What Are Runtime Errors? Their Causes And How To Fix Them?

A Runtime Error is an error that occurs at the time of running or executing a program. When this error occurs, the program may hang or crash displaying an error message. There are many reasons for a runtime error, like when the program enters an infinite loop, it triggers the runtime error. Sometimes, it also occurs due to the user’s fault. For example, a program requires a numerical value to process the result, but if the user enters any value other than the required one, say, alphabetic character, the program may show a runtime error.

Why and when do runtime errors occur?

There are many reasons for which the users get runtime errors on their computers. We will describe the most significant reasons here:

Memory leak.

Programming errors.

Incomplete installation.

Corrupt registry.

1] Memory leak

A memory leak is the most common cause of a runtime error on a Windows computer. It occurs when a program incorrectly manages the memory allocations, such as consuming more RAM without freeing it. A memory leak also occurs when the running code cannot access an object stored in the memory.

2] Programming errors

Programming errors also cause runtime errors. When a software is in the development phase, runtime errors can be found during the debugging process so that the developer can correct them before it is being released. But if any bug is left in the software by mistake, it can cause runtime errors. In such a case, the runtime errors can only be solved by downloading the update patches from the developer’s website.

Fix: AppModel Runtime Errors 57, 87, 490, etc.

3] Incomplete installation

Sometimes when a user is installing a program, the installer quits abruptly. There are many reasons for this interruption like power failure, system hangs, etc. This results in incomplete installation which may cause runtime errors on the system.

Fix: AppModel Runtime Errors 65, 69, and 79.

4] Corrupt registry

A corrupted or damaged registry can cause programs to malfunction due to which you may get a runtime error. There are many causes for the registry damage. One of the main reasons is a manual change in the registry. Hence, you should be careful while editing the registry keys. Backing up the registry before making any change to it is always be the best practice.

How to fix a Runtime Error on Windows 11/10

Because there are many different runtime errors, the method to fix them is not the same. We are listing here some general methods that may help you solve most of the runtime errors.

Install the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package.

Run DISM command and SFC scan.

Troubleshoot in Clean Boot State.

1] Install the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package

Some users have reported that they have started getting runtime errors after updating Windows 11/10. The error message that they received is:

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

Runtime Error!

Program: C:Users….

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way.

Please contact the application’s support team for more information.

According to the users, the popup window showing the error message arrives every time they turn ON their computer and comes back again if they close the window. Such a runtime error occurs due to a software problem or when the runtime components of the Visual C++ libraries are missing.

In such a condition, installing the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package after uninstalling the existing one may help. Follow the below-listed steps:

Launch Control Panel and go to “Programs and Features.”

Scroll down the list to find Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.

Now, download the latest Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package from the Microsoft official website.

Install it and restart your computer.

This works in most cases.

2] Run DISM command and SFC scan

System File Checker (SFC) tool is used to scan and repair the corrupted files, whereas, DISM (Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool) is used to repair the corrupted Windows system image files. Running these tools will help you fix the runtime errors.

To run System File Checker, execute the following command in an elevated CMD:

sfc /scannow

To run DISM, open Command Prompt as an administrator and type the following command and press Enter.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

The DISM tool uses Windows update to fix the corrupted files.

3] Troubleshoot in Clean Boot State

Sometimes a third-party program may be the culprit. In this case, performing a clean boot may help troubleshoot the problem.

Clean Boot will help you identify if there is a third-party or startup application on your system that is causing the runtime error.

Hope this post guides you in the right direction.

How To Fix The Taskbar Flashing And Going Blank After Updating Windows 10.

Windows 10 has a long track record of problematic and troublesome updates with countless major and minor updates causing a range of different problems over the years. So much so that Microsoft has had to cancel the rollout of major updates several times. Although updates are cancelled quite often in order for things like this to be fixed, there are times when minor updates slip through with just as many issues.

To remove a problematic Windows 10 update you’ll need to do the following.

Note: As I had already removed KB5003214 I had to use an older update as a reference for this guide. Make sure you remove KB5003214, not the update shown in the image.

Even if you have already removed the update using the steps shown above, you’ll probably want to pause updates for a little while as Windows 10 will automatically download the same update in a few days time. You can use the method shown above whenever you think an update has caused issues on your system.

How do you stop Windows 10 downloading and installing KB5003214 again?

To postpone future updates on Windows 10 you’ll need to do the following. Keep in mind that you can only pause updates for up to 7 days at a time. On the 7th day, you can pause updates for another 7 days.

Annoyingly, you will have to remember to do this for the next few weeks as Microsoft will probably take a little while to fix this issue.

Nine times out of ten Microsoft will fix the issue after a couple of weeks, however, it isn’t something you want to be dealing with until they get around to solving the problem.

Qr Codes Are Everywhere Now. Here’s How To Use Them.

The pandemic and our desire to minimize contact with objects and surfaces as much as possible has spread the use of Quick Response (QR) codes.

You can quickly and easily scan these square monochrome patterns on your phone, making them the perfect way to check into a venue or look at a restaurant’s menu, for example.

How QR codes work

While you might have only heard about them recently, this technology has been around since the 1990s. They’re essentially a type of code that holds information in a form that other hardware and software can understand. In the same way that a store checks barcodes to identify the prices of various goods, you can scan a QR code to launch a website, register at a doctor’s office, sign into a service, get a Wi-Fi password, or install an app.

[Related: How to easily share Wi-Fi passwords]

Scanners can only read standard barcodes in one direction, top to bottom. But your phone can read QR codes in two directions: top to bottom, and left to right. This means these patterns can contain significantly more information—just about any type of data, and up to about 4,000 characters of text.

You might be surprised at how easily your phone can read QR codes. The three black squares in the corners of the graphic tell your phone where the code is, before the actual scanning takes place. This means angles aren’t usually a problem, and you won’t need to get the framing exactly right or have a perfectly steady hand.

This technology can be really useful, but don’t go down the street scanning every QR code you find. There is potential for abuse from shady operators, mainly through attempts to send you to websites designed to capture login details or install malware on your phone. As long as your device is running up-to-date software, it should be able to spot and block these malicious techniques. But it’s still worth being cautious when scanning QR codes in public places, especially when you’re not sure who’s behind them.

While it’s unlikely that fraudsters will have replaced all the QR codes on the menus at your local restaurant, a code randomly stuck to a wall in a public space is more likely to be risky. Exercise common sense and caution and you shouldn’t run into any security or safety problems.

In terms of privacy, QR codes can’t actually store data—they just display it. How much information about yourself you’re giving away depends on the app you’re using to scan. If it asks you to sign in before or after reading a code, the app could be storing that data as a sort of browsing history. As always, check app privacy policies if you’re unsure.

How to use QR codes

Using QR codes is easy: just point your phone’s camera at the graphic, and your device processes the data the moment it recognizes it.

Some apps use this technology as a means for authentication, where all you need to do is follow instructions. One example of this is WhatsApp, which asks you to scan a QR code on their web client to load up your account with all your contacts and conversations in a browser.

If you’ve come across a QR code in the wild, you can use your phone’s camera app. On Android, open the Camera app and get the QR code in focus within the frame. Once your device recognizes the pattern, you’ll see a link appear on screen. Tap the link to open it.

The process is very similar on iOS. Launch the Camera app, point your phone’s camera at a QR code, and when you’ve got the framing and the focus right, you’ll see a notification asking you if you want to open the link embedded in the code.

[Related: Here’s how New York’s ‘vaccine passport’ app works.]

Most of the time, your phone’s built-in camera app will do just fine, but there are plenty of QR code reader apps available, too. They offer extras such as the ability to keep a log of all the codes you’ve scanned, and to process many more types of barcode.

If you want to be ultra-cautious, you can install a reader app from a trusted security company. One example is the free Kaspersky QR Scanner app for Android and iOS. When it scans QR codes, the platform puts up a warning if you’re about to visit a URL that’s known to be harboring malware or associated with phishing attempts.

Another option is the Trend Micro QR Scanner for Android, or the QR scanner built into Trend Micro Mobile Security for iOS. Again, the platform will flag potentially problematic links in the QR code so you can stay away from harmful sites. Android and iOS have their own similar security features built in, but a third-party app gives you an extra level of protection if you feel like you need it.
