Suggested January 2024 How To Increase Browser Cache Size For Better Performance

A browser cache is a storage area for data that computers use to speed up the process of loading webpages. It saves downloaded web page resources, such as images, videos, CSS, Javascript, and so on. The next time you visit the page, those resources are already there. In short, the browser cache allows your browser to load the page more quickly.

If your cache fills up, your browser can bog down. A variety of problems may occur, such as pages loading more slowly or incompletely. To solve this problem, you can delete all the information in the cache. Doing that speeds up your computer, but now your loading speeds slow down. Alternatively, you can increase your browser cache size.

How to increase browser cache size

Follow the steps below to increase the browser cache size in several of the common browsers you may be using.

Google Chrome

Google Chrome doesn’t provide a way for you to easily change the size of the browser cache. Here’s the workaround for Chrome in Windows:

3. In the Target field, add --disk-cache-size=1073741824 (with the number representing the size of the cache you want in bytes. 1kilobyte = 1024 bytes) to the end of the path. Leave a space after the quotation marks at the end of the existing text before adding this information.

This trick should work for most Chromium-based browsers.

Firefox

The Mozilla Firefox browser does have a user interface to access the size of the cache and change it if necessary. Here’s how.

1. Open the Firefox browser.

2. Type about:config into the address bar.

3. Press Enter.

4. Accept the warnings.

5. Scroll down the alphabetical list to find (or search for) browser.cache.disk.smart_size.enabled.

7. Restart Firefox.

8. Now look for browser.cache.disk.capacity.

That’s it. It is that easy to increase browser cache size. You should also look into creating various browser profiles for safer browsing. If you want to improve your browser’s performance even further, check out these tweaks to speed up your browser in Windows 10.

How To Calibrate Your Android’s Sensors For Better Performance

The sensors in your phone may not be something you think about regularly, but you’ll know when they stop working correctly. Malfunctioning sensors can cause serious issues with the apps that you use. Since they affect the performance of the phone, you should keep them in good working order.

Checking the sensors is one thing you should try before taking your phone in for repair because there are several options to fix the problems for free.

Diagnosing Sensor Issues

If you are using an app, such as a racing app, that reacts to the ways you move your phone, and the app doesn’t respond correctly, there’s probably an issue with one of the sensors. You might also notice that the phone’s screen doesn’t turn off when you are talking on it or that the screen doesn’t dim or brighten automatically.

If you think there is a problem with one of the sensors, test another app that uses the same sensor. If the other app works, then it is a problem with the application itself and not the sensor.

But if the other app does not work correctly either, then it is most likely a sensor issue.

How to Calibrate the Sensors Secret Codes

Android devices have secret codes that allow you to get more information about your phone. Secret codes are a series of symbols and numbers that open menus not available in any other place on the phone. For example, on a Samsung Galaxy, the user can type the code *#0*# into the phone keypad. This sequence opens a HwModuleTest mode where you can find a choice to test the sensors.

Here are some generic secret codes that may work on other Android devices. Each brand of phone works differently, but with a little research, you can find the codes you need.

*#*#0589#*#* – Light sensor test

*#*#2664#*#* – Touch screen test

*#*#0588#*#* – Proximity sensor test

Built-in Sensor Tests Third-Party Apps

You can find specific apps that are designed to calibrate one particular sensor. For example, to calibrate the gyroscope, you can try Accelerometer Calibration Free or Physics Toolbox Sensor Suite.

Or, if your proximity sensor is giving you problems, you could try Proximity Sensor Reset (Calibrate and Repair).

If after restarting your phone and trying several of these apps and tricks the phone still does not respond correctly, you may need to reset it to factory settings. That is pretty much guaranteed to fix the issue. Just make sure to back up your phone first.

Windows 8 Release Preview Brings Better Performance, Prepping For The Final Release

Note that nothing in Windows 8’s Release Preview is final. However, Microsoft might just do a couple of minor adjustments after this. What you see is very close to the final product.

You can download Microsoft’s Windows 8 Release Preview here, if you’d like. Do not install this on a partition as an upgrade to your current primary installation. Install it on either a new drive, new partition, an unused computer, or a virtual machine (like I do). You’ll get a key that you need to write down once you start the installation.

Well, the introductory screen is rather cute and similar to the one we’ve seen in Windows 8 CP:

There seem to be more colors to choose from, empowering you to personalize your computer more. The next steps are just a bunch of configuration mumbo jumbo we’ve already covered in our review of Windows 8 CP, so let’s move on.

The next step was to sign in to your Microsoft account. You can use any Windows Live account to be able to store app data and other configurations particular to your Windows installation. The setup also allows you to enter a phone number with which to receive an SMS when you want to recover the account in case you lose your password.

After the setup’s complete, I see the usual Metro screen, only slightly different:

The Start screen’s background has changed, but nothing much overall is different. The task manager and other features we had a look at are the same. Now here’s what’s different in the Release Preview:

Metro interface is much smoother operating from a mouse and keyboard. Others who have installed the update on tablets have tested it and found it to be very smooth as well.

Response time is excellent even on a virtualization environment.

It’s easier to navigate the charms and open apps bars through the mouse.

This kind of improvement in performance might make the actual release of Windows 8 something to look forward to.

Although there are a lot of users who are understandably upset at the interface changes, it’s just because you have something to get used to. Some people weren’t terribly excited when Microsoft made the transition from MS-DOS 4.0 to a fully-functional desktop GUI.

Because of the difficulties some people might encounter while trying to get used to the Metro/Desktop interfaces, Microsoft has promised that it will integrate a tutorial interface that will come packaged with Windows 8’s release, allowing people to learn how to use the interface without having to figure out the ropes on their own.

How To Improve Organizational Performance

Whether you’ve recently started a business or own an established company, continuous improvement is a crucial goal. Better performance means more sales, increased profits and additional capital to fund growth. Even if your business is doing well, there’s always room for improvement.

To improve organizational performance, you’ll assess all aspects of your business and determine whether they’re operating at peak performance ― and, if not, why. A clear roadmap on what to improve will emerge.

We’ll explain how to improve your organization’s performance and outline the types of organizational improvements with the most significant impacts.

How to improve your organization’s performance

When assessing your organization’s performance, start with your business’ most critical areas. For example, if you’re a service business, focus first on your team, including your employee training programs, employee engagement level and total compensation structure. For a manufacturing company, look at manufacturing processes, equipment and suppliers first.

Regardless of where you start, the following six best practices will help you grow and improve your business from within.

1. Engage your people to improve organizational performance.

Employee engagement is one of the most discussed issues in business today. Business owners can take concrete steps to improve employee engagement and help team members feel passionate about their work, deliver their best performance and strengthen their commitment to their employer.

To improve employee engagement, consider the following tips:

Share your business strategy with your team: Build a comprehensive understanding of your business strategy throughout your workforce. Ensure everyone can answer the following questions: Why do customers buy from us? Who are our key competitors and why do their customers buy from them? How do I contribute to our unique differentiation?

Build trust with your team: Employees must know their managers and executives care about them as people and are committed to their success.

Empower your team: Empower your staff so they understand how essential they are to the business. Ensure every employee uses their preferred skills and has an effective degree of autonomy.

Implement improvements by department: Focus each department on improving its procedures and targeting its activities. Every department is crucial to operations; overall improvement results when every facet of the business focuses on progress.

FYI

Engaged employees have lower levels of employee absenteeism, better employee retention and higher morale.

2. Communicate better to improve organizational performance.

Communication is critical in today’s organizations. However, leaders often face communication challenges and many companies experience communication issues.

Focus on communicating clearly with straightforward language when discussing core business subjects like the following:

Performance targets (departmental and organizational)

Progress on business goals and projects

Obstacles and solutions

Competitor issues

Customer successes

Current organizational initiatives

In addition to external communication, let employees know you’re open to hearing from them. Encourage employees to take initiative, suggest improvements and pass along market feedback to help leadership teams make better decisions.

Tip

Implement an anonymous employee feedback system so all team members feel comfortable sharing their ideas and issues.

3. Identify and remove internal roadblocks to improve organizational performance.

Are your company’s policies, procedures and structures aligned with your competitive differentiation strategy? Look for misalignment indicators, including the following:

Do employees have to work around policies, technology tools and work procedures to get things done?

Do your policies and work procedures help people get the right things done quickly?

Are inter-departmental relationships positive, such as manufacturing and sales?

Are workplace conflicts and frustrations routine?

Streamline your processes to make them more accurate and efficient. Additionally, break down communication silos between departments or functions so everyone works toward the same goals.

4. Align your metrics to improve organizational performance.

For metrics to be valuable, your team must be able to access and understand them. Here’s how metrics can help each department do its part to meet company goals:

Metrics guide decisions: Valuable metrics serve as decision-making guides and ways to prioritize work.

Metrics set your strategic direction: Nonfinancial metrics that relate directly to your competitive differentiation can help keep everyone aligned in a similar strategic direction.

Metrics should be tailored to each department: Explain to each department how metrics are chosen and measured. Tailor metrics to each department so that team members understand how they impact the company’s performance.

Metrics guide goal-setting and rewards: Let each department know how it’s doing on key metrics and reward team members when goals are met.

Did You Know?

Track company culture metrics like adaptability, wellness and comfort levels to gauge your employees’ engagement and happiness.

5. Use training and development strategies to improve organizational performance.

Many organizations have a workforce approaching ― or past ― traditional retirement age. Additionally, employees quit for various reasons, including pursuing better opportunities. Are you prepared to train employees to perform essential work when other team members leave? Are you providing your team with the business skills they need to keep your organization competitive?

Here are ways to ensure your employees are optimally trained:

Create a workforce hiring plan: Develop a workforce plan to ensure a hiring process timeline sufficient to develop people to perform the necessary duties.

Focus on comprehensive training: All employees should receive training that applies to their current duties and potential future responsibilities.

Develop career paths for your team: Focus on professional development by developing career paths for your team so they can progress to necessary future roles. Know your people and their future goals. Support them in channeling their paths to the future within your company.

6. Focus on your business strategy to improve organizational performance.

There are three types of value propositions ― or competitive differentiation strategies ― in business. While you should do a good job on all of them, focus on one area where your company can excel.

The three value proposition types are:

Customer intimacy: Customer intimacy involves customizing your offerings to meet each customer’s individual needs. The goal is to provide outstanding customer experiences and build strong, long-term customer relationships.

Operational efficiency: Operational efficiency involves providing a universal set of products and services designed to be cost-effective for customers. This is not competing on price as much as it is providing value to customers to save them money. Do your products make customer processes more efficient? Do they reduce downtime or improve quality?

Leading edge: This involves providing new, innovative products and services based on the latest technologies and practices. You must have a strong research function and frequently introduce new and improved products and services that are different and effectively meet customer needs.

FYI

Explore the psychology of organizational change to help improve your organization’s performance. True change happens when people change their thinking, beliefs and behavior.

Types of organizational improvements

Organizational improvements are an ongoing process and every organization has specific needs. However, most organizations need continuous improvement in the following areas:

Strategy and mission: Changes in strategy and mission are often challenging to map. However, business owners must continually monitor how well ― or if ― their organization is meeting its mission. If necessary, you must be prepared to change strategies.

Organizational structure: Organizational structure concerns the roles, objectives and responsibilities of individuals, departments and teams. Structures can change; some are relatively minor while some, such as mergers and acquisitions, are considered extreme and intense.

People: Personnel-related organizational improvements can include turnover, hiring, training and other changes beneficial for the organization.

Knowledge: Changes and improvements to an organization’s knowledge are critical for processes, progress and initiatives.

Process: How you do things can significantly impact productivity. How easily can your team accomplish fundamental tasks? Instituting intuitive, efficient and communicative processes will get products out the door quicker, reduce errors and minimize employee frustration.

How To Increase Site Traffic

7 must-check questions for your acquisition strategy

To help you think through how to improve your site traffic, Dave Chaffey and I  have developed these seven key questions to help improve your results. We hope they’re helpful – let us know how you find them. You can find more detailed guidance in the Reach section of our RACE digital marketing planning course.

This is the first in a short series covering different parts of digital strategy to focus on:

Question 1. Do we have visibility of actual against target performance in support of our business goals?

There’s the popular marketing mantra – ‘you can’t manage what you can’t measure’. And, in my opinion that’s the place to start from when planning to grow the effectiveness of your digital acquisition. The benchmarking process starts with a clear understanding of how you perform across a range of channels, and then understanding the relative efficiencies of different sources for traffic or reach based KPIs and their impact on marketing or sales conversions, including lead generation or email newsletter sign-ups. These are the VQVC metrics Dave describes in this post introducing the RACE KPI framework.

Amazingly, marketers will still spend on a channel and judge success based upon a simple traffic or visitor KPI, such as volume, and the draw a cost based on visitor or impression. This is a route to failure in commercial terms. You need volume, quality and value measures.

Instead, understand the value of visitors, by channel based on setting goals for lead or sign-up at the minimum, ideally link it to conversion. Worst case you can tie your overall traffic mix to sales, best case you understand sales by channel. Prepare for the tricky discussion of what channel gets the credit – last or first referring, or is the mix credited accordingly!? Keep it simple initially and pick one.

Take a look our Eretail KPI post to help with further ideas on the key measures:

Question 2. What is the right mix of paid, owned and earned media to meet our goals?

You can see from our diagram below the benefits of using the full range of media available today in maximising the overlap between the three different types of media. Achieving this overlap requires the integration of acquisition campaigns. Content on your blog or hub site can be broken down and re-shared into other media types, maybe even directly through APIs such as the Facebook API if not by a considered process to social media marketing. It’s useful to also think of a company’s own presence as ‘media’ in this sense – these being an alternative investment to other media that offer opportunities to promote products using ad or editorial formats.

The one-line take-away is to ensure that there’s emphasis on a plan to become multi-channel publishers, and stop separating ‘media’ from ‘social or online PR’.

For more details, you can read our full post explaining explaining paid vs owned vs earned media.

Question 3. Have we maximised the efficiency of each channel, including channel mix?

Though we want more traffic, and we’re assuming that its commercial value is understood and benchmarked, the traffic mix is important since it helps manage against weaknesses and highlight new opportunities for growth. There’s a risk if “too many of your eggs are in one basket”, particularly on natural search reliance as Google changes its algorithms…

There are all kinds of complexities that can affect reporting on traffic mix, where too much is tagged as “direct” or “other” due to emails or campaigns not being properly tagged. The key thing is that once traffic mix is on your agenda you can spot changes and start to manage the mix. Ask where you’re over-reliant first and foremost, for example maybe you’re over-reliant on paid media or affiliate/partner sites. And, more logically you can spot opportunities if you compare to industry media mix averages like the one from Google shown below. Ask are you getting enough (commercially relevant) traffic from social media or influential industry sites, maybe that would highlight opportunities to consider a tactical or campaign focus within LinkedIn.

The “right mix” will vary drastically between types of sites, for example e-commerce vs publishing platforms, and of course by industry where the types of users differ.

Question 4. Who are we targeting and what are the core messages that we need to communicate?

The key take-away here surround what Joe Pullizi calls the “intersection between what a brand wants to communicate, and what the user wants to find, solve or hear”. It sounds dead simple, it is really, yet how many brands communicate only what they want to sell, then worse assume that every buyer thinks like they do – and even worse assumes that all personas are ready to buy today.

You are not the consumer! Instead, start by using your internal knowledge to identify web personas (“a summary of the characteristics, needs, motivations and environment of typical web site users“). Think about the buyer stages too, often referred to as the ‘scenario’, for example I want to research about product X or understand if I actually have a need in the first place.

Overlay the messages that you want to communicate to those buyers, you might consider some simple customer research to identify or confirm what you really understand the motivations behind each of those persona types.

As a result of the work, and in the same vein, be sure look at how you may tighten your site’s online value proposition. Ever been to a web site and wondered ‘Why am I here?’, ‘How does this help me?‘ or ‘Does this site give me what I need?’. And then left shortly afterwards? That’s why the top-level benefit or message needs to be absolutely clear to site visitors, especially first time visitors.

Read more about developing your online value proposition and browse a few web proposition examples.

Question 5. Are we putting sufficient time into identifying and then managing relationships with partners and influencers?

With a hub and spoke model in mind, your site being the hub, influencers exist on different spokes. Our social radar diagram (below) helps you think that through and prioritise different outposts, some of which will be more powerful influencers. Our radar was inspired by Brian Solis’ Conversion Prism, but we found it unclear, if not beautifully designed.

Once identified, true influencers and partner sites need to be treated with the respect they deserve, your business is effectively in a relationship, and like any relationship it develops over time and is based on respect, trust and a lot of giving. You wouldn’t expect a relationship to develop any other way.

Read our tips on developing influencers here.

Question 6. How do we integrate acquisition channels and manage customer journeys to maximise effectiveness?

I think there are two dimensions to this, at least obvious ones. On the one hand you need to mine the data, to understand what is influencing purchase versus what is influencing lead generation versus traffic, on the other hand it’s about understanding your consumer, those personas and appreciating the stages of purchase and designing that in to your communications, channels and website over the whole buy cycle.

Primarily, there’s the need to be findable in multiple places by those personas at the various buyer stages – the buyer stages where giving you personal data is of little interest, and exploring impartial industry sources is! For example certain outposts or influencer sites will lend themselves to those exploring a topic, ideally those outposts will have a good search results presence on keywords that maybe you don’t. As the user progresses to exploring your product area, or even brand name they’ll progress to review sites and in turn your site which would also cater for more than one “buyer type”. This works just the same offline, industry journals or consumer magazines are places where great content, well-PR’d come into their own.

With your site in mind, signing up for a well considered ebook might be ‘step 1’ for people who are exploring a pain point and defining their needs. You’d expect to the need to re-market them and earn permission to sell via email, maybe driving that prospect to a webinar where you may actually acquire a lead in the true sense. The key take-away – get close the how your personas types journey from browse – research – compare – buy.

Check out Dave’s notes from Kevin Hillstrom on multichannel marketing.

Question 7. Is our social presence effective and are we measuring reputation?

Irrespective of the type of goals that you have. Web analytics and social media monitoring tools can combine to enable you to measure what matters to you at any given time. You can also monitor softer but important KPIs, such as positive brand sentiment. Our post on the IAB social media measurement framework summarised our perspective on the approach being developed by the IAB Social Media Council, their presentation is below.

We also presented an alternative approach focussing on 6 key metrics:

Gross views on main networks network and own blog/community

Connections or subscribers on main networks

Social media referrers – visits to site measured through web analytics and where necessary campaign tracking tags

Social media conversions – conversion to goals or sales measured through web analytics

A framework for measuring social media activity

How do our seven questions measure up for you? Anything that we can improve upon?

How To Increase Upload Speed

Upload speed means how fast you can transmit data from a device over the internet. Whether sending an e-mail, liking a social media post, playing online games, or video chatting, it’s essential to consider upload speed over the download.

If you’re a home user and have tested the internet connection, you’ve likely noticed that the upload speed is much slower than the download. Well, this is mainly because most users still utilize a Cable-Model or DSL internet, which prioritizes downstream over upstream data.

There can also be other reasons you’re facing slower upload speed – outdated router, weak Wi-Fi signals, damaged networking device, and more. Although the best way to increase this is by upgrading the internet plan, there are other techniques too, which we will discuss further.

A slower upload speed may not be a serious issue if you’re a normal user. But if you’re an avid gamer or work from home most of the time, this is something you shouldn’t ignore.

The better the upload speed, the clearer your video calls, fewer the lags in games, and quicker the file transfer. While it’s considered good if the rate is at least 5 Mbps, we recommend aiming for more than 10 Mbps for a smoother online experience.

Before diving into the methods below, we suggest power cycling both the router and modem on a daily basis. This will clear temporary data and restore your networking devices to their default state. Hence, any issues within them get fixed, and you shouldn’t have any problem with the upload speed.

With the increased number of devices, both your upload and download speeds are bound to get affected. There’s a high chance someone might hog the network bandwidth among several users in your household. Therefore, limiting the number of devices is the best precaution to preserve internet speed.

Different Ethernet Cables

Having a wireless connection means you can move your devices within a specified range without losing internet access. However, Wi-Fi is slower than a wired connection and is more prone to signal interference, overused bandwidth, etc.

You may have noticed that your upload and download speeds are affected after moving even a little further from your Wi-Fi router. But this can be solved by adopting a LAN connection, which can additionally improve connectivity and security.

When using ethernet, it’s also essential to consider appropriate ethernet cable. Generally, home users prefer twisted-pair of different categories (CAT 5, 6, 7, 8).

If you’re using a CAT 6 cable, you may only get the maximum speed of 1000 Mbps over a 100-meter cable. Thus, switching to a higher category (7, 7a, or 8) can transmit signals up to 40,000 Mbps, significantly improving the upload speed.

Adjust Your Router

As mentioned earlier, a router’s location can also fluctuate your internet speed. The further you move away from the networking device, the wireless signal keeps weakening. Hence, it’s vital to adjust your WiFi router to an ideal location so there is no interference wherever you move around your home.

If it’s not possible to change the router location, we recommend moving close to the device yourself. You should now notice a slight improvement in both your upload and download speeds.

When uploading files, ensure that you do not run other resource-hungry applications. Opening such programs can consume considerable bandwidth, negatively affecting upload speed.

There are several network monitoring software that can help identify programs and services consuming high bandwidth. Also, you can utilize the Resource Monitor on Windows to check the same:

Firstly, open Task Manager using the dedicated hotkey, Ctrl + Shift + Esc.

Although most of us prefer a VPN to bypass firewalls or enjoy a stable connection on specific services, keeping it enabled may slow down your internet. Once you disable it, you’ll notice that the files get uploaded instantly. Kindly follow the below instructions on how to turn off the VPN on Windows 11:

Go to the Settings application by pressing Windows + I keys.

The Metered Connection setting can be enabled on both ethernet or wireless connections to reduce excessive data usage on the connected network. But while doing so, some apps may work differently, affecting the upload speed. Here’s a quick guide on how to fix this issue:

First, open Settings on your PC and go to Network & Internet.

Now, navigate to the connected network’s properties.

Check your upload speed, and you’ll likely notice an increase.

The Domain Naming System (DNS) translates the domain names to computer-understandable format (IP addresses). Since each server has its own speed, you can try out which works best for you. For demonstration, we’ve used the popular Google DNS server, which is proven to increase the upload speed:

First of all, open a web browser and navigate to your router’s configuration page. For demonstration, we’ve used TP-Link Archer A7.

Log in using the username and password.

Save the setting and check your upload speed to see if this has done the trick.

Another way to increase upload speed is updating everything – networking devices, network drivers, and the operating system. Any missing system files or damaged drivers can reduce both the upload and download speeds.

Updating your modem and router’s firmware is relatively easy. However, this is different for every manufacturer. You can either contact your ISP to get the firmware update or do it manually, as demonstrated below on TP-Link Archer 7:

Open a web browser and visit your router’s configuration page.

Next, open Advanced settings.

If yes, hit the dedicated button and wait until the router’s firmware is complete.

Now, open your modem’s configuration page and repeat the same steps to upgrade its firmware.

Moreover, you can even upgrade your router from 2.4 to 5 GHz or higher band. This will maximize your network performance and can also improve the upload speed. Likewise, we recommend adopting a mesh router for better coverage. This way, you do not have to worry about positioning yourself or the networking device.

If none of the techniques worked for you, the final option is to contact your ISP. Sometimes, they intentionally throttle bandwidth to reduce network congestion. So, it’s best to inform them about your slow upload speed, and they should help you out.

Nonetheless, you can always ask your ISP for a symmetrical connection (same download and upload speed). However, they will likely charge more, and you’ll also need to switch from your DSL or Cable-Model to a fiber-optic network.
