Suggested January 2024 5 Reasons Why You Should Buy A Mechanical Keyboard

There you are, sitting on your office chair. Feeling comfortable and good about yourself. Let me tell you something. You are lost. You are a nobody. Why? Because you don’t have a mechanical keyboard in your life! Like some evangelical preacher, I have an idea I need to sell you. That is the glory of the mechanical keyboard. If you accept the mechanical keyboard into your life, you could be experiencing increased comfort, improved productivity, and glory! It will change the way you type forever! Don’t just ask me, there are plenty of fanatics that have forever converted from using cheap, rubber-dome keyboards to high-quality mechanicals. I have made a short list of five reasons why you should switch to a mechanical keyboard. I have faith that you will see the light.

The second reason why you need to switch to a mechanical keyboard is ergonomics. Mechanical keyboards generally have higher quality keycaps which are rounded to let your fingers rest on them more comfortably. Traditional laptop keys, with the exception of Lenovo’s, are flat. Flat keys are good for space-saving designs but you not only lose precision, but also comfort. I find flat keys uncomfortable to type on for long periods because I have to hit them “head on” in order not to make an error. Also, it is very easy to hit these keycaps on the corners which will cause your fingers to slip and mis-type. If you hit the corner of a keycap on a mechanical keyboard, you still have a good chance of registering the input. The longer “throw” of mechanical keyboards are also more comfortable for long typing sessions compared to the short engagement point of chicklet-style keyboards. For a long time, I thought the main attribute of an ergonomic keyboard is shape. After using the Microsoft Natural Ergonomic keyboard for 2-3 years and using my Leopold Tenkeyless for about 5 months, I realize that it’s not about the shape. The main reason mechanical keyboards are better is the key switches.

The third benefit is reduced strain. I realize this is closely related to comfort but I felt that this deserved its own section simply because of RSI(Repetitive Strain Injury). We use our computers for hours and some of us do not take RSI seriously. I take good care of my hands. And so should you. For most people, their hands are their livelihood. Hand health is very important if you are a musician, laborer, or athlete. One thing I’ve notice after spending a few months with my mechanical keyboard compared to keyboards of my past is finger pain. I use to get finger pain after prolonged typing on the rubber dome keys. They were all I knew so I didn’t question. It wasn’t until I was in the market for a better keyboard where I found out about mechanical key switches. Subsequently, it wasn’t until I was typing on them for hours until I realized my finger pain was mainly caused by the cheap rubber-dome keyboards. If you are on the computer for hours, or if your profession involves extensive amounts of typing, consider investing on a mechanical keyboard for this very reason. These key switches will reduce finger strain. Your hands will thank you.

The fourth benefit of using a mechanical keyboard is improved speed. A more precise, comfortable keyboard means improved typing speed. I was never a speed typist. Barely being able to type 25 WPM, after a few months of serious training, I can now type 60-70 WPM. Your mileage may vary but you will improve your speed. If not in burst typing, definitely in endurance typing. That’s typing long essays or reports. Wiki has the average typing speed rated at 33 WPM. If you are over this, you are doing very well.

The last and most important reason why you need a mechanical keyboard? They’re fun! That may sound silly to say but after getting one, I now enjoy typing. I like the sound of these Cherry MX browns. Some people like the blues. You can’t go wrong either way. They’re great to type on. Mechanical keyboards have their own unique personalities. From the simple Leopold Tenkeyless to the highly sought after HHKB Pro 2. Typing shouldn’t be a chore. Most people probably won’t be competing on typeracer for leisure, but mechanical keyboards will make you smile. It’s like buying a luxury car. Sure, you don’t NEED leather heated seat with power everything but if you can afford it, why not treat yourself? Especially a tool that you will spend years using. Once you punch the keys, you will see the light

Mechanical Keyboards: Should You Switch?

What Is a Mechanical Keyboard?

A mechanical keyboard uses actual, physical switches underneath the keys to determine when the user has pushed a key. Press a key, and you press its switch down. Press the switch down, and the keyboard sends a signal to the PC telling it that you pressed that key.

At first, this design doesn’t sound so remarkable. After all, you already have a keyboard, and you can tell when you’ve pressed a key: You push one down, and a letter pops up on the screen. Take a second, however, to think about how you know you’ve pressed a key–it’s probably because you’ve pushed the key down as far as it will go, only after which do you see something happen on your PC.

Most keyboards are composed of a set of three plastic membranes, with rubber dome-shaped switches underneath each key. Press a key, and the rubber switch pushes through a hole in the middle membrane to connect the top and bottom membranes, which creates an electrical circuit that causes the keyboard to send the input to your PC. This keyboard design is inexpensive and spill-resistant, but it doesn’t give you as much tactile or audible feedback when you press a key, which can change the way you type.

30 Days With a Mechanical Keyboard

Over the past week, I’ve been lucky enough to spend some quality time with a handful of high-end mechanical keyboards, including the Das Keyboard Model S Professional, the Diatec Filco Majestouch Ninja and Majestouch 2 Camouflage, and the SteelSeries 6Gv2 and 7G.

Of course, each of these keyboards uses different parts and design elements, and each one has a different build quality, layout, and weight. So I’m going to save the side-by-side comparisons for our upcoming mechanical keyboard review roundup, and instead talk about my overall experiences here.

Many laptop aficionados are big fans of Lenovo laptop keyboards because they offer more tactile response than your average laptop keyboard does. Each key requires a certain amount of force to actuate, and the key does not yield until you push down with enough force. Lenovo keyboards feel “crunchy,” for lack of a better word. Each keystroke feels more pronounced and intentional on a Lenovo laptop keyboard than it does on a lesser keyboard, and the increased physical feedback from the keyboard lets your brain know when you’ve pushed each key hard enough that you can move on to the next one.

Mechanical keyboards are loud: While the actual volume depends on what kind of switch your keyboard uses, as well as on your typing technique, mechanical keyboards are significantly louder than other kinds of keyboards. Personally, I like the sound–it’s an additional form of feedback for each keystroke–but depending on where you’re doing your typing, this sound could be a problem. None of my coworkers noticed a significant noise increase after I switched to the mechanical keyboards, but we’re often wearing headphones during work anyway.

If you’re using your keyboard in a room where someone else can hear you type, they may find it distracting. Some PCWorld readers have reported that they can’t even talk on Skype with people while they’re typing on a mechanical keyboard because it drowns out the voices. I didn’t notice this problem, myself–it depends on your microphone setup–but it’s certainly something to be aware of.

Mechanical keyboards last longer: Mechanical switches are certified to last longer than rubber-dome switches pretty much across the board, regardless of the manufacturer. For example, SteelSeries offers both mechanical-switch keyboards and rubber-dome keyboards, and the company’s mechanical keyboards (the 6Gv2 and 7G) are both tested for up to 50 million key presses, while its rubber-dome Shift is good for only 15 million–and that’s with high-durability switches that last longer than the typical 1 to 5 million presses for most rubber-dome keyboards. So even if a mechanical keyboard costs ten times what a cheap dome-switch keyboard costs, the mechanical one should last long enough to make the investment worthwhile–unless you spill your drink on it, that is.

Should You Switch?

You don’t need to go out and buy a mechanical keyboard for a light-use family PC or a home theater PC, and you won’t want to lug one around for your laptop or tablet. But if you’re a PC power user and you’re willing to shell out a few hundred dollars on a high-end CPU or graphics card, don’t cheap out with a pack-in stock keyboard. You might find that moving up from your old rubber-switch keyboard to a nice mechanical model could make your computing more enjoyable overall. And don’t forget to check back soon for our upcoming mechanical keyboard roundup!

6 Reasons Why You Should Not Install Android P

However, there are factors that should be considered. Factors that tell you why you shouldn’t jump the gun just yet. Sure, you will get a glimpse of latest OS of the largest OS in the world by installing Android P DP1 build right away, but there are risks involved. Here they are.

Why you shouldn’t install Android P

1. Not suitable for daily use, even Google says it

As you may know, this is a developer build. So, are you a developer? Do you have apps that you need to get up to speed to Android P’s new APIs and features? Well, nope (most probably). So, do not install Andriod P for just because you have the Pixel. (We did, anyway!)

Google says the current build is not fit for daily use. It is only intended for developers so that can prepare their apps for the Android P by the time it available for the public.

2. Poor battery life

The developer builds are well known for their worse battery life. Remember, almost no apps are optimized for Android P yet, and hence your favorite apps may start draining huge battery juice until they do. And we are not seeing this drawback for the first time, as we experience issues with battery life on DP builds of earlier Android OS too.

3. Slow apps and poor performance?

What, you may ask: new Android OS update and poor performance? Isn’t this supposed to be opposite of this? Well, since apps are not optimized, and even the system itself is in alpha stage, such that Google has itself indicated it’s not suitable for daily use, this isn’t entirely out of the blue.

The apps may work slowly, and you may even experience jerk and occasional lag one your Pixel, arguably the smoothest phone available on the market.

4. Apps may force close and not work at all

Yep, this is also entirely possible that your favorite Andriod apps and games aren’t working one bit on the Android P update. That may happen because of the underlying changes in Android P which may be very different to OS version up to Oreo.

5. Don’t install if you have got only one device

In case you maintain two phones for usage, you might make-do with issues above to enjoy the new UI and features on the offer in Android P. However, if you have only one device on which you have to rely completely, things would turn awkward when you discover massive battery drain in idle state, or apps force closing or not working for you. Better stay away.

6. You have to travel

It doesn’t require any rocket science to measure how much we rely on our smartphones these days. Right? If you plan to travel, you wouldn’t want to be disconnected because of any Android P issue, right? Especially because you might not have any alternatives on the road, it’s safe to not travel with a developer preview 1 build installed on your only device.

Let us know why you think one shouldn’t install the Android P just yet. Is there any other reason you know?

5 Reasons You Should Be Playing World Of Warships

If you’ve yet to sample the open-water warfare delights of World of Warships, you’re missing out.

For the uninitiated, World of Warships is a naval-warfare themed MMO released back in late 2023, but don’t let the comparatively old age of this game fool you – it’s a doozy.

Players duke it out in sea-faring war vessels, plotting tactical courses to destroying their enemies with all the strategic brilliance of an admiral.

Should you require a little more convincing, here are five reasons you should be playing World of Warships.

1. Warships Galore

Channeling the heyday of naval warfare of the First and Second World Wars, World of Warships offers no less than 200 ships for players to commandeer and set upon the seven seas.

We have destroyers for those favoring speed, stealth, and attacking their enemies under cover of the waves with destructive torpedoes.

There are fast-firing cruisers designed to both versatile against other ships and airborne aircraft in equal measure, whether it be defending a fleet or spearheading an attack.

Then, there are the massive battleships capable of devastating attacks, but equally able to sustain damage while watching valiantly over the rest of your fleet.

And, finally, aircraft carriers that bridge the gap with the skies by offering a launching pad for aerial attacks, scouting, and coordinating versatile grand battle strategies.

2. Play As One of The 20th Century’s Most Powerful Naval Powers

The ships are impressive, but we’d be nowhere without the grandest naval powers of yesteryear.

In World of Warships, you can play as the USSR, USA, UK, Japan, Nazi Germany, France, and Italy.

Alongside you can play as regional cohorts. There’s Pan-Asia bringing together vessels from China, Thailand, Korea, and Indonesia. The Commonwealth allying nations from the former British Empire. Finally, we have a Pan-America faction and a European contingent.

The beauty of offering such a generous spread of nations is that each of them has strengths and weaknesses, adding the strategic depth of the game. One may be better suited to a particular task while failing miserably at another.

3. Intense Naval Battle Locations

We’ve got the ships and the naval powers, but where World of Warships truly comes into its element is the diverse real-world naval battle scenarios, each with dynamic weather ranging from obscuring mist to storm ridden choppy seas.

These sandbox maps are located all over the globe from the polar ice caps to the idyllic turquoise water tropics, by way of narrow straits and the islands of the Aegean Sea, and everything in between. There’s even a map set in space with asteroids and a vacuum in place of the seas.

4. Gripping PvP Skirmishes

You’ve chosen your ship, assigned a naval power to your fleet, and chosen a map; now, it’s time to jump into battle. In what is among the most thrilling, not to say, intense player versus player combat of any game we’ve come across in recent years, World of Warships’ online multiplayer component is nothing short of exhilarating.

If it sounds a bit too much, you can also team up with friends and play against bots for a slightly more forgiving experience while you ply your trade as a commander.

5. It’s Free To Play

While all the above are reason enough to try out World of Warships, the best part is that it is entirely free-to-play. The gameplay also unlocks access to new ships and goodies, rather than having to fork out cash through micro-transactions. It’s a grind, but an all too pleasant one.

You can, however, opt for a paid premium account for extra XP boosts or unlock new ships and tech with real-world currency if you are so inclined.

5 Best Airpods And Airpods Pro Waterproof Cases You Should Buy

Best AirPods and AirPods Pro Waterproof Cases

Before exploring the cases, it would be apt to weigh a few vital points upfront:

So, What Should You Expect from Waterproof Covers?

Most high-quality covers designed for AirPods come with an IP67 rating. That means they are good enough to shield your earbuds against water up to 3.3 feet (1m). Aside from offering reliable protection from water, many of them can also withstand even nasty impact and keep scuffs at a fair distance. Furthermore, they also don’t play spoilsport with Qi-enabled wireless chargers so that you don’t have to take the pain of taking the cover off before charging. Having said that, let’s dive into the lineup without any more ado!

1. Catalyst

Leading the charge right on front is none other than Catalyst – a well-known accessory maker. What I have found really useful in this AirPods Pro waterproof case is the compact yet highly protective form-factor. The cover features an IP67 rating that makes it fully equipped to fight out dust and also resist water up to 3.3 feet (1m). Beyond water-resistance, it also offers MIL-STD 810 protection to safeguard your AirPods against drops up to 4 feet (1.2m).

Additionally, the case comes in two variants: Standard edition and Premium edition sporting a geometric pattern. While the former comes at $30, the latter is available for $35. As for colors, both of them are available in three hue options: stealth black, midnight blue, and flame red.

The company also provides waterproof cases for AirPods 1 and 2. They come with the IP67 rating and sport almost the same design. Unlike their siblings (for AirPods Pro), Catalyst’s cases for the older versions of AirPods come in as many as 10 vibrant colors.

If you find Catalyst’s range of AirPods waterproof cases a bit too expensive for your budget, Willbox offering might just be your thing. The case may have a comparatively low price tag ($13.99) but when it comes to durability and water resistance, it has got the quality to compete with its premium rival. The IP68 waterproof rating makes it more capable to safeguard your wireless earphones against water damage. That’s not all, the case can also give a solid response to unexpected drops thanks to the durable TPU+PC construction.

The Qi-wireless charging support means you don’t need to remove Willbox waterproof case from your AirPods. With the precise cutouts, super handy carabiner and grippy surface make it a great deal- whichever way you look at it.

Why You Should Hire A Digital Marketing Expert

Tip

Ask prospective marketing professionals about their marketing certifications. Popular and reputable skill-based certifications can indicate that they’re staying ahead of constantly evolving marketing trends.

Editor’s note: Need a online marketing service for your business? Fill out the below questionnaire to have our vendor partners contact you with free information.

Tip

Hire a marketing professional with experience in your specific industry. They’ll be able to track industry trends and offer insights into competitors.

Did You Know?

The best brand-building marketing agencies will help you understand your company’s voice, know your audience and create consistent messages.

In-house marketing professional costs

The upfront cost of hiring a marketing professional varies widely by experience. However, according to ZipRecruiter, a digital marketing manager makes an average annual salary of $55,108.

You’ll need to consider other factors for a true cost assessment:

Employee benefits: You’ll also need to calculate the cost of the in-house marketing professional’s employee benefits package, which runs between 25% and 40% of their salary. For example, for a marketing salary of $55,000, you’d spend an additional $13,750 to $22,000, for a total cost between $68,750 and $77,000. If you break this down into an hourly cost, assuming a 40-hour work week with two weeks of paid vacation, it’s between $34.38 and $38.50 per hour.

The marketing skill level you need: You’ll also need to consider your marketing professional’s skill level. If your business is in a highly competitive industry, you may need someone more sophisticated and experienced, which will cost you more. However, if you use channel selling or a direct salesforce, or your industry is less competitive, you may do well with someone less experienced who doesn’t cost as much. If they’re on salary, they could also contribute to other aspects of your business.

Hiring a marketing agency or professional may seem like a significant expenditure. However, the long-term benefits of marketing expertise – including better marketing ROI – can ultimately save you money.

Tip

In your interview questions, ask prospective marketing professionals about challenges they met and overcame on previous projects. Listen not just to what they say but how they say it; a good marketer is a compelling storyteller.

Downsides of not hiring a marketing professional

If you decide to put off hiring a marketing professional, it can hurt your business in the following ways:

You may not do enough marketing. All businesses must market to survive and grow. Even if you have an established customer base, there is always attrition. Customers can become dissatisfied for whatever reason. Perhaps they can no longer afford your product, their needs change or they move away. To replace lost customers, your business must constantly reach out to new prospects and entice them to buy. Without a dedicated marketing professional or agency actively planning, implementing and analyzing, potential new customers can slip through the cracks. You may not be out in front of potential customers, but your competition likely is.

You’ll waste money on ineffective marketing efforts. It’s easy to waste a lot of money on marketing if you don’t know what you’re doing. Marketing is as much science as art, and experienced marketing professionals know the tips and tricks that give their companies a higher ROI. Additionally, they’re focused on marketing KPIs and adept at analyzing data to determine precisely what’s working and what isn’t and then adjusting accordingly. While no marketer has a crystal ball that lets them avoid wasted marketing spend entirely, professionals can detect problems and regroup quickly.

You may miss out on opportunities. Even if you have a marketing background, new marketing methods and channels always pop up. If you aren’t dedicating a sizable chunk of your time to keeping up with trends and strategies, you’re likely missing out on a platform or tactic that could bring you business. Part of a marketing professional’s job is staying abreast of the latest marketing buzz so that your business is always where it needs to be when it should be there.

You may neglect other crucial business functions. You have many responsibilities as a business owner. If you’re spending an excessive amount of time on marketing, you’re likely neglecting other parts of your business, including managing employees, improving processes, overseeing finances, creating an overall business strategy and forming strategic alliances. Your company can’t afford for you to devote too much time to one business element.

Improve your bottom line with a marketing expert

If you’re still on the fence about hiring someone to do your marketing, consider this: No one will buy your product or service if they don’t know it exists. Marketing experts know how to get a company noticed and can consistently implement new strategies. It may take a few months to start seeing the results of these strategies, but in the end, it’s an investment that will pay off and allow you to start scaling.
