Suggested January 2024 Fortnite Winterfest Returns With Tom Holland’S Spider
Fortnite Winterfest returns with Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and a ton of holiday cosmetics
With the holidays quickly approaching, a large number of free-to-play and live service titles are rolling out their winter events. Fortnite is the latest game to do so, announcing the return of Fortnite Winterfest today. Winterfest gives players a chance to unlock special winter and holiday-themed cosmetics, while the Fortnite shop will also be hosting new outfits to tie in with Spider-Man: No Way Home.
If you’ve been around to experience Fortnite Winterfests of the past, you’re probably already familiar with how things will work this year. Sgt. Winter is making a return, and this time he has presents in tow. Players can visit the Winterfest Lodge through the new snowflake tab in the Lobby and receive one new gift per day by visiting.
Sgt. Winter has 14 days’ worth of presents to give out, including the Krisabelle and Polar Peely outfits. According to Epic, the Krisabelle skin will only be available after unwrapping the six presents blocking her view, while the Polar Peely skin will unlock after the ice encasing his present melts.
Epic says that players can also return to the Lodge to unlock any daily gifts they missed, so you don’t necessarily need to log in for 14 days straight to unlock everything. Just be sure you return to the Lodge before the Winterfest event wraps up on January 6th at 9 AM ET.
There will also be a series of Winterfest quests to complete as you play. All of the quests will be available for the entire duration of the event, and completing six will unlock the Snowmando Board Glider (with two alternate styles), while completing 10 will unlock the Ffrosty Back Bling. (And yes, it’s spelled Ffrosty with an extra F.)
Some items from previous winter events are returning for Winterfest 2023 as well. Those returning items include the Chiller Grenades, Snowball Launchers, Holiday Presents, and Sneaky Snowman. The Chiller Grenades can be used to encase enemies’ feet in ice, while the Holiday Presents will grant loot when opened.
There are also some community-made maps to checkout during Fortnite’s Winterfest. You can find those custom maps in the Winterfest tab, and playing those maps and modes for a cumulative two hours will unlock a number of holiday-themed cosmetics, including the Ol’ Cracky Emoticon, Llamistletoe Spray, and a pair of banners. Players can also unlock a third holiday skin, Blizzabelle, simply by logging in while the event is live.
Finally, we’ll be seeing outfits based on Tom Holland’s Spider-Man and Zendaya’s MJ from Spider-Man: No Way Home land in the shop over the course of the event. While you can earn a Spider-Man outfit through the battle pass this season, it seems these new skins will require an upfront payment of cold hard cash before you can don them in-game.
So, there you have it: Winterfest is back with plenty of outfits and other cosmetics to unlock. The event kicks off today and will run until the morning of January 6th, giving players three weeks to earn everything on offer. Be sure to keep an eye out for Sgt. Winter during your games too, as he’ll be passing out presents to those he encounters.

It’s hard not to feel like Destiny 2’s Forsaken expansion ($40 on chúng tôi is Bungie’s last chance. The game’s endured a rough year, with complaints starting a month or two after Destiny 2’s release and never really dying down, compounded by two mediocre-to-bad DLCs—December’s Curse of Osiris and May’s Warmind.Uncharted waters
First, let me say: I do mean scratching the surface. Both Curse of Osiris and Warmind I finished in mere hours. With Forsaken, I’d estimate I’m slightly more than halfway through the campaign after dedicating the better part of Tuesday to it. There’s a bit of padding built into the structure, but I’d guess it takes 10 to 15 hours depending on how efficient you are.
IDG / Hayden Dingman
And that’s just the campaign. There’s also the new hybrid competitive/co-op multiplayer mode Gambit, a new free-roam area in the Tangled Shore, and a new raid that won’t be added until September 14.
It’s a sizable add-on, and I plan to return with more formal impressions after I’ve spent some time with it. I think that’s important, waiting to see if the glow will dissipate after a few weeks of grind.
For the moment I’m impressed though.
Destiny 2’s struggled with its writing since the beginning. Bungie’s world-building is second to none. Go check out a wiki and you’ll find enormous lore dumps, enough to fill entire sci-fi novels. And the art hints at this too, each planet crafted with an attention to detail that hints at hidden depths.
IDG / Hayden Dingman
Forsaken is legitimately compelling though, at least so far. It starts with a literal bang, a hook strong enough Bungie used it in all its marketing: Fan-favorite character Cayde-6 is killed. Like, really killed. His Ghost, which normally would protect a Guardian from such a fate, is destroyed and Cayde-6 shot through the heart by Uldren Sov, Prince of the Reef.
IDG / Hayden Dingman
Your opponents are even better though. Prince Uldren presides over “The Barons,” eight boss enemies you have to track down and eliminate one at a time. Each is referred to by a nickname, i.e. The Rider or The Machinist or The Mindbender.
Forsaken still rushes through its pantheon a bit too quickly, and I would love for these characters to have more time to monologue. The Barons are very distinctive though, with each sporting a unique design and accompanying gimmick.
It’s not very sophisticated maybe. When I was taking screenwriting classes this would’ve fallen under “giving each character an eyepatch and a scar,” a slightly derogatory way of saying the character traits are so over-the-top as to feel contrived. It works though, especially in a pulp universe like Destiny’s.
IDG / Hayden Dingman
Anyway, I’ve lots more to see—multiple Barons still stand between me and Uldren, and then I imagine there are a couple missions to wrap up Forsaken and Cayde-6’s story. At the moment it feels like a major step up though.Grab bag
Mechanically I’m impressed too, and that’s probably the more important part if Forsaken’s going to have staying power.
I’m honestly not sure what’s been added in Forsaken and what came over the summer—I haven’t played since probably two days after the release of Warmind. There have been a lot of changes though.
IDG / Hayden Dingman
I’m also really enjoying my new Titan subclass. Each character class has a new subclass, accessible by finishing a mission early in the campaign. The Titan Striker’s is called “Code of the Missile” and you literally fly through the air like an electric Superman, then slam into the ground with an enormous blast of energy. It’s exactly the sort of godlike powers I want my Guardian to display.
IDG / Hayden Dingman
And the list of stuff to do each week seems really long now. I’m most interested in The Spider’s new “Wanted” posters, which put bounties on the boss enemies at the end of Lost Sectors, and reward Legendary gear for completion. It’s a fun way to make Lost Sectors slightly more compelling.
Then there’s the return of features from the original Destiny, for true completionists. Collections are great for gear-chasers, showing you which guns, armor, emblems, and so on you’ve already attained, and also what you haven’t. Triumphs are that, but for events—basically an in-game achievement system, tracking everything from the campaign missions you’ve completed to the number of Lost Sectors you’ve found on each planet. There’s also a Lore tab that fills up with info about the Tangled Shore, Prince Uldren, and so on. It’s an interesting read. Random weapon rolls are back.
IDG / Hayden Dingman
And the new Gambit mode is a blast.
My only complaint so far is the reduced utility of infusing gear, or using higher-level trash gear to boost up your preferred items. This used to be essentially a free process, but now it costs both Planetary Materials (the per-planet trash items like datalattice) and Masterwork Cores. I’m all for a bit more grind in Destiny 2, but it seems pretty punishing at the moment—not to mention boring as hell. Farming those planetary materials is tedious.Bottom line
It seems like a solid pivot though. The campaign’s not going to win any awards, but Destiny 2 finally feels consequential. There are real stakes wrapped around a real emotional core in Forsaken, and it’s refreshing to feel invested in whatever I’m shooting. And on a broader level, it feels like Bungie’s finally catered to the core devotees willing to spend hundreds of hours on the weekly grind. That might not be as appealing to Bungie from a sales perspective, but it does seem more in line with the type of game Destiny 2 so desperately wants to be.
Fool me as many times as Destiny 2 though, and let’s just say I’m skeptical even after an entire day with Forsaken. Let’s give it a week or two, finish the raid, and then we’ll see where we are.

Fortnite Season 5 is here and it’s big
As expected, Fortnite went down for maintenance in the early-morning hours today, and when the game came back up, season 5 was live. In a word, Fortnite season 5 appears to be massive. The patch notes show that a lot has been changed, even if they don’t make all of the changes entirely clear. Let’s dive in and see all that’s new.
Upon logging into Fortnite today, you’ll probably notice that the map has undergone some big changes. There’s now a new desert biome in the lower right corner of the map, and it surrounds a new location called Paradise Palms, which takes the place of Moisty Mire. Similarly, Anarchy Acres has been replaced by a new location called Lazy Links, and Epic says that a “few unnamed POIs (points of interest) have appeared across the map.”
In addition to the changes to the map, there’s also been a new vehicle that’s been added to the game: the All Terrain Kart. The All Terrain Kart has enough space to fit your entire squad, and you can drift with it to gain a speed boost. You can also leap over obstacles with the All Terrain Kart, but doing so is truly a team affair, as players seated in the rear will have to lean back by holding S and releasing at the right time in order to gain air. Beyond all of that, the roof of the All Terrain Kart serves as bounce pad, so this vehicle does a bit of everything.
Rifts have also been added to Fortnite’s world. You’ll find these dotted around the map, but the patch notes are pretty vague about what they do. It sounds like you’ll need to track these down in-game and interact with them to figure out what they do.
Of course, with the start of season 5 comes a new Battle Pass, which will offer up a bunch of new skins and cosmetics that fit within the “Worlds Collide” theme. You can see of these new skins in the trailer below, but to see everything that’s on offer, you’ll have to boot up the game and thumb through the different tiers of the battle pass yourself.
On top of these new additions, there are also a number of changes coming along with season 5. The Nintendo Switch version, for instance, now offers support for gyro controls, which has been an requested feature ever since Fortnite first came to the eShop. Epic has also split weekly challenges into two tiers: free and Battle Pass. The first three challenges each week will be available for free, while the remaining four will only be accessible to Battle Pass owners.
Finally, beginning in season 5, Epic says that progressive challenges will “no longer be restricted to a single season.” This, Epic says, will allow players to complete challenges at their own pace, and it should do something to help alleviate the season-end grind. There’s more to today’s patch than just what’s listed here, so be sure to head over to the official Fortnite site to check out today’s patch notes in full.
