Suggested January 2024 Feature Request: Apple, Please Bring Siri To The Mac
Siri percolated throughout all of Apple’s platforms in 2023. It started with iPhone in 2011, iPad in 2012, debuted on Apple Watch in early 2023 and Apple TV with the new model a few months ago. It’s quickly becoming a premier feature on these platforms, with live-as-you-speak transcription and radically new features like ‘Remind me about this’ contextual tasks when inside apps. Except for one platform of course. Mac OS X has been ignored and left abandoned with regards to true voice searching and Siri. It’s 2023, and I want Apple to bring Siri to the Mac.
Especially with Apple Watch, it’s just become natural for me to ask for stuff with my voice. For little things like timers or messages, I like to speak. Siri voice recognition has got significantly better for me in the last year, I have come to rely on it. And not having it available when I’m working on my Mac is a huge pain.
There is the potential for Apple to make Siri on Mac even more powerful than a straight iOS port too. You could create more complicated actions for Siri to execute, in a world with multiple apps. ‘Open chúng tôi and a text editor side by side’ would be a cool command to quickly set up a workspace desktop, for example. Opportunities to integrate with the Mac features of Spotlight also exist, such as finding files using natural language queries as introduced with OS X El Capitan.
In terms of user interface, it seems like a simple problem. Just like the iPad, present a full screen overlay with the Siri conversation in the middle of the screen. 9to5Mac reported Apple was developing Siri for Mac in this manner for early internal versions of OS X Mavericks, but obviously it didn’t get released. On iOS, Siri is activated with a long press of the Home Button. The Mac doesn’t have an obvious primary button, but it could implement an activation by a long-press of the fn key or similar. Apple could even expose an app wrapper for it, so avid users could drag a Siri icon into their dock.
When thinking about why Apple hasn’t done something, it’s worth considering their motivations for intentionally not doing so. It is possible that talking to your computer is a weird concept to grasp. It’s true that talking to a phone is a lot more natural as the microphone is close to your face. Even on Watch, it’s easier with a quick raise of the arm.
Initially, you could argue that Siri was a hallmark feature of the iPhone and that Apple wanted to keep it exclusive to encourage people to buy iPhones. This line of thinking would be somewhat reasonable in late 2011 but now its pervasive everywhere on the iOS side. It doesn’t feel exclusive anymore. In fact it feels like a necessity, a voice assistant is practically a core feature of modern operating systems these days. And OS X is worse by not having it.
At least from my perspective, the reason Siri on the Mac hasn’t happened is because Apple hasn’t gotten around to finishing it for a public release. There have been other priorities for engineering resources to tackle. Siri is one of the few big features (Control Center is another, but even that is more recent) that the Mac still misses out in comparison to its iOS/tvOS/watchOS siblings. Perhaps 2023 is the year Apple will find the development resources to bring Siri to OS X, as the platform seems to have reached a level of system stability and feature maturity.

System errors such as ERROR_OPLOCK_NOT_GRANTED can occur on almost any PC. This error usually comes with The oplock request is denied error message so it’s easy to recognize. Fortunately, this isn’t a serious problem, and today we’re going to show you how to fix it on Windows 10.
How to fix ‘The oplock request is denied’ error Fix – ERROR_OPLOCK_NOT_GRANTEDSolution 1 – Restart your PC
In most cases this is just a temporary error and you can fix it with a simple restart. Keep in mind that restart might not be a long-term solution, but it should at least temporarily fix the problem.
Solution 2 – Delete the problematic file
Several users reported that chúng tôi is causing this error to appear. To fix the problem, you might want to try removing the problematic file. Sometimes this file can become corrupted and that can cause this error to occur. After removing the problematic file, Windows will recreate it and the error should be resolved completely.
Solution 3 – Change web.config file
Users reported this problem with WSUS, but you should be able to fix it with this simple solution. According to users, you can fix this problem simply by changing a single value in web.config file. This is a configuration file for WSUS, and by making changes to it you can configure how WSUS works. To edit this file, you need to do the following:
Go to WSUS installation directory. By default it should be C:Program FilesUpdate ServicesWebServicesclientwebservice.
Locate web.config file and open it with a text editor such as Notepad.
Save changes and close your text editor.
After making the changes, check if the problem is resolved. Several users reported that setting the value to 26000 fixed the problem for them, but you might want to experiment with different values.
Solution 4 – Perform the cleanup of WSUS server
If you’re using WSUS, you might be able to fix this problem by performing the cleanup of the WSUS server. In addition, try to delete datastore.edb file from client PCs. After doing that, the issue should be fixed entirely.
Solution 5 – Install the latest updates
Windows 10 is a solid operating system, but it’s not completely bug-free. Certain bugs and glitches can appear once in a while, and in most cases you should be able to fix them simply by keeping Windows 10 up to date. To make the update process even simpler, Windows 10 tends to install upgrades automatically.
However, certain issues can occur and sometimes you might miss an important update. To fix the problem, you need to check for updates manually. This is relatively simple and you can do it by following these steps:
Press Windows Key + I to open the Settings app.
Solution 6 – Check your antivirus
Another common cause for this problem can be your antivirus. Antivirus software is necessary if you want to protect your PC, but sometimes it can interfere with your operating system. Many antivirus tools use different security policies that can prevent you from installing or running certain apps. To fix the problem, you need to find the problematic feature and disable it manually. This might not be a simple task because each antivirus tool is different, so you might have some issues finding and disabling the problematic feature.
If this method is too complicated for you, you can check if your antivirus is the problem by disabling it. Keep in mind that Windows 10 comes with Windows Defender, so your PC won’t be defenseless even if you disable your antivirus.
Expert tip:
After removing your antivirus, check if the problem still persists. If not, it’s certain that your antivirus is the problem so you might want to switch to a different antivirus software. If you want to keep your antivirus, be sure to update it to the latest version and check if that solves the problem.
Solution 7 – Perform a Clean boot
Often these types of problems can be caused by third-party applications, therefore it’s important to find and remove them. Many applications tend to start automatically with Windows, and in order to fix this problem you need to disable all startup apps and services. This is relatively simple and you can do it by following these steps:
After your PC restarts, check if the issue still appears. If not, it’s most likely that one of your startup applications or services was causing this issue. To find the problematic app, you need to repeat these steps and enable applications and services one by one or in groups. Keep in mind that you need to restart your PC after enabling a set of applications. Once you find the problematic app, you can keep it disabled, uninstall it or update it to the latest version and check if that solves the issue.
Solution 8 – Create a new user account
Open the Settings app and navigate to Accounts section.
After you create a new user account, switch to it and check if the problem still appears. If not, you’ll need to move your personal files to the new account and use it as your main one.
Solution 9 – Use System Restore
If this problem started appearing recently, you might be able to fix it by restoring your PC. Windows comes with a useful feature called System Restore that allows you to easily restore your PC to an earlier state. The feature is rather useful and it will undo all changes made in a specific time period. Keep in mind that this feature can remove your recently saved files, so be sure to back them up before performing System Restore. To use this feature, do the following:
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the restoration process.
After restoring your PC check if the error message still appears.
Solution 10 – Reset Windows 10
If you’re asked to insert installation media, be sure to do so.
Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the reset.
Once the reset is complete, you’ll have a fresh installation of Windows 10. Of course, you’ll have to install all your applications again and move your personal files from the backup. Keep in mind that this is a drastic solution, so use it only if other solutions can’t fix the problem.
ERROR_OPLOCK_NOT_GRANTED and The oplock request is denied errors can cause some problems on your PC, but we hope that you managed to fix them by using one of our solutions.

What The New Congress Could Bring
What the New Congress Could Bring BU profs see ethics reform, fiscal revamping, and a weaning from foreign oil
A new Congress gets down to business today. For the Democrats, who take control of both the House and Senate, it’s a day 12 years in the making. For the people who voted them into power on November 7, it’s a day of big expectations.
For some thoughts on what the next two years could — and should — bring from Washington, we asked BU experts about five major national issues: Iraq, Congressional ethics, fiscal policy, health care, and the environment. To these thinkers, we posed a single question: what can we expect from the 110th Congress?
When it comes to ideas about Iraq, the Democratic-controlled 110th Congress won’t do any better than the Republican-controlled 109th Congress did.
Iraq is a train wreck. There’s no putting the train back on track.
What distinguishes the new Congress is that it has the report of the Iraq Study Group. Although derided by the Bush administration and its dwindling band of supporters, the findings of the ISG are likely to appeal to members of Congress for at least one reason: the report is the product of a bipartisan effort. Given the way that Washington works, it reeks of respectability.
Therefore, I expect that both Democrats in the new Congress and those Republicans who wish to distance themselves from the war will embrace the ISG report. They will do so less because the ISG offers “a way forward” than because it offers political cover.
In the meantime, the tragedy in Iraq will continue to unfold, unaffected by what politicians in Washington say or do.

We can certainly expect ethics reform from the new Congress. When an issue helps to knock a Congressional majority from power — as was the case in 2006 — legislators react. Democrats don’t want to face voters in 2008 with nothing to show them in terms of reform. Democrats, and many Republicans, will push for tighter rules on issues such as the permissible interaction between legislators and lobbyists as well as the limitations on former staffers dealing with incumbents.
But a big question remains: will Congress take the crucial step of creating an independent commission to monitor ethics rules? Unless this step is taken, the nation will not see substantial progress on improving Congressional ethics.

In a nutshell, we need to eliminate all current federal taxes other than excise taxes and switch to a national sales tax with a rebate to make it progressive. We need to totally revamp Social Security so that it uses individual accounts but also collective investment in the market in a single global market-weighted index fund. And in health care, we need to go to an individual voucher system that would give everyone enough money to buy a health insurance policy that would cover basic needs, where the size of the voucher would depend on the recipient’s preexisting health conditions.
We can expect the new Congress to try to win lower prescription drug prices under the Medicare program by amending the current law. That law prohibits Medicare from negotiating prices with drugmakers. Unfortunately, it will be hard, in practice, for such an amendment to survive a presidential veto.
Even if it could survive, the existing Medicare drug program is so fragmented among the dozens of insurance companies that administer it today that it would be difficult for Medicare to assemble much buying power. It’s hard to put Humpty Dumpty together again.
Current U.S. health-care spending of $2.2 trillion — about four times defense spending — is already enough to finance the care that works for all Americans. Still, 47 million Americans have no health insurance, and most of the rest of us are underinsured.
How much is wasted? Roughly one-half of existing spending is wasted — on unnecessary care stemming mainly from financial incentives to overserve, defensive medicine, and lack of evidence about what works; on administration stemming from mistrust and complexity; on excess prices; and on theft.
How to squeeze out the waste? Start by recognizing that doctors’ decisions control almost 90 percent of personal health spending. Squeezing out waste will require doctors’ active participation. It would be useful to negotiate a peace treaty with doctors, one that eliminated the threat that doctors could be sued and also eliminated their payment-related paperwork.
In exchange, doctors would take on the job of serving all of us well with the huge sums already available. But Congress isn’t there yet. Today’s wasted spending helps to finance business as usual, and most of the politically powerful interest groups are accustomed to more money for business as usual.

National security, the war on terrorism, and economic competitiveness will be used to justify the Democrats’ shift on U.S. energy and environmental policy. Democrats will argue that money spent on imported oil is used to support governments that oppose U.S. interests and support terrorists. To wean the United States from imported oil, Congress is likely to reallocate incentives and subsidies from the production of crude oil, which were included in Republican energy legislation, to alternative fuels, such as wind and solar. Legislation will be designed to commercialize alternative fuels and nurture markets. On the demand side, Democrats are likely to mandate increases in the energy efficiency of the U.S. automobile fleet, especially light trucks, minivans, and sport utility vehicles. Their average fuel efficiency in 2005 was lower than the average in 1991.
Changes in energy policy also will be driven by concerns about climate change, which is the most prominent environmental issue that Democrats are likely to tackle. Congress is likely to build on state efforts to regulate carbon dioxide emissions, which stem largely from burning coal, oil, and natural gas. States on the East and West Coasts have passed legislation that increases the efficiency of energy-using equipment and fosters emission-trading programs. Democrats will argue that in addition to slowing climate change, these types of environmental legislation will help U.S. firms compete in global markets, including financial markets — the European Union has established a market to trade carbon emissions. The nature of Democratic efforts will depend in part on an anticipated 2007 Supreme Court ruling — Massachusetts and several other states pressed the court to force the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to recognize carbon dioxide as a pollutant and regulate its emissions.

Ipad To Apple Tv, Mac Or Windows Pc
Airplay Mirroring is a fantastic feature of iOS present on the iPhone and iPad. It lets you mirror your iOS screen’s device, and basically everything that you do on it, to an Apple TV or a Mac computer. This turns out to be a incredibly useful feature while doing presentations and demos, creating screencasts or videos, or if you just want to showcase your iPad/iPhone photos on a bigger screen.
And the best past: Airplay Mirroring is incredibly easy to use as long as you have the right setup and software. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s needed and how to use Airplay Mirroring on the iPhone and iPad.
Requirements1. An iPhone 4S/ iPad 2 or newer, running iOS 5 or any later version of iOS.
2. If you want to mirror to Apple TV: a 2nd gen or 3rd gen Apple TV running software version 5 or later.
3.If you want to mirror to a Mac: OS X Mountain Lion (or later) , a supported Mac, and an app to support mirroring. The list of supported Macs is:
iMac (Mid 2011 or newer)
Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer)
Two main apps that allow you to mirror your iPhone/iPad screen to a Mac are Reflector and Air Server . Both of these apps offer free trials, are available for $14.99 for a single user license, and have other licensing packages for multiple users. Both these apps also work on Windows PCs. I tried Reflector for iOS 6 and Air Server for iOS 7, and both seem to be really good.
4. A WiFi network. All devices taking part in the AirPlay Mirroring must be on the same local WiFi network.
Installing Your AppInstalling these apps is very easy. Once you purchase (or try) these apps, a file will automatically download onto your PC/Mac. On Macs, the installation is very easy. All you have to do is drag the app into your Mac’s Applications folder, and you’re done. Once you open the app, it will ask you whether you want to try or buy the app. If you choose to try the app, Reflector has a limitation. It will automatically shut down after 10 minutes and will then need to be restarted. Also, after I had used Reflector 2 times, the app started telling me that my trial had expired. Try Air Server, that’s better.
On Windows, installing Reflector is nearly identical, with the only difference being you will need to allow Firewall access for the app.
How To Turn On AirPlay Mirroring On iOS 5 & 61. Open up the Multitasking Bar on your iOS device. This can be done by double-tapping the Home button. If you are on a iPad, you can open the multitasking bar by using a swipe up gesture from the bottom bezel, provided you have enabled multitasking gestures in Settings.
2. Now that you can see the multitasking bar, swipe on the recently used apps list from the left to the right. This will need to be done once on an iPad and twice on a iPhone. Swipe until you see the Airplay Mirroring icon.
3. Tap on the Airplay Mirroring icon. This will bring up a popover dialog showing you various devices that are available to mirror to on your WiFi network. Note that you will need to have Reflector or Air Server open on your PC/Mac for the it to be available to mirror to.
4. Tap to select either the Apple TV or the Mac and tap to toggle the Mirroring button below the device name to On.
How To Turn Airplay Mirroring On in iOS 71. Open up the Control Centre on your iOS 7 device. This can be done by swiping up from the bottom of the screen on the iPhone as well as the iPad.
3. Select the device you would like to mirror your iOS device’s screen to.
That’s it. This really is a superb feature that’s so easy to use.

How To Use The Pixel’s Adaptive Charging Feature
Google’s Pixel phones are well-known for providing a unique software experience with timely updates. Speaking of which, Google has recently extended the availability of some features that were introduced with the Pixel 5 to some of its older devices. One of the most useful in the bunch is Adaptive Charging. This article looks at how you can set up and use Adaptive Charging on your Pixel phone.
What Is Adaptive Charging?Google’s Adaptive Charging is a feature intended to preserve battery health by controlling the speed at which your device charges. This is supposed to keep your battery health optimal and thus extend its overall life cycle.
Apple offers a similar option on iOS. It’s called “Optimized Battery Charging” and aims to reduce chemical aging by reducing the amount of time an iPhone’s battery spends fully charged. Google’s Adaptive Charging alternative works following a similar principle.
The idea is to let the phone steadily charge over a period of several hours, instead of topping it off as quickly as possible. The reason behind this is that the practice tends to degrade the battery more quickly. Basically, Adaptive Charging works to minimize the amount of time the battery spends in the 80 to 100 percent range to prevent premature aging.
Pixels with Adaptive Charging working properly will slow down the charging process overnight and quickly finish charging before the user wakes up.
How to Take Advantage of Adaptive Charging on Your PixelWhile the feature is already turned on by default on your Pixel, it won’t function as as it should unless you set an alarm. We’ll explain more in a second, but here’s how to find the feature on your phone and check that it’s indeed enabled:
1. Open Settings on your Pixel device.
2. Go to Battery.
3. Tap on Adaptive Battery.
4. Here you should see two options: Adaptive Battery and Adaptive Charging. Check to see whether they are enabled. If they are not, toggle them on.
Adaptive Battery is another tool that helps extend your battery’s life by making predictions about which apps you are most likely to use in the next few hours. It then works to reduce power to the ones you don’t use that much.
Going back to Adaptive Charging, it’s not enough to have the feature enabled on your phone. You’ll need to do one more thing: set an alarm.
Here’s the gist. The feature only becomes operational if you set an alarm to go off anytime “between 5 and 10AM.” Also, you’ll need to plug the phone in for the night anytime after 9PM. Once this is done, Adaptive Charging will use your alarm’s settings for guidance to complete the charging process just before you wake up.
Unfortunately, if your schedule does not align to these parameters, your phone will charge at normal speed, no extra tweaks involved. In contrast, Apple’s alternative learns from users’ charging habits, so it can adapt to a person’s unique schedule. Hopefully, Google is open to improving Adaptive Charging in the future so that it can offer a more comprehensive approach.
What Other Adaptive Features Can You Use on Your Pixel? On the Pixel 4a 5G+ and Pixel 5, Adaptive Connectivity will automatically switch between 5G andr 4G, depending on the app in use. For texting on WhatsApp, it will give you 4G, but for downloading a song, it will make the switch to 5G.
Moreover, Google recently pushed Adaptive Sound on the Pixel 4a 5G (also available on the Pixel 5). This feature uses the phone’s microphone to assess the sounds near you and then adjusts the equalizer. This results in optimization of volume based on the noise level in the environment you currently find yourself in.
There are a couple other Adaptive options on your Pixel including Adaptive Brightness and Adaptive Notifications. But both are baked into Android, so they should be accessible from most newer smartphones.

How To Stream The 2023 World Series On Iphone, Ipad, Mac, And Apple Tv
The MLB World Series officially begins tonight, with the Boston Red Sox set to take on the Los Angeles Dodgers. Game 1 is taking place at Fenway Park in Boston, but luckily you’ll be able to tune in from anywhere. Read on for details on how to stream the World Series from your iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV.
Game 1 is set to start at 8PM ET/5PM PT, with Fox handling the broadcast this year. As usual with Fox, they make it rather difficult to stream without some sort of cable solution – but here are some ideas.
Stream the World Series on iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple TVThe easiest way to stream the World Series is through the Fox Sports Go application, which is available for iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV. Unfortunately to do this you’ll need a valid cable log-in, but it doesn’t necessarily have to be yours and could instead be that of a friend or family member.
Download the Fox Sports Go app from the App Store for free.
If you’re looking to stream the World Series from your Mac, you can do so via the Fox Sports website, but again you’ll need a cable login to do so.
If, however, you don’t have easy access to a cable provider login, you’re not completely out of luck. Many of the streaming TV platforms, including DirecTV Now, Sling, and others, offer free trials that give you access to the World Series.
Sling TV, for instance, is touting itself as the “best way to catch all the Fall Classic action.” You’ll need the company’s Sling Blue package, which offers a 7-day free trial and access to FOX. Sign up for a Sling TV’s free 7-day trial here. Just remember to cancel if you don’t wish to be charged. The plan will renew at $25 per month after the trial.
DirecTV Now, YouTube TV, PlayStation Vue, FuboTV, and Hulu with Live TV will also allow you to stream the World Series, and offer trial periods. Here are those details:
In addition to allowing you to stream the World Series via their dedicated applications, these services can also serve as cable provider logins if you’d prefer to stream via the Fox Sports Go app.
World Series 2023 scheduleWondering if a 7-day trial will let you stream the World Series in its entirety? Well, as long as it’s not a full seven game series, you should be good to go. Here’s the full schedule:
