Suggested March 2024 How To Get More Storage On Xbox One Or Xbox Series?

Games can eat through internal console storage rather quickly, so you may be searching for a workaround “How to get more storage on the Xbox One or Xbox Series?”

The options are very similar for either the Xbox One or the Xbox Series family consoles. See, there’re two ways to expand your storage. Either you manage what’s already there or buy an extra storage drive.

There’re some rules, especially for the Xbox Series consoles. But if you want to avoid re-downloading a game every time, your best option is to buy an extra drive.

How to Get More Storage on Xbox Consoles

The Xbox One console family ships with a 500GB HDD storage drive or 1TB of storage.

The first thing you can do is swap the storage for a bigger one, but it’s not as convenient as adding an external drive.

The best way to expand your Xbox One or Xbox Series memory is by adding an external hard drive. The process is similar on either console, although the Xbox Series has an official external storage card for better functionality.

Adding External Storage to the Xbox One

You can buy an external drive and plug it into any Xbox One’s USB ports. We recommend you to buy one, rather than using an old one you have around.

There’re certain requisites these drives must fulfill:

The minimum storage must be 256GB. The maximum storage is 16TB.

The USB type must be 3.0

You can use up to 3 external drives

The drive can be either HDD or SSD. On SSD drives, games can load a bit faster.

The drives must have the proper format. You can configure the format with the console, though, so it’s not to worry.

Any portable or external HDD or SSD can work on the Xbox One. Some manufacturers create items specifically for the console, but these are usually more expensive.

Regardless, here’re some examples:

You would recognize these are 3.0 USB drives by reading the specifications. In particular, you’d see “USB 3.0” on the “Hard Disk Interface” bracket.

Configuring an External Drive on Xbox One or Xbox Series

After you buy the external storage you want, here’re the options to configure the drive:

Turn on the console

Plug the drive into any of the Xbox One’s USB ports

When you first connect it, the Xbox will ask you if you want to format the device

Otherwise, here’re the steps to format the device yourself:

These options are the same for Xbox One or Xbox Series, as both consoles share interface and features.

Adding External Storage to the Xbox Series

The Xbox Series ships with 500GB or 1TB of storage. Moreover, it supports the same external drive expansions as the Xbox One. It means they must fulfill these three requisites:

A minimum of 256GB storage, up to 16TB

You can only use up to 3 external drives

A USB 3.0 interface

The portable drives can be either HDD or SSD

However, new-gen games can only run on the internal SSD. It means Xbox Series games and “Optimized for Xbox Series X/S” titles must be running from the internal SSD.

Aside from the internal SSD, you can also buy the official Seagate Storage Expansion Card for the Xbox Series X or S. It will run your new-gen games.

In summary, here’re the functionality of the drives on the Xbox Series:

Media TypeInternal SSDSeagate Expansion CardUSB External DriveXbox Series X/S gamesCan run Can run Only storageXbox One games (Optimized)Can run Can runOnly storageXbox One games (not optimized)Can run Can run Can run Xbox 360 gamesCan run Can run Can run Xbox gamesCan run Can run Can run

Configuring the Official Seagate Expansion Card for Xbox Series

The official Seagate expansion card for the Xbox Series is a plug & play device. You connect it to the back of the console as a regular USB drive, and you should be able to use it immediately.

To configure the official expansion card on your Xbox Series, these are the steps:

If you don’t see the card, remove it, wait 30 seconds, and place it again on the USB port.

As you see, the steps are the same as configuring a regular external HDD or SDD drive.

How to Manage Your Xbox Storage

Aside from spending your money to buy extra storage, you can also manage the items on your drive. These items include saved files, apps, games, videos, screenshots, etc.

However, system files will take up some space, so even without any games or apps, you won’t see the full 500GB or 1TB.

Either way, we’re sharing a few tips to manage your storage. Some of these include the possibility of you using an external drive.

Manage Your Internal and External Storage

After you connect and configure external storage, here’s how to manage your internal and external drives:

You can hover over any drive and press the Menu button on your controller for a list of options. Here’re things you can do:

View Contents

It takes you to games and apps, and you can see how much space any game or app is using. If you want to uninstall something:

Press the menu button on your controller

Select Manage game and add-ons

Check the box of the items you want to uninstall

Select Save changes

Install Here by Default

It will choose the drive as the default install location of any game or app you download.

Move or Copy

The option allows you to transfer files from one drive to another. That includes games, apps, screenshots, videos, and more.

Here’s how to do it:

Uninstall Things

As I explained above, it will allow you to uninstall games and apps. You simply check the boxes and then uninstall games and apps.

Uninstall, Move, or Copy Games

Some of these options on the storage menu are available on the Games & apps menu. In particular, you can uninstall a game like so:

Press the Xbox button to open the guide

Go to My games & apps

Select See all

Select Games or Apps

Highlight a game

Press the Menu button on the controller

Select Uninstall

Delete Local Files

Another option is deleting your saved files, which take a significant amount of storage. Microsoft will keep your data on the Xbox Live cloud, so you don’t need to have the “physical” copy on your console.

Here’re the steps:

Remove Leftover Add-ons

Leftover add-ons are the items that remain after you uninstall a game. Here’s how to remove it:

Press the Xbox button to open the guide

Go back to My games & apps

Select See all

Select Manage

Select Free up space

Select Leftover add-ons or Shrinkable games

Select Uninstall All

Discord Finally Comes To Xbox: Here’S How To Use Discord On Your Xbox

Joe Hindy / Android Authority

Discord is one of the most popular chat apps for gamers. It’s an easy, simple way to get into voice chats as well. While Microsoft has been beta testing Discord on its Xbox consoles for months now, the full-scale rollout is now finally live. So, in honor of the event, we’ll show you how to connect your Xbox to Discord and join voice channels.

To use Discord on Xbox, turn on your Xbox. Once done, go on your phone or PC, go to the voice channel you wish to join, and select the new Join on Xbox option. You’ll be transferred to the Xbox app on your phone, where you can transfer the voice to your Xbox.

How to set up Discord on Xbox

How to join a voice chat with Discord on Xbox

The official Discord app on your PC or mobile phone.

The official Xbox app on your phone or Xbox Game Bar on your PC.

An Xbox that is signed into your Xbox account.

Finally, you need to unlink your Xbox account from Discord and your Discord account from Xbox. Microsoft says this requires a fresh link.

Note — If you linked for the first time after September 13th, 2023, you don’t need to perform the above step.

Set it up on your phone

Joe Hindy / Android Authority

This is, in our opinion, the easier option because you can do it just about anywhere.

On your phone, open the Discord app.

Hit the three-line menu button in the top left corner and then your profile picture in the bottom right corner.

Tap Connections and then the ADD button in the top right corner.

Select the Xbox option. Follow the instructions and sign in with your Xbox account to link the two accounts.

That should be it. Once done. You’ll be able to use voice chat from Discord on Xbox.

Note — When I tested this method, connecting to Xbox via Discord also connect my Xbox app to Discord automatically. We don’t think you have to do both connection processes, but we wrote both just in case.

Set it up on your PC

Joe Hindy / Android Authority

Follow the instructions and sign in with your Xbox account to link the two accounts. It’s a fairly linear process.

Note — You’ll be redirected to your browser to log into everything. Once done, you’ll need to return to the Discord app to authorize the connection to Xbox.

That’s it. You’re all set up and ready to go.

Note — When I tested this method, connecting to Xbox via Discord also connect my Xbox app to Discord automatically. We don’t think you have to do both connection processes, but we wrote both just in case.

How to join a voice chat with Discord on Xbox

Once you’re all set up, joining a Discord channel is pretty easy. The mobile version is the most straightforward. The PC version requires mobile anyway, so we recommend skipping it.

Join voice on the phone

Joe Hindy / Android Authority

Open the Discord app and navigate to the channel you wish to join. Tap on it.

The Xbox app will open. Select the Xbox you want to use if you have multiple, and then tap the Transfer Voice button. The app will tell you that it succeeded. You are now connected to the voice chat.

You can use the Discord app to adjust things like volume and other settings.

Open the Discord app and navigate to the channel you wish to join.

Discord will produce a QR code that you scan with your smartphone.

The QR code will take you to the Xbox app.

From here, it’s the same as the mobile phone tutorial above. Select the Xbox you wish to use if you have multiple Xbox consoles connected and hit Transfer Voice.

Once done, you can use Discord to adjust the volume and other settings.

Discord should work with every version of the Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

You need to have the August 2023 update installed on your Xbox in order to use Discord. Check that your Xbox is fully up to date and then try again.

Both Microsoft and Discord require you to unlink your account and link again. Try completely disconnecting your Discord from your Xbox and vice versa, and then set it up fresh to see if that works.

Discord on Xbox is a pretty big deal, and there is a lot of hype. We imagine there are a lot of people trying it out in the first few days. Give it a few days until the hype dies down, and it should work better. Even we had some issues getting our accounts re-linked and getting into our first voice chat.

You are basically joining the Discord chat on your phone, and it’s essentially casting from the Xbox app to your console. All of the volume and voice controls are on Discord.

How To Record, Edit, Share, Delete, And Manage Game Clips On Xbox One

Xbox One not only can take screenshots, but it also allows gamers to record, share and manage game clips. That said, while Xbox One allows basic functions natively, the Xbox Team has a dedicated application – Upload Studio – to enhance the overall experience. But lets first learn how to capture game clips.

How to capture Game Clips on Xbox One

Launch a game. You can start playing it for the best results.

When you find a moment of which you want to take a screenshot, press the Xbox Button on your controller.

Press X button on your controller, and it will record 15 seconds of that gameplay.

If that’s not enough, there is more.

1] Increase Instant Recording Time:

Here you can change the duration of default recording from 15 seconds to 2 minutes.

In case you are set to 720P video recording, you can switch to 1080P as well.

2] Record Previous Moments of GamePlay:

It is obvious that you would want to record something amazon that you just did seconds ago. To do this, you can open the Capture Option, and select Capture what happened from 15 sec to 2 min.The game will not pause when you do that, so you might have to think about crucial moments before recording it.

Download & Install Upload Studio

The app is not installed, but whenever you try editing, it will take you to the Store, and ask you to download it.

Filter to display only Game Clips.

This will launch the Upload Studio in the Store if it’s not installed.

Select Game DVR, and then select View all captures.

Launch Upload Studio when it finishes installing.

Upload Studio is no simple editing tool, by this I mean, it offers a lot of features, and ability to upload 30 minutes of clips that you don’t really need a dedicated PC unless you are a professional.

Upload Studio features:

Add up to 15 unique segments, i.e., effects.

If you are recording yourself with Kinect, you can add yourself there too.

Upload Clip Templates along with 140+ new effects to apply to your clips.

Option to add a voiceover to individual clips or your entire video.

Add text, all-new intros, outros, transitions and splash screen.

How to edit your game clips on Xbox One

Open Upload Studio, and then select Manage Clips. This will open the Xbox DVR where you can see all your Captures. Filter with On this Xbox and Game clips.  Navigate to the clip you want to edit, and Select EDIT. It will launch Upload Studio with that game clip.

You get all editing options including, Trimming and Add Voiceover. Select Trim to make sure you can remove things which weren’t needed. Here, you will have to use the Xbox One controller sticks to trim parts from left and right. You can also change the timeline by moving down, and shift the entire timeline.

Once done, you can upload it to OneDrive by selecting Finish. It will also be uploaded to Xbox Live, and it sends out a warning about Privacy & Xbox Live code of conduct.

In Short, All clips uploaded to Xbox Live needs to follow the Xbox Live code of conduct. If they don’t fall into the guidelines, the clip will not be shown to all. So if your clip takes a bit of time to show in the Live feed, that’s the reason.

About Privacy & Online Safety

Who can see your videos outside of XBox Live? You can choose between Friends, and Everybody or completely block it.

Choose to block sharing outside Xbox Live.

The same configuration can be selected four your profile, live broadcast, and Kinect or Webcam.

How to share game clips from Xbox One

Open Manage Captures

Filter Game Clips

Select Game Clip you want to share

Select the Share Icon, and from here you can share to Activity Feed, Message, Club, Twitter, and OneDrive.

Game Clips which you have edited using Upload Studio, are instantly uploaded to Xbox Live. However, if your settings don’t allow it, then you can always come back here, and then share it manually.

How to delete Gameclips on Xbox Live

If you wish to delete any clip which you uploaded to Xbox Live, then go to Manage Captures, make sure Xbox Live is selected, and then filter out Screenshots. Then use the right bumper to select the multi-select option which is at extreme right. Here you can select one or multiple game clips to delete.

This covers most of the things you will need to edit your clips right on Xbox One. If you feel the need for professional editing, it’s a good idea to use an external drive, and save everything there. However, you will have to appreciate the kind of features you get from Upload Studio which helps so many.

How To Control Your Xbox One With A Smart Assistant

The Xbox One might be one of the strongest gaming consoles on the market (especially if you have the Xbox One X), but for many people it’s also a way to consume media.

Through Xbox, you can watch Netflix, Hulu, and Crunchyroll to your heart’s content. You can stream music and watch YouTube. All it takes is downloading the apps to your machine and navigating to them with your controller.

Table of Contents

Now you have another option – smart assistants. Through Amazon Alexa, Google Home and Cortana, you can turn your Xbox on and off, start apps, control the volume, and much more. Some of these services are still in beta, which means all the bugs haven’t been worked out, but early results are promising.

Here’s how you can connect your Xbox One to your smart assistant and try them out for yourself.

How To Connect & Control Xbox One With Alexa

In our tests, we found the Amazon Echo to be one of the easiest devices to connect with the Xbox One.

To control your Xbox One, you’ll start by saying Alexa, tell Xbox to… and then follow your command. You can also say ask Xbox. Alexa gives you the ability to start and stop video, turn the volume up and down, launch apps and games, and much more. If you aren’t sure what else you can do, you can even ask Alexa herself with Alexa, ask Xbox what I can say.

When you set up the device, its default name will be Xbox, but you can change that name to something like Living Room Xbox or Bedroom Xbox if you want more specificity. This is even more important if you have more than one Xbox One that you want to use Alexa with.

The coolest part (in our opinion anyway) is that if you recently used your Xbox and you don’t have any other devices paired with Alexa, you can drop the word “Xbox” from the phrase and just give the command. For example, Alexa, play or Alexa, launch Hulu.

How To Connect & Control Xbox One With Google Home

The integration between Google Assistant/Home and Xbox One is still new. In fact, the public beta really only started at the end of September. There are still a few bugs to work out, so you might run into trouble setting up this functionality, but it does work.

In our experience, Google Home gave a warning that it could not pair with the Xbox One, but the console appeared in the linked devices list and could be controlled via Google Assistant.

The beta test for this functionality is only available in English, but Microsoft plans to broaden language support when the full version releases later in the year.

Google Assistant can do to the Xbox everything Alexa can do, and the commands are quite similar. Just say, Hey Google, pause on Xbox or Hey Google, take a screenshot on Xbox.

How To Connect & Control Xbox One With Cortana How To Enable Cortana On The Console

Cortana is only available in some regions and more features are supported in the United States than in other countries. The full functionality may expand to other countries, but this has not yet been confirmed.

How To Use Cortana Through a Mobile Device
