3 Ways To Create Borders In Google Docs

Many things you can do in Microsoft Word you can also do in Google Docs. You can insert tables, embed images, and even create drawings. However, one thing that you can’t do natively is create borders in Google Docs. Specifically, there’s no option to create an outline around a page.

However, there are a few simple workarounds to draw a border around a page in Google Docs. You just have to jump through a few hoops to do it. In this article, you’ll learn all of the options that are available to get this done.

How to Add Page Borders in Google Docs

There are a few ways to create a border around your pages in Google Docs. All of these are methods to create a border around a single page. So if you want to have a border for all pages, you’ll need to repeat the option you choose for all of them.

1. Create a Single Cell Table

The easiest way to create a border around a Google Docs page is to use a single cell table with a border. Since you can fill in text inside a cell just like you can in a page, this will appear like a page with a border.

Select the Insert menu, select Table, and then select the 1×1 table.

This will drop a table into your document. Since it’s just a one-cell table, it shows up as a box in your document. 

Select any side of the table and readjust the height and width of the table so that it encircles the entire page.

When you’re finished, your table will form the page border. You can type anywhere inside this box and type just like if you’d type into the page itself.

You can format the text color, alignment and everything else in exactly the same ways. This means you’ll lose nothing from using a single-cell table to create your page border in Google Docs.

If you don’t like the appearance of the table border, or it appeared without one, just select the table border itself to change its appearance. You’ll see the formatting menu appear in the ribbon. Use the format (pen) icon to change the border color. 

To the right of this, you’ll see icons to change the border thickness and the border style (like a dotted line instead of solid).

2. Inserting a Drawing – Box or Text Box

If you don’t like the table option, there’s another way you can create a page border in Google Docs. You can insert a drawing and then create either a regular box or a text box to form your border.

1. Select the Insert menu, select Drawing, and then select New.

2. In the menu, select the shapes icon, select Shapes, and then select the rectangle icon to insert a rectangle shape into your document.

3. This will insert a rectangle into the drawing tool. You can resize it here if you wish (by dragging the borders), or just select Save and Close since you’ll have an opportunity to resize it inside your document anyway.

4. You’ll now see the rectangle appear inside your Google Docs document. Again, you can resize this shape the same exact way you did for the table. Just select the rectangle and then drag any side to resize it to the edge of your document.

5. The background border of the document will be blue. So, if you prefer white or some other color, just select the rectangle and select the Edit button at the bottom.

6. This will open the drawing tool again where you’ll find the editing toolbar. Here you can change the fill color, border color, border line thickness, and border style. 

Just select Save and Close again for those changes to show up on the rectangle that’s in your document.

Note: You could also insert an image box instead of a regular shape into the document. However, both essentially work the same way since you can start typing text into either. A text box appears without a border by default, so you’ll need to edit the textbox to add the border if you want one.

3. Inserting an Image as Page Border

The final approach you have available to create a page border in Google Docs is to insert a border image from the web. This gives you the ability to use somewhat more creative borders and is especially useful if you’re making invitations or some other document that could use a nice border image.

1. Select the Insert menu, select Image, and then select Search the web.

2. You can search the web for borders from inside Google Docs by typing “borders” or something similar into this search field. 

4. This will insert the image border into the document. Resize this image border by selecting and dragging any side of the border to the edge of your document.

5. Since this is an image, you won’t be able to just select anywhere inside it and start typing text. To insert text over it, you’ll need to move this border image behind all text. To do this, select the image and select the Behind text icon at the bottom of the image.

6. This will place the image as a layer behind all of the text in the document. Now you can start typing inside the image border.

You may need to use the tab key on your keyboard a few times to place the beginning of each text line inside the border itself. However, this is a small price to pay so you can use creative image borders around your document.

3 Ways to Create Borders in Google Docs

Any of the three ways to create borders described above will work fine, but the one you choose really depends on the outcome you’re looking for. If you want a quick and easy solution, either the table or the drawing will work fine. Both allow you to format the text just as easily as without a border.

However, if you’re looking for something more creative, the image border is best since you can use an image on the web or one of your own.

Android and iOS notifications can get out of hand fast. For example, it seems like the notification light on my Android tablet is constantly pulsing, and no—I really don’t need to know that there’s a new episode of “Big Bang Club” available on the CBS app for iPhone.

Luckily, there’s an alternative to completely silencing your phone using, say, iOS’s Do Not Disturb mode, or Priority mode on the latest Android handsets. Both Android and iOS offer plenty of other options for deciding which alerts and notifications will pop on your display—and perhaps more importantly, which won’t.

Read on for five ways to take charge of your Android and iOS notifications, starting with…

1. Turn off the notification light (Android)

Is the notification light on your Android phone always blinking? There’s an easy way to turn it off—for good.

The little notification light above my Nexus 7’s screen always seems to be flashing—to the point where it’s practically meaningless.

2. Move notifications for specific apps out of Notification Center (iOS)

With a little bit of work, you can make the alerts that show up in iOS’s Notification Center a lot more meaningful.

The pull-down Notification Center for iOS has (for me, anyway) started to get as useless as Android’s flashing notification light. It can easily get jammed with too many alerts, all thanks to a few too-pushy apps.

Luckily, there’s a way to decide which apps can add alerts to Notification Center. You can also set which app’s alerts go first, and how many alerts each app gets to display.

For any app, you can tap it, then tap Show in Notification Center, and pick an option—anything from No Recent Items, which nixes an app’s alerts from Notification Center altogether, or 1, 5, or 10 recent items.

To change the order in which app alerts are displayed, go back to the main Notifications settings screen, tap Sort by Time, then tap the Edit button in the top corner of the display.

See those little handles next to the name of each “Included” app? Tap, hold and drag to rearrange them. Feel free to drag an “Included” app into the “Do Not Include” section.

3. Priority mode: Choosing alerts (Android Lollipop)

You can decide precisely who can reach you when your Android device is set to “Priority” mode—and who can’t.

The latest “Lollipop”-updated Android devices boast the new Priority mode—that is, a mode that silences your phone or tablet save for important alerts of your choosing. Just tap the Volume button to toggle Priority mode on and off.

By default, calls from your contacts can get through, as well as calendar reminders and alarms. To customize what makes the cut, try this: 

To prevent calendar events from interrupting your Priority time, flip off the switch next to Events and reminders.

You can shush calls and messages completely by flipping off the Messages switch— although doing so would basically turn Priority mode into “Complete Silence” mode. Instead of flipping the Messages switch, tap Calls/messages from and pick an option: Anyone, Contacts only, or (if you only want an elite group of callers) Starred Contacts only.

By default, app notifications are blocked in Priority mode, but you can let a few select ones get past the velvet rope. Go back to the Sound & notifications screen, tap App notifications, select an app, then flip on the Priority switch.

4. Block all of an app’s notifications (Android and iOS)

You can control the notifications from any Android app using the Block setting in Lollipop, and the Show notifications setting in prior OS versions. 

Got an app that’s particularly pushy when it comes to alerts? If so, it might be time to muzzle it for good.

5. Get VIP alerts via email (iOS)

Tap the little ‘i’ to manage your VIP list in the iOS Mail app.

Long ago, I decided against having my iPhone’s display light up every time a new email arrived—which, as it turns out, is once every few minutes or so.

But what about email messages that really are important—like those from your boss, or your better half? To make your iPhone buzz, beep, or otherwise make a fuss, do this.

Launch the Mail app, back up to the main Mailboxes screen (the one that lists all your mailboxes and mail accounts), then look for the VIP mailbox. Tap the little ‘i’ there, just to the right.

Here, you can see a list of all your email VIPs. Tap Add VIP to pick new people from your Contacts list, or tap Edit to manage your existing VIP list.

Now tap VIP Alerts to jump to your VIP notification settings, where you can decide what’ll happen when an email arrives from someone on the list. You can set a special VIP sound, for example, or allow VIP alerts to appear on your iOS lock screen. Keep in mind that any VIP alerts settings you pick won’t affect your regular Mail alert settings.

Bear in mind that this is just a workaround, and if you choose to sign out of your Google account, you’ll be signed out of other Google services.

Google Ads is a powerful platform for driving awareness, traffic, and conversions.

A finely tuned and optimized account can provide a tremendous return on investment and deliver against digital marketing goals.

Odds are that you have a dedicated resource on your team, an outsourced resource, or maybe you’re that person or team that’s charged with properly managing the Google Ads account.

Regardless of structure and responsibility, it is important to remember that no matter how well our Google Ads account is performing and returning (or not) on investment, Google will gladly accept our payments.

There are eight important things that you need to make sure you’re not overlooking or doing wrong.

I have outlined those items and ways to make them right if you find that you’re losing money or oversight in any of these areas.

This topic resonates with me as I have previously shared ways that you’re wasting money on your investments in content marketing and SEO.

1. Assuming the Previous Manager Had Things Optimized

If you’re taking over an account or did at some point and didn’t blow it up and start from scratch, you might have some hidden baggage.

There are plenty of valid differences of opinion and ways to strategically operate a Google Ads account and do paid search.

However, even the best occasionally forget a setting or miss something when Google updates the system.

I strongly recommend auditing the account and not taking things for granted.

Even if you’re taking over from your best friend or most trusted colleague, you need to spend some time understanding all of the settings, account structure, negative matching, and to get a handle on the what and why of how they are configured before you get too deep in your own process and strategy.

2. Not Customizing Settings for Your Needs

Google Ads accounts start out with a lot of defaults and one-size-fits-all formatting. There’s danger in ignoring settings and not routinely reviewing them.

A quick example of one of these settings comes into play if you’re targeting a specific country, region, or radius.

Another example of settings to beware of are the “auto-applied” ad settings.

If you receive the automated Google created ad adjustment recommendations and don’t review, edit, or turn them off within 14 days, they’ll automatically be applied to your account.

You should always want to have full control of your account so owning the settings and keeping automated things out (if you don’t want them or agree with them) is critical.

3. Not Conducting Regular Audits

It isn’t enough to perform just an initial audit when you take over an account.

You need to perform regular audits at least annually.

Even the best need their accounts and work checked.

Just like a writer, it is hard to work on something for a long period of time and see a typo looked over many times.

The more you’re looking at an account, the more you need someone else to take a periodic look.

4. Skipping Competitor Research & Monitoring

Audience research to uncover the right targeting for keywords, placements, remarketing, and matched lists are a big part of setting up an account and strategically optimizing it over time.

This is a natural approach.

Beyond the audience though, we need to put a focus on our competitors.


What they’re spending.

What keywords they’re targeting.

How to make adjustments.

Go in a different direction or prepare for what it will take to target the same audience.

5. Overusing Broad Match & Lacking Match Type Strategies

Find a match type strategy that works for you.

Know where you’re prospecting and learning versus where you’re targeting the bottom of the funnel, ready to convert prospects.

6. A Disproportionate Focus on Quality Score

Quality score matters, but it isn’t the only thing to focus on.

If you’re obsessed with it, consider how it might be blinding you from other factors.

If you’re feeling guilty of not looking at it enough now that I’m mentioning it, well, it is time to take a look and make sure you’re doing well enough to not waste spend compared to competitors with low scores.

7. Being Too Hands-Off

I’ve learned some lessons over the years about what happens when not enough oversight is given to a campaign.

I audited a large bank and found that their auto-pilot efforts had wasted more than $13,000.

In another, more personal case, I was managing a campaign for a local mortgage company with branches around a specific metropolitan area.

All of the best practices and strategic optimizations were in place and we were getting close to their cost per lead goals a few months into the campaign.

What happened next, I couldn’t have predicted.

I had all of my competitor monitoring set up and running.

However, I found that overnight I was losing traffic and that my costs had gone up significantly.

Thankfully, I caught this in a 24-hour period, and over the next few days was able to tell exactly what had happened.

One national lender was present in the market and was willing to bid crazy amounts to win the auction.

A second national lender entered the market also willing to bid really high.

Those accounts were on auto-pilot and were running an automated bidding war against each other paying more than twice what the norms had been per keyword.

That second competitor entering started the cycle.

To this day, their compliance and legal teams would cringe to know they were showing up for things like “payday loans” with how loose and quick they were trying to spend money.

Had I just stuck with my normal competitor monitoring and reports (as noted and encouraged above), it would have taken me weeks or more to understand why my numbers were off and it would have been harder to correct from.

8. Operating in a Silo

At some point, and maybe on an ongoing basis, your company has invested in branding and content.

Paid search can operate in much more of a silo than other digital marketing channels.

Please resist the temptation to stay too deep in it.

Branded content, messaging, and specific calls to action that align with the brand overall can help you.

While you might be focused on generic keywords, you can often benefit from being consistent in voice and wording of ad copy, ad creative, and landing page messaging for those that have had other touchpoints and exposure to your brand.

Tap into:

User testing.


Value propositions.

Calls to action.

Other brand assets.

Leverage these so you don’t have a disconnected experience for your paid search traffic and audience.

This requires collaboration with sales, product managers, and more.


We all want to have the most strategic and optimized Google Ads accounts possible.

Whether we build the accounts from scratch, inherit them, or put all of our time and attention into them, there’s always a risk of not being aware of the things that can waste money.
