Magic Keyboard features

The Magic Keyboard rocks mechanical keys based on the reliable scissor-switch mechanism with 1mm travel like the latest Mac notebooks. Handy backlight ensures easy typing in the dark. The product’s floating cantilever design and the sturdy hinge allow you to attach your iPad Pro magnetically and to smoothly adjust it to the perfect viewing angle for you.

It has a USB‑C port for passthrough charging and, of course, a built-in Multi-Touch trackpad that pairs with robust pointer support in iPadOS to bring new levels of interactivity to your tablet computing. Check out our video review of the Magic Keyboard embedded below.

Smart Keyboard Folio features

Similar to the Magic Keyboard, the Smart Keyboard Folio offers front and back protection for your shiny Apple tablet bur that’s where the similarities stop. Unlike its Magic-branded counterpart, the Smart Keyboard Folio opens all the way to 180 degrees, which means you can actually hold the tablet in your hand and use it while your keyboard attachment is on.

Contrast this with the Magic Keyboard, with which the user gets a second hinge that allows the front cover to open in an arc between 80 and 130 degrees. That’s also the biggest weakness of the Smart Keyboard Folio because you can only choose between two viewing angles rather than set it to any position between 80 and 130 degrees that feels natural to you.

Here’s Harris’ video review of the Smart Keyboard Folio.

And last but not least, the Smart Keyboard Folio uses fabric so it feels cheaper, the keys are not mechanical so the typing experience isn’t that great and there’s no backlight, making this keyboard pretty much useless in low-light scenarios.

Choosing the right iPad keyboard for you

Apple offers the following first-party iPad keyboards:

Smart Keyboard: Compatible with the 10.5-inch iPad Pro, third-generation iPad Air and seventh-generation iPad. All versions are priced at $159.

Smart Keyboard Folio: Compatible with the 11-inch iPad Pro (1st and 2nd generation) and 12.9-inch iPad Pro )3rd and 4th generation). The 11-inch version is $299 and the 12.9-inch model is $349.

Magic Keyboard: Compatible with the 11-inch iPad Pro (1st and 2nd generation) and 12.9-inch iPad Pro (3rd and 4th generation). The 11-inch version is $179 and the 12.9-inch model is $199.

These keyboards are available in multiple international layouts.

What’s your favorite iPad keyboard?

You can of course opt for a non-Apple iPad keyboard. Not too long ago, there were just a handful of iPad keyboards available. But thanks to the iPadOS 13.4 software update that brought robust pointer and trackpad support, iPad customers can now choose from a variety of iPad keyboard attachments from other manufacturer, with or without a built-in trackpad.

So in your personal opinion, what Apple accessory is better for your iPad in terms of usability, typing, productivity and value for money, the Smart Keyboard Folio or the Magic Keyboard?

7 Reasons Why Magic Keyboard Turns Your Ipad Pro Into A Completely Different Machine

Announced in mid-March, the new trackpad-enabled Magic Keyboard for iPad Pro went on sale earlier this month. Though a bit on the pricey side, we think this accessory is worth every cent due to its smart design and rich pointer support in iPadOS working together to transform and elevate your tablet computing to the next level. In trying to help our readers make informed purchasing decisions, your favorite blog asked our young videographer Harris Craycraft to put together a quick video outlining the key reasons why Magic Keyboard changes everything.

By the way — nice quarantine haircut, Harris! When do you plan on getting it finished?

7 reasons why Magic Keyboard makes sense

Here’s a quick list of the seven reasons mentioned in the video.

1. A more rigid tablet platform

The Magic Keyboard + iPad Pro combo is more rigid and sturdy when used for typing, content editing, etc. Because of the nature of this case, your iPad becomes a little bit more rigid in terms of where and how it can be used, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

2. iMac-like design

Your iPad now floats on a Magic Keyboard, how about that? In other words, you finally get flexible viewing angles like with a typical laptop! Mind blown.

3. Passthrough USB-C charging

The USB-C port built into the case keeps the USB-C port on your iPad free for accessories including external drives, displays and much more. It’s for charging only so you won’t be able to plug things such as USB thumb drives into it. The Magic Keyboard port also won’t let you charge other devices off of it like you can, say, charge your iPhone from your iPad Pro.

4. It’s a joy to type on

Unlike Apple’s Smart Folio case that uses fabric and small keys, this accessory gives you a full-size keyboard featuring the tried-and-tested scissor mechanism that delivers 1mm key travel. Honestly, the iPad typing experience doesn’t get much better than that.

6. It doesn’t wrap around your iPad

Unlike with Apple’s more affordable Smart Folio case, this case cannot be folded all the way behind your tablet. One reason is to protect the keys which are exposed because they’re not covered with fabric like on the Smart Folio case. This dictates how you use your iPad: with the case on, you’re motivated to work on the tablet like you would on your laptop or an iMac.

In order to use your iPad naked, however, or draw with your Apple Pencil on it, you’ll want to take it out of the case. Thankfully, putting the case on and taking it off couldn’t be simpler thanks to the integrated magnets that do the heavy lifting for you.

7. It changes the look, the feel — and the price.

The look — you do get a horizontal Apple logo on the back of the case, and that’s something. The feel — the combination of that black keyboard along with the trackpad and the rest of the case not only looks super stealthy, but feels very smooth to the touch as well.

Pricing and availability

The price — the 11-inch version is $299 and the 13-incher is $349. The high price does change the value proposition somewhat, but it also brings a lot of never-before-possible use cases to the table so you get a near desktop-like experience, and that has gotta be worth something.

For those wondering, the new Magic Keyboard is available for the first and second-generation 11-inch iPad Pro and the third and fourth-generation 12.9‑inch iPad Pro.

Your opinion

Have you tried the Magic Keyboard yet?

If so, what did you think of it?

How To Fix Iphone / Ipad Keyboard Missing Or Disappearing

Are you having trouble activating the on-screen keyboard on your iPhone or iPad? More specifically, is the keyboard not showing up on the screen when you tap on the text field or does it disappear randomly? This could be due to various reasons, but usually it’s not that hard to resolve, so if you’re wondering “why isn’t my keyboard showing up on iPhone / iPad?” then read on to fix the issue.

If you’re one of those unlucky iOS / iPadOS users who’re currently facing this issue, we’re here to help. In this article, we’ll be discussing some basic troubleshooting methods that you can follow to fix the missing iPhone or iPad keyboard and make it reappear on the screen.

Fix & Troubleshoot Missing or Disappearing Keyboard on iPhone & iPad

Make sure to follow each one of these troubleshooting methods individually and check if the keyboard shows up when you tap on a text field. Now, without further ado, let’s get started.

Update iOS or iPadOS

If you have an available iOS or iPadOS software update, install it, as it may resolve the issue for you. You’ll want to backup your device first, of course.

This may resolve the issue for you, as some users found the keyboard was disappearing only on earlier versions of iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 but not on later releases, similar to the slow lagging keyboard issue.

Tap on a Text Input Area

Double tapping or triple tapping into a text area on the screen can often make the keyboard appear if it’s otherwise hidden off the screen.

Rotate the Device

Sometimes rotating the devices screen orientation can make the keyboard appear too, just make sure orientation lock is disabled otherwise rotating won’t accomplish anything.

Force Quit and Relaunch the App

If only a particular app is having problems with the keyboard disappearing, try force quitting it and relaunching the app.

Force quitting apps on iPad and iPhone is as simple as going to the App Switcher and swiping up on the app you wish to quit.

Update the App

Again, if one particular application is causing a problem, check to see if that app has an available update on the App Store. If it does, install the update, it may resolve the vanishing keyboard issue.

Turn Off Bluetooth

Restart the iPhone / iPad

If that troubleshooting step didn’t help, you can try rebooting your iOS/iPadOS device and see if it resolves the issue. Most minor software-related bugs and glitches like this can be resolved by simply rebooting your device. If you’re using an iPhone/iPad with Face ID, long-press the side button and the volume up button to access the shutdown menu. On the other hand, if you’re using a model with Touch ID, you just need to hold the power button. Also, you can shut down your device through settings too.

Reset All Settings

Unusual settings configuration can sometimes cause issues with the stock iOS keyboard on your iPhone and iPad. Hence, restoring your iPhone or iPad’s settings to factory defaults could potentially fix the problem in some cases. If you’re not sure how to do this, simply follow the steps below.

Doing this will not erase the data that you have stored on your iPhone. However, it will restore the keyboard dictionary, network settings, home screen layout, location settings, etc. If you don’t want to permanently lose these settings, you’ll need to back up your device to iCloud or iTunes before doing the factory reset.

Hard Reset Your iPhone / iPad

Nuclear Option: Erase & Restore

That’s all there is to it. By now, you should’ve managed to get the keyboard to show up on the screen.

Still facing issues? Beyond the suggestions offered above, what you can do is get in touch with Apple Support. You can either chat with an Apple Support executive or talk to a live agent at Apple according to your preference.

How To Enlarge Your Iphone Keyboard For Easier Typing

If you have trouble using the small keys of your iPhone keyboard, there are several simple methods to make them bigger and enhance visibility, ensuring a more comfortable typing experience.

Apple provides no clear button or slider to adjust the iOS keyboard size. However, by tweaking a few system settings or using third-party apps, you can enlarge the on-screen keyboard and ensure it’s easier to see each key and type without straining your eyes or adjusting your glasses.

This change is obviously more helpful for people with vision problems and anyone who can’t accurately hit the small virtual keys.

1. Make your keyboard bold

Enabling bold text will make these keys thicker & darker and thus easier to see. Here are the before and after screenshots:

To turn on system-wide bold text:

Go to iPhone Settings and tap Display & Brightness.

Switch on Bold Text.

2. Always show the UPPERCASE keys on the keyboard

All keys of the iPhone keyboard switch between showing lowercase (a, b, c) and uppercase (A, B, C) letters depending on the caps lock setting you use while typing. To make the identification of each key prominent, you can configure your iPhone to always show the uppercase keys. This will make its appearance like a physical keyboard where all the keys are printed in capital letters.

It’s just a visual change. You can obviously type in lowercase letters with this setting enabled.

Here’s how your keyboard will look:

Go through these steps to show only uppercase keys on your iPhone keyboard:

Open the Settings app and tap Accessibility.

Tap Keyboards.

Turn off the switch for Show Lowercase Keys.

3. Use system-wide Larger Text

You can quickly set your iPhone to use slightly larger text and zoomed elements throughout the operating system. Once you do this, the overall height of the iOS keyboard also increases along with everything else. Here’s how it looks:

Follow these steps to turn on display zoom for your iPhone:

Open the Settings app.

Tap Display & Brightness.

Scroll to the bottom and tap Display Zoom.

Choose Larger Text.

Tap Done from the top right and confirm by tapping Use Zoomed.

4. Type in landscape mode

One of the easiest ways to make the keyboard bigger is to type in landscape mode.

Here’s how you can do that:

Open the iPhone Control Center and tap the screen rotation button so that its symbol appears white (and not red).

Go inside an app like Notes, Messages, or WhatsApp.

Rotate your iPhone in landscape mode, and the screen will also turn sideways.

Now start typing with the enlarged keyboard.

5. Use a combination of the above settings

You’re not limited to following just one of the above suggestions.

You can use all the above methods to have a keyboard that’s larger, bolder, and shows bigger uppercase keys in both portrait and landscape orientations.

6. Install and use third-party keyboard apps

You can try some third-party keyboard apps if none of the above tweaks to make your stock iPhone keyboard bigger do the trick.

My all-time favorite iOS keyboard apps are Microsoft SwiftKey and Google Gboard. But they do not have options to increase the onscreen keyboard size. Therefore, you will have to use one of the less popular apps to get a large keyboard on your iPhone.

Note: There may be security implications with using third-party keyboard apps.

That said, I tried several apps that add a big onscreen virtual keyboard to your iPhone. You can download them for free from the App Store, get a hands-on experience, tweak their settings, and settle on the one that seems most comfortable to you.

The steps to set up all these apps are identical to any third-party iPhone keyboard.

Here are seven iPhone apps that offer large onscreen keyboards:

This keyboard can also speak every letter you type.

Drag the A slider to increase the keyboard key size.

1C Keyboard Lite

Using this, you can add a huge virtual keyboard on your iPhone with almost circular keys, helping you see and type with fat fingers.

When typing with this keyboard, tap the settings key and use the plus (+) button to increase the iPhone keyboard size.

Download Reboard

This app’s ‘Slide to adjust Key Size‘ option lets you customize the width of your iPhone keyboard keys.

Download TuneKey

The hexagon keyboard provided by this app seems large and can appeal to some.

Type Nine – T9 Keyboard

Finally, if you or an elderly family member like your grandparents want to use the T9 typing which was omnipresent on older phones, then you can use the Type Nine app. You can also make the keyboard huge by tapping the menu icon from the bottom left and choosing Resize.

Download Type Nine

7. Other suggestions

Besides the above options, here are a few things you can do to type comfortably.

Get a physical keyboard

You can pair an actual keyboard with your iPhone and use it for longer typing sessions. Here are two greatly reviewed options from Logitech:

Upgrade to the Plus or Max model

For obvious reasons, the keyboard of an iPhone mini will be smaller than that of an iPhone Plus or iPhone Max. So, if you constantly have difficulty typing, consider buying a bigger iPhone the next time you decide to switch.

Type on iPad

Even the iPad mini (8.3-inch screen) has a larger keyboard (and more screen area) than any iPhone. If you write a lot of notes or send many messages every day, you can do all that comfortably from your iPad’s big keyboard.
