Updates to Google Image Search on mobile and desktop are rolling out on Thursday, September 27th.
The forthcoming updates were announced today at Google’s 20th anniversary event in San Francisco, and include a slew of new features on mobile, as well as a new user interface on desktop.
Google Image Search Updates on Mobile Stories in Google ImagesA Stories feature, similar to what has been popularized by Instagram and Snapchat, is coming to Google Image Search on mobile.
Google’s Danny Sullivan shared:
“Google Images is improving computer vision to bring more organization to content, in particular AI-powered Stories about people that will be coming.”
Here’s an example of what it will look like:
In order to bring this feature to life, Google will surface AMP Stories in image search on mobile.
AMP Stories can be created by publishers, and going forward they will also be constructed by Google itself using AI.
To start with, Google will begin creating stories about notable people such as celebrities and athletes.
Similar to stories on other platforms, users can tap through for more information. Web articles can also be linked to from the stories.
Google Lens SupportGoogle Lens support is coming to Google Image Search.
Many users may already be familiar with Google Lens, which currently exists as a dedicated app and as part of Google Photos.
Google Lens allows users to learn more about the world around them by taking photos with their phone’s camera.
This could include taking a photo of a landmark to learn about its history, taking a photo of a product in someone’s home to learn where it can be purchased, and more.
This feature will be rolling out in the coming weeks.
Featured Videos in SearchNew featured videos in search results will deliver more useful visual content, as Google is now able to deeply understand the content of a video.
With featured videos, Google takes its understanding of a topic and uses it to display the most relevant videos for related subtopics.
For example, someone searching for Zion National Park might see videos for related attractions, like Angels Landing or the Narrows.
Other NotesDuring today’s press event Google touted some of the improvements it has made to image search over the past year.
In another example Sullivan shared, Google highlighted how the ranking of images has changed to provide more actionable content.
Google also added captions to image search this past year, which better describes the content of the images for searchers.
Authority of a web page is a ranking signal for images
Google’s algorithm for ranking image search results has been overhauled, placing more importance on the authority of the web page where an image lives.
That company also notes that it now prioritizes fresher content in image search results.
Another recent change to ranking images in search results includes Google prioritizing sites where the image is central to the page, and higher up on the page.
More context around images in search results
An update which rolls out this week will see Google adding more context to images, including captions that show the title of the web page where each image is published.
Google will also suggest related search terms at the top of the page.
If this seems familiar it’s because Google has already introduced this additional context to image search on mobile. It’s now being brought to desktop as well.

A Guide To Google’s Advanced Image Search
Searching for images on Google is a simple process.
Many of us can quickly find a picture of something we are searching for by performing a basic Google image search.
This is the standard image search functionality that most of us are used to seeing when we’re looking for a photo on Google.
It is an extremely common search result format, that clearly layouts and categorizes various types of image results.

The basic search bar appears for you to enter your query.
You can filter image results in the following ways:
Image SizeHere you can choose from large, medium, small, or an icon.
This can help to quickly locate an image based on the specific size you are after.

Image ColorYou have the option of black and white, transparent, or a specific color such as blue, red, yellow, etc.

Google Advanced Image SearchNow, by navigating to Google’s Advanced Image Search, you will find that this tool uses all of the filters listed above, and then some.
If you still cannot find a specific image that you are after with the basic filters, this is a great tool to try.
This Exact Word or PhraseThis option lets you find images after inputting multiple keywords, to narrow down and specify your search further.
This is very similar to using quotes when searching for something online.
Aspect RatioThis feature allows you to search specifically for certain image aspect ratios.
So, if you wanted to see an image that should be wide, tall, panoramic, etc., you can find those images here.
RegionThis feature allows you to see which photos are public in a specific part of the world.
This makes it easy to pin down photos from places you plan to visit, etc.
Site or Domain SafeSearchEnable or disable SafeSearch to block inappropriate content.
File TypeIf you are after specific file types, you can pick which image file format Google should look for (e.g., JPG, PNG, SVG).

Update: Google has confirmed this issue is fixed.
Today we became aware of an issue that impacted some navigational and site: operator searches. We investigated & have since fixed the bug. Contrary to some speculation, this did not target particular sites or political ideologies….

Google’s Danny Sullivan also quells some speculation that this issue specifically targeted particular sites.
“Today’s issue affected sites representing a range of content and different viewpoints,” Sullivan says in a separate tweet.

The ‘site:’ command is designed to help searchers find all pages within a site that contain a specific word or phrase.
It’s a command that that is commonly used by SEOs to perform various tasks, but the command can be used by anyone.
If you’re using the ‘site:’ command to find content within your own site, be aware that some or all content may not be found regardless of whether it’s properly indexed.
This is not an issue with Google’s index, it’s an issue with the command itself.
Content that currently cannot be found with the ‘site:’ command can still be surfaced with other queries.
At least that’s true according to what we know at this point.
After Google’s investigation it may come to light that there are other issues related to this one, but let’s not worry about that until we have to.

If you are seeing a message like 801881cd, 80188265, or 801881d0 when you update your Windows Phone, the obviously you have a problem. It’s possible to solve it with some basic troubleshooting in order to get rid of these annoying updates. Microsoft has officially provided fixes and we’re going to put them all together so that you could get help for your problems.
Fix error code 801881cdThis error appears when you don’t have enough storage space on your phone to install the update. So here’s how to fix it:
Remove some media files (videos, music, and photos) or apps to make room for the update. You can connect to your computer and move your media files there, and you can always reinstall apps from the Store. Keep in mind that deleting an app, even temporarily, will erase app data, such as saved progress in a game.
Fix Error code 80004004The uninstall option of this error is greyed out and that seems to be an annoying issue. What can you do in order to fix it?
Reinstall your apps in order to minimize the ‘losses’

Fix error code 801882cbThis particular error is caused by troubles connecting to a network. Here are some potential workarounds:
Make sure that your phone has a good connection to the Internet. The best thing to do is connect to Wi-Fi so you can download without having to worry about possible cellular data charges. If you can’t connect to Wi-Fi and want to update using cellular data, tap Download when prompted to download using cellular data.

All these appear because there was a temporary issue with a server or your Internet connection during the update. Here is the solution:
Make sure you’re connected to the Internet and try again. It’s best to connect to Wi-Fi so you can avoid possible cellular data charges.

Restart your phone and try downloading the update again.
These are mostly common fixes, but these are official solutions provided by Microsoft. Also, the company suggests to pay attention to the following things, as well:

Wait a bit – Many errors are temporary. If you try again, there’s a good chance the error won’t repeat itself.
Restart your phone – If your phone freezes during an update, you can restart your phone to get your update back on track.

What To Expect (And Not To Expect) At Apple’s Ipad/Mac Event Tomorrow
It looks like Apple’s event tomorrow will focus on new iPad models as rumored, but there are bound to be a lot of announcements beyond just the new iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3. Below we’ve put together some of our expectations for other possibilities at the event, including likely announcements for new Macs, software updates and a couple of possible surprises you might not be expecting.
iPad Air 2 & iPad mini 3: The majority of rumors leading up to tomorrow’s event have been focused on a second-generation iPad Air. It’s now all but confirmed with our discovery earlier today of iPad Air 2 and iPad mini 3 images in an iOS 8.1 iPad user guide. The guide confirmed nearly identical designs to previous generations as well as Touch ID and the Burst camera mode previously only available on iPhones.
Based on our own reports and several leaks in recent months, we’re expecting the new iPad Air 2 will gain a slightly thinner design, a more efficient A8 processor, the M8 chip and Touch ID from iPhone 6, and other improved camera and display components. Rumor has it that the new Air will be offered in a gold color option previously only available on iPhones. The refreshed iPad mini 3, on the other hand, will reportedly be more of a minor spec bump but include Touch ID.
A Keyboard Smartcover would also be nice. We’ve certainly seen a lot of patent work in that area, but alas it is probably one of those products that Apple reveals across all of 2023. Earlier today Google announced its HTC-made Nexus 9 tablet which works with a magnetic folio-style keyboard case, and Microsoft’s Surface has long enjoyed the benefit of the keyboard cover.
OS X Yosemite: As much as this event is being touted as Apple’s iPad event, we’re also expecting Apple to dedicate a lot of stage time to Mac and OS X Yosemite announcements. We reported as far back as July that Apple was planning a late October release of Yosemite, the latest version of its Mac operating system that has been in beta testing since its unveiling earlier in the year at WWDC. Tomorrow we’ll likely get specific launch dates for the public release if not a release tomorrow. If it is any indication, Yosemite Apps are hitting the store 24 hours early.
iWork/iLife/Final Cut: Not only will we get specifics on a release date, we might also hear about new features like the Photos app that Apple originally said would arrive early next year to replace Aperture and iPhoto. An update on iWork and iLife apps for OS X Yosemite and the new iCloud Drive service would also be good candidates for Apple’s Yosemite portion of its event tomorrow. We’ve already seen what may be the new icons for the apps. We reported in July that Apple was said to be preparing updates to both iMovie and Final Cut Pro to bring support for editing, exporting, and importing video taken with 4K resolution-capable cameras. That would be a great feature to introduce beside new higher-resolution desktops…
Retina iMac: The star of the show as far as Macs go tomorrow will likely be Apple’s 4K Retina iMac that we first reported back in July was in development. Our report was backed up by other reliable supply chain leaks pointing to a new higher-resolution 27-inch iMac with some claiming a 27-inch iMac with a resolution of 5120×2880 could launch by year’s end. There’s still a possibility the 21-inch model could get a mention alongside the introduction of the expected 27-inch Retina iMac tomorrow, but the latest from often reliable KGI says a 21-inch model won’t be released until early 2023.
12-inch MacBook: While Apple is indeed working on a 12-inch Retina Macbook, as we first reported back in July, at this point an appearance tomorrow is up in the air. We noted in earlier reports that the slimmer 12-inch MacBook could be pushed back into 2023 due to delays with Intel chips and yesterday analysts from the often reliable KGI reported the same. Earlier this month The Wall Street Journal reported that production of a 12-inch Retina MacBook wouldn’t start until December, another hint that it might not make an appearance tomorrow. A Retina iMac could certainly be enough to carry the show for the Mac/Yosemite portion of things, and an updated Mac mini is another possibility…
Apple already announced a number of banking and retail partners for the service. A recent leak from Walgreens pointed to an Oct. 18 launch date for the service, while banking partner USAA said it will begin supporting the service on Nov. 7. The later date could be part of Apple’s second wave of launch partners, as USAA is listed in the coming soon category on Apple’s site alongside PNC, Navy Federal Credit Union, Barclays, and USBank. Initial banking launch partners listed by Apple include Citi, Bank of America, Capital One, Wells Fargo, Chase, and American Express.
12-inch iPad: Another product rumored to be in Apple’s pipeline is a 12-inch iPad that some are referring to as the iPad Pro. It didn’t appear alongside the new iPad Air and iPad mini in the leaked iOS 8.1 guide today, and recent reports from Bloomberg claimed the 12.9-inch iPad won’t arrive until early next year.
Split-screen multitasking: We first reported that Apple was working on a split-screen multitasking mode for iPad back in May. While it seems like a perfect feature for a rumored 12.9-inch iPad, there’s certainly a possibility Apple could show off the feature tomorrow as a new standout feature for the iPad Air 2.
Mac mini: One last possibility for Apple’s event tomorrow is a refreshed Mac mini. We found references on Apple’s own website earlier this year, and later reports claimed a refreshed Mac mini would arrive this month. Previous rumors said the update would include Intel Iris graphics and 802.11ac wireless networking, although that was the same report that claimed the new machine would launch back in February. The current Mac mini that Apple is still selling was last updated in late 2012.
Retina Thunderbolt display: This might be my wishful thinking long shot, but if Apple is ready to start selling the Retina 4K resolution iMac as everyone is expecting, it wouldn’t be a stretch to imagine it has panels ready for a similar update to its aging Thunderbolt display. Many were disappointed that we didn’t get an updated Thunderbolt display alongside the introduction of the all-new Mac Pro last year, and the current Thunderbolt display hasn’t received a major upgrade since 2011. Apple last made silent minor tweaks to the Thunderbolt display in July 2012 but otherwise has remained the same since its introduction over 3 years ago.
Apple TV: While it’s also been ‘way too long’ since the last Apple TV update, the long-awaited Apple TV overhaul isn’t expected until early next year. The current generation Apple TV features the same single-core A5 chip as the iPhone 4s and current iPod touch, and while a minor revision was issued to this product, it dates back to the March 2012 iPad 3 event.

Now that we’ve seen the boosts in the change-over from Nexus 7’s original iteration to its reboot, and have heard Google confirm that Samsung will be taking command on a second Nexus 10, it’s high time we went hunting for the build on this next-generation companion to the smaller tablet. While virtual ink on the announcement for the Nexus 7 isn’t even really dry yet, it having been announced less than 24 hours ago (if you don’t count the leaks), a new version of this tablet’s 10.1-inch tablet companion can be given a run-down based on what we’ve seen from ASUS, the maker of the smaller slate.
With the Nexus 10’s current abilities, it should by all means be ready to continue to compete with today’s best comparably-sized slates without a problem. So why make another? Isn’t a 10.055-inch liquid crystal panel with 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution enough? That’s ever-so-slightly less sharp than the Nexus 7’s reboot, mind you, at 300.24 (while the Nexus 7 sits at 323 PPI with its same amount of pixels in a smaller space.)
Perhaps its time that Samsung move forward with a non-Exynos processor, then, is that it? The original Nexus 10 works with a dual-core Exynos 5250 processor (currently re-named Exynos 5 Dual, if you’re looking it up). Meanwhile the Samsung Galaxy S 4 (international edition, that is) – a smartphone, for goodness sake – works with what Samsung calls its Exynos 5 Octa.
While we’ve not had two devices with the same specifications save the processor to benchmark these two processors against one another, it should be noted that the dual-core version was introduced well before the “Octa”, and that they work with completely different GPUs. Furthermore, the Exynos 5 Octa works with two sets of 2 cores rather than 1, working with one set of ARM Cortex-A15 cores as well as a set of ARM Cortex-A7 cores for backup. Meanwhile the Exynos 5 Dual works with just one set of ARM Cortex-A15 cores.
So what will the Nexus 10’s reboot work with instead?
How about a brand new Exynos 5 Octa “Evolved”? This update to the original Exynos 5 quad-core “Octa” that we’ve seen in the international Galaxy S 4, and has been tipped to be being prepared for Samsung’s other hero smartphone line in the Samsung Galaxy Note III.
With Samsung pushing their own processor to the original Nexus 10, it’s not only possible that they’ll do the same thing with a second iteration, it just makes good sense.
As for the rest of the specifications – you can probably guess what’ll happen. Though we can’t imagine Google aiming to ramp up the density of this tablet’s display again since the only competitor it has at the moment is the Nexus 7, you never know! The tablet is a little bit unwieldily, looking more like an extension of the style of the Galaxy Nexus than it does a current-gen Nexus tablet – perhaps a bit of a smoothing effect is in order.
Something like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 10.1, perhaps?
