Suggested January 2024 Apple November Event Preview: Apple Silicon Macbook Air And Pro, Big Sur Release, More

Apple’s third event in as many months has officially arrived. After previous events focused on iPad, Apple Watch, and iPhone, Apple’s November 10 event will likely focus on the Apple Silicon transition in the Mac lineup.

Read on as we round up everything you need to know ahead of the “One more thing” later today.

When is the Apple Silicon November event?

The Apple Silicon Mac event will take place on November 10 at 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET. It will be completely virtual due to the COVID-19 pandemic, much like the Apple Watch event in September and the iPhone 12 event last month. We expect a pre-recorded video from Apple Park, featuring Tim Cook and a handful of other Apple executives.

You’ll be able to live stream the event through Apple’s website, on YouTube, and through the Apple TV application.

Apple Silicon

Again, the focus of the November 10 event will almost certainly be on Apple’s plans to transition the Mac lineup to Apple Silicon processors. Apple first announced its plans for this transition back at WWDC in June, and the company even teased that the first Apple Silicon Mac would launch to customers in 2023.

Currently, Apple uses Intel processors in the Mac lineup, but this is not the first time Apple has transitioned the Mac to a new processor architecture. In fact, Apple first publicly announced its plans to transition away from PowerPC processors in the Mac to Intel processors back in 2005 at WWDC.

With Apple Silicon, Apple will have more control over their timeline and production of the processors used in the Mac. It’s no secret that the relationship between Apple and Intel has soured over the last several years as the chipmaker faced multiple production delays, thereby also affecting the Mac lineup.

And of course, Apple has shown its prowess in creating its own processors over the years with the iPhone and iPad. Now, it will bring those same processors to the Mac.

Apple’s first round of ARM Macs are believed to be based on the same A14 architecture as seen in the iPad Air and iPhone 12. However, the processors will be optimized for the larger thermal windows and power characteristics of laptops. In fact, back in April, Bloomberg said that the first ARM Mac chip would feature a 12-core design

Here’s what we expect to see first.

13-inch MacBook Pro

Most recently, Bloomberg reported that one of the first Apple Silicon Macs will be a new version of the 13-inch MacBook Pro. This was also reported by the reliable yet cryptic leaker on Twitter L0vetodream and corroborated by Ming-Chi Kuo.

The new 13-inch MacBook Pro with Apple Silicon is expected to look largely similar to the current 13-inch MacBook Pro. That is, we should not expect any dramatic redesigns with this year’s MacBook Pro update. Reports currently indicate that we could get a new, redesigned 14-inch MacBook Pro in 2023.

More details about what to expect from this new MacBook Pro are unclear right now, but we’ll learn more from Apple on Tuesday.

New MacBook Air

Bloomberg, Kuo, and L0vetodream have also reported that one of the first Apple Silicon Macs will be a new 13-inch MacBook Air. This would again be a new MacBook Air with a design similar to the current MacBook Air, but with Apple Silicon inside.

Apple Silicon could be especially drastic in the small and slim form factor of the MacBook Air, offering improved battery life, performance, and thermal capabilities.

Other Mac hardware announcements

Other than those two Mac announcements, Apple is also reportedly developing a new 16-inch MacBook Pro. It’s unclear, however, whether this machine will be announced during Tuesday’s event. It could be coming in early 2023 instead since it is more powerful and includes a dedicated GPU.

Other reports have suggested that Apple could introduce a new 12-inch MacBook as one of its first Apple Silicon Macs. The more power-efficient Apple Silicon chips would reportedly be able to provide 15-20 hours of battery life to a machine like this.

Concept via Svetapple

Apple is also reportedly developing a new iMac, new Mac mini, and new Mac Pro. None of these desktop updates are expected to be announced during Tuesday’s event, and you should keep in mind that Apple has said it will take around 2 years to transition the entire Mac lineup to Apple Silicon.

macOS 11 Big Sur

During Tuesday’s event, Apple is likely to announce the release date for macOS 11 Big Sur. Apple first introduced Big Sur during WWDC 2023 and it’s the sole software update announced at WWDC that has not yet been released to the public.

macOS 11 Big Sur is a massive update for the Mac, including a completely redesigned interface, an all-new Messages application, an all-new Control Center and Notification Center, and much more. You can check out the full coverage of 9to5Mac on what’s new in macOS Big Sur:

For Apple Silicon Macs, the introduction of macOS 11 Big Sur will also include the ability to run iPad and iPhone apps on the Mac. We expect Apple to spend a considerable amount of time talking about this during Tuesday’s event, including demonstrations of popular iPhone and iPad apps running on the first Apple Silicon Macs.

Other possibilities

Outside of the Apple Silicon transition for the Mac, there are a few other possibilities of things Apple could announce during its November event, though some of them are looking unlikely.

AirPods Studio

Reports have long been circulating suggesting that Apple will soon launch its own pair of over-ear headphones. These are believed to exist separately from the Beats brand and offer features such as head and neck detection, custom equalizer settings, and more.

9to5Mac has also found evidence of so-called AirPods Studio in the leaked iOS 14 beta code, including assets showing at least two color options for the new accessory. As for the price, rumors suggest that they will cost $349 for a lower-end “Sport” variant and up to $599 for a “luxury” version made from leather and metal.

A recent report from Bloomberg indicated that AirPods Studio are delayed due to production issues with the design. The headphones were reportedly set to go into production several weeks ago, but mass production was said to have been delayed. This could mean AirPods Studio aren’t actually released to the public until sometime in 2023.

AirTags

For more than a year, rumors have indicated that Apple is developing its own Tile-like item trackers. In June 2023, 9to5Mac reported on assets within iOS 13 that referenced a product type “Tag1,1.” Since then, 9to5Mac discovered evidence of the “AirTags” name and references even appeared in a video published by Apple itself.

We initially expected AirTags to be released during the iPhone 11 event last year, then at WWDC 2023, then during Apple’s September event this year. Most recently, leaker Jon Prosser indicated that AirTags could be announced during the November event.

You can find everything we know so far about AirTags in our full guide right here.

New Apple TV

Apple is also reportedly working on a new Apple TV and a new Siri remote. Evidence of a new Apple TV hardware refresh has been circling around in iOS code for a while, and a report recently indicated that one of the changes will be a faster chip for improved gaming performance.

As for the new Apple TV remote, Bloomberg has suggested that one of the upgrades will be support for the Find My application. This will make it easier for people to locate a remote when it goes missing in the house. Whether or not other improvements are also in store for the controversial Siri remote remains to be seen.

It’s possible that the new Apple TV is introduced during its November event, but it could also be saved for later this year or early next year.

Apple November event wrap-up

As you can see, Apple’s plans are seemingly to start the Apple Silicon transition slowly, and without major drastic changes to the rest of the Mac lineup. The transition will likely start with the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. Reports indicate that more dramatic changes could be one the way sometime in 2023 and beyond, including updates to models like the Mac mini, iMac, and Mac Pro.

New AirPods Pro 2023: Apple Airpods Pro 2 release date prediction & info

AirPods Pro vs AirPods Pro 2 design changes

As yet there are no definitive details on the AirPods Pro 2 design, but between the predictions of Ming-Chi, plus the undisclosed sources of 9to5Mac, the following are probable inclusions.

Form factor

There’s been conflicting reports about the form factor of the AirPods Pro 2, with Ming-Chi Kuo positing earlier in 2023 that he thought a full redesign was likely, with the end product looking more like the in-ear Beats Fir Pro from 2023 – a more aerodynamic appearance without the current ‘stem’ section.

More recently however 52audio leaked an image (shown below) that was apparently of the new AirPods Pro 2, looking much the same as the previous one, except with different ear tips. It pays to be a tad skeptical about such things, however, the site was right in the past when it came to predicting the AirPods 3 design ahead of release.

The current audio processor from Apple is the H1 chip, and the AirPods Pro 2 are likely to see an updated version of this processor. This new chip should allow LC3 codec support, meaning improved sound quality for both music and voice calls, as well as greater stability, power efficiency, and Bluetooth 5.2 support.

ALAC lossless support

Apple Lossless Audio Codec, or ALAC for short, is Apple’s proprietary audio compression technology, that enables the user to enjoy music with absolutely no loss of data and therefore audio quality, compared to the original recording. For this reason, it obviously takes up more bandwidth/storage space on your device. Up until now, this hasn’t been possible on Bluetooth earphones, but it’s thought that the AirPods Pro 2 will be the first to change this.

Will the AirPods Pro 2 support Lighting or USB-C ports?

Again there’s been conflicting reports on this matter. In the tweet below you can see that Ming-Chi Kuo has stated his belief that the charging case of the AirPods Pro 2 will continue to support Lightning connection, rather than upgrading to USB-C.

However, 9to5Mac have stated that USB-C connection will be a reality for the new wireless earbuds. We should know soon enough one way or another.

Advanced head tracking

Unlikely AirPods Pro 2 features

Despite previous rumors about various fitness tracking features the AirPods Pro 2, such as a heart sensor, oxygen meter, and body temperature reader from inside the ear, Mr. Mark Gurman has thrown cold water on this idea. We may see these features in the future, as apparently, Apple is exploring them, but not for this generation.

AirPods Pro 2 price prediction

It’s been a good while since the last AirPods Pro were released (October 2023 to be exact), so we can’t expect the AirPods Pro 2 to cost the same amount as these did upon release i.e. $249 / £249 (Gad daymn inflation).

iDropnews estimates the price at anywhere between $249 – $299, and we think something closer to the latter number is the most likely.

Here’s how other premium wireless earbuds from competing brands are currently priced on Amazon:

Apple AirPods Pro 2 improvements in iOS 16

In the latest iOS 16 Beta there have been a couple of improvements which improve the functionality of Apple audio devices, that will be rolled out the AirPods Pro 2 when both the full version of iOS 16 and the AirPods Pro 2 are released.

Automatic Switching – a feature that lets you seamlessly transition between listening audio inputs from your iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Personalized Spatial Audio – improved spatial audio for when you’re using your AirPods Pro along with your iPhone, using its TrueDepth camera.

L3 codec firmware support – (which we’ve already mentioned the AirPods Pro 2 will be coming with above).

Apple AirPods Pro 2 vs Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro vs Google Pixel Buds Pro

The two biggest competitors to the Apple AirPods Pro 2 are the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Buds 2 Pro and the recently released Google Pixel Buds Pro. We’ll have to wait until all three of these premium earbuds are released and given in-depth reviews to see how they match.

Apple AirPods Pro 2 name?

There’s been some talk about whether or not the AirPods Pro 2 will actually be called ‘the AirPods Pro 2’. Alternative names doing the rounds online are ‘SoundPods’ and ‘AudioPods’, but these are completely baseless and unlikely in our opnion (not least because they sounds a bit naff and redundant). Ultimately the name AirPods Pro 2 is by far the most likely, as it fits into Apple’s existing naming conventions and is a well-known brand.

Final Word

What To Expect From The Apple Spring Event 2023

Putting an end to months of rumors, Apple has announced its spring event titled “ Peek Performance” which is set to be held on March 8, 2023. Going by leaks, the Cupertino giant is likely to launch multiple all-new products. From a more efficient M2 chip to the long-awaited iPhone SE 3, Apple is planning to set the tone for the rest of the year with notable announcements. If you are curious to take a sneak peek into what the spring event has got in store, here is everything you can expect from Apple’s “Peek Performance” spring event.

Apple Spring Event 2023: All You Need to Know

While WWDC and iPhone events (which take place in summer and fall respectively) are usually the highly anticipated events from Apple, the spring event has showcased some major launches in recent times. Being usually Apple’s first event of a year, it allows the tech giant to bridge the gap between flagship announcements and also offer up quick updates regarding the performance of its products. Will this event be on the same line?

iPhone SE 3

Rumors about iPhone SE 3 aka Apple’s budget smartphone have been going on for quite some time. However, the recent leaks have almost confirmed that the launch of the budget-friendly iPhone is just around the corner. So, what sort of features will this phone come with?

Design & Display

If you were expecting iPhone SE 3 to finally come with an all-screen design with a trimmed notch, you may be disappointed to know that Apple’s budget iPhone will continue to look age-old. Yeah, you heard it right; the blast from the past continues to be relevant even in 2023.

While some wild reports have suggested that Apple will launch the device as iPhone SE Plus with a larger 5.7-6.1-inch, I would recommend you take them with a pinch of salt.

A15 Processor

Probably the biggest highlight of the iPhone SE 3 is the powerful A15 chip- the same brain that powers the iPhone 13 Series. Equipped with the fastest processor, the smartphone will stand out in the budget category.

5G Connectivity

Another major highlight of the iPhone SE 3 will be the 5G. Apple will pitch the smartphone as the most affordable 5G phone in the market. Even though the latest iteration of cellular is yet to go global, Apple wants to cash in on every opportunity to highlight its budget smartphone.

Storage, RAM, and Battery

iPhone SE 3 will come in three storage variants such as 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB. The device may include 4GB RAM and come with the same 1,821mAh battery. Though the device could see a significant bump in the battery capacity if the rumored “SE Plus” becomes a reality.

What Makes iPhone SE 3 a Worthy Upgrade?

In a very crowded world inundated by smartphones with a modern-looking design and display even in the budget category, iPhone SE 3 looks quite odd, with almost a decade-old design. Yeah, I’m counting the days from iPhone 6 (2014) that doesn’t look any different from SE 2.

However, what makes it a compelling proposition is the ability to deliver top-notch performance both in terms of speed and camera efficiency. Pair that with the 5-6 years of iOS updates as well as affordable pricing and SE 3 becomes a solid contender for budget-minded customers.

If you are someone who doesn’t necessarily need to be on the bleeding edge of technology and require a smartphone that can check off most essential boxes including pocket-friendly design, reliable performance, and more than decent cameras without costing an arm and a leg, SE 3 may be your preferred choice.

iPad Air 5

Design & Display Rear Camera

In terms of optics, the iPad Air 5 will feature a 12MP wide camera with minor improvements. The ultra-wide camera and the LiDAR Scanner will continue to be exclusive to the pro variants.

A15 Bionic Chip

iPad Air 5 will come with the latest A15 bionic chip which will improve both performance and battery life. Touted to be up to 50% faster than the leading competition, A15 is more conducive for video streaming, high-octane gaming, and other intensive tasks.

5G Connectivity

Just like iPhone SE 3, iPad Air 5 will also be 5G compatible, which will put it in the same league as iPad Pro 12.9-inch 5, iPad Pro 11-inch 3, and iPad mini 6.

Storage, RAM, and Battery

After being unveiled at the much-awaited Peek Performance event, iPad Air 5 will be available for preorder straightaway. As far as pricing is concerned, Apple will play it safe by keeping it unchanged – $599.

Should You Upgrade to iPad Air 5?

If you already own iPad Air 4, upgrading to Air 5 may not be a great move as there is not much difference between the two models. However, if you are planning to upgrade from older models like iPad Air 3 or the budget iPad, it would be a big jump.

To find out how well iPad Air 5 stacks up against the likes of iPad mini 6 and iPad Pro 11-inch 3, we will present a detailed comparison once the device launches on March 8. So, stay tuned in for that.

All-New 13-inch MacBook Pro

An updated version of the 13-inch MacBook Pro is also on the cards. While the notebook will look similar to the current 13-inch model, it will pack upgraded innards. It will be introduced as a lower-end variant of the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models that feature M1 Pro and M1 Max chips.

M2 Chip

According to reports, the M2 chip will be available in 9 and 10-core as compared to the 7 and 8-core GPU options available with the M1 chip. If that happens to be the case, it wouldn’t be wrong to expect a significant jump in performance from the next generation of M-Series chip. On this very note, it would be interesting to see how well M2 fares when compared with M1 Pro and M1 Max.

Higher-End Version of Mac mini

2023 may be a huge year for Mac mini as Apple is gearing up to launch a higher-end version. The Cupertino giant is said to overhaul the design of the new Mac mini. With M1 Pro and M1 Max Apple silicon chips, it will have plenty of horsepower. Needless to say, the all-new Mac mini will replace the current Intel Mac mini options; which might just be the final nail in the coffin of the Apple and Intel association.

How to Watch Apple’s March 8 Peek Performance Spring Event

Apple will stream the Peek Performance March 8 event on its website and in the Apple TV app. Besides, you can also catch it up through Apple’s official YouTube channel. To ensure you don’t miss out on it, make sure to set a reminder. You can also watch the event on this page via the embedded video stream.

Note: For viewers in India, the event will be streaming at 11:30pm IST on March 8.

Our selections:

Apple Black Friday deals: iPad

Amazon got things started early by offering the latest 9.7-inch iPad on sale for $249. Best Buy is now matching that price with the opportunity to save even further on the 32GB model. The 128GB model with LTE is currently $499 or without for $330, which is the best price that we’ve tracked.

Those looking at the latest iPad Pro models may be left out in the cold, aside from MacMall taking $50 off select configurations. The previous generation model is now available for up to $150 off at Best Buy, however late Thursday night Amazon is now taking $155 off select models, making it the lowest price we’ve seen. iPad mini 4 is also marked down to $250 at Best Buy, which is the best price that we’ve ever tracked.

Apple Black Friday deals: Apple Watch

B&H has already rolled out aggressive discounts on the Apple Watch Series 3 LTE model starting at $279. This includes various band configurations in both sizes. Tax benefits are available in select states. Shop the entire sale here.

Macy’s introduced its much-anticipated Apple Watch Series 3 discount. While the 38mm $199 model has sold out for now, you can still grab the 42mm at $229. This offer is expected to re-surface later this week at Target.

Apple Black Friday deals: HomePod

Best Buy is now offering Apple HomePod at $250, which is good for $99 off the regular price. This is the second best offer that we’ve tracked all-time on Apple’s in-house speaker. We are leery of this deal selling out, so jump on it now if you’re at all interested.

Apple Black Friday deals: iPhone

Walmart will be offering up to $400 gift cards with purchase on new iPhones starting on Friday. Verizon is now taking $400 off the latest iPhones when you hop on their payment plan. Best of all? No trade-in required. Those looking for unlocked devices and wanting to pay outright will want to check out eBay’s Black Friday offers where iPhone XS and XS Max are each being discounted.

More deals are expected to pop-up throughout Black Friday and we’ll update this post accordingly. Best Buy’s offer of up to $150 off all of the latest iPhones is now live, but keep in mind that this offer is focused on monthly payment plans. If you (or your kids) don’t need the newest models, iPhone 6 is down to $99 in a pretty notable Walmart doorbuster sale.

Sprint has an intriguing offer currently going where you can grab an iPhone 7 from $100 on installment plans, which works out to just $4 per month. You can add a 6th generation 9.7-inch iPad for double that. This is a great deal for kids and grandparents that don’t require the latest technology.

Apple Black Friday deals: CarPlay

Best Buy has a number of notable CarPlay deals going this morning. We’re eyeing the $270 Sony model that is at its new all-time low price. You can expect more CarPlay discounts to creep up at Best Buy throughout this week.
