In the first part of 2023, it seemed like people were starting to catch on to the fact that smartphones don’t require an upgrade every year. According to the International Data Corporation, smartphone sales fell year-over-year in the first quarter of 2023, continuing a downward trend from the last quarter of 2023. By the end of the third quarter, the segment had rallied some—even Apple got a boost in part because of its increased efforts to sell refurbished phones through its direct channels.

But, for users like you and me, the sales aren’t the important part of the story. We want shiny new devices that offer impressive new features that can justify the annoying task of switching devices. And while some big changes are coming down the road in 2023, this past year felt like the beginning of a transition.

5G started to pop up

This year, every major smartphone carrier in the U.S. flipped the switch on some kind of 5G network. Performance, coverage, and even the simple definition of what “5G” actually means varies widely at the moment, but it’s out there. And 5G-compatible devices made their debut this year as well.

There’s still no 5G iPhone, but Samsung hopped into the high-speed data waters with 5G versions of its Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 Plus devices. As networks expand next year, we expect 5G connectivity to work its way down the product lines as the promise of super-fast connections lures users into trading up their devices.

Right now, it’s still rather unlikely that it’s worth buying a 5G phone unless you live and stay smack in the middle of a 5G network area, but that will likely change in 2023.

Folding phones kinda happened

You probably didn’t buy a folding phone this year. In fact, I’ll bet you the dessert from my Lunchables that you don’t even know anyone who bought a folding phone this year (and it’s a Reese’s cup, so you know I’m serious). Samsung’s Galaxy Fold was, however, one of the biggest mobile device stories of the year.

Just before its slated release, reviewers found that the Galaxy Fold was prone to breaking for a number of reasons. The outer screen layer peeled off, dust got under the display itself, and it just generally didn’t seem ready for the masses. Samsung did officially release a sturdier version of the device later in the year—and reportedly sold a million of the $2,000 gadgets—but the stumble did its damage.

Many of the other folding devices we expected to hit the market this year never even really materialized. And Microsoft announced its plan for a folding phone that avoids the flexible screen completely, instead opting for a pair of displays with a seam in the middle.

Surprisingly enough, the reborn Motorola Razr provided the brightest spot in the folding phone world. It’s still not ready to take on the other flagship devices on the market, but it showed that Motorola actually understood that the value of a folding phone isn’t going from big to even bigger, but rather from small (when folded) to reasonably sized when splayed out.

The camera wars continued on

Picture and video prowess remains one of the main battlefields on which smartphone manufacturers can differentiate themselves from their competition. This year, both Apple and Google made considerable leaps in their smartphone camera technology.

The new iPhone 11 Pro sports a three-camera array that includes a standard wide-angle lens, the familiar telephoto portrait lens, and a new super-wide lens, which added a whole extra dimension to its capabilities. Apple also introduced its Deep Fusion photo tech, which emphasizes fine details across the image. You may have heard it referred to as “sweater mode” because all of the sample photos involved people wearing extremely detailed sweaters.

Having tried all of the major players this year, I personally recommend the iPhone 11 Pro if you really care about taking pictures with your phone. The Samsung’s images always look overly saturated (a look some people love) and the Pixel 4 had an odd shadow striping issue in certain conditions that I couldn’t help but notice. Still, in 2023, just about every flagship-level photo had a great camera and if you can’t take a good photo with them, it probably has more to do with your skills as a photographer than the gear itself.

What’s coming in 2023?

It also seems likely that we’re going to get more folding phones. It seems some companies backed off in the backlash to the original Galaxy Fold debacle, but that won’t stop them forever. Huawei and LG already have plans for folding devices and Samsung may even show off more folding tech it plans to release later this year.

Whatever happens, you’ll probably be just fine keeping your current phone for another year unless it’s really falling apart.

Step 7: Select from the following edits before moving on the final editing page:

Trim: Tap and hold the left and right purple arrows to cut parts of the beginning and end of the recorded video.


: You can change the aspect ratio of the recorded video from several preset ratios – 1:1, 9:16, 16:9, 4:5, 5:4, 4:3, 3:4, 2:3, 3:2, 1:2, Story (for Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat), Facebook Post, and YouTube Cover. If you wish to see the default aspect ratio intact, select Original from the options.

Background: After you’re done cropping and resizing the video, you can choose to change the background of the frame by selecting from different options available.

Blur: This will add a blurred background around the video in such a way that the space around them will be filled with blurred portions of the video. You can choose from over five different options for blurred backgrounds.

Color: If you wish to set a background for a recorded video but do not want it to have blurred spaces around it, you can choose from various preset colors as a background for the edited video. You can set one colored background from around 50 colors available for choosing.

Gradient: Besides blurred and colored backgrounds, you can opt to spice things up by adding colorful preset gradients to the back of the recorded videos. Glitch Video Effects offers a selection of a few dark-colored gradients and a handful of bright gradients to apply as a background.

Speed: Recorded videos can be sped up or slowed down in this section. The slider on the screen lets you select a video speed between 0.5x and 2.0x, even after recording a video.

Rotate: Tap on the Rotate button at the bottom right to rotate the video once in the clockwise direction.

Step 8: After completing the editing in the current page, tap on Next (1/2) at the top right.

Step 9: Apply finishing touches to the video by modifying the following edits:

Glitch: While you might have already added a glitch effect to your recorded video, you can add another later of glitch effects on top of it.

Single glitch effect: You can add a single glitch effect to the video by pressing and holding the preferred effect until the slider reaches the end of the video.

Multiple glitch effect: You can tap and hold a glitch effect for portions of the video. Hold on an effect first and then select and hold another effect to apply it for the next portion. This way you can add multiple glitch effects on your video easily.

Filter: You can add permanent overlays to the video using the preset options available under this section.

Music: Besides the glitch effect, you can add songs to your video selecting from the options down below.

Select an already available music track: You can select from the tracks available on the app to add them to your video.

Import an audio file: By tapping on Import, you can select a song from your own library or local storage to add it to the recorded video.

Control original volume: Slide through the purple-colored bar to adjust the sound output from the original video.

 Text: Tapping on the Text tile will take you to a new window where you can add a text on top of the recorded video. Tap on the purple T+ button at the bottom to add text to a video. After that’s done, hit the tick mark to save the text edit.

Step 10: Tap on the Save button at the top right.

Your edited video is now saved on your internal memory. You can share the video with other platforms by tapping on the relevant tile available under Share to section.

The syntax of Convert.ToDouble() method in both its overloaded forms for converting a string to double is as follows:

In the above syntax, ToDouble() method takes one argument of type string (strValue) which is nothing but a string containing a number to convert to double.

public static double ToDouble(string strValue, IFormatProvider provider);

In the above syntax, ToDouble() method takes two arguments; the first is the string representation of a number which needs to be converted to double and second is an object which provides culture-specific formatting information. After conversion both these methods return the equivalent double value for the string passed as the argument.

How to Convert String to Double in C#?

In C#, the “System” namespace contains a class called “Convert” which contains the ToDouble() method in many overloaded forms to convert the specified type of data to its equivalent double value. Among these overloaded forms, two forms allow us to convert a string representation of a number to its equivalent double-precision floating-point number.

These two forms are as follows:

1. ToDouble(String);

Let us understand the working of the above method with the help of the below example:

In the above statement, we have passed a number i.e. “855.65” as a string to ToDouble() method which will be converted to double by the method and the resulted value will be stored in a variable of type double (doubleVal).

2. ToDouble(String, IFormatProvider);

Let us now understand the working of the above method with the help of the below example:

In the above statements, we first created an object of IFormatProvider using the class NumberFormatInfo which implements IFormatProvider. Then, we set some important properties for this object like NumberDecimalSeparator and NumberGroupSeparator.

NumberDecimalSeparator is used to get or set a string that can be used as the decimal separator in numeric values.

NumberGroupSeparator is used to get or set a string that separates groups of digits at the left of the decimal in numeric values.

Now, Convert.ToDouble() method will convert the given string to double using the formatting information provided by the object of NumberFormatInfo and the resultant value will be stored in the variable “doubleVal”.

If the value of the string in both of the above methods is “null” then these methods will return zero.

In C#, there exists another common way of converting a string to double which can be done by using Double.Parse() method and Double.TryParse() method.

Double.Parse(String) method works similarly to Convert.ToDouble() method as it takes a string representation of a number as an argument and converts it to a double-precision floating-point number. The difference is that if the string is “null” then this method does not return zero instead it returns ArgumentNullException.

Double.TryParse(String, Double) method works the same as Double.Parse() method except it returns a Boolean value which indicates whether the conversion has been done successfully or not. On success, it returns true and the respected double value gets stored in the ‘out’ parameter.

In the example images used in this tutorial, we used an iPad to place a black border around a photo, but you can use any other color for the border by using the color wheel selector or by tapping the other color options if you’d like to.

Two of the most common color borders to add to photos are black or white, which are commonly used in photography mattes. Adding white borders or black borders to a picture is often referred to as ‘matting’, and is usually aimed to bring out a particular color or add a particular feel to the image contained within the border matte.

In this particular case the relative thickness of the border may be inadequate for some users needs, as often a photo matte is much thicker. Of course you could just keep placing additional squares around the image each sized appropriately and with the same color, but if you’re going that route you might be better off just getting a dedicated app to add borders to images.

This is obviously just a creative use of the Markup drawing tools and Crop photo function, and it’s not an official matting or border method (currently there does not appear to be one, perhaps a future iOS release will include an ‘add border’ capability to the Photos app), but if you don’t mind thinner borders and matting and placing them on a picture yourself as instructed here, it does the job.

The Markup feature of Photos is really great, you can use it to draw and write on photos, fill out PDF forms, add signatures to documents, and much more. While this tip obviously focuses on using this Markup feature on iPad and iPhone, you can perform the same functions on a Mac too if it’s running a modern MacOS release with Markup support.
