Suggested January 2024 5 Android Apps You Shouldn’T Miss This Week
We took a closer look at Microsoft Launcher 6.0 this week. It’s technically not that new, but the update did bring some changes. For instance, the UI is a little more cohesive than it used to be and the launcher setup is a little more traditional. Additionally, it gives you a second row of apps on the dock instead of the old toggles. In any case, hit the link to see our full impressions.
Google may allow call recording on the stock dialer app soon. The company re-introduced the capacity to call record in Android 10 so this isn’t too far of a stretch. An APK tear down revealed the appropriate code for the feature. Of course, this doesn’t mean the feature is 100% on its way. However, it would be something wildly out of Google’s wheelhouse and it could be fun to see.
Google re-branded its Fast Share feature this week. The feature is now Nearby Sharing, a less catchy and fun name. The feature should compete with Apple’s AirDrop feature and let Android users trade files with one another quickly and easily. The name change was spotted in the latest Google Play Services update from the last week.
Firefox had a bit of a rough week. The developers discovered a zero-day exploit and it was used in some targeted attacks. We highly recommend updating your Firefox right now both on desktop and mobile. The issue is caused by an incorrect alias information in IonMonkey JIT compiler, according to a Chinese research firm. In any case, if you have the latest update, you should be in the clear.
Google had to give up search engine control in the EU after a massive antitrust court case. This week, we saw the options for EU Android users. They include DuckDuckGo, chúng tôi Google Search, Yandex, PrivacyWall, and a few others. Not all search engines are available in all countries, but most of them are available in most. Color by Number Oil Painting Warface: Global OeprationsPrice: Free to play
Warface is a mobile version of the popular free to play console and PC shooter. This version is also free to play and not quite as good as the console and PC counterparts. However, it does have its perks. Most of its in-app purchases are for character customizations so the app avoids the pay-to-win aspect. From there, the game has its ups and downs. The graphics are fantastic but the controls are a tad clunky. We’re not fans of the battle pass subscription, but the game has a decent array of weapons and gear. Fans of the mobile FPS genre may like it, but it’s not quite as good as Call of Duty: Mobile.
GitHubPrice: Free
GitHub is a development platform predominately for open source applications. The company had an Android app already. However, this one is brand new and in beta. It works as you would expect. You can browse the site, contribute in your own ways, and otherwise engage with your projects. It has the basics like a clean UI and a dark mode. It’s in beta so it’s still an unfinished product. However, we quite liked it. The app is entirely free to download and use.
TERA ClassicPrice: Free to play
TERA Classic is a mobile release of the popular MMORPG. The game includes four classes, mounts, tons of quests, decent graphics, easy enough controls, and more. It plays a lot like most mobile MMORPGs but it does let you do 50 player guild fights and we thought that was kind of cool. This one is also fairly new and the Play Store listing isn’t even in English yet. However, if you can get beyond the language barrier, this one is pretty good. We expect full translations for everything sooner rather than later.
Microsoft EdgePrice: Free
Technically, Microsoft Edge isn’t new. However, Microsoft launched the Chromium version of it across all platforms and so the app is back in beta. This version should sync and work with the desktop version as long as you download the Chromium variant from Microsoft. The mobile browser version looks and feels like Chrome but with a Microsoft spin and that describes the desktop variant as well. I had problems signing into my Microsoft account so I couldn’t test the syncing. However, it is in beta so it’s to be expected.

5 Android Apps You Shouldn’T Miss This Week!
The beta version of the official Xbox app now streams games on your phone from your Xbox. It works just like it did with the Xbox Insiders program except now it doesn’t need the Insiders program to work. This is a pretty big step toward game streaming with Xbox. Microsoft also made waves by purchasing ZeniMax (parent company of Bethesda) for $7.5 billion earlier this week. Hit the two links to learn more.
Amazon announced Luna this week. It’s a new game streaming service similar to Google Stadia. People buy a controller, connect it to a Fire TV device, and stream games. The new service features 50 games at launch, 1080p and 60fps game play (with the premium version), and 4k streaming to come later. Luna also integrates with Twitch. This is a pretty good competitor in this space and should give Stadia a run for its money.
Sling TV launched a new social distancing feature this week. The app now has Watch Party, a video chat service that lets you chat with people while watching the same show on TV. Unfortunately, the feature isn’t available on every platform where you can get Sling TV, but it is available in the app version at least. The new feature brings it in contention with other streaming services with shared watching experiences.
The US temporarily halted its ban on WeChat and TikTok. TikTok found itself a buyer with Oracle and Walmart that should keep it from being in the hot seat for the foreseeable future. Meanwhile, a judge blocked the US from banning WeChat from app stores for the time being. The TikTok development is huge since it was going to sell to Microsoft and then didn’t. Trump said he approved of the Oracle deal so this whole saga might finally be over.
Epic Games and Spotify are uniting to push for major app store reforms. Both companies strongly dislike the 30% cut that Apple and Google take in the App Store and Google Play, respectively, and want a bigger cut for themselves (and ostensibly, other developers). Match (developers of most dating apps you know about) and Tile also joined in this new coalition, dubbed the Coalition for App Fairness. Hit the link to learn more about their demands.
Battle Tank2Price: Free to play
Battle Tank2 is an arcade PvP game with a bunch of tanks. Players play real-time three versus three battles against other players with only your tank to keep you safe. There are additional tanks and various upgrades to unlock as you progress. You basically battle the opposing team until someone wipes out the other side’s main base. It’s not an overly complicated or deep game and it’s pretty easy to get into. The game doesn’t have too much of a tutorial and battles are relatively quick. However, the game is a bit buggy and unpolished. We recommend waiting a bit to see if the developers fix it later on, but it has a good foundation.
KippoPrice: Free / $9.99 per month / $54.99 per year
Kippo is a dating app specifically for gamers. The app asks you things like the games you like and other such things. It then pairs you up with people who play the same games and like the same stuff. It’s not a difficult premise, but it’s a neat idea nevertheless. The app is free to use for the basic stuff like profile creation and basic matching. However, there is a premium subscription option with more features. It’s kind of like a gamer version of Tinder but it goes a bit deeper than just physical attraction. In any case, it’s a decent option in the dating space for gamers.
Joe Hindy / Android Authority
BTS Universe StoryPrice: Free to play
BTS Universe Story is a visual novel style simulation game. Players pick one of seven characters (all boys) and make various decisions to impact the outcome of their lives. You can also create your own stories and, to be honest, that’s the real draw of this app. The story creator is rather decent and lets you do your own thing instead of what the game tells you. Some of the stories require purchase first, but this is a decent, chill game for life sim fans.
Cubasis 3Price: Free trial / $54.99
Cubasis 3 (by the makers of Cubase) is an audio DAW that actually launched a couple of months ago. It was super buggy to start, though, and we wanted to give the developers time before we wrote about it. Cubase is one of the most popular DAWs on PC so it’s kind of a big deal that there is an Android version. The trial version (linked at the button) gives you 30 minutes of demo time to see if you like it and you can restart the demo and do it again as many times as you like. In terms of features, this one is full featured and includes unlimited MIDI tracks, an absolutely ton of features, and a sky high price tag. We absolutely recommend checking out the demo first.
Harry Potter: Puzzles & SpellsPrice: Free to play
Harry Potter: Puzzles & Spells is a new arcade match-three game from Zynga. It plays like most match-three games. You match various shapes together to clear them from the board until you win the level. There are the same old special abilities like you see in most games in this genre, but all the ones here are Harry Potter themed. The abilities are upgradeable as you play and collectibles that can help you in the game as well. The game also lets you relive old Harry Potter moments as well. It’s not overly imaginative, but it’s a rock solid match-three game if you’re into that sort of thing.
5 Android Apps You Must Have For Your Outdoor Camping Trip
Vacationing is a great way to spend some downtime and recharge yourself. In my opinion, one of the cheapest and most fun ways to vacation is camping. Even though you may want to detach as much from your everyday world as you can, you will still bring your phone.
The number of apps geared toward the camping and outdoorsy crowd. Below is a varied list of different Android apps to help you plan, track activities and survive if something disastrous happens.
1. Camping Trip PlannerWe don’t usually recommend paid Android apps here, but Camping Trip Planner is an exception. One of the hardest parts of any trip is planning it. Well worth the 99 cents. When you are just starting out or haven’t been camping in a while, you are bound to forget something important. Using the Camping Trip Planner, it gives you lists of things to consider and a check box to mark them complete. Lists like “Before leaving” have great tips such as turn off the water to your home and give handheld radio codes to friends or family in case you are lost.
2. Tiny Flashlight + LEDThis a simple to use flashlight app with a few different options. Aside from the flashlight, there is a morse code signal. Type in what you want to say and the app converts it.
3. Sky MapThe stars seem so much brighter when you are out of the city. Using Sky Map, you will be able to tell what constellations you are seeing. Information about the night sky from years past is searchable in Time Travel mode. On the nights a planet is visible, you can enter in the planet or group of stars you’d like to see and Sky Map will point you in the right direction.
4. AllTrails – Hiking & BikingExploring nature is the whole reason for camping. Knowing where some great hiking trails are can really make or break a trip. All Trails offers locations and guides for trails near you. When you know a little more about the history and other possible activities, you can plan more of your day and make sure you don’t miss out on any of the possible fun.
5. Where’s My DroidOutdoor activities can cause you to be a little more careless with your phone. You could drop it on a trail or a furry woodland creature could sneak up behind you and carry it off. Regardless of how you lose your Android, you need a way to find it. Where’s My Droid is one of the best options to help you find your phone. Sending your phone a text message can activate the ringer or send back a GPS location.
Final thoughtsGetting out and breathing in some of that fresh air is good for you as long as you come prepared. Other than your phone, you can leave your life behind for a few days and just enjoy being disconnected from your everyday world.

5 Best Android Apps For Replacing Your Broken Home Button
Plenty of Android devices ship without physical home buttons, but Samsung’s devices (among others) still do, and as the best-selling Android manufacturer, that means millions of these buttons are still getting into the hands of users.
Whether physical or virtual buttons are better is a debate I’m not going to dive into, but what do you do if your home button happens to break somewhere down the line?
In the long run, probably replace your phone, but in the meantime, here are several Android apps that you can use to replace a broken home button.
1. Navigation BarIf your home button has let you down, and you’ve always been intrigued by those minimal icons that most Android phones use for navigation, then Navigation Bar is for you.
This app gives you the Material Design Back, Home and Recents buttons across the bottom of your screen, just like the official ones. What makes these better is that you can tweak them all you like, decide how long they stay on the screen before the disappear (or lock them if you like), change the icons’ size and even the background color behind the icons.
2. Home ButtonFrom the same developer as Navigation Bar, Home Button gives the bottom of your screen a glowing colored hue, which you can then tap or long-tap to act as a home button. It has plenty of customization options, too, such as changing the size and color of the tasteful glowing light at the bottom of your screen.
You can actually decide what tapping and long-tapping this light does, so you can program all kinds of functions to it such as Back, Home, Recents, WiFi toggle and so on. That means that even if you do have a functioning physical home button, this app could still be worth looking into.
3. Multi-Action Home ButtonMulti-Action Home Button is designed specifically for phones that don’t have virtual home buttons. It was originally created for the HTC One, but it works with Samsung phones just as well. All users have to do is tap the bottom-center of the screen to activate the home button or perform other actions. Unfortunately, the app inserts an item in the notification drawer that does nothing other than serve as a reminder that it’s running, so users still have to put up with a little extra visual clutter.
4. Easy TouchLike Home Button, Easy Touch (no longer available) adds an icon that floats on top of your other apps. Unlike that app, it comes with far more functionality. Whenever you tap the floating icon, you not only have the option to return to the home screen, you can lock the phone, toggle the settings, or access favorite apps.
5. Button SaviorButton Savior offers possibly the most comprehensive solution to the whole ordeal, but it does come with a major caveat – some of the functionality requires root. Fortunately, returning to the homescreen is not one of those features, and it works out of the box just fine.
Button Savior works by sticking a little dock on the side of the screen that disappears behind a small transparent toggle when not in use. Tapping that arrow pulls the dock back out, displaying icons for performing various tasks. The app is very customizable, so you can change the icons on the dock, which side of the screen everything resides on, and the order everything appears in.
ConclusionThese apps can help you continue to use a phone with a broken physical home button. Even if your device is in complete working order, this can help you give that button a rest or make up for the lack of a virtual button that you may wish you had. Alternatively, these apps can prevent you from having to reach all the way to the bottom of a large phone just to return home.

5 Interactive Iphone Apps To Help You Learn Chinese Faster
Learning a new language can be fun and interactive at the same time now that we have tons of platforms to use. You can learn Spanish, Portuguese or Chinese at home, at the beach or while in transit, anytime and anywhere.
Of course, depending on the language difficulty ranking – for example, Arabic, Japanese, Korean and Mandarin/Cantonese Chinese are categorised as “exceptionally difficult” for native English speakers – the students are required to spend more weeks or months (even years) mastering it.
Mandarin is one of the most difficult languages to learn, and if you wish to challenge yourself – to know the basics both in oral and written form – you can use these mobile apps to help you learn the language faster, whether you’re learning it all by yourself or already enrolled in a language program.
1. BrainscapeThe freemium app uses flash cards to teach you some of the basic Chinese words, grammar and phrases you need to know “to survive the streets of Beijing or Shanghai.” Brainscape offers other e-learning subjects aside from Chinese language. With the free “Survival Chinese” package, you’ll get four decks with 195 flashcards to drill you at your own pace by rating each flash card from 1 to 5 on how well you know the word(s).
2. Whizz – Learning for ChineseWhizz teaches you how to read and write Chinese in a systematic way, showing you symbols and characters to remember them right away. The learning method is called “space repetition,” and unlike Brainscape, the app sets a time limit to figure out the word or symbol.
The app shows you nine characters in flashcards, and then you type the English translation in the keyboard. Type faster for a perfect score. So, from reading to learning the system until you unlock the export mode, Whizz will make your Chinese lessons fun, engaging and challenging while on mobile. (Free via App Store)
3. Penyo Pal’s Learn Mandarin Chinese VocabularyHere’s another flashcard game to drill your memory with images, pronunciation, and symbols, which is ideal for kids and adults. The animation sets the mood to motivate you. Aside from learning Mandarin, it provides the pinyin, audio and visual presentation to help you memorize the words effectively.
Memorizing the characters can be frustrating because they almost look the same. The app makes it easier for learners to adapt to its method one step at a time. You will definitely love the animations that give you hints whether you’re correct or not. (Okay, now I know “mangguo” and “pingguo” by heart.) (Free via App Store)
4. Chinese WriterThe freemium app teaches you the strokes of each character using a gameplay concept until you master each one and improve the time. The characters fall randomly from the top; you must be quick to draw each one to improve your score. Speed and focus are important in this gameplay, while if five characters reach the bottom, you’re out – a big kaboom flashes in front of your screen.
Wait, there’s more. Chinese Writer allows you to review the characters you already know and the characters you’ve failed to draw many times; the next time you play, it automatically pops them down until you master them. It also shows the pinyin, meaning of the character in English and pronunciation, while allowing you to practice the strokes. The app comes with in-app purchases to unlock other packages and characters, ranging from $0.99 to $9.99. (Free via App Store)
5. Learn Chinese (Mandarin) by MindSnacksLast but not the least, another animated and educational mobile app from MindSnacks makes your Chinese learning sprint fun using a game. You get a free lesson, and the rest are available as in-app purchases. The “Swell” game teaches you the Chinese numbers from 0 to 20, so you better be fast when you play the game. It shows the character and pinyin, then you have to choose between which of the two is the correct one.
Similar to Whizz and Chinese Writer, you only have a few seconds to figure things out; match the word before the water runs out or your fish dies. The game provides you the right answer as reference. Meanwhile, the “Galactic” game teaches you the tones. It’s using a rote method, so if you’re comfortable with the gameplay, you may purchase the other packs separately, ranging from $4.99 to $17.99. (Free via App Store)
ConclusionTwo of my favorites are the Chinese Writer and Brainscape. While these mobile apps can speed up our Chinese learning sprint, nothing beats real-life experience where we can converse with a native speaker who knows the nooks and crannies of the Chinese grammar, phrases and contexts.
