Suggested January 2024 How To Check If You’re Running 64

Google has announced that it’ll be auto-migrating 64-bit Windows users to the 64-bit version of Google Chrome. If you’re moderately clued up about computers, you’ll probably know whether or not your CPU and OS are 64-bit.

If in doubt, to check how many bits your CPU is, go to “System Information” in Windows, take a look at “System Type” and see if it says “x64-based PC” or “x86” – the latter means you have a 32-bit PC and can’t use 64-bit apps. To check the bits of your OS, go to “System” and see what it says next to “System type.” If you’re 64-bit on both counts, you’re good to go.

But there’s a little bit more to getting your hands on 64-bit apps, as they’re rarely the default option when you download them. Here we’ll show you how to find out what bit version of Chrome you have, check if you’ve received the automatic update, and manually install the 64-bit version of Chrome if you don’t have it yet (and have a 64-bit PC capable of running it).

Why Use 64-bit Chrome and 64-bit Apps in General?

Before doing this you probably want to know what the actual point of it all is. First, it’s more secure, just as with any 64-bit programs, because 64-bit software is better at sandboxing, i.e. running processes in isolated environments where they can’t affect the rest of your PC. So in Chrome’s case websites and so on are safer to browse. It’s also faster, with tests from the Chromium devs showing 15% improvements in HD video decoding on YouTube among other things.

Check Chrome Version and Update It

Here you’ll see quite clearly whether or not you have 64-bit Chrome because it’ll say it next to the version number. From Chrome 58 onward anyone with a 64-bit PC will have the 64-bit version of Chrome, though there’s a chance you got the 64-bit version before you got Chrome 58. In which case, congratulations! You’ve been a 64-bit Chrome user all this time without even realising it.

Install Chrome 64-bit Manually

But if you don’t have the 64-bit version of Chrome, then you’ll want to get your hands on it. To do this, go to the Chrome download page, and if your PC is 64-bit, the default option should be “for Windows 10/8.1/7 64-bit.” (Google only made the 64-bit version the default version recently, so if you downloaded it a while back, you probably received the 64-bit version.)

Download the 64-bit version of Chrome, install it, and you’re away!

Conclusion

In truth, you shouldn’t expect switching to a 64-bit version of Chrome to feel like some kind of life-changing, eye-opening upgrade that leaves you wondering how you ever lived without it in the first place. Seeing as many of the perks come on the security front, most of the improvements will be invisible. Each 64-bit app varies, however, and some have greater benefits than others, so if you do have a 64-bit PC, you should approach downloading 64-bit apps with a ‘Why Not’ attitude. They won’t do any harm and just might do you some good.

How To Check If Your Windows 10 Pc Is Activated

Activating Windows on your computer helps verify that your copy is genuine and is being used in accordance with the Microsoft Software License Terms. It ensures that you are using an authentic copy of the desktop OS and helps you stay on the right side of the law. So if you are wondering how to check your Windows 10 PC is activated or not, you have come to the right place. We will show you how to check the Windows 10 activation and licensing status on your computer in this article.

Check Windows 10 Activation Status (2023)

We will teach you multiple ways to check if your Windows 10 installation is activated, including through the Settings menu, using the Command Prompt, and also the Run command. The methods below apply to all types of Windows 10 devices, including desktops, laptops, convertibles, 2-in-1s, etc.

Method 1: Using Settings Menu

Now, go to the “Update & Security” settings window.

Method 2: Using Command Prompt

While the method described above for checking the licensing status of your Windows 10 installation is by far the easiest, it is only available on Windows 10 and later. If you are still rocking older versions of the software, including Windows 7, 8, and 8.1, the following method will help you out. It also works on Windows 10.

Now copy+paste the following command: slmgr.vbs /dlv in the Command Prompt and hit Enter.

Note: You can use the /xpr qualifier instead of /dlv to check the licensing status. Or, you can use /ato to attempt activation using the installed product key (if Windows is not already activated). To learn all the slmgr options, visit Microsoft TechNet.

Your PC will now display a small popup window with the activation information. If your copy of Windows is licensed, it will say so next to the “License Status” option.

Note: Core edition in the screenshot above refers to Windows 10 Home. It has nothing to do with Windows Core OS.

Method 3: Using Run Command

Like the method above, the following method not only works on Windows 10. You can also run it on older versions of Windows, including Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1, to check

You can also run the aforementioned command directly through the “Run” function to check if your Windows 10 PC is activated or not.

You will once again see the exact same pop-up windows as the last method. It will let you know the activation status of your Windows 10 installation. However, as stated earlier, you can also use slmgr.vbs /xpr, in which case, you will see the following window.

Check If Your Windows 10 Installation is Activated

Checking the activation and licensing status of your Windows 10 computer is as easy as Apple Pie. So go ahead, make sure that you are using an authentic version of the OS and that you are indeed getting what you paid for. If not, you need to have a serious chat with whoever you bought your computer from. Moreover, if your Windows 10 is not activated, you can legally get Windows 10 key for free or cheap to license your copy of the software. Meanwhile, you can check out some of our other Windows 10 tutorials, including how to uninstall Cortana from Windows 10, how to fix camera issues, and how to optimize your Windows 10 PC for gaming.

How To Check If Your Xiaomi Device Battery Is Healthy

Back in 2023, Apple introduced a battery health feature with iOS 11.3. Unfortunately, Google didn’t follow Apple with this feature and it’s still absent in vanilla Android. Except for Huawei, which already offers this, it’s not super simple to get access to battery health on Android devices. Anyway, through this article (via), we’ll teach some cool ways to check if your battery is healthy and safe.

Check your battery health via ADB – Works on any Android device

ADB method is known for needing a PC and the phone connected with it. However, for battery health, you can also use the LADB app. Anyway, those who want to go the old method will need to install ADB drivers and enable Developer Options on your phone to turn on the USB Debugging feature. Your phone needs to be fully charged, otherwise, the measurements will be incorrect. To go into the method follow the following steps:

Open command prompt (cmd) on PC. You need to open the CMD in the ADB folder, so it will make things easier.

Type “ADB shell” and connect your phone to your PC. If the drivers are installed properly, the PC will promptly detect the phone and you will see the device codename on the command prompt.

If everything is correct, type “dumpsys battery” and enter.

Through ADB, it’s possible to check the current, voltage, capacity, temperature, and other information of your device’s battery. The “Charge Counter” in the information shows the battery capacity of the device, and “status” means whether the battery is full or now. In case, it’s full it will show status: “5”. The data will certainly vary depending on your battery capacity, but the above image shows a battery that has still a charge counter of 2368000, or 2,368 mAh available.

To check the battery health percentage, you need to use a math formula. You need to use the following formula: (actual capacity / current capacity) *100. For example, the formula here considers the Pixel 4 battery of 2,800 mAh. So the math is (2386 / 2800) *100. As a result of the calculation, the battery health is 85 percent, but the data may not be 100 percent accurate. As said before, the most accurate results come with a fully-charged battery.

Check Xiaomi Battery Health using Bug Report Method – Specific for Xiaomi

The device will create a bug report and you’ll be able to find it from the status bar.

Locate and extract the bug report zip file that matches the date you created the bug report. You can use the native file explorer to do so.

Open the text file in the last compressed file you extracted in a text editor and search for “healthd” in it.

Let’s see if the upcoming MIUI 13.5 will bring native / easier methods to check the battery conditions of your Xiaomi device.

Hopefully, these methods will help you to uncover the truth and know the real state of your battery life. If you love to uncover the features available on Android devices, check this article, that shows how to get access to interesting Pixel 6 features.

How To Check The Case

Introduction to SQL ignore-case

SQL Case sensitivity is to use the query statements and the keywords tables and columns by specifying them in capital or small letters of alphabets. SQL keywords are by default set to case insensitive, which means that the keywords are allowed to be used in lower or upper case. The names of the tables and columns specification are set to case insensitive on the SQL database server; however, it can be enabled and disabled by configuring the settings in SQL. The COLLATION is the property that decides and helps us to specify whether the elements other than keywords in SQL are to be allowed for case insensitivity or not. In this article, we will learn how we can check for the assigned collation values that determine case sensitivity of SQL and further see how lower and upper functions are used to make the queries that ignore the case of the values of the columns while searching or applying restriction. In this topic, we are going to learn about SQL ignore-case.

Hadoop, Data Science, Statistics & others

Checking the case sensitivity of SQL server SELECT Serverproperty('COLLATION') AS COLLATION;

The output of the execution of the above query statement is as follows –

The collation value contains either CI or CS in it. They stand for case insensitive and case sensitive, respectively. In the above output, we can observe that the collation value contains CI that is case sensitive, and hence while querying on that database server, the objects other than keywords can be specified in upper or lower case. The same applies to keywords as they are allowed to be entered in any case, but most of the time, it is a good practice to use them in all upper cases according to conventions.

Alternatively, the collation property for SQL database server can also be checked by querying on the table named databases that are present in the sys database of your SQL server to check for the case sensitivity that is allowed for the particular database by mentioning the value of the name column as the value of your database name for which you are checking the collation. Let us a query for the existing database at my SQL server named educba and check for the collation value using the contents of the databases named table of sys database and following query statement –

SELECT collation_name AS COLLATION FROM sys.databases WHERE name = 'educba';

The output of the execution of the above query statement is a follows, giving the collation value as SQL_Latin1_General_CP1_CI_AS in which CI stands for case insensitivity which allows us to query on that database by specifying non-keyword words in upper or lower case –

Using LOWER() and UPPER() functions for case in-sensitive that is ignoring the case in queries.

Suppose that the table named educba_articles that exists in my educba database has the collation set to case sensitive collation as shown in the below image –

Let us check the contents of the table by executing the following query statement on the table –

SELECT * FROM educba_articles;

The output of the execution of the above query statement is as follows –

Now, executing the following query using lower function helps in retrieving all the submitted records –

SELECT * FROM educba_articles WHERE LOWER(status) = "submitted";

The output of the execution of the above query statement is as follows –

Now, we will use the function to make an insensitive comparison that makes the comparison using the UPPER function as shown in the below query statement –

SELECT * FROM educba_articles WHERE UPPER(status) = "SUBMITTED";

The output of the execution of the above query statement is as follows –

In a similar fashion, UPPER() and LOWER() functions can be used in the LIKE clause for getting similar records and making the search ignoring the case in the table or database having collation that shows CS that is case sensitive in its collation. Consider that we have to find out all the records of the table educba_articles table “ing” value in its name column. We can use the LIKE clause for searching the contents containing the “ing” value in the name, and further to search such that the case is ignored, we will use the LOWER() function first. Our query statement is as follows –

SELECT * FROM educba_articles WHERE LOWER(` name`) LIKE "%ing%";

The output of the execution of the above query statement is as follows –

Now, let us use the upper() function to use the search facility that makes the ignore-case search. For this, our query statement will be as follows –

SELECT * FROM educba_articles WHERE UPPER(` name`) LIKE "%ING%";

The output of the execution of the above query statement is as follows –

Conclusion – SQL ignore-case

The SQL case sensitivity can be set for non-keyword objects such as tables and columns by specifying the collation against the database, tables, and column level by mentioning CI or CS in it that stands for case insensitive and case sensitive, respectively. If the collation is set to CI containing the value that is Case insensitive, then there is no necessity to use any function like LOWER() or UPPER() to make the search to ignore the case. Further, we can make the search and condition specifying to ignore the case in SQL using the LOWER() and UPPER() functions while collation contains CS. This can be used while applying restrictions with equal to the operator or search with LIKE keyword to make search case insensitive, that is, the search or restriction that ignores the case.

8 Ways You’re Doing Google Ads Wrong & How To Make It Right

Google Ads is a powerful platform for driving awareness, traffic, and conversions.

A finely tuned and optimized account can provide a tremendous return on investment and deliver against digital marketing goals.

Odds are that you have a dedicated resource on your team, an outsourced resource, or maybe you’re that person or team that’s charged with properly managing the Google Ads account.

Regardless of structure and responsibility, it is important to remember that no matter how well our Google Ads account is performing and returning (or not) on investment, Google will gladly accept our payments.

There are eight important things that you need to make sure you’re not overlooking or doing wrong.

I have outlined those items and ways to make them right if you find that you’re losing money or oversight in any of these areas.

This topic resonates with me as I have previously shared ways that you’re wasting money on your investments in content marketing and SEO.

1. Assuming the Previous Manager Had Things Optimized

If you’re taking over an account or did at some point and didn’t blow it up and start from scratch, you might have some hidden baggage.

There are plenty of valid differences of opinion and ways to strategically operate a Google Ads account and do paid search.

However, even the best occasionally forget a setting or miss something when Google updates the system.

I strongly recommend auditing the account and not taking things for granted.

Even if you’re taking over from your best friend or most trusted colleague, you need to spend some time understanding all of the settings, account structure, negative matching, and to get a handle on the what and why of how they are configured before you get too deep in your own process and strategy.

2. Not Customizing Settings for Your Needs

Google Ads accounts start out with a lot of defaults and one-size-fits-all formatting. There’s danger in ignoring settings and not routinely reviewing them.

A quick example of one of these settings comes into play if you’re targeting a specific country, region, or radius.

Another example of settings to beware of are the “auto-applied” ad settings.

If you receive the automated Google created ad adjustment recommendations and don’t review, edit, or turn them off within 14 days, they’ll automatically be applied to your account.

You should always want to have full control of your account so owning the settings and keeping automated things out (if you don’t want them or agree with them) is critical.

3. Not Conducting Regular Audits

It isn’t enough to perform just an initial audit when you take over an account.

You need to perform regular audits at least annually.

Even the best need their accounts and work checked.

Just like a writer, it is hard to work on something for a long period of time and see a typo looked over many times.

The more you’re looking at an account, the more you need someone else to take a periodic look.

4. Skipping Competitor Research & Monitoring

Audience research to uncover the right targeting for keywords, placements, remarketing, and matched lists are a big part of setting up an account and strategically optimizing it over time.

This is a natural approach.

Beyond the audience though, we need to put a focus on our competitors.

Know:

What they’re spending.

What keywords they’re targeting.

How to make adjustments.

Go in a different direction or prepare for what it will take to target the same audience.

5. Overusing Broad Match & Lacking Match Type Strategies

Find a match type strategy that works for you.

Know where you’re prospecting and learning versus where you’re targeting the bottom of the funnel, ready to convert prospects.

6. A Disproportionate Focus on Quality Score

Quality score matters, but it isn’t the only thing to focus on.

If you’re obsessed with it, consider how it might be blinding you from other factors.

If you’re feeling guilty of not looking at it enough now that I’m mentioning it, well, it is time to take a look and make sure you’re doing well enough to not waste spend compared to competitors with low scores.

7. Being Too Hands-Off

I’ve learned some lessons over the years about what happens when not enough oversight is given to a campaign.

I audited a large bank and found that their auto-pilot efforts had wasted more than $13,000.

In another, more personal case, I was managing a campaign for a local mortgage company with branches around a specific metropolitan area.

All of the best practices and strategic optimizations were in place and we were getting close to their cost per lead goals a few months into the campaign.

What happened next, I couldn’t have predicted.

I had all of my competitor monitoring set up and running.

However, I found that overnight I was losing traffic and that my costs had gone up significantly.

Thankfully, I caught this in a 24-hour period, and over the next few days was able to tell exactly what had happened.

One national lender was present in the market and was willing to bid crazy amounts to win the auction.

A second national lender entered the market also willing to bid really high.

Those accounts were on auto-pilot and were running an automated bidding war against each other paying more than twice what the norms had been per keyword.

That second competitor entering started the cycle.

To this day, their compliance and legal teams would cringe to know they were showing up for things like “payday loans” with how loose and quick they were trying to spend money.

Had I just stuck with my normal competitor monitoring and reports (as noted and encouraged above), it would have taken me weeks or more to understand why my numbers were off and it would have been harder to correct from.

8. Operating in a Silo

At some point, and maybe on an ongoing basis, your company has invested in branding and content.

Paid search can operate in much more of a silo than other digital marketing channels.

Please resist the temptation to stay too deep in it.

Branded content, messaging, and specific calls to action that align with the brand overall can help you.

While you might be focused on generic keywords, you can often benefit from being consistent in voice and wording of ad copy, ad creative, and landing page messaging for those that have had other touchpoints and exposure to your brand.

Tap into:

User testing.

Testimonials.

Value propositions.

Calls to action.

Other brand assets.

Leverage these so you don’t have a disconnected experience for your paid search traffic and audience.

This requires collaboration with sales, product managers, and more.

Conclusion

We all want to have the most strategic and optimized Google Ads accounts possible.

Whether we build the accounts from scratch, inherit them, or put all of our time and attention into them, there’s always a risk of not being aware of the things that can waste money.

Time and money are our resources and we need to invest them to get the greatest return on investment possible and to ensure we’re not missing anything.

Happy optimizing!

Why You’re More Likely To Cry On An Airplane

Most of us have become used to sitting for extended periods of time suspended in 60-ton metal machines. Aside from hearing the compulsory airplane safety warnings at takeoff, most people don’t think much about how flying impacts our bodies and minds. But some pretty weird stuff happens when we’re seven miles above sea level: Air pressure drops, our taste buds go partially numb, our skin dries out, and some of us cry. Actually, many of us do. Virgin Atlantic conducted a Facebook survey in 2011 that found 55 percent of respondents said their emotions were heightened on flights. In response, the airline introduced “weepy warnings” before particularly sad movies in-flight. But why do we weep once in the air?

While peer-reviewed studies on the science behind the “Mile Cry Club” are few and far between, scientists across fields from film to psychology to medicine have taken interest in the topic. And while they haven’t identified a definitive cause, researchers think it’s likely a combination of oxygen deprivation, dehydration, and stress.

As planes ascend to their cruising altitudes, air pressure drops–that’s why our ears pop–to levels equivalent to the outside air pressure you’d experience while hiking through the mountains in the Swiss Alps (6,000-8,000 feet above sea level). This resulting low cabin air pressure causes a reduction in the amount of oxygen carried in our blood, a condition called hypoxia. Hypoxia has a slew of potential symptoms, including fatigue, confusion, impaired decision-making, and notably, it wreaks with our ability to handle emotion.

On top of this, the air conditioning systems on airplanes dries the air until there’s 25 to 30 percent less humidity, causing dehydration (which explains why we get drunk more quickly inflight).

While mild hypoxia won’t impair a healthy person very much (a good thing, considering pilots operate under these conditions routinely), Jochen Hinkelbein, a Berlin-based medical researcher and president of the Society for Aerospace Medicine, says that hypoxia makes us more vulnerable to psychological and physical changes. He added that though he’s perfectly healthy, he often falls asleep during takeoff because of these dramatic pressure and humidity changes, which both can make you feel dizzy and tired.

These physiological changes may then lay the groundwork for our brains to start considering our uncomfortable surroundings. Though passengers may not be conscious of their emotional vulnerability, our brains are working overtime on airplanes due to claustrophobia, travel stress, and fatigue, according to clinical psychologist Jodi De Luca of Erie Colorado Counseling.

“We have little control over our environment while we are traveling by plane,” says De Luca, who studies the impact living in a high-altitude mountainous region has on mental health. All of these stressors trigger some people’s fight-or-flight response, she says.

This causes the body to produce more stress hormones called cortisol which influence our emotions by increasing our blood pressure and heart rate, making us less able to cope with them. Couple that with some oxygen deprivation, dehydration, and a corny movie, and it’s no wonder Virgin Atlantic reported that “41 percent of men surveyed said they hid under blankets to hide their tears.” It might also explain why toddlers, who are prone to temper tantrums anyway, are even more likely to fall into a deconstructive crying fit while on board a flight. Though, no studies have explicitly studied this connection.

Stephen Groening, a professor of Comparative Literature, Cinema, and Media at the University of Washington, has been studying this phenomenon in the context of in-flight entertainment for years. He says the content of films people report crying during doesn’t matter. Most recently, his friend told him that he wept watching Thor on a flight to Australia. He thinks another contributing factor is the environment travelers find themselves in. When we watch movies on the plane, we’re much closer to screens—and people—than we’re used to.

“It’s not so much about the content, it’s about being in a situation where you’re isolated, but at the same time you’re surrounded by strangers,” Groening says. “You have this physical closeness for an extended period of time that you don’t have in any other situation.”

While there’s no definitive mechanism scientists can point to just yet, most researchers surmise that it might just be a combination of all these factors that give us the weeps. This subconscious discomfort, combined with the physical changes Hinkelbein describes, likely explains why we cry on planes, explains Groening.

De Luca concurs: “Emotions govern our lives more than we know, and our environment influences our emotions more than we realize.”
