Apple is giving its social media department a significant shot in the arm this week. The Cupertino-based company has hired Musa Tariq, the former social media chief for both Nike and Burberry. At Nike, Tariq ran general social media marketing as well as social media partnerships with athletes across all Nike product platforms, and at Burberry he led “strategy and innovation” for social media…
Apple currently utilizes several forms for marketing, but the company’s social media presence has not been up to par with some of the viral marketing campaigns led by its competitors in recent years. Apple currently runs Facebook Pages accounts for iTunes and the App Store, Twitter accounts for several iTunes-related services, and top executives such as Tim Cook, Angela, Ahrendts, Phil Schiller, and Eddy Cue have semi-active Twitter feeds.
But beyond that, Apple’s approach to social media-based marketing has been limited at best. At Nike, Tariq boosted the Oregon-based company’s product portfolio and athlete relationships via social media, and at Burberry, Tariq created the fashion brand’s social media imprint in China and led social media for the firm’s famous annual London Fashion Show events. With this newfound expertise on its staff, it seems likely that Apple’s social media presence will grow rapidly in the coming months and years. Tariq confirmed his new role with Apple on his personal Twitter account, and his title at the company is “Digital Marketing Director, Apple.”
To get an idea of where Apple could take social media, it is worth looking at one of Tariq’s most notable campaigns. One of Tariq’s most critically acclaimed social media campaigns for Burberry was the “Tweetwalk.” This Tweetwalk campaign shared images of outfits soon to hit the London Fashion Show runway in their backstage form. Analysis of this campaign revealed that it significantly boosted talk of both Burberry’s products and the Fashion Show. Tariq also created a campaign called “Acoustic,” which utilized YouTube to showcase musicians singing acoustic versions of popular songs (video above).
At Nike, Tariq led a campaign with athletes to tease a new shoe by creating videos describing the shoe without showing the actual design. Tariq’s fame within the social media community was also exemplified by multiple articles reporting on his 2011 move from Burberry to Nike. Many of the reports noted that his hire was a significant investment for Nike and a major loss for Burberry.
Besides his expertise in social media and his abilities to improve Apple’s marketing efforts, there are other reasons why this is a notable hire for Apple. First, Tariq comes from Burberry, the former employer of recently appointed Apple retail and online stores chief Angela Ahrendts. According to a source, Tariq reported directly to Ahrendts and Burberry and he was instrumental in working with Ahrendts on growing Burberry’s global brand. It is likely that Tariq will work closely with Ahrendts at Apple on her ambitions for taking Apple’s retail precense in the future. As a source said, Ahrendts “loves [Tariq] to bits in a colleague kind of way.”
This hire also continues Apple CEO (and Nike Director) Tim Cook’s approach to just picking Nike employees up left and right for his own company. Today’s hire follows the poaching of a pair of high-profile Nike FuelBand engineers. It is certainly possible that Tariq’s work on social media marketing could tie into Apple’s marketing push for the upcoming fashion and fitness-oriented wearable band. Apple recently hired watchmaker Tag Heuer’s Vice President of Marketing to work on the future wearable product, and sources previously said that Apple has been demonstrating the device to high-profile athletes.
Lastly, this new Apple hire represents a significant departure in the company’s thinking about social media. Amid an on-going breakup with marketing firm Media Arts Lab, Apple Senior Vice President of Marketing Phil Schiller dismissed social media tracking as something that he can just control himself:
I think paying money for social media tracking tools is nuts. It is easy to track social media, I do it every day, there are lots of summary feeds, groups, and notification tools built right in to the social networking sites, all free. (i think the guys at samsung sat around a coffee table watching Twitter and Facebook feeds and didn’t need to pay for anything in the example below).
It seems that this philosophy has now changed, and Apple has significant plans in store for its future marketing efforts.

As promised, Apple has just released the iOS 8.4 software update featuring an all-new Music app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch to the public after testing with developers since mid-April. While it includes smaller changes throughout, the update primarily delivers an overhauled Music app with Apple Music (notice the new icon), its brand new subscription music streaming service, and Beats 1, its 24/7 live radio station that launches today.
Other changes include audiobook playback moving to the built-in iBooks app with support for CarPlay while textbooks created using iBooks Author will now be available on the iPhone.
In addition to the Apple Music service, non-subscribers will still notice a redesigned Music app an Up Next feature for managing current music playback and access to Apple’s Beats 1 streaming radio station. With Apple Music, iOS 8.4 includes artist activity and access to a streaming music catalog built-in to the Music app.
Beats Music subscribers can migrate their music libraries to Apple Music using the latest software version on iOS while Spotify and Rdio subscribers can try this unofficial workaround to migrate playlists.
Apple Music is available for free for three months in over 100 countries. United States pricing starts at $9.99/month for individual users then goes to $14.99/month for group plans through Family Sharing that include up to six users.
The update also includes a fix for the infamous ‘effective power’ iMessage bug discovered last month.
The iOS 8.4 release is available as an OTA software update within the Settings app on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, or through iTunes for devices with limited storage availability.

This guide is divided by the sections you see in the Music app on Apple TV. So, browse them all or use this table of contents to jump to a certain spot.
Here, you can Browse featured videos or albums, view Apple’s picks, check out new music, listen by mood, see what’s hot or what’s been updated, and much more.
Take a scroll through the Videos section if you enjoy music videos. You can browse by featured, new, genre, essentials, and live music.
Actions for videos

Radio is the section you want for radio shows. Browse the sections for radio hosts, interviews, local, international, or stations by genre.

For all of the music you save and playlists you create, head to the Library section of Music on Apple TV. You’ll see navigation on the left side that lets you switch from Playlists to Songs to Composers. Below that, you have genres that categorize your music for you.
Certain areas in your Library navigation can be sorted, shuffled, or simply played.
You can sort playlists by type, title, recently added, or recently played. But you can sort albums, songs, and complications by artist, title, or recently added. And finally, you can sort songs within the genres by title, recently added, oldest first, or newest first.
This shows what you are currently playing. For instance, if it’s a song, you can use actions to view the lyrics and see more songs like it. Or if it’s an album, for example, you can swipe to see the other songs on it, add it to your library, or go to the artist detail page.

If you’re playing a song that you’d like to add to your library or see the lyrics for, this is easy. While the song is playing, you’ll see two buttons below the artwork and two above it.

You have similar actions for an album and its songs as those above. In addition, when you select an album, you’ll see the following action buttons on the detail screen as well as the screen when playing a certain song from the album.
Add: Add the album to your library.
Shuffle: Shuffle the play order for the songs in the album.
Autoplay: Enable for continuous music playing automatically.
Go to Artist: Go to the artist details page to see additional songs, albums, videos, a biography, similar artists, and more.
More: Select from actions like Go to Artist, Add to Library or Playlist, Play Next or Later, Love/Unlove, and Suggest More/Less Like This.
The Search feature lets you find artists, songs, lyrics, albums, and more in the Music app. Hold the Microphone button to dictate or use the letters to spell out your search term.

Apple’s Connect service, the company’s own aspiring social component to Apple Music, has visibly taken a back seat in iOS 10. In its original conception, Connect was resourceful and prominently placed in Music. Fast forward one year and you would be forgiven for thinking that Apple’s network for musicians and their followers had been as good as abandoned over night.
Why did I not notice earlier? Presumably because Apple did not deliver the goods with iOS 9 and gave very little impetus to repeatedly check in on my artists’ Connect posts. It was never habit-forming as its features, or lack thereof, did not resonate enough with me to remind myself of its existence on a day to day basis. Sooner than later, the Connect icon became nothing but an idle tab wedged in between Radio and My Music.
Before picking apart the shortcomings of Connect, one needs to spare a thought for Apple and the conundrum they now face. With iOS 9 they were bold believers of Connect (promoted and highlighted like in the image above) and copped an echo unsavoury enough to relegate the service to almost-oblivion. But shunned as it is now, future improvements will also escape most users’ notice – because out of sight, out of mind.
The key would therefore be to subtly promote Connect back to Music’s main interface, without displacing the new hierarchy in the bottom row of icons. Alternatively, talks of a standalone app for Connect could resurface, especially in light of a crucial deal Apple recently struck with an audience-grabbing pop culture fad.Plan A
Secondly, there are plenty of other deft ways to display Connect content in Music without forcing a dedicated tab down our throats. When I tap the album art in my Podcast app, the cover flips around and offers me show-notes. A mechanism like this for Apple Music would make checking your artists’ latest status so, so easy. When you start to listen to a song and glance at the album cover, wouldn’t it be cool to be able to hit that album and read what they have been up to on Connect?
Plan A requires more intuitive snippets of Connect sprinkled here and there inside Music, as opposed to a full blown tab. Furthermore, integration of Connect into other Apple apps, such as Apple News, would enrich News on the one hand and most certainly boost engagement with Connect on the other.Plan B
Take the Connect out of Music and launch a brand new Connect app. Said application would have to nicely link and jump between Apple’s social network and Apple Music (similar to how Facebook has split Facebook from Messenger), and would give Apple the opportunity to unleash something big, colorful and beautiful on the inside.
Apple Music in itself is a beast, which impacts and constraints Connect’s depth notably. You just cannot have a fully fledged app inside another app. Therefore, offering a new platform that houses a far richer social component, including chat functionality amongst followers or possibly discussion boards, could attract the same people feeling uninvolved with Connect right now. At the same time, Connect could also easily disassociate from the reputation of delivering music related content only, a shift that Apple is eventually likely to make anyway. Connect could represent the new haven for all subscription-based entertainment distributed by Apple.
A fitting moment to pull the trigger on the transformation of Connect would be in early 2023, when Apple are reportedly set to release the first instalments of Carpool Karaoke. As peculiar as the acquisition of it seemed at the time, there is no doubt Apple will ensure it gets proper exposure when released. What better way to promote a new app and the singing skits than to introduce a brand new icon on your home screen?Does Connect still have enough fight left?
It remains to be seen if Apple still has hopes for the Connect platform. Time is definitely not on its side and a facelift or complete overhaul becomes more unlikely with every day passing, in as much as innovation is only going to stick with customers if they haven’t already dismissed the product. This leaves us with the second approach. Is it feasible? Absolutely. Could Apple be of the same opinion? We will find out.
The proposition of Connect is great and we know Apple has the muscles to push it, but they will have to prove they also have the smarts.

The iPod sold hundreds of millions of units so far, but sales began contracting just a few years following its debut. In hindsight, you could even say that the AirPods design is rooted in the iPod’s trademark white earbuds. No matter how you look at it, the iPod gave Apple enough breathing room and financial clout to come up with another great product, the iPhone, and the rest is history.
