Christmas gift warning: Barnes & Noble NOOK has malware
Malware by the name of ADUPS has been discovered this week that the most recent version of the Barnes & Noble NOOK tablet. This is a device available for sale from Barnes & Noble currently, and the device works with ADUPS inside when first taken out of its box. Whatever you do, gift receiver on the eve or morn of your favorite holiday, do not connect that NOOK to the internet and start signing in to accounts – hold off!
Information about this appearance of malware aboard the NOOK comes from Database Administrator and Android Security researcher Charles Fisher. Fisher writes for Linux Journal, where he’s suggested that this malware is the same that was found to plague BLU devices just this past week. As Fisher suggested this week, “In the aftermath of the BLU data theft, ADUPS hostile data collection and control over Android may (or may not) be temporarily quelled, but harmful capability remains with the ADUPS agent.”
Fisher continued, “Devices running ADUPS should be considered under malicious control, and they should not be used with sensitive data of any kind.” This malware was found to be able to execute the following, according to Kryptowire. Some of these actions are relatively harmless – but they’re mostly extremely unusual, if not outright dangerous.
• SMS Recording
• SMS Transmission
• IMEI Exfilration
• IMSI (Transmission)
• Call Log Transmission
• Call Contact Information Transmission
• Location Collection and Transmission
• Command Injection
• Remote User Application Update
• Remote User Application Install
• Transmit List of Installed Applications
• Transmit order of application execution
• Programmatic Firmware Update
• Remote Execution and Privilege Escalation (without user notification or request)
• IP Address (Transmission)
• Name (for contacts)
This ADUPS malware comes aboard the Barnes & Noble $49 (or thereabouts) NOOK tablet with code-name BNTV450. This is also known as the NOOK Tablet 7″, available from Barnes & Noble right this minute with a full 4.5-star rating. This device appears to have such a high rating because its users don’t have any clue that malware is present. This malware doesn’t present itself as such – it’s hidden. It does its nasty deeds without the knowledge of the user.
Barnes and Noble’s Chief Digital Officer Fred Argir submitted the following statement to the press, “NOOK Tablet 7″ went on sale on November 26. By that time, the device automatically updated to a newer version of ADUPS (5.5), which has been certified as complying with Google’s security requirements, when first connected to Wi-Fi.”
This, of course, isn’t good enough as many users will go out of their way to avoid notifications of updates, even if they’re recommended by the company that made the device. Especially on a holiday where the NOOK is given as a gift, there’s not going to be time for many users to update their tablet – they’re going to want to try the device out as soon as possible.
“ADUPS has confirmed to Barnes & Noble that it never collected any personally identifiable information or location data from NOOK Tablet 7-inch devices, nor will it do so in the future,” said Argir. “Finally, we are working on a software update to remove ADUPS completely from the NOOK Tablet 7″. That update will be made available to download within the next few weeks, but in the meantime customers can rest assured that the device is safe to use.”
“To Barnes & Noble, your devices with production software should be reviewed by security specialists before a release to manufacturing. Had Kryptowire, NowSecure or Zimperium assesed the security of this Android release, they would certainly have halted attempts to market an Android version with blacklisted malware and an open CVE. Far better to miss the Christmas sales season than to see your customers’ vital data in a Chinese database beyond your jurisdiction.”
We’ll be watching this set of events as they unfold over the next few weeks. Until rectified completely, we recommend – at least – to refrain from using the NOOK 7-inch tablet for now. Certainly don’t open the box, sign in to user accounts, and begin reading books. Hold on, sit tight, and avoid the pain.

Metered Connection feature is quite helpful in limiting the data usage so that you don’t get shocked while billing the data consumed payments. Many operators have provided the plan which can be supposed as Metered Connection. Especially talking about 4G and 5G unlimited plans, after a certain limit, you’ll observe that your bandwidth is reduced to a lower rate; this is generally known as the FUP limit.
Theoretically, Metered Connection is the condition when your operator charges you with direct proportionality of the amount of data used so far. Despite the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it’s a wonderful time we should all remember to enjoy. Everyone deserves to take a break and celebrate the festivities.
Not only is this season about giving – it’s about receiving, too! While we shouldn’t expect to get gifts from Santa 🎅 (he’s got a lot on his plate right now), surely there’s that special something each of us wants to have.
We got curious what SEOs wanted for the holidays, so we asked our Twitter community what their wishes were. Here’s what they had to say.#SEOWishlist2024

Dell is not the only well-known laptop maker to list refurbished deals, with Apple and Lenovo also notable for their efforts in this area. But while Lenovo lists its own refurbished Windows laptops in the US, Dell also manages sales of its secondhand machines in the UK. Right now these Dell deals are available only to UK customers. What is a refurbished laptop or PC?
Refurbished computers can be those that were originally sold with a defect or were otherwise faulty, perhaps subject to a recall. They can also be items that were returned in full working order, for example unwanted gifts.
In Dell’s case they are items that were previously leased out for an average 36-month period and have been returned, which means you might not find the most recent products but you can still source some great savings on slightly older but still decent-quality kit.
The manufacturer will ensure any faults have been fixed before resale, which means that in many cases you can buy a laptop or PC that is almost as good as new but at a fraction of the price.
There will almost certainly still be some signs of wear and tear, however. Dell lists all its refurbished kit with Cosmetic Grade A or B.
An A-graded product is one that is in excellent to very good condition. Some may have no visible damage, while others have only light scratches and minor blemishes. You might, for instance, notice a shiny area on the trackpad or frequently used keys where they have been pressed more than others.
A B-graded product is one that has some scratches or other surface imperfections, but functionally is in full working order. Grade B laptops and PCs are sold cheaper than Grade A products.Refurbished vs Used
“Refurbished” and “used” have two very different meanings. A used PC or laptop will likely have some wear and tear, and some degree of degradation, particularly in terms of battery life. When you buy a used computer you are relying on the assurances of the seller that it is in full working order, and that nothing untoward (such as a virus) has been installed on it.
However, a refurbished computer has been carefully restored by the manufacturer, with all components checked for performance and efficacy and replaced where necessary, and it comes with a limited warranty for additional peace of mind.
Dell’s warranty spans 180 days, and covers defects in materials and workmanship in the hardware. It does not cover software, including the operating system, nor expendable parts (the battery) or any accidental or malicious damage.Should you buy a new laptop instead?
It’s going to be a personal decision whether you buy new or refurbished. There are some instances of people buying refurbished computers only to find out that despite the rigorous checks they are faulty, or that they develop problems later down the line. This is also true of those buying new machines, of course, though these come with a more comprehensive warranty that will span at least a full year. New machines also have zero wear and tear, looking and feeling like a brand-new computer.
However, by taking on some level of additional risk you stand to make significant savings, and you will be doing your bit to help to cut down on the number of working computers that are disposed of, and therefore the manufacture of new machines that can come at a greater cost to the environment.
If you decide to go down the refurbished route we’ve listed some great Dell laptop and PC deals below. Note that these are limited in number and therefore go out of stock fast, so grab them while you can. If you’d rather buy new and are looking for the best value, check out our round-up of the best budget laptops, as well as the best Dell laptop deals and best laptop deals.
Are you struggling to find the perfect gift for the Apple fan in your life this holiday season? With so many iPhone and iPad accessories available on the market today, choosing the perfect something is not so easy. Rest assured, we can help. The best accessories and gift ideas on this list are sure to bring a smile to any iPhone or iPad user.1. Apple Pencil
Definitely one of the most popular iPad accessories around, the Apple Pencil is a must-own for millions of iPad users. Whether it is the original Apple Pencil (see compatibility options listed here) or Apple Pencil 2 for the iPad Pro, this is no ordinary stylus. Manufactured with Apple’s pinpoint responsiveness in mind, the Apple Pencil is the best tool for drawing on the iPad. No matter if the gift recipient is just learning to draw or the next Van Gogh, this is the most important accessory they will need. Staring at around $90 for the original Apple Pencil and around $130 for the second generation, the Apple Pencils are not inexpensive stocking stuffers.2. AirPods
The AirPods are a sure thing to show up on any list of ideas for iPhone or iPad owners and for good reason. All three generations of AirPods are must-own items and arguably the best wireless headphones available today. The built-in W1 chip enables AirPod to pair quickly with any iPhone or iPad. Battery life starts at around four to five hours of talk time. That number increases to around 24 hours when factoring in the extra juice with the charging case. Then consider their highly recognizable design, and AirPods are as much a fashion accessory as they are headphones. Prices begin at around $129 for the first generation and around $249 for the most recent AirPods Pro.3. SteelSeries Nimbus Gaming Controller
Is there an iOS gamer in your life? The SteelSeries Nimbus gaming controller is another fantastic stocking stuffer idea. Connecting over Bluetooth 4.1 technology, the $47 controller enables you to transform your iPad or iPhone into a portable gaming console. Play Fortnite on the go or right on your desk with this hugely popular gaming accessory. The Nimbus is compatible with nearly every iPhone or iPad produced over the last four years and works for both right- and left-handed gamers. With almost forty hours of rechargeable battery life, you can feel comfortable leaving the charger at home for an entire weekend. It can recharge with the same lightning cable as any recent iOS device, which is a terrific bonus.4. Ultimate Ears Boom 3
Keep the holiday music going well into the new year with the Ultimate Ears Boom 3. Already one of the most popular Bluetooth speakers on the market, this waterproof speaker is an outstanding gift. Delivering 360 degrees of sound, the $119 speaker can keep the party going for more than fifteen hours. If a house party quickly becomes a pool party, the Boom 3 is waterproof up to three feet of water for up to 30 minutes. The cylindrical shape is sharp and eye-catching while feeling well-built and durable enough to withstand years of use.5. Anker PowerCore 10,000 Redux
Potentially the most important gift you can give any iPhone or iPad user is that of battery life. Few companies are better equipped to deliver both power and value more than Anker and its PowerCore 10,000 Redux. For around $25, it recharges the iPhone 11 almost three complete times before needing to be recharged. The iPhone 11 Pro Max will also see at least two charges from empty to full. iPad devices and their bigger battery sizes will still see the benefit of the Redux but for a more complete charge, look to the $40 Anker PowerCore 20,000 for just under two complete charges.6. Polaroid ZIP Wireless Mobile Printer
One of the least considered but most necessary products for any iPhone owner is a portable printer. While most photos taken on smartphones end up as memories on social media, many of them deserve to be printed. Enter the $79 Polaroid ZIP wireless mobile photo printer capable of turning out individual photos in under sixty seconds. The 2×3 inch photos are not poster-sized by any stretch of the imagination. However, they can make a great photo collage to hang on a wall. All prints are water- and tear-resistant, making them durable for years of smiles every time you look at each print. The best part? The printer is small enough to be carried in a backpack or small bag. Conclusion
This is far from a complete list. There are almost too many last-minute gift ideas for iPhone and iPad owners. Everything from cases to watch bands makes for excellent last-minute ideas and perfect stocking stuffers. If you are hastily searching for a last-minute gift for the iOS lover in your family, you cannot go wrong with this list.
