Background

Apple insisted that it had a solid safeguard in place to protect privacy and prevent misuse. It would only match images against known CSAM databases; it would check at least two databases and require the image to be in both; action would only be triggered on 30 matching images; and there would be a manual review before law enforcement was alerted.

However, I and others were quick to point out that such promises are impossible to keep.

As the company has said in regard to previous controversies, Apple complies with local laws in each of the countries in which it operates. Indeed, it recently gave into blackmail before a new law even comes into force.

Any government could pass a law requiring tech companies to use their available capabilities (e.g., the CSAM scanning system) to look for images they say are associated with terrorism, or any type of political opposition.

Governments planned to misuse CSAM scanning tech

A new report today shows that this is far from a theoretical concern. A group of security researchers says that the European Union planned to use this technology to scan for other types of images even before Apple revealed that it had developed its own system.

The New York Times reports:

More than a dozen prominent cybersecurity experts on Thursday criticized plans by Apple and the European Union to monitor people’s phones for illicit material, calling the efforts ineffective and dangerous strategies that would embolden government surveillance.

In a 46-page study, the researchers wrote that the proposal by Apple, aimed at detecting images of child sexual abuse on iPhones, as well as an idea forwarded by members of the European Union to detect similar abuse and terrorist imagery on encrypted devices in Europe, used “dangerous technology” […]

The cybersecurity researchers said they had begun their study before Apple’s announcement. Documents released by the European Union and a meeting with E.U. officials last year led them to believe that the bloc’s governing body wanted a similar program that would scan not only for images of child sexual abuse but also for signs of organized crime and indications of terrorist ties.

A proposal to allow the photo scanning in the European Union could come as soon as this year, the researchers believe.

While the EU proposal was an independent initiative to use the same type of technology as Apple, it is not exactly a giant leap to imagine that – now the EU knows Apple possesses this capability – it might simply pass a law requiring the iPhone maker to expand the scope of its scanning. Why reinvent the wheel when a few strokes of a pen can get the job done in 27 countries?

Image databases used within the EU may well be trustworthy, but once this precedent has been set, it would be a very small step for less enlightened governments to pass equivalent laws.

The researchers say that Apple’s approach is incredibly dangerous.

“It should be a national-security priority to resist attempts to spy on and influence law-abiding citizens,” the researchers wrote […]

Apple Csam Faq Addresses Misconceptions And Concerns About Photo Scanning

Apple has responded to misconceptions and concerns about its photo scanning announcements by publishing a CSAM FAQ – answering frequently asked questions about the features.

While child safety organizations welcomed Apple’s plans to help detect possession of child sexual abuse materials (CSAM), and to protect children from predators, there has been a mix of informed and uninformed criticism …

Background

Mainstream media confusion arose when Apple simultaneously announced three separate measures, with many non-technical people confusing the first two:

iMessage explicit photo warnings for children in iCloud Family groups

Detection of known CSAM photos by scanning for digital fingerprints

Responding to Siri and search requests for CSAM materials with a warning and links to help

There has also been a lack of understanding about the methods Apple is using. In the case of iMessage, it is using on-device AI to detect images that appear to be nudes; in the case of CSAM, it is comparing digital fingerprints with fingerprints generated from a user’s stored photos.

In neither case does anyone at Apple get to see any of the photos, with the sole exception of someone flagged for having multiple CSAM photos, when someone at Apple will manually check low-resolution copies to ensure they are true matches before law enforcement is informed.

There has also been confusion between privacy and misuse risks with the features as they stand today (which are nil to exceedingly low) and the potential for abuse by authoritarian governments at a future date. Cybersecurity experts have been warning about the latter, not the former.

Apple already attempted to address the repressive government concerns by launching only in the US for now, and stating that expansion would be on a country-by-country basis, factoring in the legislative environments in each. The FAQ now attempts to address this and other issues.

Apple CSAM FAQ

Apple has published a six-page FAQ designed to address some of the concerns that have been raised. It begins by acknowledging the mixed response.

We want to protect children from predators who use communication tools to recruit and exploit them, and limit the spread of Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM). Since we announced these features, many stakeholders including privacy organizations and child safety organizations have expressed their support of this new solution, and some have reached out with questions. This document serves to address these questions and provide more clarity and transparency in the process.

The company then underlines that the first two features are entirely separate.

What are the differences between communication safety in Messages and CSAM detection in iCloud Photos?

These two features are not the same and do not use the same technology.

Communication safety in Messages is designed to give parents and children additional tools to help protect their children from sending and receiving sexually explicit images in the Messages app. It works only on images sent or received in the Messages app for child accounts set up in Family Sharing. It analyzes the images on-device, and so does not change the privacy assurances of Messages. When a child account sends or receives sexually explicit images, the photo will be blurred and the child will be warned, presented with helpful resources, and reassured it is okay if they do not want to view or send the photo. As an additional precaution, young children can also be told that, to make sure they are safe, their parents will get a message if they do view it.

The second feature, CSAM detection in iCloud Photos, is designed to keep CSAM off iCloud Photos without providing information to Apple about any photos other than those that match known CSAM images. CSAM images are illegal to possess in most countries, including the United States. This feature only impacts users who have chosen to use iCloud Photos to store their photos. It does not impact users who have not chosen to use iCloud Photos. There is no impact to any other on-device data. This feature does not apply to Messages.

Other points stressed in the FAQ include:

iMessages to and from children are never shared with law enforcement

iMessages remain end-to-end encrypted

Children with abusive parents can safely seek help via iMessage if using only text

Parents are only notified if children aged 12 and under proceed despite a warning

CSAM fingerprint matches are manually reviewed before law enforcement is informed

The trickiest issue remains

The biggest concern raised by the EFF and others remains. While the system today only flags CSAM images, a repressive government could supply Apple with a database that contains other materials, such as the famous Tank Man photo in Tiananmen Square, which is censored in China.

Apple has responded to this by saying it would not allow this:

Could governments force Apple to add non-CSAM images to the hash list?

Apple will refuse any such demands. Apple’s CSAM detection capability is built solely to detect known CSAM images stored in iCloud Photos that have been identified by experts at NCMEC and other child safety groups. We have faced demands to build and deploy government-mandated changes that degrade the privacy of users before, and have steadfastly refused those demands. We will continue to refuse them in the future. Let us be clear, this technology is limited to detecting CSAM stored in iCloud and we will not accede to any government’s request to expand it. Furthermore, Apple conducts human review before making a report to NCMEC. In a case where the system flags photos that do not match known CSAM images, the account would not be disabled and no report would be filed to NCMEC.

That statement is, however, predicated on Apple having the legal freedom to refuse. In China, for example, Apple has been legally required to remove VPN, news, and other apps, and to store the iCloud data of Chinese citizens on a server owned by a government-controlled company.

There is no realistic way for Apple to promise that it will not comply with future requirements to process government-supplied databases of “CSAM images” that also include matches for materials used by critics and protestors. As the company has often said when defending its actions in countries like China, Apple complies with the law in each of the countries in which it operates.

Scanning App For iPhone and iPad Fast Scanning

While Notes and Files apps boast this scanning feature, they are not as fast as Prizmo. The app immediately identifies the object lying on your desk; for fun, you can try scanning a credit or debit card. You won’t be able to scan that as Prizmo recognizes your plastic money.

MacBook Air

The MacBook Air certainly isn’t expected to be the star of the show this year, but the lineup will receive some attention. It has been reported that Apple will discontinue the 11-inch model in order to direct its attention to the 12-inch MacBook and 13-inch MacBook Air. Some sources, however, have cast doubt as to the likelihood of this happening.

Should the 11-inch MacBook Air get discontinued, it’s possible that Apple will cut the price of the 13-inch model, as Ben speculated this morning. The 12-inch MacBook’s price point could also benefit from the death of the 11-inch Air, too.

Nevertheless, the MacBook Air clearly won’t be the focal point of this year’s changes, but some upgrades will occur to bring it up to par.

iMac

Much like the MacBook Air, the iMac isn’t expected to receive a major overhaul this year, though Apple is planning some under-the-hood changes to keep it somewhat up to date.

The biggest change will come to the graphics performance. Apple is said to be planning new options for GPUs from AMD, while other under-the-hood specs will likely also be bumped up. Design and scree specifications are expected to remain the same. The addition of USB-C is also possible.

External 5K Display

Apple officially discontinued its outdated and overpriced Thunderbolt Display earlier this year, paving the way for a newer and more capable model. It is expected that Apple will introduce a new 5K external display at its event this month that also includes a built-in GPU. We first reported on Apple’s plans for a 5K display with an integrated GPU earlier this year.

The display is expected to feature a 5K resolution of 5120 x 2880, while the powerful internal GPU will be able to assist lower-powered Macs in pushing that many pixels.

It’s unclear how Apple plans to price its new 5K display, but we should know more following the event next week. Don’t expect it to be cheap, though, given the $1000 price point of the Thunderbolt Display and the addition of a GPU.

One thing to note, however, is that the release date for this display has changed several times already, so it’s possible that Apple has indeed pushed it back again and we won’t see it at this year’s event.

MacBook Pro

The star of the show this month is widely expected to be the MacBook Pro. Apple’s “Pro” laptop hasn’t seen a major overhaul in 4 years and is well overdue for one, and the company certainly seems to have a lot planned for this year’s refresh.

First off, let’s talk design. The new MacBook Pro is expected to be much thinner and lighter than the current models, though it’s unlikely that they will feature a wedge design like the MacBook Air and 12-inch MacBook. Nevertheless, the overall footprint of the laptop is expected to smaller, while the trackpad will be slightly bigger.

The design changes extend to the port options, as well. The new MacBook Pros will likely ditch all of its traditional ports in favor of USB-C connectivity. MagSafe is also getting the axe this year, as charging can be done via USB-C.

The biggest change to the design, however, will be the addition of a new OLED touch display in replace of the standard function keys at the top of the keyboard. This display is expected to provide quick action buttons for common tasks that vary depending on which app is open. Apple is said to be working with third-party app developers to ensure that a variety of software is optimized for the new touch bar at launch, as well.

Touch ID is also expected to come to the MacBook Pro this year, likely being located on the power button of the machine. While Auto Unlock allows Apple Watch users to unlock their Mac when their Apple Watch is in close proximity, Touch ID will allow for all users to unlock their machine without typing in the actual password.

The MacBook Pro lineup will also get speed boosts under-the-hood. While specifics of the spec upgrades are unclear, Apple is expected to offer one of AMD’s Polaris GPUs and Intel’s Skylake processors. The design of the Polaris GPU is small enough to fit in the smaller footprint of the Pro, while also offering the best combination of power and battery usage.

AirPods

Another thing we should expect to see at next week’s event is the release of Apple’s truly wireless AirPods, or at least the announcement of an actual release date. At the iPhone 7 event last month, Apple teased that AirPods would be available in late October, but the company has not said anything since.

If Apple sticks to its word, then we should expect an AirPods release sooner rather than later.

Odds and Ends

A refresh of Apple’s AirPort accessories isn’t out of the question for this year’s event. The AirPort Express is still stuck on 802.11n, while the AirPort Extreme and Apple’s Mac lineup have been updated to support the newer and faster 802.11ac. So it seems logical for the AirPort Express to finally receive that update.

Additionally, it’s possible that Apple introduces new peripherals, such as a new Magic Keyboard with an OLED touch bar. While it’s unlikely, new colors of the peripherals would likely be met with fanfare, such as rose gold, gold, space grey, and jet black.

This is speculative, though, and likely won’t be a big portion of Apple’s announcements.

Mac Pro/Mac Mini (or what not to expect)

While minor under-the-hood refreshes aren’t out of the question, it’s unlikely that Apple has anything major planned for the Mac Pro or Mac Mini.

Wrap-up

It’s clear that the MacBook Pro and external display will be the star of Apple’s October event this year, and rightfully so. Both are due for their respective upgrades and it sounds as if Apple has quite a bit planned for each.

Sorting Odd And Even Elements Separately Javascript

In our problem statement we have to sort odd and even elements separately with the help of Javascript functionalities. So for doing this task we will use for loops and bubble sort for sorting odd and even numbers separately.

Understanding the problem statement

The problem statement is to write a Javascript function that will help to sort odd and even numbers in a given array. For example if we have an array [2, 3, 5, 4] then we will first sort even indexed elements [3, 4] and then sort the odd indexed elements in the array [2, 5]. After sorting these two subarrays we will merge these two arrays to get the resultant sorted array.

Logic for the given problem

To sort the elements we will basically use bubble sort to sort even indexed and odd indexed elements separately. So in every iteration of the loop we will set swapped values to false. If we make a swap then set it to true. Then we will loop through the odd indexed array and do the same procedure and set swap to true if we have swapped the elements if the first element is greater than the second element. At the end we sorted the array.

Algorithm

Step 1 − Declare a function called sortOddEven which is using a parameter of array of length n.

Step 2 − Use bubble sort algorithm to sort the even indexed and odd indexed elements separately.

Step 3 − Loop through the elements of the array. Then set swapped to false.

Step 4 − Loop even indexed elements and compare every pair of even indexed elements and swap them if they are in the wrong order. If we have swapped the items then set swapped to true.

Step 5 − Then loop odd indexed elements and compare every pair of odd numbers starting index from 1 and swap them if they are in the incorrect order. If we have swapped the items then set the swapped value to true.

Step 6 − Repeat the step four and five until no swaps required in the iteration.

Step 7 − Return the final result array which contains all sorted elements of the input array.

The time complexity of the bubble sort algorithm is O(n^2) in which n is the length of the array. But we are sorting the even indexed and odd indexed items separately so the actual number of comparisons and swaps is half the size of it, so the actual time complexity of the algorithm is equal to O(n).

Conclusion

In the above code we have implemented a solution to get the sorted array by sorting the even and odd indexed elements separately in Javascript. It is simple and easy to understand. And this algorithm is well suited for small sized arrays and not efficient for large arrays.
