Suggested January 2024 Eclipse 4 Released, Brings System

It seems as thought night/dark mode jailbreak tweaks are really hot these days, and the popular Eclipse night mode jailbreak tweak by developer Guillermo Moran has officially been re-released this week with full support for iOS 10, officially raising the bar for all the hype.

The new version of Eclipse, named Eclipse 4 because it’s the fourth iteration of the tweak since its initial inception back in 2014, is a free download for anyone who owns any of the previous versions from any other jailbreak they may have had in the past.

A freebie tweak was released just last week called DarkMessages brought night mode-like functionality specifically to the Messages app, and while it was neat to try, it really made your mouth water for the night mode-like look and feel in every app.

What’s nice about Eclipse 4 is how it’s a system-wide solution for your iPhone or iPad, which is optimal for any jailbreaker who doesn’t want to install a different tweak for every app on their device.

Additionally, Eclipse can be used for theming, as you can use it to color your iOS interface in any way that you want to, whether you want iOS to look as dark as possible for night use, or you want to deck it out with your favorite color schemes for the heck of it.

Configuring Eclipse 4

Eclipse 4 adds a preferences pane to the Settings app where you can configure all of its extensive settings to your personal liking:

From the main preferences pane, you can do any of the following:

Toggle the tweak on or off

Toggle the tweak in SpringBoard

Toggle Alternative Mode

Hide or show table separators

Play around with your custom color options

Play around with additional customization options

Choose the applications that the tweak works in

Override black colors with a selected text color in apps that won’t play well with Eclipse

When you go into the settings related to coloring your device’s system-wide UI, you can go crazy with color customizations. Although the most common choice will be to leave things stock and have a dark night mode-like UI for your iPhone, you might opt for a more unique color scheme. Some of the things you can customize here include:

Whether or not the Cell Detail text gets colorized

The color you want the Navigation Bar to be

The dominant theme color you want your UI to be

The color you want to tint your buttons and switches

The color you want your Status Bar text to be

In the screenshots below, you can see some examples of just what changing these settings can yield:

You can also go into the More Options preferences pane to find more miscellaneous options. Among those are the following:

Colorizing your iOS keyboard

Choosing a color for your iOS keyboard

Colorizing loading/splash screens

Choosing a color for your loading/splash screens

Toggling translucent Navigation Bars

Toggling tinted SMS bubbles

Toggling tinted iMessage bubbles

Colorizing the Status Bar

Choosing a color for your application Dock

There are also two more options here that are still experimental and are coming soon in a future update, including:

But since those aren’t available yet… more on that later.

Other stuff you should know

Eclipse 4 is probably one of my top favorite jailbreak tweaks of all time. It has withstood the test of time and comes with incredible support and rapid updates with every iteration of iOS and each new jailbreak. It’s also one of my favorite reasons to have a jailbreak today, despite Apple’s addition of the f.lux-like Night Shift mode.

While the tweak won’t play nicely with all third-party apps, simply because some app developers don’t follow strict app design guidelines, it does work with most of them. For apps where Eclipse does not work well, you can easily blacklist them from the tweak’s integrated application list and they will remain unaffected by Eclipse. The rest of your apps, however, will continue to be affected by the tweak.

You should also know that Eclipse doesn’t include scheduling options, but it does include an Activator and Flipswitch toggle, which means you can easily toggle it on or off system-wide with a single gesture whenever you’re ready to start using it, such as around 6 PM and later when the Sun begins to set.

Finally, I should mention that you can combine the effects of Eclipse 4 with that of Noctis for iOS 10 and achieve a more complete darkened iPhone or iPad UI that includes various other elements of iOS, including:

Control Center

Volume HUD

Application Dock

Application folders

And more…

If you are interested in grabbing Eclipse 4, you can do so from Cydia’s BigBoss repository right now for $0.99. Don’t forget that if you already own any previous version of Eclipse, then this version is a free upgrade, compliments of the gracious developer.

Note: Eclipse 4 is designed especially for iOS 10. If you want Eclipse for iOS 9, then you should install Eclipse 3 instead.

Pardee Center Brings Religion Scholars Together

Pardee Center brings religion scholars together Experts find God may still be dead, but religion is more alive than ever

Ray Hart, Dean of the School of Theology, says religion is alive and well.

Religious scholars from universities and institutes across the country traveled last week to Boston University to attend the Frederick S. Pardee Center for the Study of the Longer-Range Future conference The Role of Religion in the Longer-Range Future. The two-day event, cosponsored by the School of Theology and the College of Arts and Sciences department of religion, addressed such questions as “What can religion offer the modern world?” and “Where is religion going?” BU Today talked with Ray Hart, STH dean and a professor of philosophical and systematic theology. Hart led a discussion asking, “Must we choose between science and religion?”

BU Today: Must we choose between science and religion?

Hart: I would say the answer given by the panelists was generally, “No, we need not choose, and if we understand what science does and what religion does, there isn’t any need to choose between them.”

What does each of them do?

They each talk about different things. The primary matter where religion and science get confused is on causation. The creationists use the language of creation and confuse so-called creationism with science. The defenders of creationism define God as the cause of the world. The major religions do not treat God as a cause in any ordinary sense. God is not an item in the cosmic inventory, like a star or a virtue or a rock. God establishes the conditions whereby there is something rather than nothing. Under these conditions there can be a causal system.

Can society afford to teach that creationism and evolution are equally valid?

I think the general consensus is it cannot afford to teach creationism as science, and that’s why the whole question of intelligent design is brooded about. If you get into that, there is as much evidence of unintelligent design as there is of intelligent design. Nature is red in tooth and claw and notoriously inefficient. Think of how many species have been destroyed in natural processes for another to emerge, only to be destroyed itself. I think the general consensus is that creationism as it is propounded and intelligent design are probably not good science and probably should not be taught as such.

Is that a modern problem?

It has occurred since the 17th century, and there were many issues on the table long before that. What we now call science was called natural philosophy and the scientific method had not developed. But neither had history in the modern sense.

Isn’t the modern sense the crux of the debate?

The kinds of issues under debate are a function of modernity. Those religions that are resisting the sciences are also resisting modernity. There is also the thesis that modernity is itself a creation largely of Protestantism. There are really two problems here: one is those religions contending against modernity and the other is the views of science that do not know enough about the history of science or religion. There are problems on both sides, which is why people have to get together and talk these things out.

What technologies available to us now will influence the way we look at religion in the future?

The other big influence is immigration. Islam is not just in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. You have people in your neighborhood who are Muslims, Buddhist, and no telling what. Our kids intermarry. Technology, immigration, intercultural mix, rapid transit — all of these factors are very powerful influences on the future of religion.

Then where is Christanity growing?

It is growing everywhere but in the United States and Europe. It is growing in Africa, China, Japan, and Korea. The centers of many religions are shifting out of their major habitats. Christianity is no longer a European and American phenomenon. The same is true of Islam. It is growing proportionally faster in Europe and America because of immigration. There are more Muslims in Chicago than there are Episcopalians.

So religion, at least some religion, is going to be around for a while?

People have predicted the demise of religion for 400 years. It doesn’t go away; it seems to get stronger. God may be dead, but the religion is very much alive.

Ios 15 Rc Released For Beta Testers

Apple has released iOS 15 RC and iPadOS 15 RC to users enrolled in the beta testing programs for the iPhone and iPad system software.

RC stands for Release Candidate, but given that Apple announced iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 will be released to everyone on September 20, it’s likely the RC build is also the GM.

If you’re currently running a beta of iOS 15 or iPadOS 15, installing the latest GM version is simply a matter of updating system software:

The iPhone or iPad is between 5GB and 6GB and the device must reboot to complete the software update.

Anyone can install iOS 15 public beta on iPhone, or iPadOS 15 public beta on iPad if they’re interested in doing so, but at this point with the final version coming next week, there’s not much reason to unless you want to be ahead of the crowd.

Always be sure to backup your device before installing system software. You can downgrade from iOS 15 beta, assuming backups from iOS 14 are still available for the device.

iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 feature a variety of changes and improvements to the operating systems, including a revamped Do Not Disturb mode called Focus, Safari Extensions support, Safari UI changes, Safari tab groups, Private Relay for Safari to reduce ad tracking, Live Text for selecting text in images, redesigned Notifications, and various changes to built-in apps like Photos, Health, Music, Weather, Calendar, and more.

iPadOS 15 also some iPad specific features, like a revamped multitasking system, and the ability to place widgets anywhere on the iPad home screen.

The latest Apple system software also was planned to include controversial new surveillance functionalities. The surveillance features will automatically scan photos and messages for illegal content and report them to authorities if offending material is found, but the announced postponement suggests those capabilities are due in an upcoming system software update instead of the initial iOS 15 release. Users curious about this specific privacy topic can read more at the Electronic Frontier Foundation at EFF.org.

Assuming no major problems or issues are found, the GM release available today (build 19A344) is likely to be the same build as what comes out next week when iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 are available for all users, on September 20.

Release notes included with the GM/RC download are likely the same as the final version:

iOS 15 brings audio and video enhancements to FaceTime, including spatial audio and Portrait mode. Shared with You resurfaces the articles, photos, and other shared content from your Messages conversations in the corresponding app. Focus helps you reduce distractions by filtering out notifications based on what you are currently doing. Notifications have been redesigned and a new notification summary delivers a collection of notifications so you can catch up on your own time. Maps delivers a beautiful redesign with a new three-dimensional city experience and augmented reality walking directions. Live Text uses on-device intelligence to recognize text in photos across the entire system and on the web. New privacy controls in Siri, Mail, and more provide transparency and give you more control over your data.

• FaceTime links allow you to invite your friends into a FaceTime call, even friends on Android or Windows devices can join from their browser

• Over 40 Memoji outfit choices and up to three different colors to customize your Memoji stickers’s clothing and headwear

• Status appears to your contacts in Messages conversations, indicating your notifications are silenced with Focus

• Notifications can be muted from any app or messaging thread for the next hour or for the day

• Redesigned place cards make it easy to learn about and interact with places, and a new home for Guides editorially curates the best recommendations for places you’ll love

• Voice search lets you search the web using your voice

• Live Text is available from the keyboard letting you insert text directly from the camera viewfinder into any text field

• Web image search allows you to search for images of people, animals, monuments, and more

• Lab results can now be pinned for quick access and include highlights that show how your labs have changed over time

• New animated backgrounds more accurately represent the sun position, clouds, and precipitation (iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR and later)

• On-device personalization allows Siri speech recognition and understanding to improve privately (iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR and later)

• Safari Intelligent Tracking Prevention now also prevents known trackers from profiling you using your IP address

• Custom email domain personalizes your iCloud Mail address and allows you to invite family members to use the same domain

• Memoji options including a cochlear implant, oxygen tubes, or a soft helmet

• App Store in-app events help you discover timely events within apps and games such as a game competition, a new movie premiere, or a livestreamed experience

Redsn0W Update Released, New Features In Tow

On Saturday, we reported that there was a major RedSn0w update on the way. Dev Team frontman MuscleNerd told the Twitter nation that a new version of the popular jailbreak tool would be hitting the web in the very near future.

As promised, the team once again made Sunday ‘Funday’ by releasing the software late last night. While the update doesn’t add support for new firmware, it does come with a host of new features. Hit the jump to see the change log…

• uses DFU mode to try to automatically determine which device and FW you have

• fetches pieces of public IPSWs from Apple (once). Non-public IPSWs must be provided manually (once).  It then caches those pieces for future use.

• “Just boot” is a tethered boot.  Uses whatever “Preferences” you’ve set for boot logo and kernel boot-args

• “Pwned DFU” puts your device in a pwned DFU state for some of the iTunes stuff detailed below

• “Recovery fix” gets past 1015 types of errors (when baseband portion of restore fails).  Should work on iOS5 beta too

• “Select IPSW” is for picking non-public IPSWs, or overriding auto-detection

•“SHSH blobs” has a bunch of options…

• “Fetch” – fetch current PARTIAL blobs on device.  Should complete in under 10 or 15 seconds.  Puts the set of PARTIAL of blobs on your computer as a plist.  Checks if Cydia already has a full set for this device and build.  If not, it submits this PARTIAL set and returns Cydia’s acknowledgement or rejection

• ”Verify”  – cryptographically verifies existing blob files from either redsn0w, TinyUmbrella, or Cydia server.  You can select a whole bunch of blobs to verify at once if you want (like the TinyUmbrella directory)

• “Submit”  – both verifies and submits one or more blob files to Cydia.  This lets you copy your entire TinyUmbrella cache of blobs up to the Cydia server

• ”Query” – queries the Cydia server for all available FULL or PARTIAL blobs for a given set of ECIDs

• “Stitch” – stitches either FULL or PARTIAL blobs to a STOCK or CUSTOM IPSW

1. FULL blobs stitched to a STOCK IPSW gives you a completely self-contained signed IPSW that iTunes will accept without any tricks (no need to go into pwned DFU mode, no need to start TinyUmbrella TSS server, no need to redirect to Cydia server for blobs).

2. PARTIAL blobs stitched to any IPSW requires you to go into pwned DFU mode before running iTunes.  No need to start TU or use Cydia though.

3. stitching either FULL or PARTIAL blobs to a CUSTOM IPSW also requires a pwned DFU start before iTunes restores.  No need to start TU or use Cydia though.

4. stitching is NOT yet supported on iPhones (well, at least not tested).  Need to work out the baseband part of the restore process.

5. will eventually support fetching the blobs directly from Cydia instead of a file on your computer.
