If you’re wondering how to set up a VPN on an Arris modem, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

But first, you should understand the difference between a modem and a router. A modem is a device in charge of connecting your home network with the public Internet.

Meanwhile, a router is responsible for making your home network’s devices talk to each other without having to use the public Internet.

It also forwards requests from the modem to the intended device in the intranet. A VPN can be installed on a router, not a modem.

All you need is an Arris modem that can connect with a router and a subscription with your preferred VPN compatible with routers.

How do I set up a VPN on my Arris router?

There is a wide range of VPN clients that you can install on your router. Even if they do not offer dedicated support for Arris specifically, you can flash your router and install a service that supports OpenVPN.

If you’re having VPN connection issues on your router, our guide shows how to effortlessly fix in.

What about Arris TG1672G VPN setup?

If you’re wondering how to config a VPN on an Arris TG1672G router, you can’t. Instead, you can turn it into a modem by putting it in bridge mode, purchasing a VPN router, and using it to connect to a VPN client.

For instance, if you have ExpressVPN, check out VPN routers that work with ExpressVPN and buy one to set up with your custom-made Arris modem.

This way, you don’t have to configure the Arris modem to allow VPN since you have to use the new router instead.

Why install a VPN on your Arris router?

You might be unsure about installing a VPN on your Arris router, especially if it means purchasing a VPN router because your current device doesn’t support VPN client connections.

Since your router is running all the time, it means that your VPN connection will always be up. In turn, it translates to continuous, uninterrupted online protection for all connected devices.

When installing a VPN on a router consider the following:

VPN account limits the number of simultaneous connections, it depends on each provider.

Some VPNs like Private Internet Access allow you to share the VPN account and stay connected to PIA’s servers at the same time.

A router can support unlimited connections since it’s considered a device that connects two or more packet-switched networks or subnetworks.

You don’t have to worry about IP or DNS leaks during Internet connection drops, which are typically covered by the VPN client’s kill switch.

Your Arris router will auto-connect to the VPN once the Internet connection is re-established.

What VPNs are compatible with the Arris router?

Developed by Kape Technologies, Private Internet Access (PIA) is the best VPN overall, and that’s why we used it in our Arris router VPN setup instructions.

You can also set up OpenVPN manual configuration mode if your device supports it since it’s more secure than PPTP.

Furthermore, PIA uses military-grade encryption to protect your data from hackers. It has exclusive DNS servers to secure your DNS requests.

And, if you stumble upon technical difficulties, you can turn to the 24/7 live chat support.

More about PIA:

Are there any downsides?

There are some minor inconveniences to using a VPN on your Arris router. For example, if you need to change the VPN server address, you have to access the router’s admin panel each time.

Plus, all devices will be connected to the same VPN server. If one person wants to unblock Netflix UK and another wants to unblock Netflix US, they can’t do this simultaneously because they’re bound to the same VPN server location.

In conclusion, it’s not challenging at all to set up a VPN on an Arris router. You just need a VPN router and a premium VPN subscription.

In just a few minutes, you will be able to share your VPN traffic with all nearby devices.

Your connection is not secure – websites you visit can find out your details:

How To Set Up A Diy Home Security System

We may earn revenue from the products available on this page and participate in affiliate programs. Learn more ›

You don’t have to invest in a multimillion dollar surveillance system to keep an eye on your property and possessions. In fact, you might be able to do the job with gadgets you already own, paired with free software. We’ve collected three types of systems you can pick from: free software on an old device, off-the-shelf cameras, or a DIY setup. Here’s how to assemble each option as quickly and easily as possible.

Repurpose your phones, tablets, and webcams

To turn your device into a security camera, first choose a location for it. If you’re using a phone or tablet, you might need to set up a custom mount for it to ensure the camera covers the right areas. Select a position where the device can plug into a power source and connect to your Wi-Fi network—you don’t want to lose the video stream suddenly because an old phone’s battery drained or its cell signal dropped. Next, if you’re turning a phone or tablet into a dedicated surveillance device, free up some room by removing any superfluous apps. The final step: Install a program that can transmit a live video feed to the web.

For example, the app Manything can do this job, and it’s free to use on a single device. You can check into the live stream from anywhere on the web, and get alerts whenever motion is detected in front of the lens. If you upgrade to a paid version of the app, Manything will let you save recordings to the cloud and install the program on multiple devices.

Manything

The Manything app can turn your phone or tablet into a home monitor.

Another app option, which works similarly to Manything, is Presence. Again, you set it up on your Android phone or iPhone, position the device where you want to see, and then log into your portal on the web to watch the video feed. Presence includes motion detection alerts for free, and if you upgrade to a premium account, you can store more video recordings in the cloud.

You can also use your computer’s webcam as a security camera. For Windows users, free iSpy software has you covered. It lets you set up multiple webcams, saves recordings and snapshots to the web, and can be configured to detect movement. You get a lot of ways to extend the service too, such as alerts sent over text and Twitter when you’re away from your desk.

Finally, you can even use the video chat program Skype as a simple security surveillance tool—though you probably should set up a separate Skype account just for this purpose. First, install Skype on any webcam-equipped computer in your home, and then set the app to answer incoming video calls automatically. You’ll find the setting under the Calls tab in the Options dialog box. Call your dedicated Skype account from any other computer or phone, and you’ll get a window into whatever’s happening at home.

Set up an off-the-shelf camera

Taking the most convenient option usually means paying the most money—and it’s the same story with home surveillance. If you want an out-of-the-box, off-the-shelf solution, then you’re going to have to put your hand in your pocket. What you might not know is that the latest security cameras are quick to set up, simple to operate, and packed with features. You can literally be up and running in minutes.

Nest Cam

Nest makes cameras for indoor and outdoor use.

Unlike the two Nest options, the Netgear Arlo works both indoors and out. It’s also battery powered, so you won’t need to trail any cables to or from the camera (although you will have to keep an eye on battery life). Netgear offers a generous free plan, with support for up to five cameras and the ability to keep seven days’ worth of recording in the cloud.

For a more all-around security solution, the Canary hub is worth a look. You can see and hear what’s happening in your home at any time, get motion detection alerts wherever you are, and even sound the alarm remotely if something looks amiss. For a simpler and less expensive Canary option, check out the Canary Flex. With both devices, you can pay a monthly subscription fee to Canary in order to get more cloud storage space for your surveillance videos.

Canary Flex

The Canary Flex, built to withstand the elements.

Like the Canary, the Piper NV camera streams high-quality video to wherever you’re checking in from. It also provides two-way audio and has excellent night vision. Buying the Piper sets you free from monthly contracts, as it includes all the cloud storage for free, letting you save and review your videos. The camera includes a backup battery too, so your home will stay safe even if the power goes out.

Build a DIY camera system

Of these three sections, the most difficult way to secure your home is to create your own home surveillance system. However, thanks to the latest in DIY technology, it’s easier than you might think—especially if you’re already a keen tinkerer. While the other options we’ve listed are more straightforward, this one is inexpensive, very customizable, and gives you the sense of satisfaction you get from doing a job yourself.

You’ve probably come across guides to using a Raspberry Pi to build a home security camera. For DIYers, this mini computer is a great way to control your surveillance setup. You can pick up a Raspberry Pi for under $40 at the time of writing. Once you’ve got the brains behind your system, all you need is the official camera module and a free app like MotionEye. Then it’s up to you to fashion the housing and configuration you want. For more detailed instructions, check out the many tutorials available online.

Raspberry Pi camera module

The Raspberry Pi camera module makes building your own security camera relatively straightforward.

The Arduino processor, like the Raspberry Pi, gives you a basic controller on a very small board. It will set you back less than $30. Again, you can tap into the collective knowledge of the web for detailed instructions on how to get your DIY home security camera up and running. With Arduino, the process isn’t quite as straightforward as it is with the Raspberry Pi, but the options for customization are virtually limitless.

Raspberry Pi and Arduino are the two main pieces of hardware that DIYers should look into. However, if you know your way around an electronics board, you can set up all kinds of custom camera configurations.

How To Set Up Nordvpn On Your Router

It also means devices that don’t support VPNs (such as games consoles, or media streamers such as the Apple TV) can get the benefits of unblocking, and all devices – such as smart speakers, security cameras and other smart home gadgets – get that extra layer of security and privacy.

Not all routers support VPN connections, so you’ll need to check first if your does. You can either check with the manufacturer – often your internet service provider – or simply log into the router itself and have a look through the menus for VPN settings.

However, even if it does support VPN connections, NordVPN no longer supports L2TP/IPsec and PPTP connections, so if your router only supports those protocols, you’re out of luck. Instead, you’re looking for OpenVPN support.

Specifically, it needs to support OpenVPN as a client (rather than a server, though if server support is present, that’s ok). The best way to find out if it does is to search online for the make and model of your router. If you discover your router has ‘pass-through’ support for OpenVPN, that’s no good: this merely allows connections from devices and won’t block them.

Which router should I use with NordVPN?

If your current router was supplied by your ISP, chances are that it won’t support OpenVPN. And don’t forget, some mesh routers may support OpenVPN, too, not just single, standalone routers.

You may have to buy a new router from those we recommend if your current one is incompatible, or you could head to FlashRouters and buy a router which has special software on it that works with a companion app. That app allows you to log in with your NordVPN details, and also to manage the VPN settings more easily than in a web browser. You can get 20% off using the code NORDVPNROUTER at the checkout.

There’s also a list of the routers which NordVPN recommends.

Note that Asus routers have a built-in OpenVPN client, which makes them ideal for NordVPN.

How to configure your router for NordVPN

The exact method of configuring your router to work with NordVPN will differ depending on the manufacturer and potentially even the model.

So while we can’t provide a definitive step-by-step guide for your specific router, here are the general steps you need to follow. Also, note that you can find instructions for various routers on NordVPN’s website.

First, log into your router. This involves typing its IP address into your web browser. Then, to change settings you will need to enter the admin password. That’s usually on a sticker somewhere on the router itself. For more help, read our guide which explains exactly how to connect to your router.

Be sure to find the VPN client settings, not the server settings. Here’s how it looks on an Asus router:

Now add a profile, which will include your NordVPN username and password. You can find these in your NordVPN dashboard.

If there’s an option, select ‘auto reconnection’, which will re-establish the VPN connection if it drops for any reason.

Enter a name for the connection. You can call it NordVPN [country], where country is the location of the server you’ve chosen.

Of course, you haven’t chosen a country yet, but you can use this link to find the server that NordVPN recommends. Or, if you have a specific country in mind (to get around regional blocks, say) then choose one from the drop-down menu under ‘Adjust server preferences’.

Download the OpenVPN config files because as part of creating the VPN profile, you’ll need at least one of these. Preferably, use the UDP one.

Once that’s done, you should be able to save the configuration.

Then, you should see an option to ‘activate’ that profile or connect to the VPN.

How to connect to a different NordVPN server

Unfortunately, if you’re creating these profiles manually, you’ll need to make one for each server you want to use. In many cases, that will just be a local for for the best speeds, and perhaps one in another country (such as the USA) so you can watch US Netflix, for example.

Again, once these profiles are created you can log into your router and activate the profile for the country you want to appear to be in.

If you’re not already a NordVPN customer, you’ll find the latest deals for the best prices on its website.

How To Set Up Voicemail On Samsung Galaxy Phones

1.4K

Voicemail is a useful feature present on most smartphones out there. It allows your caller to leave a voice message for you in case you are not available to pick up the phone at the moment. You can listen to these messages anywhere, anytime, as long as the phone is in the network coverage. Here’s a guide to setting up voicemail on Samsung Galaxy phones and also other Android smartphones.

Note: Voicemail feature is not available in all countries. It is available in the USA, for example. So do check with your service provider before trying to set up voicemail on your Android phone.

Setting up Voicemail on Samsung Galaxy Phones

We will begin the guide with Samsung. I am using A73 for this guide but the voicemail feature works the same on all Samsung phones.

1. Tap and open the Phone app at the bottom of your home screen. Tap on the kebab menu (three dots icon) in the top right corner of the Phone app to expand it.

2. From the available options, tap on Settings. Now tap on the Voicemail on the Call settings page to further open voicemail settings.

3. Once the Voicemail page is open, tap on the Voicemail number. A pop-up will appear. Enter the voicemail number given by your service provider and then tap on OK.

4. A message will appear on your screen saying Voicemail number changed. Tap on OK.

The voicemail has been successfully set up on your Samsung smartphone. Now go back to the Phone app and long press key 1 to access your voicemail whenever you want to listen to them.

Changing Voicemail Number on Samsung

Once a number has been set for your voicemail, you can also change it in case you have a new number, for example. Employees are often given work phones from the company.

1. Open Voicemail settings by following steps 1 and 2 above. Once the voicemail page is open, tap on the Voicemail number. A pop-up will open with the voicemail number you previously set. Replace that with the new number you want to set for the voicemail and tap OK to save changes.

2. A message on your screen will confirm that the voicemail number has been changed. Tap OK. And that’s how you change your voicemail number on your Samsung Galaxy smartphones.

Deleting/Removing Voicemail Number on Samsung Phones

If you no longer want to use voicemail, you can easily remove or delete the number saved to deactivate the voicemail on your phone.

1. Again navigate to Voicemail settings by following steps 1 and 2. Once the voicemail page is open, tap on the Voicemail number. A pop-up will open with the previously set voicemail number. Tap on Delete or backspace button to remove that number and tap OK to save changes.

2. You’ll get a message on your screen saying “Voicemail number changed”. Tap on OK. This means the voicemail number has been successfully removed. Now if you long press 1 on the keypad of your phone app, it will ask you to add a voicemail number.

Did you know there are more than 7 ways to answer incoming calls on Samsung Galaxy Phone?

Setting up Voicemail on other Android Smartphones

Android ecosystem is riddled with multiple OEMs with their own unique take on the UI and feature set. As such, voicemail may work differently in case you are not using Samsung’s Android phone. Let’s take a look.

1. Tap on and open the Phone app on your Android smartphone.

2. Once the Phone app is open, tap on the kebab menu (three dots) on the top right of the screen. Then tap on Settings. This will open the Phone app’s settings.

3. Tap on Voicemail, then tap on Advanced Settings to further open the settings for voicemail.

4. Tap on Setup, then tap on Voicemail number. A pop-up will appear in front of you.

5. Enter the Voicemail number provided by your service provider, then tap on OK. A message will confirm that the voicemail number has changed. Tap on OK.

Now the voicemail has been set up on your Android smartphone. To hear the voicemails, you just need to long press the key 1 from the dial pad to dial the voicemail number.

Changing/Deleting Voicemail Number on Android Smartphones

1. To Change the Voicemail number, please navigate to the Voicemail number setup page by following the above-mentioned steps 1 to 4 (Setting up Voicemail on other Android Smartphones).

2. Tap on the Voicemail number, delete the previously set number and replace that with the new voicemail number. Tap on OK to confirm.

3. You will get a message on your screen saying Voicemail number changed. Tap on OK.

Removing the voicemail number is pretty similar to changing one. So if you want to remove the voicemail number, just repeat the above steps 1 and 2 (Changing/Deleting Voicemail Number on other Android Smartphones). Instead of replacing the number, just delete it and tap on OK. It will say Voicemail number changed, and the voicemail number will be removed from the system.

Some Key Details

I hope this helped you set up voicemail on your Samsung/Android smartphone. While using voicemail service, the service provider plays an important role, so here are some important FAQs from popular service providers ⏤ Verizon and AT&T.

Using voicemails allows you to be available 24×7 and screen important calls, however, can prove to be a costly affair. Do check the rates before using voicemail service.

How To Set Up Apple Watch: An Easy Guide

As you might expect from Apple tech, it pairs pretty much seamlessly with an iPhone to give you an excellent wrist companion to your trusty Apple smartphone.

Set up out of the box is a doddle, but for those unsure, here’s how to set up your new Apple Watch.

Don’t worry if it’s not the latest generation of Apple Watch you’ve got either; these steps apply to every generation and model of Apple Watch.

How to set up a new Apple Watch

At a glance

Time to complete:

5 minutes

Tools required: Apple Watch & an iPhone

1.

Unbox, turn on and charge up

Henry Burrell / Foundry

Everyone loves a good unboxing, and Apple products are some of the most satisfying. Savour it!

Then toss all the packaging aside, and hold down the side button (not the rotating crown) until you see the Apple logo.

Then plug in the circular charger to a wall outlet and clip the Apple Watch onto the charger magnetically.

2.

Unlock your iPhone and hold your Apple Watch near it

Apple

Simply holding your powered-on Apple Watch and unlocked iPhone next to each other will bring up a window on your phone saying “Use your iPhone to set up this Apple Watch”. Tap Continue to begin the pairing process.

If this doesn’t pop up, tap Start Pairing on your Apple Watch instead to start the process, and remember to keep the iPhone and Apple Watch next to each other for the duration.

3.

Pair your Apple Watch with your iPhone

Apple

This is the coolest part of the setup process. A weird glowing orb will appear on your Apple Watch. There’s then a viewfinder on the screen of your iPhone. Simply position the Watch within the viewfinder.

This helps your iPhone recognise the Watch. If it fails though, you can tap Pair Apple Watch Manually and follow the instructions on screen.

4.

Set up as new or restore

Lewis Painter / Foundry

Here, you’ll be asked whether you want to restore from a backup or set up as a new Watch, Chances are this is your first Apple Watch, so select ‘as new’. We’ll be continuing the tutorial on the basis of setting up a new Apple Watch for those new to the scene.

If you do have a backup from an old Watch though, tap Continue and you’ll be presented with a list of backups to choose from.

It’s also where you might be prompted to install a software update if the Watch is running on outdated software.

5.

Select wrist preference

Lewis Painter / Foundry

The Watch needs to know which wrist you’ll be wearing it on. Select left or right, and then tap Agree to the Terms and Conditions (if you indeed agree), and then tap Agree once more.

6.

Sign in to your Apple ID

Lewis Painter / Foundry

You may be prompted to sign in to your Apple ID at this point, so have your email address and password ready.

You might also be asked to remove an Activation Lock, so follow the instructions. If you have bought your Watch second-hand, you might need to contact the seller to get them to remove their Activation Lock.

Apple has instructions on that here.

7.

Set a Passcode

Lewis Painter / Foundry

You don’t have to create a passcode, but it’s a good idea. You don’t have to enter it every time you look at your Watch, only when you first put it on having taken it off.

It is a good security measure, and Apple makes it compulsory to use Apple Pay.

8.

Tinker with your preferred settings

Lewis Painter / Foundry

Here, you should be presented with a screen to sort out your settings: This can range from text size and boldness to access to Location Services, Route Tracking, Wi-Fi Calling and Siri. It’s also where you’ll be introduced to features like Emergency SOS and Fall Detection.

You’ll also be prompted to verify your current age, weight and height to make sure that the Watch correctly tracks your fitness.

9.

Set up Apple Pay and/or mobile data

Lewis Painter / Foundry

If you’ve opted for a cellular version of the Apple Watch, you’ll now be prompted to set up a mobile data plan. If you don’t want to do this now, you can tap Not Now to skip it and set it up later via the Watch app on your connected iPhone.

You’ll also be prompted to set up Apple Pay by adding a card via your iPhone.

10.

Wait for the syncing process to finish

Lewis Painter / Foundry

Not long now! Your Apple Watch is syncing with your iPhone. Keep them near to each other until the progress wheel on the Watch is complete and you’re good to go!
