GT bankruptcy puts Apple in control of Sapphire

GT Advanced is Apple’s partner in their yet-to-be-opened Sapphire Glass facility in Arizona. The facility is near completion, and with a possible ocean of Sapphire Glass flowing from the desert soon, GT Advanced filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy. In examining the circumstances surrounding that filing, it seems Apple could be poised to own the facility themselves.

In filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy yesterday, GT Advanced CEO Thomas Gutierrez said “Today’s filing does not mean we are going out of business; rather, it provides us with the opportunity to continue to execute our business plan on a stronger footing, maintain operations of our diversified business, and improve our balance sheet.” He went on to add filing for chapter 11 bankruptcy, which protects them from debt collection during a reorganization process, was the right thing for GT to do in paving a “path to future success”.

Gutierrez is now under the crosshairs for selling stock. One day before Apple announced their iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, which didn’t (and don’t) have Sapphire Glass, Gutierrez sold 9,000 shares of GT Advanced stock. After Apple’s announcement, GT shares fell 13%.

The bankruptcy announcement sent shares tumbling 93%. GT Advanced shares now sit right around $0.80.

Now, back to that Arizona facility.

The facility is owned by Apple, with the understanding it will be operated by GT Advanced. Apple funded GT’s purchase of equipment for producing Sapphire Glass through a $578 million loan.

The terms of that loan stipulate that GT must pay back the loan over the course of five years. If they fail to pay the loan in full, Apple is entitled to take full ownership of the equipment in the facility, leaving them producing Sapphire Glass independently.

When they made the deal with Apple, GT said the Sapphire Glass production would give enough cash to be solvent, and profitable. Being the only company producing Glass for the most sought after mobile devices on earth would yield less margin, but provide steady income.

That tenuous agreement has one tidy little loophole for Apple. Though they’ve loaned money to GT for the equipment, Apple is under no obligation to actually buy anything from them. While the facility is clearly meant to produce Sapphire Glass for Apple products, Apple can source added displays from whomever they like.

Apple can freeze GT out, purchase nothing from them, and take ownership of the equipment housed in the facility they own. Apple could also bring in another company to run the operation. They control the Sapphire Glass patents relating to design and production, so it’s not as if they’d have to license the technology from anyone.

It’s worth noting that just ahead of the bankruptcy filing, Apple CEO Tim Cook said via Twitter he was hiking in Grand Canyon National Park. Cupertino is a long way from Arizona, and an interesting place to hike the day before your display tech partner files for bankruptcy.

It’s not far from that Sapphire Glass facility, though.

Apple ‘Surprised’ By Gt Advanced Bankruptcy Filing, Company Spokesperson Says

Company spokesman Chris Gaither said in a written statement to Reuters, The Wall Street Journal and other major outlets that “we are focussed on preserving jobs in Arizona following GT’s surprising decision and we will continue to work with state and local officials as we consider our next steps”.

After purchasing a 1.4-million-square-foot facility in Arizona from a solar-panel producer for $113 million last year, Apple basically leased the site to GT Advanced. The idea was that Apple would own the plant and the equipment while GT would focus on component production.

But up until that point, GT was only known as a leading maker of sophisticated furnaces used to grow synthetic sapphire. According to the terms of the multi-year agreement, Apple would prepay $578 million — contingent on meeting certain technical requirements — for the cutting-edge equipment.

GT agreed to start repaying Apple beginning 2023. Crazypants analysts expected GT’s 2014 revenue to grow fifteen fold on the heels of the Apple deal alone.

The problem is, GT as a equipment manufacturer has never dealt with Apple in the past and it admittedly had no experience whatsoever running a large-scale mass production that can match Apple’s insane needs.

Unfortunately, the huge gamble has failed to pay off.

Suffering low yields and ongoing manufacturing woes, GT was unable to ramp up production of sapphire, prompting Apple to reportedly withhold the last $139 million payment, enough to push GT into financial distress.

As a result of these miscalculations and the fact that Apple unveiled new iPhones with heavy-duty Gorilla Glass glass screens, rather than sapphire, GT filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Monday, a move designed to allow the firm to continue normal operations and meet its obligations until it reorganizes its business and negotiate new financing arrangements with its creditors.

“Today’s filing does not mean we are going out of business; rather, it provides us with the opportunity to continue to execute our business plan on a stronger footing, maintain operations of our diversified business, and improve our balance sheet,” GT Advanced Chief Executive Tom Gutierrez said in a news release.

Waisuke Wakabayashi of The Wall Street Journal reported that Apple opted against using the precious gemstone, whose hardness is second only to diamond, after the material “proved brittle” and cracked in testing.

As of September 29, GT had about $85 million in cash.

Shares of GT nosedived 90 percent on the news.

The bankruptcy filing should’t disrupt Apple’s supply chain as the California firm has been sourcing scratch-resistant sapphire material for the Touch ID sensor and the iSight camera lens from other suppliers.

And even though two of the three distinct editions of the Apple Watch, due in early 2023, do feature a sapphire coating to protect their Retina screen, KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says GT’s bankruptcy won’t affect Apple Watch production as Apple is already working with a handful of other sapphire ingot (or cast) suppliers including Hansol and Harbin Aurora Optoelectronics.

For what it’s worth, the Mesa facility was supposed to create more than 700 high-quality jobs in the first year and “generate significant capital investment” going forward, as per The Arizona State Governor Janice K. Brewer’s November 2013 press release.

In addition, the project was expected to benefit the state by producing approximately 1,300 construction and other associated jobs.

It would seem that the brand Gibson has overstepped its ability to command the entire world of electronics. After a whole bunch of acquisitions, Gibson Brands just filed for bankruptcy. The brand’s most recent public statement on the matter suggests they’ll be trying to keep their bankruptcy transition invisible to the everyday customer. But when it comes to a case this massive, you can’t really tell until it’s all in motion. That goes for the guitars as well as the rest of Gibson Brands many subsidiaries. Especially the parts they bought recently and can’t sustain.

Gibson suggested they’d be winding down their Gibson’s Innovations business and would continue to operate during the proposed bankruptcy. This comes after Gibson took on some debt a few years ago and acquired several lesser brands in audio equipment and home entertainment. Brands acquired by Gibson over the past couple of years include: Onkyo stereos, TEAC, and Royal Phillip’s home entertainment systems.

This case was filed at Delaware Bankruptcy Court (debke) on the first of May, 2023. The case was announced to be handled by Judge Christopher S. Sontchi. Also on the list for recently filed chapter 11s in the same court are:

There’s a restructuring support agreement in place with senior secured noteholders of Gibson Brands, Inc. to help repay bank loans. It’s estimated by the bankruptcy petition that the brand has up to $500 million in debt. A PDF of the filing can be found at Reorg-Research (PDF). Estimated number of creditors in this case is between 1,000-5,000, and estimated assets ring in at between $100,000,001 and $500-million. Estimated liabilities are marked between $100,000,001 and $500-million USD.

UPDATE: Gibson CEO Henry Juszkiewicz released a statement this morning on the matter. “Over the past 12 months, we have made substantial strides through an operational restructuring. We have sold non-core brands, increased earnings, and reduced working capital demands.

“The decision to re-focus on our core business, Musical Instruments, combined with the significant support from our noteholders, we believe will assure the company’s long-term stability and financial health,” said Juszkiewicz. “Importantly, this process will be virtually invisible to customers, all of whom can continue to rely on Gibson to provide unparalleled products and customer service.”

El nuevo Realme GT Master Edition llega en un momento francamente interesante del año, una vez que el considerado flagship de la marca, el Realme GT 5G, fuese presentado el pasado mes de agosto con las especificaciones más altas entre los móviles de la marca.

Ahora, de cara a la recta final de año, la compañía anuncia la comercialización del Realme GT Master Edition, presentando la candidatura para liderar el rango de teléfonos móviles de gama media considerados más económicos.

Uno de los rasgos más características del Realme GT Master Edition es la gama de acabados en el que puedes adquirirlos. Existe la versión gris villeroy (diseñada por Naoto Fukasawa), que luce una parte trasera que se asemeja a la de una maleta.

Es la más llamativa de las tres, dado que las otras dos con acabados en blanco luna o negros cosmos presentan un color plano, que a su vez, repela bien la presencia de huellas dactilares, al menos la versión que hemos tenido oportunidad de probar en blanco.

Todas ellas se comercializan junto a una funda protectora de silicona que permite proteger ligeramente su trasera de posibles rayones. Igualmente, se proporciona adaptador de corriente de 65 W y el cable correspondiente de USB A a USB C para admitir dicha carga.

El conjunto de cámaras situado a la izquierda de su trasera, se encuentra bien alineado, con el logotipo de la marca en la parte inferior guardando cierta simetría entre todos los elementos del teléfono.

Con respecto al notch de la cámara selfie, cabe indicar que se encuentra también desplazado a un lateral, en lugar de mantenerlo en la parte superior central de la pantalla. El sensor de huellas dactilares está integrado en la pantalla en lugar de en el lateral, con una buena velocidad de respuesta y eficiencia.

Su peso es de 174 gramos, por lo que se trata de un teléfono ligero para las dimensiones de su pantalla, con un grosor que se encuentra dentro de la media con los 8 mm. Es manejable y su trasera tampoco es resbaladiza, por lo que podrás usarlo con seguridad.

Para cerrar el apartado de diseño, comentar que Realme mantiene en el GT Master Edition la presencia del conector mini-jack de 3,5 mm, una buena noticia para los amantes de los auriculares de cable, junto con doble SIM y botonera de volumen separada para facilitar su localización al tacto.

No hay certificación de ningún tipo en lo que se refiere a resistencia al agua o al polvo, algo por otra parte que parece lógico si tenemos en cuenta el rango de precios en el que se mueve el teléfono.

Más allá del tamaño de pantalla que asciende a las 6,43 pulgadas, cabe destacar que la relación de pantalla y cuerpo es del 91,7 % lo que nos indica que en líneas generales, los bordes son reducidos y la pantalla aprovecha bien el área de visualización.

Realme emplea un panel Full HD+ de tipo Super AMOLED que produce imágenes francamente brillantes y de gran colorido, con buenos niveles de contraste incluso cuando manejas la pantalla en exteriores a plena luz del día.

Con una frecuencia de refresco de 120 Hz y una de muestreo táctil de 360 Hz, el teléfono responde ágil a los gestos y a los desplazamientos que puedas realizar por la interfaz, mientras que el sensor de huellas dactilares permanece debajo de la pantalla.

Aunque lo más normal es aprovechar la frecuencia de actualización de pantalla más alta, dejando los ajustes en modo de selección automática, también podemos forzar mediante los ajustes de configuración, que la cifra baje a los 60 Hz si queremos ganar en autonomía.

También localizamos el modo de vídeo en HDR con el que puedes aumentar el brillo de la pantalla para aquellos instantes en los que reproduces vídeos procedentes de servicios de vídeo en streaming como Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video y cualquier otro.

El mayor recorte que sufre el GT Master Edition frente al Realme GT que también hemos analizado meses atrás, es que el procesador es de inferiores prestaciones, lo que se traduce en un rendimiento inferior a cambio de poder comprarlo a un precio más barato.

Se trata del Snapdragon 778G, el cual se abre camino entre los modelos de teléfonos de gama media, como es el caso del Xiaomi 11 Lite 5G o el Galaxy A52 de Samsung. Esto es algo que puedes comprobar en los resultados de nuestras pruebas, donde hemos incluido también al GT normal.

Los resultados nos indican que está bastante por debajo del GT normal que lleva el chipset Snapdragon 888, pero sigue siendo muy capaz frente a las tareas más habituales y a la posibilidad de tener que manejar alguna situación de multitarea.

Evidentemente, los resultados que obtenemos en los gráficos nos indican que si estás pensando en utilizar el móvil para ejecutar ciertos títulos de juegos exigentes, nuestra recomendación es que optes por uno de gama superior en el que los gráficos vayan más fluidos.

El móvil mantiene en esta versión el sistema de enfriamiento de cámara de vapor que la compañía utiliza en teléfonos de gama superior, con lo que no tendrás que preocuparte por la temperatura alta durante partidas de juegos, carga de batería o uso de aplicaciones intensas.

Como sucede con la mayoría de teléfonos móviles de gama media, la calidad que puedan llegar a ofrecer las cámaras es un punto muy a tener en cuenta por parte de aquellos compradores que compran un nuevo teléfono con la mente puesta en las posibilidades fotográficas.

Pues bien, los resultados que hemos obtenido con el nuevo Realme GT Master Edition, son en líneas generales, un tanto dispares, con buenos resultados en lo que se refiere a la cámara principal, pero con calidades mejorables cuando hablamos de la gran angular y de la lente macro.

La configuración de los sensores se compone de la cámara principal de 64 MP con apertura f/1,8, junto al gran angular de 8 MP con f/2,2 y macro de 2 MP con focal de f/2,4. La cámara frontal dedicada a los selfies es de 32 MP con apertura f/2,5, destacando por tratarse de un sensor Sony IMX615.

Con buena iluminación, la cámara principal te permitirá obtener fotografías sorprendentes en líneas generales de paisajes, objetos y personas. Los detalles son nítidos y las texturas se ven bien.

Incluso en aquellos casos en los que desactivas el modo de reconocimiento de IA y la función HDR, las tomas se mantienen a un buen nivel de detalles. El comportamiento con baja luminosidad no es el mejor, ya que los colores palidecen un poco, a pesar de lo cual, logra mantener el tipo.

Utilizando el ultra gran angular, conseguirás buenas fotos de vistas panorámicas sin sufrir demasiada distorsión de la imagen y la perspectiva de la fotografía, además de que mantiene las tonalidades homogéneas con la gama de colores que obtendrás si usas el objetivo principal.

Manejando el sensor de modo macro te darás cuenta de que es posible obtener detalles, pero tendrás que dedicarle más tiempo a la fotografía y tener paciencia para conseguir el enfoque deseado.

A continuación, observa la fotografía de la telaraña, o la de la seta con el insecto paseando sobre ella, manejando el modo de Ultra Macro disponible en los ajustes de la cámara del móvil.

Pensando en el uso intensivo que hacemos de la cámara selfie, Realme ha potenciado las posibilidades de la cámara frontal del GT Master Edition, de manera que conseguirás un buen efecto bokeh de desenfoque con posibilidad de editar la fotografía posteriormente y añadir efectos como el gótico o naranja rojizo.

También hay ajustes previos a la fotografía muy llamativos como el hecho de afinar mentón, reducir cara, agrandar ojos o afinar cara, con una barra de desplazamiento de 0 al 100 % con la que poder jugar con el ajuste. El resultado puede ser demasiado artificial, pero ahí está la posibilidad.

Nos gusta el hecho de que podamos comparar los resultados de la fotografía original con la editada mediante un botón rápido, lo que permite hacerse una idea rápida de cuál es la mejor opción antes de ser compartida en redes sociales.

Ya en el apartado de vídeo, el GT Master Edition puede grabar a una resolución de 720p o 1080p a 60 fps, o bien, a calidad 4K con un rango inferior de 30 fps. No obtienes ningún modo cinematográfico como sucede con los nuevos iPhone, pero es un recurso que podrás utilizar.

Partimos del hecho de que el nuevo GT Master Edition dispone en su interior de una batería de 4300 mAh, un poco menos que los 4500 mAh del modelo GT normal, con la misma opción de carga rápida de la batería a 65 W.

Esto no impide que podamos obtener una autonomía francamente inmejorable que según las pruebas con PCMark10 nos llevan a la cifra de las 14 horas y 40 minutos antes de agotarse por completo, con el ajuste de frecuencia de refresco de pantalla en modo automático.

Esto es mucho más que lo que la autonomía que nos brindó el Realme GT normal que se quedó en las 10 horas y 15 minutos. Así pues, con el aquí analizado estarás optando por un procesador de menor peso y rendimiento, pero a cambio, obtienes mejoras sustanciales en autonomía.

Si a este hecho le sumamos la tecnología de carga rápida con la que cuenta el teléfono, tenemos ante nosotros un móvil que estará a tu disposición a cualquier hora. Comprobamos que es posible cargar su batería al 96 % de capacidad en tan solo media hora.

Software

Realme UI 2.0

Modo de pantalla siempre activa

El GT Master Edition cuenta con Android 11 sobre el que corre la capa de personalización Realme UI 2.0. La única queja sobre la experiencia de uso es que hay cierto desorden de aplicaciones preinstaladas.

No obstante, incluye algunos extras interesantes como es PUBG y SoLoop, que a buen seguro muchos usuarios los utilizarán. En cualquier caso, puedes desinstalarlos fácilmente si deseas contar con más espacio para tus propias aplicaciones.

Hay además una sección completa para el bienestar digital, donde puedes pausar aplicaciones, establecer temporizadores / límites para ellas y cambiar la interfaz para tener un modo de hora de dormir, con una pantalla en escala de grises y una función de no molestar.

Encontramos interesante la opción de pantalla siempre activa, algo que ya contemplan los móviles de la marca con Realme UI 2.0, así como la bola de ayuda flotante o la barra lateral inteligente, funciones que puedes personalizar con acciones o aplicar accesos directos.

Precio y venta

El nuevo Realme GT Master Edition puedes conseguirlo a un precio que parte de los 349 € con 6 GB de memoria RAM y 128 GB de almacenamiento. Por tan solo 50 € más puedes optar por 8 GB de RAM y 256 GB, algo que francamente merece la pena plantearse.

Ya hemos comentado en el apartado de diseño las opciones de color en los que podrás encontrarlo y los diferentes acabados. Puede que el gris villeroy sea el que más adeptos encuentre, aunque el que hemos probado nosotros con acabados en blanco luna está francamente bien.

Si lo que quieres es encontrar un teléfono similar de gama media económica, echa un vistazo al Poco X3 Pro ahora con un precio por debajo de los 300 €. Es una gran alternativa aunque no tendrás la misma velocidad de carga super rápida ni la autonomía del GT Master Edition.

Veredicto

El Realme GT Master Edition conserva muchas de las grandes cualidades del modelo GT estándar: una gran pantalla, cámaras resolutivas, software sólido y velocidades de carga super rápidas.

La inclusión de conector para auriculares y la variedad de sus acabados también lo hacen bastante deseable para tratarse de un teléfono de gama media de bajo precio.

Sin embargo, la degradación del procesador y los colores exagerados que muestra la cámara ultra gran angular hacen que sea un poco menos competitivo frente al GT original, incluso a pesar de que el precio inicial sea más bajo.

Es más, hay rivales que ofrecen un rendimiento más potente en la misma gama de precios. Pero si te preocupa la autonomía de tu terminal y el hecho de poderlo cargar al instante, no encontrarás competidor en el resto de marcas del mercado.

How To Quarantine Yourself And Control The Effect Of Coronavirus

WHO, Italy Prime Minister Giuseppe, India’s honorable Prime Minister Modi ji and many Dr’s also said that do quarantine yourself at home and do your work from home to control the effect of Coronavirus.

Quarantine: –

It is for healthy people who may have been exposed to the disease if you have visited an affected country recently or have come in close contact with someone who has tested +ve. Quarantine is intended to restrict movement. Health agencies recommend a minimum 14 -days quarantine as an incubation period to see if flu-like symptoms develop. A quarantine person can live with their family or roommates.

Isolation: –

It is for those who are exhibiting symptoms or have tested +ve. The objective of isolation is to prevent the infected person from spreading the virus before they recover.

Disinfect

Don’t share your dishes, drinking glasses, cups, eating utensils, towels, or bedding with anyone including your pets. wash these items after you can use them.

Countertops, laptops, doorknobs, bathroom fixture, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets and besides tables are considered “high-touch surfaces-wipe them often with a household cleanser.

Frequently wipe down surfaces that may be contaminated by bodies fluids, including blood and stool.

Household members

Family members and other occupants should monitor the patient’s symptoms and call a health provider if they see a turn for the worse.

When around the patient, household members must wear a face mask, and both mask and gloves if they have contact with the patient’s bodily fluids. These should be thrown away immediately, never reused.
