins running on them, so the shortcut might be slightly different depending on the make and model of your phone. Still, most manufacturer’s have adopted the same key combo—on both Samsung Galaxy and HTC phones, for example, just press the power and volume down buttons simultaneously to take a grab. If you want to go hands-free, just engage the Google Assistant and ask it to take a screenshot for you.

Do you take a million accidental screenshots on your iPhone, or is it just us? David Nield

While Android runs on phones and tablets made by multiple manufacturers, Apple makes all of its iOS and iPadOS devices, so these gadgets don’t require multiple shortcuts. The button combination for your model is guaranteed to work.

On Windows, you can use an AirPlay client such as LonelyScreen or Mirroring360, then broadcast the iPhone or iPad screen to your laptop or desktop using the AirPlay feature built into Apple’s operating system. To do so, swipe down from the top right corner (or up from the bottom of the screen on some devices) to open the Control Center, then tap on Screen Mirroring to get connected.

How To Take A Screenshot On Pixel 7 And Pixel 7 Pro

You may not think about it, but one of the most common features of a smartphone is the ability to take a screenshot. Over the years, the methods for taking these screenshots has changed for various reasons. Whether it’s because of the addition (or subtraction) of buttons, or new software features, the methods for taking a screenshot has changed.

How to Take a Screenshot on Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro

This trend continues with Google’s latest flagship smartphone, however, you won’t need to jump through a bunch of hoops if you want to take a screenshot on Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. The first option for taking a screenshot is the tried and true method that relies on your phone’s hardware buttons.

Navigate to the screen that you want to take a screenshot of.

Press the Power and Volume Down buttons at the same time.

Your phone’s screen will flash.

Once you have successfully taken a screenshot on Pixel 7 or Pixel 7 Pro, a preview appears in the bottom left corner. You can swipe this away and have it sent straight to the Screenshots folder within Google Photos. Or, you can tap the screenshot preview to make any edits or share it using any of the apps installed on your phone.

How to Take a Scrolling Screenshot on Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro

Another feature that has been available with some Android phones, but only recently made its way to Google’s flavor of Android is the ability to take a “scrolling screenshot”. This essentially allows you to capture more content from a page or an app, that isn’t actually visible without scrolling up or down.

Navigate to the screen that you want to take a screenshot of.

Press the Power and Volume Down buttons at the same time.

Your phone’s screen will flash.

When the screenshot preview appears in the bottom left corner, so will an extended menu. This was introduced with Android 12, and is also available on Android 13, giving users a few more options if they want to take a screenshot on Pixel 7.

From the extended menu next to your screenshot preview, tap the Capture more button.

Use the on-screen crop guidelines to capture additional content for your screenshot.

This might come in handy if you need to share a long thread of messages, or want to share a larger (or longer) graphic from your Pixel 7. Once you have finished “capturing more” in the screenshot, tap the Save button in the top left corner if you want to save it to your gallery, or you can tap the Share icon in the top right to share it instantly.

Take a Screenshot on Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro Without Buttons

Google is constantly making changes and improvements to its flavor of Android, providing users with plenty of alternative methods to perform various tasks. This includes being able to take a screenshot on Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, as you can do so without using any of your device’s hardware buttons. Instead, you can do so right from the App Switcher on your Pixel 7, regardless of whether you use gesture navigation or the traditional 3-button navigation.

Gesture Navigation:

Swipe up and hold from the bottom of your Pixel 7’s screen.

Scroll left or right until you find the app that you want to screenshot. Make sure that you don’t select the app from the multitasking menu.

Tap the Screenshot button at the bottom of the multitasking window.

3-button navigation:

Tap the Overview button in your navigation bar.

Scroll left or right until you find the app that you want to screenshot. Make sure that you don’t select the app from the multitasking menu.

Tap the Screenshot button at the bottom of the multitasking window.

Take a screenshot on Pixel 7 with Quick Tap

One of the more unique features that were introduced back in 2023, was the ability to perform various tasks using Quick Tap. Essentially, this allows you to assign a shortcut, then double-tap the back of your Pixel phone in order to perform and execute whatever you selected. This is one of those features that can be seen as an Accessibility improvement but can also be used if you want to a screenshot on Pixel 7.

Open the Settings app on your Pixel 7 or Pixel 7 Pro.

Scroll down and tap System.

Tap Gestures.

At the top of the page, tap Quick Tap to start actions.

Next to Use Quick Tap, tap the toggle to enable the feature.

Under the Tap back of phone twice to section, select Take screenshot.

If necessary, scroll down and toggle Require stronger taps to the On position.

If you are someone who uses a case with your Pixel 7 or Pixel 7 Pro, you might want to enable the Require stronger taps option. This just makes the feature a bit more sensitive, resulting in you being able to take a screenshot on Pixel 7 easier when using Quick Tap.

How To Get Pixel 2 Launcher On Any Android Device

The search giant Google has just launched their latest smartphones for 2023; the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL. I have been a fan of Pixel devices since they debuted last year, as they delivered the best, unadulterated Android experience. For me, the Pixel devices are as much about the software experience as they are about the hardware. I especially love what Google does with its Pixel Launcher, making Android even more easy and intuitive to use. With Pixel 2, the beloved Pixel Launcher is getting a major overhaul making it better than ever before. However, since Pixel phones are premium products, not many of us can afford to buy one. That’s why it’s sad that so many Android users won’t be able to experience the new Pixel Launcher. Well, that’s not entirely true. You might not get the original Pixel Launcher, but you can customise your Android phone to look and behave like one. In this article, we are going to show you, how you can do the same. So, if you ever thought, how can I get this new Pixel 2 Launcher, this is how you can:

Get Pixel 2 Launcher on Any Android Device

If you have ever followed our website in the past, you must know that we love Nova Launcher. Nova Launcher adds a ton of functionality and is always the first one to port features from newer versions of Android to older devices. In addition to porting these features, the Launcher also allows you to customise every aspect of its look and feel. Today, we are going to use Nova Launcher to show you, how you can customise your home screen to look and behave just like the Pixel 2 Launcher. This one is going to be a little longer than our usual how-tos, so follow along step by step to get the new Pixel 2 Launcher.

3. Now, just to make sure that everyone is on the same page, we will clear everything from the home screen, so we all have a clean slate to begin with. Just long press on the icons and remove them by one-by-one, till there’s nothing left on your home screen.

4. Now, let’s go into the “Nova settings” and make the necessary changes. First, long-press on the home screen and tap on “Settings”. Here is where we will make all the changes.

5. First, we will make sure that we have the same “swipe up to open the app drawer gesture” as it is on Pixel 2 Launcher. To do that, tap on “App & widget drawers” and then enable “Swipe to open” and disable the “Swipe indicator”. Now, go back to the main menu.

6. As you must have noticed, there are no “app labels” on the home screen of Pixel 2 Launcher. To achieve the clean look and remove the app labels, just tap on “Desktop” and then select “Icon layout”. Here, disable the “Label” option. Now your icon won’t have a label on the home screen.

8. We need to make one more change while we are in the Desktop settings, scroll down to find “Page indicator”, tap on it, and then select “None”.

9. Now, go back from Desktop to the main settings menu. Here, tap on “Dock”. Select “Dock Background” and then set the “Transparency” to a 100%.

10. That’s it, we are pretty much done with the Settings. Now go back to the home screen and long press on it. Here, select widgets and then find “Quick Search Bar” widget under the Nova Launcher and add it to your home screen.

11. Just long press on the widget and select the “Resize” option. Now, resize the widget to match the width of your screen.

13. Now just go back and drag the widget to the bottom of the display. Now, add your favourite app icons above the widget to make your home screen your own. Also, download the Pixel 2 wallpaper and set it as your default wallpaper to give your home screen an authentic Pixel 2 look.

14. There is one more thing left to do. we need to add that cool “At a glance widget” which shows you your calendar events, along with other information such as time and weather. To do that, first, download the “Business Calendar 2” application from the Play Store. Now, launch the app and quickly go through its setup process by just granting it required permissions and tapping on the next arrow.

16. Here, tap on the “Colors” menu and then set the opacity to 0%. Then hit on save. The widget won’t look exactly the same as the one on new Pixel phones, but it is very close to it. Moreover, it serves the function properly, as you can see in the pictures below.

Professional Video Editing Software: Adobe Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, PowerDirector, Movavi Video Editor Plus, Davinci Resolve Studio

Free Video Editing Software: iMovie (free for Mac, iPhone, & iPad), OpenShot, Shotcut, Kdenlive, Blender3D, VideoPad.

Online Video Editors: Flixier, Clideo, Kapwing.

Load or import your video. Most video editors will require you to load or import your video. Online video editors will require you to upload the video. You can usually find the option to import or load a video in the “File” menu.

Drag the video file into the timeline. The timeline is what you use the edit the video. It is usually at the bottom of the screen. Once you load or import a video, it will usually be added to your project library. Drag the video clip from your library to the timeline at the bottom of the screen.

Apply a sharp filter to your video. A sharp filter is typically found in the filters and effects menu. A sharp filter makes the video image appear crisper by identifying the edges in a video image and shrinking them. If your video editor includes an option to adjust sharpness, increase it for better quality.

Apply a blur, soften, or smooth filter. These effects can be found in the filters and effects menu of any video editing application and can be effective in removing unwanted artifacts such as graininess or scratches in analog video files. Experiment with these filters to determine which of them produces the best results. You will likely only need to apply a small amount.

Use color correction filters to adjust the color. Color correction filters, such as brightness, contrast, levels, hue, and saturation filter to improve the light, shadows, and color balance of a video file. Most video editing applications will contain these or similar features located in the effects and filters menu. Experiment by applying each separately to determine which combination of filters produces the best results.

Use noise reduction, or video denoising, to improve video quality. Video de-noising is a process by which analog ‘noise’, such as lines, dots, color degradation, and various other unwanted artifacts can be removed or diminished. The video denoising filter typically will be found in the effects and filters menu of the video editing application.

If your video editing software does not have a video stabilization tool, you can stabilize videos for free online.

Use de-interlacing options. Video interlacing is a process in which every other line of an image is scanned and alternated in each frame. Progressive scans that display each line in each frame produce better-quality images. Different de-interlace options work better for different video formats. The de-interlace options may be in the filters and effects menu, or it may be an option you select when you render or export a video.

Use a post-processing filter to automatically adjust the interpolation. Most video editing apps contain a post-processing tool typically found in or near the filters and effects menu. Locate and select the post-processing tool to improve video quality.

Render the video in MP4 format using the H.264 codec. When you are happy with the way your video looks, you can render it. The option to render or export a video is typically found under the File menu. When you render or export a video, you will be asked to choose a file format. The most common file format is MP4 using the H.264 codec.

How To Capture A Youtube Video Screenshot On Windows

Whether you want images for an article, need to share something interesting with a friend, or simply wish to save a memory for posterity, you might be searching for the best way to capture a YouTube video screenshot. Taking screenshots from a YouTube video can be done in a variety of ways, from the rudimentary to the most efficient. Let’s look at some of them in detail.

Tip: Need to share a YouTube clip? Learn how to share a specific part of a YouTube video.

1. Print Screen

The good old Print Screen function in Windows captures the entirety of your screen the moment you press the “Print Screen” button on your keyboard. This comes in handy as a simple way to get screenshots from YouTube videos as well.

Pause your YouTube video at the right moment and press PrtSc on your keyboard.

You can then paste the screenshot into a Paint window, inside a Word document, or any other location. Keep in mind, though, that this method of capturing YouTube screenshots will not get rid of the progress bar and other controls that appear whenever you pause your video. You’ll have to manually crop them out.

For generating screenshots without the overlay, you can try one of the other methods shown below.

2. Browser Extension

Having a screenshot functionality right in your browser feels like the obvious choice for taking YouTube screenshots. You can do this by installing a browser extension whether you’re using Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, or any other browser.

Microsoft Edge users can visit the Edge Add-ons store and those on Mozilla Firefox can head to the Firefox Browser Add-Ons store. You’ll be able to find similar extensions in each of these stores.

This method is much better than using the Print Screen functionality as doesn’t capture the YouTube player controls, giving you a clean and crisp screenshot.

Good to know: Check out the best Google Chrome extensions for productivity.

3. YouTube Screenshot Website

Another way of capturing YouTube screenshots is using a website dedicated to this purpose. There are several options you can use but YouTube Screenshots seems like the best choice due to its support for higher-resolution screenshots and an easy-to-use interface.

Visit YouTube Screenshots and paste the URL of the YouTube video in the input field at the top.

This screen allows you to select the frame you want to capture or simply download the video thumbnail.

This method takes a bit longer than using a browser extension but you get a few more features like forwarding or rewinding frames after selecting the frame of your choice. You also get the option of selecting the resolution of the image in case you want a smaller file size.

Tip: Having trouble finding copyright-free images? Here are the best sites to search for creative commons images.

4. Mozilla Firefox’s Native Snapshot

If you prefer Mozilla Firefox due to its privacy, speed, or features, you don’t need to look outside the browser’s built-in “Snapshot” feature. This nifty method lets you capture YouTube screenshots natively in your browser window. And you don’t need to worry about capturing any overlay either.

Open your YouTube video in a Firefox browser window and pause at the frame you want to capture.

You’ll now have a high-resolution screenshot of your desired frame. The pros of this method are the speed and higher image resolution, with the con being the inability to choose the image resolution.

Now if you prefer to have a dedicated screenshot tool installed on your PC, here are several screenshot programs for Windows that offer rich options.

Tip: Check out these Firefox add-ons to protect your online privacy.
