Ghost Robotics, makers of a family of four-legged robots called Q-UGVs, has made dog-like robots for the military for a few years. These robots have been seen everywhere from trade show floors in Detroit to guarding an Air Force base in Florida. But at the Association of the United States Army’s 2023 annual conference, held in Washington, DC on October 11-13, the Q-UGV on display featured a rifle mounted in a pod on its back.

This is what it looks like:

The gun pod, which is attached to the robot’s torso from the center, transformed it from a biomechanical oddity into a fearsome chimera, a weapon more familiar to the world of video games than a real one on a battlefield.

Those applications, packed into dense jargon-rich phrases, start with “ISR/Comms,” or intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and communications. All of these are tasks that a robot dog, equipped with cameras and other sensors, can do well, provided a human operator is on hand with a tablet to receive the communications and scouting.

But while some tasks seem like a good fit for a robot to reduce risk to humans, the signature innovation on display at the AUSA floor turned the robot into a threat. The Q-UGV is also listed as offering one other essential military function: “lethality.”

Starting in 2023, under Secretary of Defense James Mattis, “Lethality” became a focal point of military product marketing. Whereas in the past, military contractors would talk about how a weapon allows soldiers to meet mission objectives or protects the warfighter, “lethality” as a new buzzword meant everything had to be explained in terms of that ultimate military objective: killing people, in accordance with the laws of war and the task assigned.

In the case of the Q-UGV, lethality is straightforward. It means putting a gun on a robot dog.

Built by SWORD International, a Nevada-based specialty rifle firm, the gun on the Q-UGV uses 6.5mm Creedmoor ammo. With a relatively new caliber, first developed in the 2000s, the Creedmoor can fit into the same magazines as the 7.62mm NATO cartridge, though it needs to be fired out of a different barrel. With the 6.5 Creedmoor, Ghost promises the gun can offer precision fire at distances of over 3,900 feet.

Designed for sport shooting targets at long range, the bullet allowed for a long-range performance from both dedicated sniper rifles and standard infantry rifles, and gave them increased accuracy. The Creedmoor has been adopted by both the Department of Homeland Security and Special Operations snipers, and its use on the Q-UGV is similar.

In other words: This robot dog is built not just as a scout, but as a scout sniper.

What remains to be seen is how much autonomy this armed robot dog might have in the field—a key consideration when the bot has a gun onboard. Scouting functions, where the robot is just a mobile platform covered in sensors, are great tasks to automate. Navigating a robot is time- and labor-intensive, especially if it needs to be directly piloted. Moving that to a machine-run process, with a human supervisor checking in to see what the robot has sent back, lets the robot collect useful information without tying down soldiers.

Putting a gun on the robot almost certainly requires bringing the human operator back into direct control over the machine, responsible for aiming and authorizing shots. That could still prove to be a battlefield boon. If the Q-UGV can get into a difficult-to-reach position, it could set up an ambush. With an armed robot drawing fire, human soldiers could maneuver into better positions and enemies waste ammunition tracking down a robot. In short, on the immediate level of what helps give an edge in a firefight, a gun firing from the back of a waist-height robot gives a squad commander a host of options.

The Q-UGV’s quadrupedal appearance is unsettling, but the greater implications of arming a semi-autonomous dog-shaped robot are much more unsettling, because it turns the robot into a sniper rifle piloted by humans. Or worse, one that isn’t. (Update on Oct. 19: Ghost Robotics says both the weapon and the Q-UGV have to be manually operated, and that what limited autonomy the Q-UGV has is focused on obstacle avoidance and waypoint navigation.)

How To Teach A Robot To Improvise

Self-piloted drones have become sophisticated enough to land on moving aircraft carriers, but put a single unexpected tree in the way, and they will crash. Now a five-university group that includes specialists in biology, computer vision and robotics is trying to teach drones to dodge obstacles on the fly. Working with $7.5 million from the Office of Naval Research, the scientists aim to build an autonomous, fixed-wing surveillance drone that can navigate through an unfamiliar city or forest at 35 miles an hour.

The group’s inspiration is the pigeon. Hardy, plentiful and receptive to training, the birds are easy to study. In flight, they estimate the distance between themselves and objects ahead by quickly processing blurry, low-resolution images, just as a drone will need to do. And, crucially, they have a tendency to make decisions at the last moment—within five feet of an obstacle.

Step one is to teach robots to differentiate between obstacles and empty chúng tôi the researchers have taught the drone to see, they will need to teach it to make decisions. That involves grappling with the inherent ambiguity of visual data—with deciding whether that pattern of pixels ahead is a tree branch or a shadow. Drew Bagnell and Martial Hebert, roboticists at Carnegie Mellon University, are developing algorithms that will help the robot deal with visual ambiguity the way humans do: by making educated guesses. “They can say, ‘I’m 99 percent sure there’s a tree between 12 meters and 13 meters away,’ and make a decision anyway,” Bagnell says.

It will take a lot of computing power to make those decisions. The drone will have to process 30 images per second while contemplating its next move. LeCun says that a processor that can run his algorithms at a trillion operations per second would do the job, but the challenge is to build all that power into a computer light and efficient enough to fly. The best candidate is a processor that LeCun developed with Eugenio Culurciello of Purdue University: a low-power computer the size of a DVD case called NeuFlow, which LeCun is confident he’ll be able to speed up to a trillion operations per second by the group’s 2024 deadline.

Once they’ve built a robot that can learn, see and make decisions fast enough to avoid obstacles, they still have to teach it to fly. Russ Tedrake, an MIT roboticist, is already using motion-capture cameras and a full-scale prototype of the final drone to model the maneuvers it will need to perform. If the team succeeds, the result will be a robot that can descend into a forest and lose today’s drones in the trees.

FILTERING THE WORLD

As the drone flies, its onboard camera will feed video to software that applies a series of filters to each frame. The first filters pick up patterns among small groups of pixels that indicate simple features, like edges. Next, another series of filters looks for larger patterns, building upward from individual pixels to objects to complex visual scenes. Within hundredths of a second, the software builds a low-resolution map of the scene ahead. Finally, it will compare the objects in view to ones it has “seen” before, classifying them as soon as it has enough information to make an educated guess.

So, what does make an effective landing page for an Ecommerce site? Well, I’m going to give a typical consultant’s answer – “it depends”; on the campaign and your goal for the landing page. That’s not being evasive, it’s the truth; not all landing pages are born equal. For example, some marketers invest in prize draws and competitions as marketing tactics to drive data capture for their eCRM programs, so the landing page needs to focus on making it quick and easy to enter. Typically ecommerce landing pages are used for tactical marketing campaigns (e.g. from AdWords, Display Re-marketing or Email marketing) and are  designed to drive sales making use of existing site page templates.

A good ecommerce landing page should satisfy the following criteria:

The creative design is consistent with the marketing campaign that generated the visit.

The copy and CTA are consistent with the marketing campaign.

The page is structured to make it easy for the visitor to access key information and make an informed decision.

There is a clear onward journey should the visitor decide to take further action.

Typically there are 3 ways to generate a landing pages:1. Create a bespoke new page for a marketing campaign.This gives the greatest creative control and allows you to tailor the message and the content to suit individual campaigns. It also allows you to be flexible in the design pattern by customising HTML, avoiding the dependency on existing page templates.

Please note that you can create a bespoke page on your website and also on social media. Facebook is used by marketers for prize draws and competitions, as this type of campaign is well-suited to the social channel,

2. Use an existing webpage.

3. Set-up a custom search results page.

This is used when there isn’t an exact match web page already existing. Retailers create a custom search results set using a pre-defined site search term, then use the search results page URL in the marketing campaign. This can work well for custom gift lists.

In this blog post I look at case studies of what I consider to be good and bad to help illustrate these 3 options.

A caveat I need to point out – without access to the web analytics data behind these landing pages, I can’t validate my analysis. My evaluation is based on my own experience of optimising landing pages and the wealth of case study material I have read over the years. Still, it would be foolish to claim to be 100% right….

Bespoke Ecommerce landing page examples

Email campaigns often require new landing pages, especially for lifestyle brands where promotions aren’t always related to specific products.

Another example from Heritage Personalised Stationery demonstrates a well-structured landing page with strong USPs and a clear CTA but failure to pull through the main campaign message. They have created a sub-domain for this product that is also linked to from their main domain homepage.

Note how the landing page helps set expectations of what the customer has to do; it clearly marks out the 4 steps required to order. This is a useful technique because unexpected multi-stage order processes can increase abandonment, so it’s sensible to make this transparent.

Existing web pages

Perhaps this is deliberate and testing has revealed higher conversion when customers see the whole range vs. a filtered page with black only dresses. However, from a good practice perspective this isn’t intuitive as it forces the visitor to take the further action of refining by colour to get the product list they were searching for.

Persun on the other hand deep links you to its Black Cocktail Dresses landing page. They have added helpful text that explains that all the dresses you see are available in black, even if the image showing isn’t an exact colour match. This isn’t ideal as you would expect the website to default to the image of the black version of each product on this page.

What’s interesting to see is that none of these examples uses enclosed landing pages. By enclosed, I mean pages that remove all the standard site navigation elements and focus purely on the campaign message and CTA. This is something I’ve seen B2B marketers use more often.

Interestingly, they use a pop-up offering a £10 welcome gift that requires email sign-up. I’m not a fan of disrupting the user journey like this. However, given that this is shown to customers who have visited but not yet bought, it could work in persuading people to sign-up and get that discount. I’m not convinced because the £10 voucher isn’t compelling given the price range for sofas & armchairs.  I’d love to see data on how many people sign-up and spend vs. exit.

I love this example from Zappos (thanks to @dannydenhard for suggesting this). It’s for a product-level landing page and ticks the box for many reasons:

Nice big, high quality product picture.

Free shipping message is prominent and the delivery promise is reinforced at the top of the page.

Good visual sign for the mind blowing range of colour options (which display a thumbnail when you mouse over).

Quick links on left to reveal more product information.

When you scroll down you can access product recommendations and customer reviews.

Custom search results

It’s hard to find examples as these landing pages disappear quite quickly as they’re often used for short-term tactical campaigns, such as paid search activity around events.

I know a retailer who used this solution every week for their ‘Deals of the Week’ promotion. They set-up a site search term ‘dealofweek’ and then each week associated the relevant products with this search term. They then used the site search URL as the link in their marketing campaigns. Sadly they’re not doing this anymore so I can’t show you.

Key take-away

My key take-away for you regarding ecommerce landing pages is to ensure there is consistency with the campaign creative and content.

The goal is to make your landing page easy to use and take action on – so think about visitor intent before deciding the optimal layout. And make sure you test – there is no reason not to do basic AB tests even if you don’t have a specialist testing tool. Look at Google Analytics Content Experiments and do some basic testing to learn how it can help you improve landing page performance.

Scenario 2: Multiple people sharing the same laptop/s

It’s a common situation in households across the world. Two laptops for a family of four may have seemed plenty under usual circumstances, but juggling work, home schooling and free time means strict schedules have had to be imposed to avoid complete chaos. 

In this scenario, I’d recommend buying at least one new device as soon as possible.

Fortunately, many of the entries in our best budget laptop chart are now in stock, and in many cases you can pick up two great devices for under £1,000. 

Scenario 3: Laptop not working properly, but looks fine

There are various reasons why a laptop might not be working properly, and it’s incredibly frustrating when you don’t know the cause. 

Whether it’s a device that won’t charge, ports that won’t recognise anything or a dreaded black screen, it can be tempting to simply go ahead and buy a new device. 

However, we’d encourage caution, and only invest if you’re sure you can afford it. There are plenty of great budget laptops out there, which should ensure you can get a great device without breaking the bank.

Scenario 4: Laptop needs repaired

If you’ve tried many of the potential fixes for your device but nothing seems to be working, you’ll need to contact a professional to try and get it sorted. 

It might seem like a lot of hassle, but their technical expertise might mean a fix is relatively inexpensive. Many won’t charge unless they feel there’s something they can do to solve the issue either, 

Depending on where you live there may still be restrictions on going into someone else’s home to repair tech, but you can always send it via secure postage. This means you’ll need a back-up device to work on in the meantime, but it’s something worth considering. 

Changed or planning on changing profession

Scenario 5: Long-serving laptop needs replacing soon

This has parallels with my current situation. The laptop I’ve had is nearly six years old, and while it’s served me extremely well it’s starting to show its age.

Naturally I’ve been considering what I’d look for in a replacement, most notably whether to go with Mac or Windows. 

My current line of thinking is that if I can eke just a few more months out of a laptop that still gets regular software updates, the market will be in a much better position for me to make an informed decision. 

If you can make do with your current device for the time being I’d recommend it, but if it’s hampering your productivity it’s probably time to upgrade. 

Another thing to consider is if you’ve changed or are planning on changing professions in the near future. Perhaps your sturdy business laptop now feels like overkill, or a lightweight ultrabook simply doesn’t offer enough power for your needs. 

These are both good cases for buying a new laptop, but it might be worth holding off if you can manage in the short term.

Robotics Engineer at NewSpace Research and Technologies Key Responsibilities:

Good working experience in the robotics / augmented reality domain

Experience of coding in an object-oriented language like CPP, C# (Knowledge of Java would be a plus)

Good knowledge of deploying software on hardware platforms like Snapdragon, Nvidia Jetson, Nano, etc. with strong coordination and management skills, ability to motivate others

Should have worked on Linux/Android platform for software development

Experience in hardware design/ PCB design from the ground up would be a plus.

Key Skillsets:

Should have worked on SLAM / V-SLAM

EKF/UKF based localization

Introductory knowledge of CV-ML algorithms

Should have worked with 3D cameras integration on Linux / Android platforms.

Basic Requirement:

Bachelor’s Degree (Robotics/Mechatronics) in Engineering. Advanced degree preferred

4+ years of relevant experience.
